[목회서신] 가르침으로 더욱 잘 배우는 지혜 (2018.09.23)

잘 배우는 사람이 잘 가르칩니다. 잘 배운다는 것은 올바로 배우는 것을 의미합니다. 올바로 배워야 올바로 자랍니다. 우리가 올바로 배울 때 올바로 성장합니다. 사람은 배움을 통해 자신이 변화되고 성장할 때 놀라운 기쁨을 경험하게 됩니다. 배움의 기쁨을 경험할수록 더욱 배움을 갈망하게 됩니다. 배움의 유익을 경험할수록 더욱 배움을 열망하게 됩니다. 배움은 결과를 낳습니다. 배우기 전과 배운 후와는 큰 차이를 만듭니다. 그런 까닭에 배우기 위해 책을 사거나 세미나에 참석하는 것은 낭비가 아니라 거룩한 투자입니다.

잘 배워 성장을 경험한 사람은 다른 사람을 양육하는 일에 헌신하게 됩니다. 왜냐하면 본인이 배움을 통해 누리고 있는 혜택을 다른 사람과 나누고 싶은 까닭입니다. 배운다는 것은 아름다운 일입니다. 고상한 일입니다. 배운다는 것은 학습(學習)을 의미합니다. 학습(學習)이란 단어는 배운다는 의미의 학(學)과 익힌다는 뜻의 습(習)이 합쳐진 단어입니다. 배운 것으로 만족해서는 안 됩니다. 배운 내용을 몸으로 익혀야 합니다. 배운 것을 익히기 위해서는 반복해서 복습하고 연습해야 합니다. 습(習)과 관련된 단어들 중에 복습(復習), 연습(練習), 습관(習慣) 등이 있습니다. 모두 배운 것을 반복해서 연습함으로 익히는 것과 관련되어 있습니다. 습(習)이란 단어는 새가 날갯짓을 한다는 의미입니다. 어린 새가 자란 후에 바로 하늘을 나는 것이 아닙니다. 반복되는 날갯짓을 통해 하늘을 비상하게 됩니다. 나는 법을 배우고 익혀서 하늘을 날게 됩니다.

우리는 쉽게 배우려고 합니다. 하지만 쉽게 배운 것은 쉽게 잊어버립니다. 반면에 어렵게 배운 것은 쉽게 잊지 않습니다. 특별히 배운 것을 반복해서 익힌 것은 우리 존재 속에 스며들어 있는 것을 경험하게 됩니다. 그런 까닭에 배운 것을 실천하는 것이 중요합니다. 우리가 배운 것을 실천할 때 배운 것의 의미를 확실히 깨닫게 됩니다. 이것을 우리는 경험학습이라고 말합니다. 예수님도 배운 것을 실천하는 사람이 지혜로운 사람이라고 말씀합니다(마 7:24). 반면에 말씀을 듣고 실천하지 않은 사람은 어리석은 사람이라고 말씀합니다(마 7:26).

배운 것을 깊이 깨닫는 또 하나의 길은 배운 것을 다른 사람에게 가르치는 것입니다. “가르침으로 두 번 배운다.”라는 말이 있습니다. 우리가 배운 것을 누군가에게 가르칠 때 우리는 두 번 배우는 경험을 하게 됩니다. 가르친다는 것은 엄밀한 의미에서 나누는 것입니다. 우리가 먼저 배운 것을 나누는 것이 가르침입니다. 요즈음 가르친다는 표현을 별로 좋아하는 것 같지 않습니다. 누가 우리에게 무엇인가를 가르치려고 하면 “당신이 누군데 나를 가르치려 드느냐”라고 말할 때가 있습니다. 그런 까닭에 가르치는 사람은 조심스럽게 그리고 지혜롭게 가르쳐야 합니다. 무엇보다 겸손히 가르쳐야 합니다. 겸손하게 가르치는 길은 가르치는 사람과 더불어 함께 배우는 것입니다.

겸손히 배우는 자세로 가르치는 사람이 훌륭한 교사입니다. 모든 가르침의 근본은 전수에 있습니다. 가르침이란 우리가 먼저 배운 것을 전수하고 유통하는 것입니다. 바울도 복음을 전할 때 “내가 받은 것을 먼저 너희에게 전하였노니”(고전 15:3상)라고 말합니다. 배움과 나눔 속에는 일정한 질서와 체계와 조화가 있습니다. 나누기 위해서는 먼저 배워야 합니다. 또한 배운 것을 나눈다는 것은 배운 것을 나눌 수 있도록 지식을 조직화하고 체계화하는 것을 의미합니다. 배움에는 먼저 배울 것이 있고 나중에 배울 것이 있습니다. 1단계가 있고 2단계가 있습니다. 유치원에서 배울 것이 있고, 초등부와 중등부와 고등부에서 배울 것이 있습니다. 또한 대학에서 배울 것이 있습니다. 교육에는 이렇게 일정한 단계와 질서가 있습니다. 예수님이 제자들을 양육할 때 처음부터 십자가에 대해 말씀하신 것이 아닙니다. 그들을 양육한지 3년이 되었을 때 예수님은 비로소 십자가의 죽으심과 부활에 대해 가르치셨습니다(마 16:21).

