[목회서신] 유연함을 추구하는 영성 | The Spirituality of Pursuing Flexibility (2020.8.23)

변화의 시대에 중요한 것은 유연함입니다. 우리는 지금 대 변화의 위기 앞에 서 있습니다. 오래된 규칙이 무너졌습니다. 또한 미래는 예측할 수 없는 상황입니다. 무슨 일이 전개될지 모르는 혼돈 과 불안이 우리 현실입니다. 《사피엔스》라는 책으로 우리에게 알려진 유발 하라리는 “오래된 규칙은 산산조각 나고 새로운 규칙은 아직 쓰이지 않았다”라고 말합니다. 코로나 19 때문에 정부가 모든 것을 통제하기 시작했습니다. 경제활동이 제한을 받고 있습니다. 교회당에 모여 예배할 수 없는 상황입니다. 사람들을 만나도 악수를 하면 안 됩니다. 어디를 가든지 마스크를 써야 합니다. 이런 변화의 소용돌이 속에서 살아남기 위해서는 유연해야 합니다.

유연함은 부드러움 입니다. 경직되어 있지 않은 것이 유연함입니다. 유연함이란 고집스럽지 않은 것입니다. 완고하지 않은 것입니다. 유연함이란 다르게 생각할 줄 아는 것입니다. 다른 사람의 생각을 경청할 줄 아는 것입니다. 또한 다양하게 생각할 줄 아는 것입니다.

유연함은 적응력입니다. 변화의 시기에는 적응을 잘해야 합니다. 적응을 잘하는 것이 왜 중요할까요? 적응을 잘해야 살아남을 수 있기 때문입니다. 살아남아야 새 미래를 맞이할 수 있기 때문입니다. 성경에는 “남은 자” 사상이 있습니다(롬 9:27, 11:5). 남은 자란 하나님이 남겨 놓은 자입니다. 특별한 목적을 위해, 새 미래를 위해 남겨 놓은 자입니다. 남은 자들의 특징은 한결같이 유연합니다. 환경에 잘 적응할 줄 압니다. 남은 자들은 어떤 환경에도 자족할 줄 알았습니다. 비천에 처할 줄도 알았고, 풍부에 처할 줄도 알았습니다(빌 4:11-12).

유연하다는 것은 변화를 당연하게 여기는 것을 의미합니다. 자연의 사계절처럼, 변화는 늘 우리 곁에 있습니다. 유연하다는 것은 인생에 찾아오는 고난을 잘 수용하는 것을 의미합니다. 어떤 일이 일어났을 때 “어떻게 세상에 이런 일이 일어날 수 있지?”라고 생각하는 태도는 유연한 자세가 아닙니다. 유연한 자세는 어떤 일이 일어났을 때 “그럴 수도 있지”라고 생각하는 마음가짐입니다. “그런 일은 내게만이 아니라 누구에게든지 일어날 수 있는 일이야”라고 생각하게 되면 직면한 사건에 잘 대처할 수 있게 됩니다.

유연하다는 것은 곡선으로 살아가는 것을 의미합니다. 직선으로 가는 길은 속도가 빠릅니다. 속도가 빠르다 보면 과속하게 됩니다. 질주하게 됩니다. 브레이크를 잘 사용하지 않게 됩니다. 그 결과 빠르지만 잘못하면 파멸에 이르게 됩니다. 제가 직선이나 속도를 무시하는 것이 아닙니다. 과속의 위험을 말씀드리는 것입니다. 반면에 곡선으로 가는 길은 조금 속도가 느립니다. 길을 가다가 막히면 우회를 하게 됩니다. 필요하면 조금 물러났다가 다시 길을 떠나기도 합니다. 곡선으로 가는 길이 느려 보이지만 곡선으로 가는 길이 안전합니다. 가장 중요한 것은 중요한 목표를 향해 서서히 꾸준히 정진하는 것입니다. 조금 느려 보이지만 기본에 충실해야 합니다. 거듭 기본을 다지며, 꾸준히 내공을 쌓게 되면 어느 날 임계점에 이르게 됩니다.

무엇이든 너무 서두르거나 조급한 것은 좋지 않습니다. 대체로 서두르는 사람들이 사기(詐欺)를 잘 당합니다. 잘 속습니다. 서두르게 만드는 사람을 조심하십시오. 서두르게 만드는 사람은 위험한 사람입니다. 서두르게 돈을 투자하라고 하는 사람들을 조심하십시오. 그런 사람은 본 의도를 감추고 서두르게 만들어서 다른 사람을 위험에 빠뜨립니다. 땀 흘리지 않고 돈을 빨리 벌려고 하는 것은 성경적이지 않습니다. 제가 건전한 투자를 막는 것이 아닙니다. 투기(投機)를 막는 것입니다. 무엇이든 신중해야 합니다. 하나님의 마음은 농부의 마음입니다(요 15:1). 농부는 씨앗을 심기 위해 땅을 기경하고, 기경한 후에 씨앗을 뿌립니다. 씨앗을 뿌린 후에 씨앗이 자라기를 기다립니다. 뜨거운 여름 동안에 인내합니다. 곡식이 무르익고, 과일이 무르익는 가을까지 기다립니다.

