[목회서신] 잘 배우는 사람의 지혜 (2018.09.16)

우리 안에는 성장 본능이 있습니다. 어린 아이들을 관찰해 보십시오. 아이들은 성장할 때 가장 큰 희열을 느낍니다. 어린 아이가 태어나서 첫 걸음을 내어 디딜 때, 놀라운 기쁨을 경험하게 됩니다. 글을 배우고 글을 읽기 시작할 때 말할 수 없는 즐거움을 경험하게 됩니다. 성장은 기쁨을 낳습니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 힘이 들어도 성장을 위해 배움을 선택합니다. 성장은 저절로 되지 않습니다. 성장은 의도적인 선택을 통해 이루어집니다. 특별히 성장은 배움을 통해 이루어집니다. 배움은 선택, 결단, 그리고 헌신을 요구합니다. 때로는 배운다는 것이 힘이 듭니다. 하지만 배움의 보상이 크기 때문에 우리는 거듭 배움에 도전합니다. 배움이란 고통을 먼저 선택하고 기쁨을 나중에 누리는 것과 같습니다. 중요한 것은 배우되 잘 배우는 것입니다.

첫째, 책을 읽으면서 배우십시오. 책 속에 길이 있습니다. 책 속에 지식과 지혜의 보화가 담겨 있습니다. 책을 가지고 있는 것보다 더 중요한 것은 책을 읽는 것입니다. 다른 사람이 읽지 않은 책을 우리가 읽었다면 다른 사람과 책 한권의 차이를 만들어 내는 것입니다. 책을 읽을 때 중요한 것은 목표를 가지고 책을 읽는 것입니다. 문제는 자신이 어떤 목표를 세울 줄 잘 모른다는 것입니다. 제가 그런 경험을 했습니다. 그럴수록 책을 읽으십시오. 책을 읽다보면 자신이 몰랐던 것을 알게 되고, 몰랐던 것을 더 알고 싶은 목표가 생깁니다. 또한 이미 알고 있었던 것을 더욱 깊이 알고 싶은 열망이 생깁니다.

책을 읽을 때 중요한 것은 의문과 호기심입니다. 제가 책을 읽게 된 가장 강력한 동기는 의문과 호기심 때문입니다. 특별히 1989년에 영적 침체와 함께 우울증, 공황장애, 의욕상실, 식욕상실, 절망감, 무력감, 그리고 수면장애를 경험했습니다. 참 고통스런 날들이었습니다. 고통스런 날들을 보내면서, 왜 제게 이런 침체가 왔는지, 왜 내게 이런 염려와 불안과 두려움과 무력증이 찾아 왔는지 궁금했습니다. 저는 궁금증을 해소하기 위해 책을 읽고 또 읽었습니다. 그러는 중에 저는 인간의 영혼과 마음과 몸이 함께 연결되어 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 마음의 생각과 감정과 육체가 연결되어 있는 것을 경험했습니다. 그런 과정을 통해 저의 침체의 근본 원인을 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 대부분의 문제가 생각에서 온다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 마음에서 온다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 치유는 깨달음에 있습니다. 깨달음을 통해 저는 치유를 경험했습니다.

제가 품었던 또 하나의 질문은 교회를 개척했는데 사람들이 모이지 않는 것이었습니다. 사람들이 제가 전하는 설교를 잘 듣지 않는 것이었습니다. 저는 교회를 개척할 당시까지, 목표를 설정하고 달성하는 법을 배워 본 적이 없었습니다. 사람들의 마음을 움직이는 법을 배워 본 적이 없었습니다. 마음공부와 감정 공부를 해 본 적이 없었습니다. 소통하는 법을 배워 본 적이 없었습니다. 과업을 성취하고, 공동체를 세우고 성장시키는 것을 배워 본 적이 없었습니다. 지도자가 되는 법을 배워 본 적이 없었습니다. 놀라운 것은 저의 질문과 고민에 대한 해답이 모두 책 속에 담겨 있었다는 것입니다. 특별히 책 중의 책인 성경 속에 담겨 있었다는 것입니다.

둘째, 만남을 통해 배우십시오. 만남처럼 소중한 것은 없습니다. 가장 소중한 만남은 하나님과의 만남입니다. 하나님과의 만남이 중요한 까닭은 하나님과의 만남을 통해 또 다른 소중한 만남이 열리기 때문입니다. 특별히 훌륭한 스승과 탁월한 멘토와의 만남은 복 중의 복입니다. 좋은 만남보다 더 중요한 것은 좋은 만남을 통해 잘 배우는 것입니다. 가룟 유다는 최고의 스승을 만났지만 슬프게도 잘 배우지 못했습니다.

