[목회서신] 날마다 새롭게 시작하게 하시는 하나님의 은혜 (2018.10.21)

최근에 저는 로널드 롤하이저가 쓴 《하느님의 불꽃, 인간의 불꽃》을 읽는 중에 이전에 한번도 생각하지 못했던 것을 깨달았습니다. 저는 예수님은 인격자이시기 때문에 우리가 문을 열어 주어야 우리에게 들어오신다는 생각을 했습니다. 그 근거는 요한계시록 3장 20절의 말씀입니다. “볼지어다 내가 문 밖에 서서 두드리노니 누구든지 내 음성을 듣고 문을 열면 내가 그에게로 들어가 그와 더불어 먹고 그는 나와 더불어 먹으리라”(계 3:20). 그런데 로널드 롤하이저는 때로는 예수님이 우리가 문을 열어주지 않아도 우리에게 들어오신다는 사실을 이야기해 줍니다.

요한복음 20장에 보면 예수님을 버리고 도망갔던 제자들은 유대인들이 두려워서 모인 곳의 문들을 닫았습니다. 또한 그들은 수치심으로 괴로워했습니다. 그들은 그토록 자신들을 사랑해 주신 예수님을 배신했다는 사실 때문에 마음 아파했습니다. 그들은 의욕을 상실했습니다. 그들은 모든 것이 끝났다고 생각했습니다. 그런데 예수님이 잠겨 있는 문을 통해 그들이 모여 있던 방에 들어오셨습니다. 그들이 문을 열어 준 것이 아닙니다. 예수님은 두려워하는 그들에게 거듭 평강을 빌어주셨습니다(요 20:19, 26). 그들이 다시 일어설 수 있는 힘을 불어 넣어주셨습니다(요 20:22). 로널드 롤하이저의 글을 천천히 읽어 보십시오.

“잠겨 있는 문을 통해 들어가셨다는 그리스도의 이미지는 아마도 신앙 전체에서 가장 위로가 되는 말씀일 것이다. ... 이 말씀은 우리 스스로 자신을 돕지 못하는 어쩔 수 없는 상황에서도 하나님은 우리를 도울 수 있는 분이시라는 뜻이다. 하느님은 우리가 정말로 나약하고 절망하고 가장 보잘것없는 처지에 있더라도 문을 열고 우리 안으로 들어오실 수 있는 분이심을 의미한다.” (로널드 롤하이저, 『하느님의 불꽃, 인간의 불꽃』, 성바오로, 177쪽)

예수님은 낙심 중에 있는 그들을 용서하셨습니다. 그들에게 새롭게 시작할 수 있는 은혜를 베풀어 주셨습니다. 그들의 실수는 영원한 것이 아니며, 하나님의 은혜로 모든 죄가 용서 받을 수 있음을 말씀해 주셨습니다. 하나의 길이 끝나면 새로운 길이 열린다는 진리를 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 박노해 시인의 〖길이 끝나면〗이라는 시를 묵상해 보십시오.

하나님은 우리가 실패할 수밖에 없는 존재임을 아십니다. 만약 우리에게 실패가 없다면 십자가는 필요 없을 것입니다. 십자가는 우리 죄를 용서하는 곳입니다. 쓰러진 우리를 다시 일으켜 세워주는 곳입니다. 거듭 새 출발할 수 있도록 도와주는 곳입니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 거듭 십자가 앞으로 나아갑니다. 하나님의 은혜는 한 번으로 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님의 은혜는 계속해서 찾아옵니다. 실패했다고, 실수했다고 거기서 인생이 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님의 은혜와 기회는 거듭 주어집니다. 하나님의 사랑은 날마다 새롭게 시작하는 은혜를 베푸시는 사랑입니다. 그러므로 날마다 새롭게 시작하는 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

The Grace of God to Start Anew Everyday

Recently while reading "Forgotten Among the Lilies" written by Ronald Rolheiser, I realized what I never realized before. I believed that we must personally open the door to our hearts for Jesus in order for him to come in, because He is a person. The basis for this belief is in Revelation 3:20. "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me." (Rev 3:20). But, Ronald Rolheiser tells us that sometimes Jesus comes into our hearts even if we do not open the door for Him.

In John 20, the disciples who had abandoned Jesus and fled closed their doors because they were afraid of the Jews. They also suffered from shame. They were hurt because of the fact that they betrayed Jesus, who loved them so much. They lost their will. They thought that everything was over. But Jesus came into the room where they were gathered through the locked door. They did not open the door. Jesus repeatedly blessed those who were afraid with peace (Jn 20:19, 26). He gave them the strength to rise again (Jn 20:22). Please slowly read Ronald Rolheiser's writing.

“The image of Christ going through locked doors is perhaps the most consoling within our entire faith … it means that God can help us even when we cannot help ourselves. God can empower us even when we are too weak and despairing, even minimally, to open the door to let him in.” (Ronald Rolheiser, “Forgotten Among the Lilies,” Galilee/Doubleday, p. 148)

Jesus forgave those who were discouraged. He gave them new grace to start anew. He told them that their mistakes were not eternal. All sins could be forgiven by the grace of God. He taught them the truth of a new path opening when one path comes to an end. Please meditate on the following poem. It’s called, “When the road is over” by the Poet Park, No-hae.

A new road opens.

If one door is closed, there

The other door opens.

If the winter is deep, there

New spring walks out.

If I fall, there

The bigger “I” stand up

The best end is the true beginning.

Honest despair is the beginning of hope

God knows that we are beings that can’t stop from failing. If we do not fail, we wouldn’t need the cross. The cross is where our sins are forgiven. It is the place to rise up again. It is a place where God helps us to start a new journey again and again. Therefore, we go forward to the cross again. God's grace is not a one-time event. God's grace continues to come. Even if you fail or make a mistake, life is not over. God's grace and opportunities are given to us again and again. God 's love is a love that gives us new grace every day. Therefore, I wish that you all live a new life every day.
