[목회서신] 가장 어두운 골짜기가 가장 밝은 지혜를 낳습니다. | The Darkest Valleys Produce the Brightest Wisdom

   골짜기는 어둡습니다. 깊은 골짜기일수록 어둡습니다. 그런데 바로 그 가장 어둡고 깊은 골짜기에서 가장 밝고 깊은 지혜가 탄생합니다. 사람은 태어나서 산 정상을 정복하기 위해 길을 떠납니다. 정상은 높고 아름답습니다. 그래서 사람들은 정상을 정복하길 원합니다. 우리는 그 정상을 ‘성공’이라고 부릅니다. 어떤 사람은 정상을 섬김의 수단으로 삼습니다. 그래서 그 사람에게 정상은 섬김을 의미합니다. 정상을 섬김의 기회로 삼는 생애는 정말 아름답습니다. 사람은 섬길 때 깊은 기쁨을 경험합니다. 깊은 보람을 느낍니다.

정상에 오르는 길은 험난합니다. 정상에 오르는 길은 숨이 찹니다. 때로는 정상에 오르기 위해 위험한 사다리를 사용할 때도 있고, 밧줄을 이용할 때도 있습니다. 정상에 오르는 과정이 어렵기 때문에 정상을 정복한 사람은 많지 않습니다. 에베레스트산과 같은 높은 정상은 매우 위험합니다. 혹독하게 춥고, 산소가 희박합니다. 그래서 오래 머물 수가 없습니다. 정상은 머물기 위해 오르는 것이 아니라, 내려와 섬기기 위해 오르는 것입니다.

모든 사람이 정상을 정복할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 사람은 언덕에 머물기도 합니다. 대부분은 낮은 언덕에 만족하며 살아갑니다. 하지만 우리가 피할 수 없는 곳이 있습니다. 그곳은 어두운 골짜기입니다. 다윗은 사망의 음침한 골짜기를 통과했다고 고백합니다(시 23:4). 그가 말한 사망의 음침한 골짜기는 어둠의 골짜기를 의미합니다. 누구나 피하고 싶은 곳이 바로 어둠의 골짜기입니다. 하지만 인생은 늘 양면이 함께 존재합니다. 높은 산에는 깊은 골짜기가 함께 합니다. 인생에는 어두움과 빛이 함께 존재합니다. 슬픔과 기쁨이 함께 존재합니다.

우리가 경험하는 어두운 골짜기는 우리가 좋아하는 골짜기가 아닙니다. 그 이유는 어두운 골짜기는 고난의 골짜기, 고통의 골짜기, 상실의 골짜기, 질병의 골짜기, 그리고 눈물의 골짜기를 의미하기 때문입니다. 저는 고난 예찬론자가 결코 아닙니다. 저도 할 수만 있으면 고난을 피하고 싶은 사람입니다. 하지만 고난은 우리가 원한다고 피할 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 고난은 생각지 못한 때에 우리를 찾아와 당황하게 만듭니다. 하지만 피할 수 없는 고난이라면 침착한 마음으로 맞이해야 합니다. 그 이유는 고난 속에는 감춰진 복이 담겨 있기 때문입니다. 고난의 골짜기 속에는 우리가 이전에 알지 못했던 깊은 은혜와 놀라운 축복이 담겨 있습니다.

첫째, 가장 어두운 골짜기에서 가장 밝은 지혜를 경험하게 됩니다. 벤저민 프랭클린은 “고통은 교훈을 낳는다.”라고 말했습니다. 어두운 골짜기에 신비로운 빛이 임합니다. 그것은 깨달음의 빛, 지혜의 빛입니다. 어두운 골짜기를 잘 통과한 사람은 지혜롭습니다. 보통 사람은 알지 못하는 깊은 깨달음을 소유하게 됩니다. 어두운 골짜기를 통과한 사람은 깊이가 있습니다. 무게가 있습니다. 남이 보지 못하는 것을 보는 통찰력이 있습니다. 얄팍한 꾀가 아니라 문제의 본질을 간파하는 지혜를 얻게 됩니다.

신비롭게도 밝은 지혜가 자라는 곳은 바로 어두운 골짜기입니다. 왜냐하면 어두운 골짜기에서 우리는 자신을 성찰하게 되기 때문입니다. 고난을 통해 하나님께 회개하는 과정을 거치며 영혼이 정화됩니다. 고통을 통해 다른 사람의 고통을 공감할 수 있는 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. 타인의 눈물과 그들의 언어를 이해하게 됩니다. 그래서 타인의 눈물을 닦아주는 위로자가 됩니다. 불필요한 집착을 내려놓고 진정으로 중요한 것을 붙잡을 줄 알게 됩니다. 자신의 힘이 아닌 하나님만 의지하는 사람이 됩니다.

둘째, 가장 어두운 골짜기에서 하나님의 임재를 경험하게 됩니다. 다윗은 어두운 골짜기를 지날 때 강력한 하나님의 임재를 경험했습니다. “내가 사망의 음침한 골짜기로 다닐지라도 해를 두려워하지 않을 것은 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라”(시 23:4상). 하나님의 임재를 경험하는 것이 축복입니다. 하나님을 소유한 사람은 모든 것을 소유한 사람입니다. 세상의 모든 것을 가졌다 할지라도 하나님을 모신 사람이 아니라면 그는 가장 가난한 사람입니다. 다윗은 사망의 골짜기에서 하나님의 위로와 도우심을 경험했습니다.

다윗은 어두운 골짜기를 통과한 후에, 원수 앞에서 하나님께서 상을 차려 주시는 은혜를 경험했습니다. 은혜와 축복의 잔이 차고 넘치는 것을 체험했습니다. “내 잔이 넘치나이다”(시 23:5하).

