[목회서신] 사랑하면 잘 배우게 됩니다. (2018.10.07)

사랑은 배움의 원리입니다. 사랑하면 잘 배우게 됩니다. 제게 왜 책을 많이 읽고 글을 쓰느냐고 묻는다면 사랑 때문이라고 대답하곤 합니다. 사랑은 나눔입니다. 가장 좋은 것을 사랑하는 분들에게 나누는 것이 사랑입니다. 좋은 것은 혼자만 알고 있으면 안 됩니다. 좋은 것이 있으면 함께 나눠야 합니다. 우리가 복음을 나눠야 하는 이유는 복음은 이 세상에서 가장 좋은 것이기 때문입니다. 제가 쓰는 글 속에는 복음이 스며들어 있습니다. 왜 사랑이 배움의 원리가 되는 것일까요? 왜 사랑하면 잘 배우게 되는 것일까요?

사랑은 관심이기 때문입니다. 사랑은 누군가에게 관심을 갖고, 어떤 주제에 관심을 갖게 될 때 시작됩니다. 우리가 학교 다닐 적에, 특별히 어떤 과목을 좋아했다면 그 과목을 가르치셨던 선생님을 좋아했을 가능성이 높습니다. 우리는 사랑하는 스승을 통해 가장 잘 배웁니다. 우리가 누군가를 사랑하고, 어떤 주제에 관심을 갖게 되면 그 대상이나 주제를 깊이 관찰하게 됩니다. 또한 그 대상과 주제를 늘 생각하고, 집중해서 생각하게 됩니다. 집중해서 생각하게 되면 신비롭게도 이전에 보지 못했던 것을 보게 되고, 이전에 알지 못했던 것을 알게 됩니다. 깊은 관심을 갖게 되면 질문하게 됩니다. 탁월한 질문은 배움의 문을 활짝 열어줍니다.

사랑하면 기억하게 됩니다. 우리가 경험하는 것처럼 무엇인가를 기억한다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 만일 우리가 기억을 잘할 수 있다면 어떤 언어도 통달할 수 있을 것입니다. 우리는 기억을 통해 좋은 관계를 맺게 됩니다. 만나는 사람들의 이름을 기억하고, 그 이름을 불러 준다면 큰 변화를 경험하게 될 것입니다. 어떻게 잘 기억할 수 있을까요? 그 비밀은 사랑에 있습니다. 우리는 사랑하는 것을 기억합니다. 기억은 두뇌의 문제라기보다 사랑과 관심의 문제입니다.

성경 암송의 비밀도 사랑에 있습니다. 우리가 말씀을 사랑하게 되면 그 말씀을 잘 기억할 수 있습니다. 물론 기억을 잘하기 위해서는 사랑과 함께 지혜가 필요합니다. 기억을 잘하는 분들은 새롭게 기억하기 원하는 것과 이미 알고 있는 것에 관련을 맺어가며 기억하는 것을 봅니다. 기억의 문제를 짧은 사랑의 공식으로 말하기에는 어려운 점이 있습니다. 저도 영어를 유창하게 하고 싶은 데 그것이 쉽지 않습니다. 그래서 가끔은 나는 영어를 사랑하는데 영어가 나를 싫어하는 것은 아닌지 고심할 때도 있습니다.

사랑하면 즐거워하게 됩니다. 사랑의 깊이는 좋아하는 경지를 넘어 즐거워하는 것입니다. 하나님을 깊이 사랑한다는 것은 하나님을 즐거워하는 것입니다. 배움은 한 순간에 이루어지는 것이 아니라 반복과 지속을 통해 이루어집니다. 그런 까닭에 배우는 내용이 즐겁지 않다면 반복하고 지속할 수 없습니다. 진지한 것은 오래가지 못합니다. 반면에 즐거운 것은 오래갑니다. 우리 인간은 즐거움을 추구하는 존재입니다. 고통은 어떻게 해서든 피하고, 즐거움을 추구하는 존재입니다. 그래서 무엇이든 재미가 있으면 반복하게 됩니다. 모든 재미가 다 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 재미는 인간을 파멸로 몰아갑니다. 죄의 쾌락은 경계해야 합니다. 잘못된 쾌락에 호기심을 갖는 것을 경계해야 합니다. 그 이유는 죄의 쾌락을 반복하게 되면 파멸에 이를 수 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 가능한 우리를 유익하게 하는 즐거움을 추구해야 합니다. 성스러운 즐거움을 추구해야 합니다.

