[목회서신] 용기(勇氣)가 용기를 낳습니다! | Courage Produces Courage! (2020.9.20)

지금 우리에게 필요한 것은 용기(勇氣)입니다. 용기란 씩씩하고 굳센 기운입니다. 어떤 상황에서도 겁내지 않는 기개를 의미합니다. 코로나19가 찾아오면서 사람들의 두려움이 심화되었습니다. 그런 까닭에 우리에게 더욱 용기가 필요합니다. 살아간다는 것은 아름답지만 힘든 것입니다. 어려운 때, 살아낸다는 것도 힘든 것입니다. 어떤 사람들만 힘든 것이 아니라 모두가 힘든 것입니다. 그래서 우리에게 용기가 필요합니다. 폴 투르니에의 말을 들어보십시오.

“삶은 아름답지만 그것은 모든 인간에게 힘든 것이며, 심지어 대다수에게는 혹독하기까지 하다. 시련을 당하거나 상실에 직면하면 더욱 힘들어진다. 삶은 많은 용기를 요구한다.” (폴 투르니에, 『고통보다 깊은』, IVP, 172쪽)

우리 안에 두려움과 용기가 함께 살아가는 것을 봅니다. 중요한 것은 두려움을 극복하고 용기 있게 살아가는 법을 배우는 것입니다. 윈스턴 처칠은 “돈을 잃는 것은 적게 잃은 것이다. 명예를 잃는 것은 크게 잃은 것이다. 용기를 잃는 것은 전부를 잃은 것이다.”라고 말했습니다. 그는 용기 있는 지도자였습니다. 그는 용기를 아주 중요한 지도자의 덕목으로 여겼습니다. 지금 우리에게 필요한 용기는 변화에 직면하는 용기입니다. 변화에 직면하고 변화를 수용한다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다.

제가 어느 날 강단에서 성경을 읽는데 이전에 또렷하게 보이던 글자가 희미하게 보였습니다. 노안(老眼)이 시작된 것입니다. 겉으로는 침착하게 대처했지만 그 사실을 받아들이기가 힘들었습니다. 나이가 들어, 도수(度數)가 들어 있는 안경을 새로 맞추어야 한다는 사실을 받아들이기가 힘들었습니다. 그 당시 제게 필요했던 것은 나이가 들어간다는 사실을 인정하는 용기였습니다. 그때가 40대 중반이었으니까 지금은 그때에 비교하면 더 나이가 많이 들었습니다.

나이가 들어간다는 것은 서글프게 느껴지는 일입니다. 김광석씨가 부른 노래 중에 《서른 즈음에》라는 노래가 있습니다. L.A.남성선교합창단이 이 노래를 연주한 적이 있습니다. 제게 선물해 준 음반을 통해 이 노래를 접하게 되었습니다. 사실 이 노래가 찬양곡들과 함께 섞여 있었기 때문에 김광석씨의 노래인 줄 모르고 듣곤 했습니다. 나중에야 그분의 노래인 줄 알게 되었습니다. 중요한 사실은 이 노래를 들을 때마다 왠지 모르게 마음이 쓸쓸해지는 경험을 한 것입니다. 이 노래는 머물러 있는 청춘인 줄 알았는데, 점점 더 멀어져 가는 청춘을 아쉬워하며 부른 노래입니다. 또한 이별의 아픔을 노래한 것입니다.

점점 더 멀어져 간다/머물러 있는 청춘인 줄 알았는데/비어가는 내 가슴속엔/더 아무것도 찾을 수 없네/ ... 계절은 다시 돌아오지만/떠나간 내 사람은 어디에/내가 떠나보낸 것도 아닌데/내가 떠나온 것도 아닌데/조금씩 잊혀져 간다/머물러 있는 사랑인 줄 알았는데/또 하루 멀어져 간다/매일 이별하며 살고 있구나.(김광석,《서른 즈음에》, 일부)

우리가 떠나보낸 것도 아닌데 청춘이 어느 날 우리 곁을 떠나버렸습니다. 어른들의 마음이 청춘처럼 느껴진다고 청춘은 아닙니다. 정말 어른이 되려면 나이가 들었다는 사실을 인정해야 합니다. 나이가 들어간다는 사실을 인정하는 것처럼 코로나19가 가져온 변화를 인정해야 합니다. 변화를 인정해야 변화에 잘 대처하고, 변화를 선용할 수 있습니다.