요셉도 어두운 구덩이에서, 억울하게 갇힌 감옥에서 하나님의 풍성한 은혜를 경험했습니다.

셋째, 가장 어두운 골짜기에서 은혜의 샘이 솟아나는 것을 경험하게 됩니다. 다윗은 골짜기에서 샘이 솟아나게 하시는 하나님을 찬양합니다. “여호와께서 샘을 골짜기에서 솟아나게 하시고 산 사이에 흐르게 하사”(시 104:10). “그들이 눈물 골짜기로 지나갈 때에 그 곳에 많은 샘이 있을 것이며 이른 비가 복을 채워 주시나이다”(시 84:6). 놀라운 고백입니다. 눈물 골짜기를 지날 때, 그는 샘에서 솟아나는 생수를 경험했습니다. 하나님이 예비하신 이른 비의 축복을 경험했습니다. 높은 정상에서 경험할 수 없는 은혜의 샘을, 어두운 골짜기에서 경험했습니다. 하나님은 눈물의 골짜기를 은혜의 골짜기로 바꾸어 주십니다. 고난의 골짜기를 축복의 골짜기로 변화시켜 주십니다.

어두운 골짜기는 마치 터널과 같습니다. 터널에는 반드시 끝이 있습니다. 그 끝에는 밝은 빛이 기다립니다. 그러므로 어두운 골짜기에서 기도하십시오. 찬양하십시오. 힘이 들지만 감사하십시오. 그때 어두운 골짜기가 숨겨둔 밝은 지혜와 하나님의 임재를 경험하게 될 것입니다. 은혜의 샘을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 하나님의 위로와 풍성한 은혜가 어두운 골짜기를 통과하는 모든 분들과 함께 하시길 빕니다.

The Darkest Valleys Produce the Brightest Wisdom

  Valleys are dark. The deeper the valley, the darker it becomes. And yet, it is in those very darkest and deepest valleys that the brightest and deepest wisdom is born. From the moment of birth, people set out to conquer mountain peaks. The summit is high and beautiful, and so people long to reach it. We call such a summit “success.” For some, the summit becomes a means of service, and to them, the peak represents an opportunity to serve. Such a life is truly beautiful, for in serving others we experience the deepest joy and satisfaction.

The path to the summit is rugged and exhausting. Sometimes one must climb dangerous ladders or rely on ropes to ascend. Because the journey is so difficult, few actually conquer the highest peaks. Mountains like Everest are perilous—bitterly cold, with thin air where life cannot linger long. One does not climb to the summit to dwell there, but to descend again and serve others.

Not everyone will reach the summit. Some remain content on smaller hills. But there is a place none of us can avoid: the dark valley. David testified that he walked through the valley of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4). The valley of the shadow of death is the valley of darkness. It is the very place we all wish to avoid. Yet life is always composed of both sides—where there are high mountains, there are also deep valleys. Life holds both darkness and light, sorrow and joy.

The dark valleys we encounter are never ones we desire. They are valleys of suffering, valleys of pain, valleys of loss, valleys of sickness, and valleys of tears. I am no lover of suffering. If possible, I too would avoid it. But suffering cannot be evaded simply because we wish it away. It often comes unexpectedly, leaving us perplexed. And yet, if suffering cannot be avoided, it must be met with a calm spirit—for hidden within suffering are blessings. In the valley of suffering are deep graces and surprising blessings unknown to us before.

First, in the darkest valleys we gain the brightest wisdom. Benjamin Franklin once wrote, “Pain instructs.” In the valley of darkness, a mysterious light appears—the light of understanding, the light of wisdom. Those who pass through dark valleys emerge wiser. They carry profound insight unknown to ordinary experience. Such people possess depth, weight, and vision to see what others cannot. Theirwisdom penetrates the very heart of problems, not with shallow cunning, but with genuine discernment.

It is a mystery that wisdom grows brightest in the darkest valleys. For it is in the valley that we are led to self-examination. Suffering leads us to repentance, and our souls are refined. Pain grants us the wisdom to empathize with others’ pain, to understand their tears and their language. Thus, we become comforters who wipe away the tears of others. We learn to release unnecessary attachments and cling only to what truly matters. We learn to depend not on our own strength, but on God alone.

Second, in the darkest valleys we encounter God’s presence. David experienced the powerful presence of God in the valley: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4a). To experience God’s presence is the greatest blessing. The one who possesses God possesses all things. The one who has all things but does not have God is the poorest of all. In the valley of death, David encountered God’s comfort and help.

After passing through the valley, David experienced God preparing a table before him in the presence of his enemies. He knew the overflowing cup of grace and blessing: “My cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5b). Joseph, too, experienced abundant grace in the dark pit and in the unjust prison.

Third, in the darkest valleys we discover fountains of grace. David praised God who causes springs to flow in the valleys: “He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains” (Psalm 104:10). The psalmist also confessed, “As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools” (Psalm 84:6). This is astounding. In the valley of tears, he found living water springing up. He tasted the blessing of the early rains God had prepared. In the dark valley, he encountered fountains of grace that could never be experienced on lofty peaks. God turns valleys of tears into valleys of grace, valleys of suffering into valleys of blessing.

Dark valleys are like tunnels. Every tunnel has an end, and at the end, light awaits. Therefore, pray in the valley. Sing in the valley. Give thanks, even when weary. Then you will encounter the bright wisdom, the abiding presence of God, and the fountains of grace hidden within the valley. May God’s comfort and abundant grace be with all who now walk through their own dark valleys.
