[목회서신] 글쓰기를 통해 배우는 지혜 (2018.09.30)

글을 쓴다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 생일을 축하하기 위해 카드 한 장 쓰는 것도 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 하얀 빈칸을 채워나간다는 것은 어려운 일입니다. 글쓰기가 어려운 까닭은 글을 쓰기보다 말로 주로 소통하는 까닭입니다. 글을 날마다 쓰는 목회자요 저술가의 모습으로 살아가는 저도, 두 딸과 사위들 생일을 맞이해서 카드를 쓸 때면 많이 당황합니다. 사랑을 표현하는 것이 어색하고 쑥스럽기 때문입니다. 짧은 글이지만 그 글 속에 영혼을 담아야 하는 까닭입니다.

제가 처음부터 글을 잘 쓸 수 있었던 것은 아닙니다. 한 때는 글이 솟구쳐 올라오기 보다는 옛날 어머니들이 빨래를 짜듯이 글을 짜내야 했습니다. 정말 고통스러운 일이었습니다. 설교를 준비하는 것이 고문이었습니다. 때로는 주일 새벽 2시가 지나야 설교준비가 끝났습니다. 저는 설교 준비를 하는 중에 탈진을 경험했습니다. 그것은 제 지식 창고가 비어 있었기 때문이었습니다. 지식 창고가 비어 있는 까닭에 몸부림을 쳐도 빈 창고에서 꺼낼 것이 없었던 것입니다. 때로는 설교 준비를 위해 지식 창고의 바닥을 긁어내듯이 몸부림을 쳤습니다.

저는 그런 경험을 통해 저의 지식 창고에 좋은 언어, 좋은 문장, 그리고 탁월한 통찰력이 담긴 금언(金言)들을 저축하기 시작했습니다. 제가 지식 창고에 좋은 글들을 저축하는 방법은 좋은 글을 베껴 쓰는 것이었습니다. 일종의 필사(筆寫)입니다. 좋은 글을 베껴 쓰는 중에 머리가 아니라 손으로 공부하는 법을 배웠습니다. 몸으로 글을 읽는 법을 배웠습니다. 눈으로만 책을 읽는 것이 아니라 손끝으로 책을 읽는 법을 배웠습니다. 읽은 책을 필사하거나 컴퓨터에 입력하는 중에 지식이 제 존재 속에 스며드는 경험을 했습니다. 몇 년 동안 책을 꾸준히 반복해서 읽는 중에 지식 창고가 차곡차곡 쌓이는 것을 경험했습니다. 그 지식과 지식들이 함께 만나 결혼함으로 또 다른 지식을 낳는 것을 경험했습니다. 그 결과 글을 쓰는 것이 처음보다는 많이 쉬워졌습니다.

글을 쓴다는 것은 우리 전 존재가 동원되는 일입니다. 우리가 글을 쓸 때 그동안 배운 것, 읽은 것, 들은 것, 경험한 것들을 총체적으로 생각하게 됩니다. 그것들을 연결시켜 가면서 글을 쓰게 됩니다. 그런 까닭에 글을 쓴다는 것은 정말 놀라운 일입니다. 또한 우리는 글을 쓸 때, 우리가 쓰는 글을 읽으실 분들을 생각하면서 글을 쓰게 됩니다. 글은 사람과 사람 사이를 연결시켜 주는 성스러운 끈입니다. 사람과 사람 사이를 연결시켜 주는 다리입니다.

글쓰기는 배움에 이르는 길입니다. 어떤 주제를 정하고 글을 쓰면 생각이 명료해집니다. 글을 쓰는 중에 생각이 확장되고, 깊어지는 것을 경험하게 됩니다. 글쓰기를 시작할 때 생각하지 못했던 놀라운 깨달음을 얻게 됩니다. 배운 것을 자신의 생각으로 표현하는 중에 배운 것 이상의 깨달음에 이르기도 합니다. 글을 쓰는 중에 영감을 얻게 되고, 글을 쓰는 중에 지성이 깨어나는 것을 경험하게 됩니다.

설교나 강의를 들을 때 좋은 내용을 기록하는 것은 아주 중요한 일입니다. 기록한다는 것은 소중히 여긴다는 뜻입니다. 또한 기록한다는 것은 기억한다는 것이며, 기록한 내용을 나누고 싶다는 뜻을 내포하고 있습니다. 물론 설교를 들을 때 반드시 기록해야 되는 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 아무리 좋은 내용도 기록해 두지 않으면 잊게 됩니다. 우리는 기록을 통해 기억하고 보관하고 활용하게 됩니다. 우리 곁에 있는 양서(良書)는, 누군가가 기록을 통해 우리에게 전수해 준 까닭에 우리가 누리고 있는 혜택임을 잊지 말아야 합니다.