사랑하면 변화됩니다. 괴테는 “우리는 우리가 사랑하는 것에 의해 모양과 형태가 만들어진다.”고 말했습니다. 우리가 사랑하는 것이 우리를 만듭니다. 우리를 변화시킵니다. 누군가를 사랑하게 되면 사랑하는 대상의 소원대로 자신을 변화시킵니다. 우리가 누군가를 사랑하게 되면 사랑하는 대상을 닮게 됩니다. 나다나엘 호돈이 쓴 《큰 바위 얼굴》에 나오는 어니스트처럼 우리가 누군가를 흠모하며 자주 바라보게 되면 그를 닮게 됩니다. 변화의 비밀은 사랑에 있습니다. 우리가 누군가를 진정으로 사랑하게 되면 그를 점점 닮게 됩니다. 사랑처럼 강력한 변화 촉진제는 없습니다. 우리가 누군가를 진정으로 사랑하게 되면 그 대상의 기대를 저버리지 않기 위해 더욱 노력하고 훈련하게 됩니다.

사랑의 절정은 나눔에 있습니다. 사랑의 기쁨은 나눔의 기쁨입니다. 배워서 남 주기 위해 배우십시오. 배워서 나누는 기쁨은 사랑의 기쁨입니다. 배운 것을 나누는 중에 우리는 더욱 잘 배우게 됩니다. 더욱 깊이 배우게 됩니다. 더욱 풍성한 배움에 이르게 됩니다. 배운 것을 나눌 때는 자신의 언어가 아니라 상대방의 언어로 나누십시오. 상대방이 이해할 수 있고, 공감할 수 있는 언어로 나누십시오. 사랑처럼 소중한 것은 없습니다. 십자가의 성 요한은 “인간의 영혼은 사랑하는 것으로 인해 산다.”고 말했습니다. 그렇다면 말씀을 사랑하고, 하나님을 더욱 사랑하십시오. 또한 우리 주위에 있는 사람들을 더욱 사랑하십시오. 하나님의 사랑은 언제나 우리 안에 그리고 우리 곁에 있습니다. 성도님들을 주님 안에서 사랑합니다.

If You Love, You Will Learn Well!

Love is the principle of learning. If you love, you will learn well. If you ask me why I read and write a lot of books, I would say that it is because of love. Love is to share. To love is to share the best with those whom you love. You shouldn’t just keep good things for yourself. If you have something good, you should share it. We share the gospel because the gospel is the best thing in the world. The gospel permeates in my writing. Why is love the principle of learning? Why do you learn well if you love?

The reason is because love is to have interest. Love begins when someone is interested in someone or in some subject. In school, if we liked a certain subject, it is very likely that we liked the teacher who taught the subject. We learn the best from the teacher we love. When we love someone or when we are interested in a topic, we tend to observe the person or subject in depth. Also, we always think about the person and subject with concentration. When you focus and think, mysteriously, you will see things that were unseen and you will know what you did not know. When you have deep interest, you will ask questions. An excellent question widely opens the door to learning.

If you love, you will remember. As we have experienced, it is not easy to remember something. If we can remember well, we might be able to master any language. We can form good relationships through memory. If you remember the name of the person you meet and call them by name, you will experience a big change. How can we remember well? The secret is in love. We remember what we love. Memory is a matter of love and care rather than a matter of the brain.

The secret of Bible recitation is also in love. When we love the Word, we can remember it well. Of course, in order to remember well, we need wisdom along with love. Those who are good at memory relate what they already know and what they want to remember. It is difficult to formulate the matter of memory into a short formula of love. I want to be fluent in English, but it is not easy. So sometimes I think that English might not like me although I love English.

If you love, you will rejoice. The depth of love is to rejoice in something beyond the stage of liking. To love God deeply is to rejoice in God. Learning is not done in one moment but through repetition and continuation. Therefore, if the content you learn is not fun for you, you cannot continue with repetition. Serious things do not last long. On the other hand, fun things last long. We human beings pursue joy. We try to avoid pain at all cost and seek for joy. So, if something is fun, we continue doing it. Not all fun is good though. Fun sometimes lead people to ruin. We must guard our hearts from the pleasure of sin. We must guard our hearts from being interested in wrong pleasure. The reason is because it can ruin us if we repeat seeking the pleasure of sin. If possible, we must pursue the joy that gives us benefit. We must seek sacred joy.

If you love, you will change. Goethe said, "We are shaped and fashioned by what we love.” What we love shapes us. It changes us. When you love someone, you change yourself as the person wishes. When we love someone, we become like our beloved. Like Ernest in the "The Great Stone Face" written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, if we admire someone and look at them often, we will become like them. The secret to change is in love. When we really love someone, we become more and more like them. There is no other catalyst that is as strong as love. When we truly love someone, we are more committed and disciplined not to disappoint them.

The climax of love is sharing. The joy of love is the joy of sharing. Learn so that you can share what you learn. The joy of learning and sharing is the joy of love. As we share what we learn, we learn better. We learn more deeply. It will lead you to a more abundant learning experience. When you share what you have learned, share it with the language of the other person, not your own language. Share it with a language that the other person can understand and empathize with. Nothing is as precious as love. St. John of the Cross said, "The human soul lives for the things it loves." If so, love the Word and love God more. Also love the people around you more. God's love is always in us and near us. I love you in the Lord.
