[목회 서신] 독수리처럼 비상하는 지혜 (2019.06.02)

하나님은 우리가 독수리처럼 비상(飛翔)하기 원하십니다. 하나님은 히브리 민족을 애굽에서 구원하여 독수리 날개로 업어 그들을 인도하셨다고 말씀합니다(출 19:4하). 하나님은 독수리를 만드신 분입니다. 그런 까닭에 독수리가 어떻게 하늘을 비상하는 가를 잘 아십니다. 독수리는 새들 중의 왕입니다. 독수리는 높이 날고 멀리 날아갑니다. 높이 나는 새가 멀리 날게 되어 있습니다. 또한 높이 나는 새가 멀리 볼 수 있습니다.

독수리의 시력은 아주 탁월합니다. 2km 떨어져 있는 토끼의 미세한 움직임을 식별할 수 있을 만큼 시력이 좋습니다. 하나님은 우리가 독수리의 눈을 가지고 멀리 보고 정확하게 보기 원하십니다. 독수리의 지혜는 자신의 힘이 아닌 다른 힘을 선용할 줄 압니다. 초원의 독수리들은 아프리카로 가는 도중 온난기류를 탑니다. 비상을 위해 넓은 날개를 사용하면서 보이지 않는 엘리베이터를 타고 활강합니다. 온난기류를 타고 활강하는 동안 긴 여행에 대비해 에너지를 저장합니다. 이 에너지를 사용해 비행하면 재충전을 위해 멈추지 않고도 6400km나 날아갈 수 있습니다. 독수리는 온난기류를 알아보는 지식이 있습니다. 독수리는 자신의 힘만으로 비상하지 않습니다. 그는 온난 기류를 통해 하늘로 비상합니다. 또한 폭풍우가 오면 두 날개를 펴서 폭풍우를 타고 하늘로 비상합니다. 어떻게 하면 우리도 독수리처럼 비상하는 삶을 살 수 있을까요?

첫째, 하나님이 주시는 힘으로 비상할 수 있습니다. 육의 힘으로는 비상할 수 없습니다. 오직 하나님이 주시는 새 힘으로 비상할 수 있습니다. “오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개 치며 올라감 같을 것이요”(사 40:31상). 하나님이 주시는 새 힘은 성령님의 능력을 의미합니다. 어떻게 하나님이 주시는 신령한 힘을 얻을 수 있을까요? 하나님을 앙망(仰望)할 때 가능합니다. 앙망이란 우러러 바라보는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님을 우러러 바라볼 때 새 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 그렇다면 하나님을 앙망한다는 것은 구체적으로 무엇을 의미할까요?

하나님을 앙망한다는 것은 하나님을 바라보는 것입니다. 하나님께 시선을 고정하는 것입니다. 하나님을 앙망한다는 것은 하나님 앞에서 기다리는 것입니다. 하나님을 신뢰함으로 기다리는 것입니다. 하나님께 기도하며 기다리는 것입니다. 약속의 말씀을 붙잡고 기다리는 것입니다. 거룩한 기대를 가지고 기다리는 것입니다. 소망을 품고 기다리는 것입니다. 기다림은 동경입니다. 기다림은 하나님을 사랑하는 것입니다. 우리는 사랑하는 대상에게 초점을 맞추고 주의 깊게 바라봅니다. 우리 인생은 초점 맞추기입니다. 우리가 환경이나 사람에게 초점을 맞추면 쉽게 실망하고 낙망하게 됩니다. 하지만 하나님께 초점을 맞출 때 새 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 새 힘을 “얻는다(renew)”는 히브리어 “할라프”(chalaph, חָלַף)는 “더 나은 것으로 바꾸다, 다른 것으로 대체하다”라는 뜻이 있습니다. 하나님을 앙망할 때 하나님은 육의 힘을 영의 힘으로, 우리 연약한 힘을 하나님의 강한 힘으로 바꾸어 주십니다. 그때 우리는 비상할 수 있습니다.

둘째, 비움을 통해 비상할 수 있습니다. 비움은 떠남입니다. 독수리가 비상하는 법을 배우기 위해서는 먼저 둥지를 떠나야 합니다. 버리고 떠날 때 새로운 경지에 이르게 됩니다. 유영만교수는 “나무도 낙엽을 버려야 새순을 만들 수 있다. 강물도 자신을 버려야 바다에 도달할 수 있다. 어제를 버려야 오늘을 맞이할 수 있고, 오늘을 버려야 내일로 나아갈 수 있다.”라고 말합니다. 어미 독수리는 새끼 독수리에게 비상하는 법을 가르치기 위해 먼저 보금자리를 떠나게 만듭니다. 높은 둥지에서 새끼 독수리를 떨어뜨립니다(신 32:11). 새끼 독수리가 아직 나는 법을 몰라 땅으로 곤두박질할 때, 어미 독수리는 그의 날개를 펴서 새끼를 받아 업고 다시 높은 곳으로 올라갑니다. 그리고 다시 떨어뜨립니다. 그런 과정을 통해 새끼 독수리는 두 날개를 펴고 비상하는 법을 배웁니다.

