[목회서신] 시선(視線) (2019.02.10)

인생의 문제는 시선(視線)의 문제입니다. 시선이란 우리 눈이 주목(注目)하는 것입니다. 시선이란 우리 눈길이 가는 방향입니다. 우리 인생은 무엇을 보며, 누구를 보며, 어디를 보느냐에 따라 달라집니다. 우리가 보는 것이 우리 마음에 들어옵니다. 그것을 관심(關心)이라고 말합니다. 우리가 보는 것이 우리 생각을 자극하고, 우리 감정을 움직입니다. 우리가 보는 것이 우리를 끌어당깁니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 보는 것을 조심해야 합니다. 마귀가 하는 일은 하나님이 원하는 것을 보지 못하게 만들고 하나님이 원하지 않는 것을 보게 만드는 것입니다. 뱀이 하와를 유혹할 때 선악과를 바라보게 했습니다. 하와가 생명나무가 아니라 선악과를 바라본 까닭에 우리 인류에게 심판과 정죄와 저주가 임했습니다.

시선은 결과를 낳습니다. 하와가 선악과를 본 즉 먹음직도 하고 보암직도 하고 지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기까지 했습니다(창 3:6상). 결국 그녀는 선악과를 따 먹었습니다. 거기서 멈추지 않았습니다. 자기와 함께 한 남편에게도 주워 먹게 했습니다(창 3:6하). 잘못된 시선은 집착을 낳습니다. 집착이란 하나님이 원하지 않는 것을 갈망하는 것입니다. 주목(注目)이란 하나님이 원하시는 것을 바라보는 것입니다. 성숙한 믿음이란 하나님의 눈으로 하나님이 원하시는 것을 바라보는 것을 의미합니다.

시선 관리가 인생 관리입니다. 시선 관리가 믿음 관리입니다. 12명의 정탐꾼 가운데 10명의 정탐꾼은 하나님을 바라보지 못했습니다. 오히려 가나안 땅에 살고 있는 거인들을 보았습니다. 그래서 두려워했고, 하나님의 약속의 땅을 악평했습니다. 그들이 거인을 바라본 까닭에 자신들을 메뚜기로 여겼습니다(민 13:33). 반면에 여호수아과 갈렙은 하나님을 바라보았습니다. 그런 까닭에 가나안 사람들을 그들의 밥으로 여겼습니다(민 14:9, 개역한글). 그들은 거인을 본 것이 아니라 그들과 함께하신 하나님을 바라보았습니다. 하나님의 시선으로 가나안 땅을 바라보았습니다. 그런 까닭에 가나안 땅을 심히 아름다운 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이라고 보고했습니다(민 14:8-9).

예수님을 유혹한 마귀는 예수님께 천하만국과 그 영광을 보여주었습니다(마 4:8). 하지만 예수님의 시선은 마귀가 보여주는 천하만국과 그 영광에 머물지 않았습니다. 예수님의 시선은 하나님 아버지와 그분의 영광에 고정되어 있었습니다. 마귀와 세상은 우리 시선을 혼란스럽게 만듭니다. 산만하게 만듭니다. 그리함으로 우리를 불안하게 만들고 두렵게 합니다. 성령님은 우리 시선을 예수님께 두도록 도와주십니다. 하나님의 영광과 더 나은 본향을 바라보게 하십니다. 우리가 구원해야 할 영혼들을 바라보게 하십니다. 예수님이 이 땅에서 사시는 동안 예수님의 시선은 잃어버린 영혼들을 향해 있었고, 그들을 구원하는 것을 최상의 기쁨으로 여기셨습니다.

사람은 자신의 시선에 따라 감사의 사람이 되기도 하고 불평의 사람이 되기도 합니다. 우리 시선이 하나님이 이미 주신 것에 머물고, 이미 주신 복을 세워보는 순간, 감사로 충만하게 됩니다. 반면에 우리 시선이 남이 가진 것에 머물고, 남이 받은 복을 세워볼 때 질투하게 됩니다. 감사란 자신이 받은 복을 세워 보는 것입니다. 질투란 남이 받은 복을 세워 보는 것입니다. 자족이란 이미 받은 것에 감사하고 그 받은 것을 누릴 줄 아는 것을 의미합니다. 불만이란 하나님이 주신 복을 망각하고 남이 소유한 것에 집착할 때 생기는 감정입니다.

말씀 묵상이란 말씀에 우리 시선이 머무는 것을 의미합니다. 말씀에 우리 시선이 오래 머물 때, 말씀 속에서 살아 역사하시는 하나님을 만나게 됩니다. 말씀에 오래 머물수록 집중력이 깊어집니다. 눈에 보이지 않는 것까지 보게 됩니다. 또한 깊은 통찰력을 얻게 됩니다. 깊은 깨달음을 얻게 됩니다. 보이는 것이 전부가 아닙니다. 보이는 것은 빙산의 일각에 불과합니다. 집중력을 키우게 되면 빙산 아래 감춘 것들을 보게 됩니다.