용기란 대단한 것이 아닙니다. 용기란 변화의 때에 자신이 할 수 있는 작은 일을 행하는 것입니다. 룻이 나오미와 함께 베들레헴에 왔을 때 그녀가 한 일은 이삭줍기였습니다. 이삭줍기는 그녀가 할 수 있는 작은 일이었습니다. 하나님은 그 작은 일을 선용하심으로 그녀와 나오미의 생애를 역전시켜주셨습니다. 우리 문제는 자신이 해야 할 아주 간단한 일을 행하지 않는 데 있습니다. 용기란 자신이 해야 할 아주 간단한 일을 행하는 것입니다.

용기는 용기를 낳습니다. 용기는 전염됩니다. 고통스러운 고난 중에도 용기 있게 살아가는 사람을 만날 때 우리는 용기를 얻습니다. 십자가는 용기의 원천입니다. 예수님은 용기 있게 고난의 십자가를 직면하셨습니다. 예수님의 용기는 겟네마네 기도 후에 더욱 강해졌습니다. 기도하면 용기를 얻게 됩니다. 기도하면 성령님의 강력한 능력이 함께 함으로 용기를 얻게 됩니다. 예수님의 용기가 우리를 구원했습니다. 힘들 때마다 예수님의 십자가를 묵상하십시오. 예수님을 바라보십시오. 그때 성령님께서 우리 내면에 용기를 심어 주실 것입니다.

Courage Produces Courage!

What we need right now is courage. Courage is a firm and strong energy. It’s having the spirit of not being afraid under any circumstances. With COVID-19, people's fears intensified. That is why we need more courage. Living is a beautiful thing to do, but also difficult. It is also hard to survive in difficult times. Not only are some people having difficulties, but everyone is. So we need courage. Listen to what Paul Tournier said below.

“Life is beautiful, but it is difficult for all mankind, and even harsh for many. It gets even harder when there are trials or losses. Life requires a lot of courage.” (Paul Tournier,『Creative Suffering』, IVP, p.172, trans.)

We can see both fear and courage present within us. The important thing is to learn how to overcome our fears and live courageously. Winston Churchill said, “It is a small loss if you lose money. It is a great loss if you lose fame (would honor be better here?). And if you lose courage you have lost everything.” He was a courageous leader. He viewed courage as a very important virtue for a leader to have. The courage we need right now is the courage to face change. Facing and accepting change is not an easy task.

One day when I was reading the Bible from the pulpit, the letters that had been previously clearly visible were faint. Presbyopia began. I was calm on the outside, but it was hard to accept that fact. As I got older, it was harder to accept the fact that I had to put on new glasses with a new prescription. What I needed at that time was the courage to admit that I was getting older. I was in my mid-forties at that time, so I’m much older than that now.

Getting older makes us feel sad. There is a song called 《Around Thirty 》among the songs of Kim Kwang-Seok, a Korean singer. The L.A. Men's Mission Choir once performed this song. I came into contact with this song through an album that was given to me as a gift. In fact, because this song was mixed with songs of praise, I didn't know that it was Kim Kwang-Seok's song when I first listened to it. It was only later that I found out that it was his song. The important fact is that every time I listened to this song, I felt lonely for some reason. This song is about the artist lamenting for the youth that is leaving and growing distant, which was once lingering when he was still youthful. Also, this song is about the pain of separation.

It wasn't that we had left but youth left us, one day. Adults are not in their youth although they feel youthful in their hearts. To really be an adult, you have to admit that you are old. Just as we admit that we are getting older, we must acknowledge the changes that COVID-19 has brought. When you acknowledge change, you can cope well with change and make good use of it.

Courage is not something great. Courage is doing the little things you can do in times of change. When Ruth came to Bethlehem with Naomi, she gleaned. Gleaning was a small thing she could do. God reversed the lives of her and Naomi by using that small act for good. Our problem is the act of not doing the very simple things we should do. Courage is doing the very simple things we need to do.

Courage produces courage. Courage is contagious. We find courage when we meet someone who lives courageously even in the midst of suffering. The cross is the source of courage. Jesus courageously faced the cross of suffering. Jesus' courage grew stronger after the Gethsemane prayer. Prayer gives us courage. When we pray, we are encouraged by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus' courage saved us. Whenever it is hard, meditate on the cross of Jesus. Look upon Jesus. In that moment, the Holy Spirit will instill courage within us.