글쓰기의 유익은 책 한권에 담아도 부족할 만큼 많습니다. 우리는 글쓰기를 통해 치유를 경험하게 됩니다. 영혼의 일기를 쓰십시오. 영혼의 일기에 자신의 아픔과 고통과 감정을 표현하십시오. 그때 마음의 상처가 치유됩니다. 영혼은 정화됩니다. 글쓰기를 통해 목표 달성의 축복을 누리십시오. 목표를 글로 쓰는 사람과 쓰지 않는 사람과는 하늘과 땅의 차이라고 합니다. 목표를 글로 선명하게 쓰는 사람은 자신의 목표가 글로 쓸 만큼 소중한 것임을 압니다. 또한 목표를 선명하게 글로 쓴 사람은 목표 달성을 위해 계획을 세우고 실천에 옮기게 됩니다.

글쓰기는 문제 해결의 열쇠입니다. 문제가 있을 때 문제를 글로 쓰고 해결책을 함께 기록해 보십시오. 전에 한 번도 생각하지 못했던 해결책이 떠오르는 것을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 기도문을 글로 써 보십시오. 그 기도문이 어떻게 응답되는 가를 관찰해 보십시오. 큐티를 한 후에 깨달은 것을 큐티 노트에 기록하십시오. 그 깨달은 것을 따라 하루 종일 묵상하며 기도하십시오. 또한 큐티를 하는 분들과 함께 나누십시오. 놀라운 변화를 경험할 것입니다. 글쓰기는 글을 쓰면서 배웁니다. 말하듯이 글을 쓰십시오. 글쓰기를 통해 더욱 깊은 배움에 이르시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom Learned Through Writing

Writing is not an easy thing to do. It is not easy to write even a single birthday card. It is difficult to fill in the white blank. The reason why writing is difficult is because we communicate mainly through speaking rather than writing. I am a pastor and writer who writes daily, but I am embarrassed when I write birthday cards for my two daughters and sons-in-law. The reason is that it is awkward and embarrassing to express love. Although it is a short letter I must still put my soul into the letter.

I did not write well in the beginning. In the past, rather than being thrilled to write, I had to squeeze out the words to write just as mothers in the old days wrung out washed clothes. It was painful. Preparing to preach was like torture to me. Sometimes I couldn’t finish my sermon preparation until it was 2 o’clock in the morning on Sunday. I experienced burnout while I was preparing for sermon. It was because my knowledge storehouse was empty. So, I had nothing to take from even if I struggled. Sometimes I struggled as much as to scratch the floor of my knowledge storehouse to prepare for my sermon.

Since then I began to store good language, good sentences, and adage that contain excellent insights in my knowledge storehouse. In order to store good writings in my knowledge storehouse, I copied good writings. It was a way of transcription. While copying well-written writings, I learned how to study with my hand rather than my head. I learned how to read with my body. I learned how to read books not only with my eyes but with my fingertips. I experienced knowledge permeating into my being while I was copying the book or typing it onto my computer. Over the years, as I repeatedly read books, the knowledge I gained piled up neatly in my knowledge storehouse. Then I experienced a piece of knowledge marrying another piece of knowledge, giving birth to another knowledge. As a result, writing became a lot easier to me than the first time I wrote.

To write is to mobilize our entire being. When we write, we generally think about what we have learned, read, heard, and experienced. We write as we connect with them. That is why it is really wonderful to write. Also, when we write, we write while thinking about the people who will read our writing. Writing is a sacred rope that connects people with people. It is a bridge that connects people with people.

Writing is the way to learning. If you decide on a topic and write about it, your thoughts become clear. As you write, you will experience the expanding and the deepening of your thoughts. When you start writing, you will realize how you are able to gain an incredible understanding that you didn’t have at first. It also leads to an understanding that is beyond what you have first learned as you express what you have learned in your own words. As you write, you will get inspiration and you will awaken your intellectuality while writing.

It is very important to record good things when you hear sermons or lectures. To keep record is to cherish. It also means that you will remember, and that you want to share what you wrote. And this doesn’t mean that you have to always record when you hear sermons. But if you do not keep record of any good content, you will forget it. We remember, store, and utilize what we hear through recording. We must not forget that we have good books by our side to enjoy because someone has given them to us through writing.

There are so many benefits in writing that one book is not enough to express all the benefits. We experience healing through writing. Start a journal of the soul. Express your pain, suffering, and emotions in your journal of the soul. Then the wound of your heart will be healed. The soul will be cleansed. Enjoy the blessing of achieving your goals through writing. It is said that the person who writes their goal and the person who does not write down their goal are different like the space between the heaven and the earth. A person who writes their goal in a clear way knows that his goal is valuable enough to write. Also, those who write their goals clearly will plan and implement them in order to achieve their goals.

Writing is the key to solve problems. When you have a problem, try to write down the problem down and try to write down the solution together. You will then experience something you may have never thought of experiencing before; obtaining a solution. Write a prayer. Observe how the prayer is answered. After you have done your Q.T., record what you realized during your Q.T. in your journal. Then, meditate and pray throughout the day according to what you have realized. Also, share what you realized in Q.T. with those around you. You will also experience amazing changes. Writing is learned through writing. Write as if you are speaking. I hope you will learn deeper through writing.