깊이 볼 줄 아는 사람은 눈에 보이는 것보다 눈에 보이지 않는 것을 가꿀 줄 압니다. 나무의 생명은 뿌리에 있습니다. 뿌리는 보이지 않습니다. 뿌리는 자신을 드러내지 않습니다. 하지만 나무의 미래는 보이지 않는 뿌리에 있습니다. 뿌리의 깊이와 넓이가 나무의 높이와 넓이를 결정합니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무는 흔들리지 않습니다. 깊이 있는 사람은 뿌리 깊은 나무처럼 내면을 가꿉니다. 진정한 실력은 내면을 가꾸는 힘입니다. 우리는 이런 힘을 내공(內功)이라고 말합니다. 내공이란 내면에 쌓아둔 능력입니다. 내공이란 실력을 감추는 능력입니다. 내공을 쌓은 사람은 역경의 순간에, 뿌리 깊은 나무처럼 흔들리지 않습니다. 오히려 시련의 때에 더욱 빛을 발합니다. 다윗은 하나님을 항상 그 앞에 모셨습니다(시 16:8). 우리가 다윗처럼 하나님을 항상 우리 앞에 모실 때 요동치 않게 됩니다. 또한 오직 하나님 한 분으로 충분함을 깨닫게 됩니다. 영성 훈련이란 우리 시선을 늘 하나님께 집중하는 훈련입니다.

Gaze

The problems of life are related to problems of gaze. Gaze is what our eyes focus on. Gaze is the direction of where our eyes are placed upon. Our life depends on what we see, whom we look at, and where we look. What we look at comes into our hearts. We call it an interest. What we see stimulates our thoughts and moves our feelings. What we see attracts us. That is why we must be careful on what we see. What the devil does is to make us not see what God wants us to see, but see what God does not want us to see. When the serpent tempted Eve, he made her look at the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Because Eve looked at the fruit of the tree of knowledge, not the fruit of the tree of life, judgement, condemnation, and cursing came upon our humanity.

Gaze brings about results. Eve saw that the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom (Ge 3:6a). And in result, she ate the fruit of the tree (Ge 3:6b). She did not stop there. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. Wrong gaze produces obsession. Obsession means to have desire for what God does not want. Attention means to look at what God wants. Mature faith means looking at what God wants through His eye.

The management of your gaze is also life management. The management of gaze is also faith management. Of the twelve spies, ten spies did not look to God. Instead, they saw giants living in the land of Canaan. So, they were afraid, and they spread a bad report about the promised land that God had for them. And as they looked upon the giants, they saw themselves as grasshoppers (Nu 13:33). On the other hand, Joshua and Caleb looked upon God. Therefore, they regarded the Canaanites as their prey (Nu 14:9 NAS). They did not look at the giants but looked upon God who was with them. They looked into the land of Canaan through God's eyes. Therefore, they reported the land of Canaan to be a very beautiful land, a land flowing with milk and honey (Nu 14:8-9).

The devil who tempted Jesus showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor (Mt 4:8). However, Jesus' gaze did not stay on the kingdoms of the world and their splendor that the devil showed. Jesus' gaze was fixed on the Heavenly Father and His glory. The devil and the world confuse our gaze. They make us distracted and by doing so, they make us uneasy and feel afraid. The Holy Spirit helps us to keep our eyes on Jesus. He allows us to look upon the glory of God and our higher home. He allows us to look at the souls that we need to save. While Jesus lived on this earth, His gaze was towards the lost souls, and it was His greatest pleasure to save them.

A person becomes a person of gratitude or a person of complaints according to his own gaze. When our gaze stays on what God has already given us, and when we count the blessings that we were already given, we will be full of gratitude. On the other hand, when our gaze stays on what others have, and when we count the blessings that others have received, we will become jealous. Gratitude is to count the blessings that we have received. Jealousy is to count the blessings that others have received. Contentment means to appreciate and enjoy what we have already received. Complaints are emotions that come from being obsessed over what others have and from forgetting God’s blessings.

Meditation on the Word means that our gaze stays on the Word. When our gaze stays on the Word for a long time, we encounter God who lives and works through the Word. The longer you stay in the Word, the deeper you will have concentration. You will see things that are unseen. You will also gain deep insights. You will gain deep understanding. Visible things are not everything. What you see is just the tip of the iceberg. When you develop concentration, you will see things that are hidden - under the iceberg.

Those who know how to look deeply know how to cultivate what is unseen rather than what they can see. The life of the tree is in the roots. Roots are invisible. Roots do not reveal themselves. But the future of the tree is in these invisible roots. The depth and width of the roots determine the height and width of the tree. A deep-rooted tree does not shake. Similarly, a deep person cultivates inner self like a deep-rooted tree. True competence is the power to cultivate the inner self. We call this the inner force. Inner force refers to the power inside. Inner force is the power to hide your skills. The person with inner force does not shake, like a deep-rooted tree, at the moment of adversity. Rather, he shines more in times of trials. David always put God before him (Ps 16:8). We will not be shaken when we put God before us, like David. Also, we realize that God alone is enough. Spiritual discipline is the training to always focus our gaze on God.