좋은 만남을 통해 잘 배우는 길은 질문과 경청과 메모입니다. 탁월한 분을 만나면 말을 적게 하십시오. 질문을 준비해 가서 마음에 품은 것들을 솔직하게 질문하십시오. 어떻게 탁월한 인물이 되었는지 여쭈어 보십시오. 누구에게 영향을 받았으며, 어떤 책들의 영향을 받았는지 여쭈어 보십시오. 어떻게 성공했으며, 어떻게 장애물을 극복했는지 여쭈어 보십시오. 어떻게 난관을 돌파했는지 여쭈어 보십시오. 어떻게 실패를 딛고 다시 일어설 수 있었는지 여쭈어 보십시오. 어떻게 문제를 잘 해결하는 지를 여쭈어 보십시오. 어떻게 탁월한 선택을 하는 지를 여쭈어 보십시오.

질문과 함께 중요한 것은 경청하는 것입니다. 경청은 지혜를 얻는 길입니다. 경청하면서 조금 더 깊은 질문을 하십시오. 경청하는 중에 배운 지혜와 지식과 원리들을 메모하십시오. 메모한다는 것은 배운 것을 중요하게 여긴다는 것을 보여주는 것입니다. 메모한다는 것은 스승을 존경한다는 것을 보여주는 것입니다. 또한 메모한다는 것은 배운 것을 나중에 활용하겠다는 것을 의미합니다. 한 걸음 더 나아가 배운 것을 또 다른 사람에게 전수하겠다는 것을 의미합니다. 다음 목회서신에는 다른 사람을 가르치면서 더욱 잘 배우는 지혜를 나누도록 하겠습니다. 축복합니다.

The Wisdom of a Person Who Learns Well

We all have an instinct in us to grow. Observe young children. Children feel the greatest joy when they grow up. When a child is born and takes his first steps, he experiences incredible joy. When you start to read and write, you will experience an unspeakable pleasure. Growth produces joy. That is why we choose to learn for growth even if it is difficult. Growth is not produced spontaneously. Growth is produced through deliberate choices. Growth is especially achieved through learning. Learning requires choice, determination, and commitment. Sometimes it is hard to learn. However, because we are rewarded greatly with learning, we repeatedly challenge ourselves to learn. Learning is like choosing pain first and enjoying joy later. The important thing about learning is to learn well.

First, learn through reading. There are ways in books. There are treasures of knowledge and wisdom in books. More important than having a book is reading a book. If we read a book that someone else has not read, it is like making a difference between the person and us. When reading a book, it is important to read it with a goal. The problem is that we do not know how to set a goal. I've had that experience, as well. The more you have that experience, the more you should read books. When you read a book, you realize what you did not realize before and start to desire to set a goal to learn more. You also may desire to know more deeply of what you already know.

When reading books, it is important to have questions and curiosity. The most powerful motive that I have ever had for reading were questions and curiosity. Especially in 1989, I experienced depression, panic disorder, loss of motivation, loss of appetite, despair, helplessness, and insomnia with spiritual depression. Those were painful times. Spending those painful days, I wondered why this depression came to me and why these worry, anxiety, fear, and asthenia. I read and continued to read books to solve my curiosities. In the meantime, I realized that the human soul, mind and body are all connected. I experienced the connection of the thoughts of my mind, my feelings, and my physical body. Through such process, I began to realize the root cause of my depression. I realized that most of the problems came from thinking. I realized that they come from my heart. Healing is in understanding. Through understanding I experienced healing.

Another question I had was why people were not gathered even though I planted a church. People did not listen to my sermons carefully. I never learned how to set and achieve goals until I planted the church. I have never learned how to move people's minds. I have never studied mind and emotion. I have never learned how to communicate. I have never learned how to accomplish tasks, build and grow a community. I have never learned how to be a leader. The surprising fact is that the answers to my questions and concerns were all contained in books. Especially, in the Bible, the book of books.

Second, learn through encounters. Nothing is as precious as an encounter. The most important encounter is that with God. Your encounter with God is important because through your encounter with God you will have other encounters. Especially an encounter with a good teacher or an excellent mentor is the biggest blessing. More important than a good encounter is to learn well through the good encounter. Judas Iscariot met the best teacher, but sadly he did not learn well.

A good way to learn through good encounters is asking questions, listening and taking notes. When you meet someone outstanding, speak less. Prepare questions and ask honestly about what you have in mind. Ask how he became a great person. Ask who influenced him, and which books influenced him. Ask him how he became successful and how he overcame obstacles. Ask how he broke through. Ask how he stood back up from failures. Ask how to work through problems. Ask how to make excellent choices.

It is also important to listen carefully while asking questions. Listening is the way to obtain wisdom. While listening, ask deeper questions. Write down the wisdom, knowledge, and principles you learned as you listen. Notetaking shows that you cherish what you learn. Taking note shows that you respect your teacher. Taking note also means that you will use what you have learned. It also means that you will take it one step further and pass it on to another person.
