[목회서신] 거룩한 혼돈, 그리고 아름다운 창조

태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시기 전의 상황은 혼돈 그 자체였습니다. “땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고”(창 1:2상). 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암은 아름다워 보이지 않습니다. 하지만 그다음 말씀 속에 희망이 담겨 있습니다. “하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행하시니라”(창 1:2하). 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암 위에 하나님의 영이 함께 하셨습니다. 여기서 “운행하시니라”의 히브리어는 “라하프(rachaph, רָחַף)”입니다. 이 단어는 “암탉이 알을 품는다. 날개를 치다. 긴장을 풀게 하다. 움직이다”라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다.

암탉이 알을 품으면 그냥 품는 것이 아닙니다. 21일 동안 알을 돌려가면서 품습니다. 때가 되면 암탉이 품은 알들 속에서 병아리가 태어납니다. 암탉의 품과 그 날개는 따뜻합니다. 따뜻함은 생명을 소생케 하는 온도입니다. 병아리가 태어난 후에도 암탉은 병아리들을 자신의 날개 아래 품고 보호합니다. 하나님의 영이신 성령님께서 암탉이 알을 품는 것처럼 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암을 품으셨습니다. 사랑은 품음에 있습니다. 아름다운 창조는 사랑스러운 품음에 있습니다. 사람이 성장하고 사랑을 느끼는 곳은 따뜻한 품입니다. 성령님은 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암으로 고통스러워하는 사람들을 품으십니다. 저는 그런 까닭에 창세기 1장 2절의 모습을 “거룩한 혼돈”이라고 표현하고 싶습니다. 그 이유는 “거룩한 혼돈” 속에 “아름다운 창조”가 담겨 있기 때문입니다.

우리는 혼돈을 싫어합니다. 공허를 싫어하고, 깊은 흑암을 싫어합니다. 하지만 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암이 없다면, 아름다운 창조는 이루어지지 않습니다. 창조가 있기 전에 공허가 있습니다. 그것이 하나님의 창조 원리입니다. 하나님이 일하시는 방식입니다. 하나님의 눈을 가진 사람은 혼돈 속에서 질서를, 공허 속에서 충만을, 깊은 흑암 속에서 찬란한 빛을 볼 줄 압니다.

우리가 지금 예배드리고 있는 비전 센터의 땅은 쓰레기로 가득 찬 땅이었습니다. 땅이 혼돈스러웠습니다. 쓰레기로 가득 찬 땅은 공허하며 깊은 흑암에 쌓여 있는 것과 같았습니다. 쓰레기로 가득 찬 땅은 황폐한 땅입니다. 나무를 심을 수 없는 땅입니다. 곡식을 심을 수 없는 땅입니다. 은유적인 표현으로 말씀드리면 사람이 살 수 없는 황폐한 땅입니다(욥 15:28).

우리는 비전 센터를 건축하기 전에 4,000트럭 이상의 쓰레기를 버렸습니다. 그 후에 좋은 흙을 가져다가 채웠습니다. 버림은 비움입니다. 쓰레기를 비움으로 우리는 옥토를 가져다가 채울 수 있었습니다. 버림이 있을 때 비움이 있고, 비움이 있음으로 채움이 있습니다. 그리함으로 우리가 머물게 된 이 땅은 사람이 다시 거할 수 있는 아름다운 땅이 된 것입니다(사 51:3; 암 9:14).

하나님이 제일 먼저 창조하신 것이 빛입니다. “하나님이 이르시되 빛이 있으라 하시니 빛이 있었고 빛이 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라”(창 1:3-4상). 하나님이 빛을 창조하신 후에 그 창조하신 빛을 보시고 좋아하셨습니다. “좋았더라”는 히브리어로 “토브(towb, טוֹב)”입니다. 이 단어에는 “좋은, 선한, 아름다운, 탁월한, 풍부한, 쾌활한, 행복한”이란 뜻이 내포되어 있습니다. 하나님은 친히 만드신 작품을 보시고 행복해하셨습니다. 이 빛은 모든 만물에 생명을 부여하는 원초적인 빛입니다. 하나님은 태양과 달을 만드시기 전에 빛을 창조하셨습니다. 그리함으로 모든 창조물에게 생명을 부여하시고, 모든 것을 아름답게 만드셨습니다.

새로운 작품, 새로운 발명품, 새로운 예술, 새로운 인물, 새로운 역사가 등장하기 전에 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암이 있습니다. 지혜로운 사람은 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암마저 사랑할 줄 아는 사람입니다. 성숙해진다는 것은 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암마저도 품고 사랑할 줄 안다는 것을 의미합니다. 그 속에 성령님이 아름다운 미래를 창조하시기 위해 이미 역사하고 계심을 믿는 것을 의미합니다.