비움은 몸을 가볍게 하는 것입니다. 무거운 새는 높이 날 수 없습니다. 새는 뼛속까지 비워냈기 때문에 높이 날 수 있습니다. 독수리처럼 비상하기 위해서는 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어 버려야 합니다. 탐욕과 복수심과 미움과 이기심을 버려야 합니다. 비상하기 원한다면 용서해야 할 사람을 용서하십시오. 복수심을 내려놓고 용서할 때 비상하게 됩니다. 또한 비상하기 위해서는 기도하고 찬양해야 합니다. 영적으로 비상한다는 것은 하나님의 보좌에 이르는 것을 의미합니다. 카우만 여사는 “하나님의 보좌에 이르기 위해서는 영혼의 두 날개, 즉 기도와 찬양의 날개가 필요하다.”라고 말했습니다. 하나님은 우리를 독수리처럼 살라고 부르셨습니다. 날마다 하나님을 앙망하는 중에 새 힘을 얻어 비상하는 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom to Soar as an Eagle

God wants us to soar like an eagle. God says that he saved the Israelites from Egypt and carried them on eagles’ wings (Ex 19:4). God is the one who created eagles. Therefore, he knows how eagles soar in the sky. The eagle is the king of birds. The eagle flies high and flies far away. The birds that fly high will fly far away. Also, the birds that fly high will look far away.

The sight of an eagle is very excellent. Their sight is good enough to recognize the fine movement of a rabbit that is 2 kilometers away. God wants us to see afar and precisely with the eyes of an eagle. The wisdom of the eagle is knowing how to use other powers instead of your own. Eagles that in the meadow take warm turbulence on their way to Africa. They use their wide wings to soar and to glide in an invisible elevator. They save their energy for a long trip while gliding in the warm turbulence. If they fly with this energy, they can fly up to 6,400 kilometers without stopping to recharge. Eagles have the knowledge to recognize warm turbulence. Eagles do not soar with its own strength alone. It soars to the sky through the warm turbulence. Also, when a storm comes, it spreads its two wings to fly through the storm and soars to the sky. How can we live like a soaring eagle?

First, we can soar by the power of God. We cannot soar by the power of our flesh. Only by God's new strength can we soar. "But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint" (Isa 40:31). God's new strength refers to the power of the Holy Spirit. How can we gain spiritual power, which God gives us? It is possible when we hope in God. Having hope means to look upon. When we look upon God, we gain new strength. What, then, specifically does it mean to hope in God?

To hope in God is to look upon God. It is to fix our eyes on God. To hope in God is to wait before God. It is to wait by trusting God. It is to wait while praying to God. It is to wait as we hold onto the word of his promises. It is to wait with holy expectation. It is to wait with hope. Waiting is longing. Waiting is to love God. We focus on our loved ones and look carefully. Our life is also focusing on something. When we focus on the environment or people, we are easily disappointed and discouraged. But when we focus on God, we will gain new strength. The word “renew” is "chalaph" (חָלַף) in Hebrews, and it means to "change to something better, replace.” When we look upon God, God replaces the power of the flesh with the power of the Spirit, and our weak power with the strong power of God. Then we can soar.

Second, we can soar through an emptying. Emptying is to leave. To learn how to soar, an eagle must first leave its nest. When the eagle puts the nest away and leaves the nest, it will reach a new level. Prof. Yoo Young-man, says, “The tree can produce new sprout by throwing away its falling leaves. The river can reach the sea when it throws itself away. We can welcome today when we give up yesterday and move forward to tomorrow when we give up today.” The mother eagle makes the eaglets leave the nest in order to teach them how to soar. The mother eagle drops the eaglets from the nest that is on high (Dt 32:11). When the eaglets do not know how to fly and plunge into the ground, the mother eagle spreads her wings, carries the young, and goes up the sky. And she drops them again. Through this process, the eaglets learn to spread their two wings and soar.

Emptying is to lighten your body. Heavy birds cannot fly high. Birds can fly high because they empty themselves, even to their bones. To soar like an eagle, you must take away the sin that is easily entangling you. We must abandon greed, vengeance, hatred, and selfishness. If you want to soar, please forgive those who need forgiveness. When you put down your vengeance and forgive, you will soar high. You also need to pray and praise in order to soar. Spiritual soaring means reaching God's throne. Mrs. Cowman says, "We need the two wings of the soul, wings of prayer and praise, to reach God's throne." God called us to live like an eagle. May you live a soaring life while looking upon God day by day.