예수님은 제자들을 가르치시면서 그들에게 또 다른 제자를 양육하는 재생산의 비전을 심어주셨습니다. “그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라”(마 28:19-20상). 예수님은 먼저 제자들을 가르치셨습니다. 제자들은 예수님께 배운 모든 것을 다른 사람들에게 가르쳐 지키게 함으로 또 다른 제자들을 양육했습니다. 예수님의 제자로 살아가는 우리 모두는 배우고 가르치도록 부름을 받았습니다. 한 두 사람을 선택해서 그들에게 먼저 배운 것을 전수함으로 양육하십시오. 우리는 다른 사람을 양육함으로 더욱 잘 배울 수 있습니다. 다음 시간에서는 글쓰기를 통해 더욱 잘 배우는 지혜를 나누도록 하겠습니다. 축복합니다.

The Wisdom to Learn Better Through Teaching

Good learners teach well. Learning well means learning properly. We must properly learn in order to grow up properly. When we properly learn, we can properly mature. People experience amazing joy when they change and grow through learning. The more you experience the joy of learning, the more you will desire to learn. The more you experience the benefits of learning, the more you will long for learning. Learning produces results. There’s a big difference before and after you learn. That's why buying a book or attending a seminar to learn is not a waste but a holy investment.

A person who experiences growth by learning well will devote himself to nurturing others. The reason is that he wants to share the benefits he is enjoying through learning with others. Learning is a beautiful thing. Learning is noble. Learning means studying. The term "study (學習)" in Chinese is a combination of the word “learn (學)” and the word “master (習).” You should not be satisfied with what you have just learned. You must master what you have learned. To master what you have learned, you should review and practice it over and over again. Words related to master (習) include review (復習), practice (練習), and habit (習慣). Everything is related to mastering by repeating what you have learned. The word “master (習)” actually has a meaning of a young bird flapping its wing. As a young bird grows, it does not fly right away. It soars skyward only after it repeatedly practices flapping. It flies after learning and mastering.

We want to learn effortlessly. But what we learn effortlessly is easily forgotten. On the other hand, it is not easy to forget what we learned in hard way. Especially, we experience that what we have learned through repetition permeates into our being. Therefore, it is important to practice what we have learned. When we practice what we learned, we then clearly understand its meaning. This is what we call experiential learning. Jesus says that a man who practices what he has learned is a wise man (Mt 7:24). On the other hand, He says that a man who has heard the Word and does not practice it is a fool (Mt 7:26).

Another way to deeply understand what you have learned is to teach others. There is a saying, "We learn twice by teaching." When we teach someone what we have learned, we experience learning twice. In specific, teaching means sharing. Teaching is sharing what you have first learned. These days, it seems like people don’t like the expression “teaching”. When someone tries to teach us, there are times when we say, "Who are you to teach me?" Therefore, teachers should teach carefully and wisely. Above all, we must teach humbly. The humble way to teach is to learn together with the learner.

A person who teaches in a humble manner is an excellent teacher. The foundation of all teaching lies in how well one passes it on. Teaching is passing on and distributing what we have learned first. When Paul preaches the gospel, he says, "For what I received I passed on to you" (1Co 15: 3). There is a certain order, system, and harmony in learning and sharing. In order to share, you must first learn. Also, sharing what you have learned means organizing and systematizing the knowledge you gained so that you can share it with others. In learning, there is something to learn in the beginning, and also something else to learn later. There are two levels in learning. There are things we learn in kindergarten, and there are things we learn in elementary, middle, and high school. There are also things to learn in college. There is a certain level and order in education. When Jesus nurtured His disciples, He did not speak about the cross from the beginning. After He nurtured them for three years, Jesus finally taught them about his future death on the cross, and resurrection (Mt 16:21).

As Jesus taught His disciples, He gave them a vision of reproduction to nurture other disciples. "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Mt 28:19-20). Jesus first taught His disciples. Then the disciples nurtured other disciples by teaching them to obey everything they have learned from Jesus. All of us living as disciples of Jesus are called to learn and to teach. Choose one or two people to nurture by passing on what you have learned. We can learn better by nurturing others.