예수님이 이 땅에 오실 때 세상은 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암 속에 있었습니다. 그런데 성령님은 혼돈과 공허와 흑암을 따뜻하게 품으셨습니다. 그리고 성령님으로 잉태되신 예수님의 탄생과 함께 새 창조의 역사가 시작되었습니다. 오케스트라 지휘자는 연주하기 전에 반드시 악기를 조율하는 시간을 갖습니다. 조율하는 소리는 그렇게 아름다워 보이지 않습니다. 혼돈스럽습니다. 무질서합니다. 깊은 흑암 같습니다. 하지만 음악을 정말 사랑하는 사람들은 조율하는 소리까지 사랑스럽게 듣는다고 합니다. 왜냐하면 악기를 조율하는 소리는 아름다운 음악의 전주곡이기 때문입니다. 어떤 분은 지금 인생 여정에서 혼돈과 공허와 깊은 흑암을 통과하고 있을 것입니다. 하지만 낙심하지 마십시오. 성령님이 함께 하십니다. 성령님이 그 모든 힘든 상황을 품고 계십니다. 반드시 아름다운 새 창조의 날이 찾아올 것입니다. 지금 우리 교회는 새로운 땅으로 들어와 정착하는 중에 어느 정도의 혼돈이 있음을 알아야 합니다. 하지만 거룩한 기대와 설렘을 가지고 기다리십시오. 우리 앞에는 아름답고 희망찬 미래가 기다리고 있습니다.

The Holy Chaos and The Beautiful Creation

The condition before God created the heavens and the earth in the beginning was chaos itself. "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep…” (Gen 1:2a). Chaos, emptiness and deep darkness do not look beautiful. But then hope is found in the following words, … “and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.“ (Gen 1:2b). The Spirit of God was hovering over the chaos, emptiness, and deep darkness. Here the Hebrew word for "hovering" is "rachaph (רָחַף)". The word has various meanings of "a hen broods eggs, flutter, relax, tension, and move ".

When a hen incubates her eggs, she is not plainly sitting on her eggs. She incubates her eggs by turning them for 21 days. When the time comes, chicks are born from the eggs. The hen's embrace and wings are warm. Warmth is the temperature that makes life come alive. Even after chicks are born, the hen embraces and protects her chicks under her own wings. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, had embraced chaos, emptiness, and deep darkness, just as a hen embraces her eggs. Love is in embrace. Beautiful creation is in loving embrace. The place where people grow and feel love is in the warm embrace. The Holy Spirit embraced those who suffer from chaos, emptiness, and deep darkness. Therefore, I would like to express the appearance of Genesis 1:2 as "holy chaos". The reason is that in "holy chaos" there is "beautiful creation.”

We hate chaos. We hate emptiness and deep darkness. But without chaos, emptiness, and deep darkness, beautiful creation cannot happen. There is emptiness before creation. That is the principle of God's creation. It is the way God works. A person with the eyes of God can see order in chaos, fullness in emptiness, and bright light in deep darkness.

The land of the Vision Center, where we worship now, was a land full of garbage. The ground was chaotic. The land filled with garbage was like one emptied and wrapped up in deep darkness. The land filled with garbage was a desolate land. It was a land that trees could not be planted. It was a land that grain could not be planted. Metaphorically, it was a desolate land that no man could live in (Job 15:28).

We discarded more than 4,000 trucks of garbage inside the land before building the Vision Center. After that we took good soil and filled it. To discard means to empty. We were able to take good soil and filled the land with them after emptying the land from all the garbage. Where there is discarding there is emptying, and when there is emptying there is filling. That is how this land that we are staying in has become a beautiful land where humans can abide in again (Isa 51: 3; Am 9:14).

The first thing God created was light, “And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good…” (Gen 1:3-4a). After God created the light, He saw it and loved it. "Good" in Hebrew is "towb (טוֹב)". The word implies "good, nice, beautiful, excellent, rich, cheerful, or happy". God was happy to see the work that He had made Himself. This light is the primary light that gives life to all things. God created light before making the sun and the moon. By doing so, he gave life to all creation and made everything beautiful.

There is chaos, emptiness and deep darkness before new work, new invention, new art, new character, and before new history begins. A wise man is someone who knows how to love even in chaos, emptiness, and deep darkness. To be mature means to know how to embrace and love even in chaos, emptiness, and deep darkness. It means to believe that the Holy Spirit is already working to create a beautiful future in it.

When Jesus came to earth, the world was in chaos, emptiness, and deep darkness. But the Holy Spirit warmly embraced the chaos, the emptiness, and the darkness. And with the birth of Jesus conceived by the Holy Spirit, the work of new creation began. The orchestra conductors have time to tune the instruments before playing. The tuning does not sound beautiful. It's chaotic. It’s disordered. It is like deep darkness. But those who really love music say that they love to hear even the sound of tuning. It is because the sound of tuning the instrument is a prelude to beautiful music. Some of you might go through chaos, emptiness and deep darkness in your life journey. But do not be discouraged. The Holy Spirit is with you. The Holy Spirit is embracing all those who are in difficult situations. The beautiful new creation day will surely come. We need to know that there is some amount of chaos while our church is settling down in this new land and we need to wait in this chaos with holy expectations and excitement. A beautiful, hopeful future awaits in front of us.