유연하다는 것은 힘들 때도 고요한 미소를 지을 줄 아는 것을 의미합니다. 곡선으로 살아간다는 것은 미소 짓는 것을 의미합니다. 환경을 초월한 주님의 기쁨으로 살아가는 것을 의미합니다. 하나님이 모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루실 것을 믿고 살아가는 것을 의미합니다(롬 8:28). 살포시 미소를 지으면 눈과 입술이 곡선이 됩니다. 그때 마음이 부드러워집니다. 생각이 유연해집니다. 몸도 유연해 집니다. 사람들과의 관계도 유연해집니다. 가장 오래 가는 것은 유연한 것입니다.

유연함의 영성은 예수님의 영성입니다. 성육신은 유연함 그 자체입니다. 하나님의 아들이신 예수님이 인간의 몸을 입고 구유에 태어나셨습니다. 아름다운 천국에 사시던 분이 초라한 구유에 적응하신 것입니다. 예수님은 소박하고 가난하게 사셨습니다. 우리 죄를 대신해서 십자가를 지셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가를 지시고 십자가에 적응하실 만큼 겸손하셨습니다. 온유하셨습니다. 유연하셨습니다. 예수님은 자기를 십자가에 못 박은 사람들을 용서하셨습니다. 유연함의 절정은 용서에 있습니다. 유연함의 영성을 추구함으로 예수님을 닮아가도록 합시다.

The Spirituality of Pursuing Flexibility

Flexibility is important in an age of change. We are standing before the crisis of great change. The old rules are broken. Also, the future is unpredictable. Confusion and anxiety of not knowing what will happen is our reality. Yuval Harari, who is known to us as the author of the book called “Sapiens”, says, "The old rules are shattered and the new rules are not yet used." Because of COVID-19, the government is starting to control everything. Economic activity is restricted. It is not possible to gather in the church and worship together. Even if we meet people, we cannot not shake hands. Wherever we go, we must wear a mask. To survive in this vortex of change, we need to be flexible.

Flexibility is softness. Flexibility is not being rigid. Flexibility is not being stubborn. It is not being obstinate. Flexibility is knowing how to think differently. It is knowing how to listen to other people's thoughts. It is also knowing how to think in various ways.

Flexibility is adaptability. We must adapt well in times of change. Why is it important to adapt well? This is because we need to adapt well to survive. This is because we can face a new future only if we survive. In the Bible, there is an idea of ​​ “the remnant” (Romans 9:27, 11:5). Remnants are those left behind by God. They are reserved for a special purpose and for a new future. The characteristic of the remnant is being consistently flexible. They know how to adapt well to the environment. The remnants knew how to be content in any environment. They knew how to be poor, and how to be in abundance (Philippians 4:11-12).

Being flexible means considering changes natural. Like the four seasons of nature, change is always with us. Being flexible means accepting the hardships that come with life. When something happens, the attitude of thinking, "How can this happen to the world?" is not a flexible attitude. A flexible attitude is the attitude of thinking, “It can be” when something happens. If you think, “It can happen to anyone, not just me,” you will be able to cope well with the events you face.

Being flexible means living with a curve. The straight road is fast. If you go fast, you will be speeding. You will run at a high speed. You will not use the brakes well. The result is fast, but if you do it wrong, it can lead to ruin. I'm not ignoring straight lines or speed. I'm talking about the dangers of speeding. On the other hand, the speed of going on a curved road is a little slower. If you get stuck on the road, you will have a detour. If necessary, you will have to take a step back and then get back on the road. The curving road looks slow, but the curving road is safe. The most important thing is to work slowly and steadily toward your important goals. It seems a little slow, but you have to stick to the basics. If you strengthen the basics over and over again and steadily build up your inner strengths, one day you will reach a tipping point.

It is not good to be too hasty or impatient for anything. Those who are in a hurry are generally scammed. They are well deceived. Watch out for those who makes you hasty. Anyone who makes you hasty is a dangerous person. Watch out for those who tell you to invest money in a hurry. Such a person puts others in danger by hiding their intentions and making them rush. It is not biblical to try to make money quickly without sweating. I am not against a healthy investment. I am trying to stop speculation. We must be prudent about everything. God's heart is of the farmer's heart (John 15:1). The farmer prunes the soil to plant the seeds, and after that he sows the seeds. After sowing the seeds, he waits for the seeds to grow. He is patient during the hot summer. He waits until autumn when the grain and the fruit are ripened.

Being flexible means knowing how to smile quietly even when it's difficult. Living on a curved street means smiling. It means to live with the joy of the Lord, which transcends your environment. It means living as you believe that God will work together for the good (Romans 8:28). If you smile gently, your eyes and lips become curved. Then your heart softens. Your thoughts become flexible. The body also becomes flexible. Your relationships with people also become flexible. Those who are flexible last the longest.

The spirituality of flexibility is the spirituality of Jesus. Incarnation is flexibility itself. Jesus, the Son of God, was born in a manger in a human body. Someone who had lived in a beautiful heaven adapted to a shabby manger. Jesus lived simply and poorly. He took the cross for our sins. Jesus was humble enough to carry the cross and adapt to it. He was gentle. He was flexible. Jesus forgave those who crucified him. The pinnacle of flexibility lies in forgiveness. Let's become like Jesus by pursuing the spirituality of flexibility.
