[목회서신] 거듭 다시 시작하게 하시는 은혜 | The Grace That Lets Us Begin Again

     새생명비전교회가 창립 16주년을 맞이했습니다. 지금으로부터 16년 전, 8년 동안 성심을 다해 섬기던 교회를 떠날 때 제 손은 빈손이었습니다. 이민 목회의 쓴맛을 경험한 순간이었습니다. 저는 실패의 골짜기, 눈물의 골짜기로 떨어졌습니다. 그 골짜기는 생각보다 깊었고, 충격도 컸습니다. 그러나 그 깊은 골짜기에서 저는 은혜의 샘을 만났습니다. “그들이 눈물 골짜기로 지나갈 때에 그 곳에 많은 샘이 있을 것이며 이른 비가 복을 채워 주나이다”(시 84:6). “여호와께서 샘을 골짜기에서 솟아나게 하시고 산 사이에 흐르게 하사”(시 104:10). 하나님의 은혜와 저를 사랑해 주시는 분들의 도움으로, 그 깊은 골짜기에서 새생명비전교회가 태어났습니다. 그때 경험한 하나님의 은혜가 바로 “거듭 다시 시작하게 하시는 은혜”입니다.

넘어지는 것이 문제가 아니라 다시 일어서지 않는 것이 문제입니다. 실패가 문제가 아니라 다시 시작하지 않는 것이 문제입니다. 인생 여정에서 우리는 자주 넘어지고 실패하는 경험을 합니다. 그러나 하나님은 거듭 우리를 일으켜 세워 주십니다. 오뚝이처럼 다시 일어서게 하십니다. 성경은 말씀합니다. “대저 의인은 일곱 번 넘어질지라도 다시 일어나려니와”(잠 24:16상). 고난은 누구에게나 예고없이 찾아옵니다. 의인에게도 고난은 찾아옵니다. 오히려 성경은 의인에게 고난이 더 많다고 말씀합니다. 그러나 하나님은 모든 고난에서 의인을 건져주십니다. “의인은 고난이 많으나 여호와께서 그의 모든 고난에서 건지시는도다”(시 34:19). 하나님이 예비하신 거듭 다시 시작하게 하시는 은혜에는 몇 가지 특징이 있습니다.

첫째, 겸손케 하신 후에 더욱 큰 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 은혜입니다. 하나님이 가장 싫어하시는 것이 교만이며, 가장 기뻐하시는 것이 겸손입니다. 우리는 고난과 역경, 시련과 실패를 통해 겸손을 배우게 됩니다. 겸손은 자신을 낮추는 것입니다. 하나님의 은혜는 높은 곳이 아니라 낮은 곳으로 흐릅니다. 하나님의 큰 은혜는 겸손한 성품 위에 임합니다. “그러나 더욱 큰 은혜를 주시나니 그러므로 일렀으되 하나님이 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 주신다 하였느니라”(약 4:6). 하나님은 40년 광야 생활을 통해 이스라엘 백성을 낮추셨고, 마침내 복을 주십니다. “네 조상들도 알지 못하던 만나를 광야에서 네게 먹이셨나니 이는 다 너를 낮추시며 너를 시험하사 마침내 네게

복을 주려 하심이었느니라”(신 8:16).

둘째, 상실한 것을 다시 회복시켜 주시는 은혜입니다. 상실의 고통은 매우 깊은 고통입니다. 가장 소중히 여기던 것을 상실할 때 슬픔이 밀물처럼 밀려옵니다. 상실은 아픈 일이지만 상실을 통해 우리는 귀한 깨달음을 얻게 됩니다. 깨어짐 속에서 깨달음이 태어납니다. 상실을 통해 이전에 누리던 은혜와 축복이 얼마나 소중했는지를 깊이 깨닫습니다. 상실을 통해 우리가 소유했던 것이 얼마나 소중한지를 깨닫습니다. 몸이 아프면 건강의 소중함을 깨닫고, 사랑하는 사람이 떠나면 그 빈자리가 얼마나 컸는지 절실히 느끼게 됩니다.

하나님의 은혜가 함께 할 때 우리는 상실한 것을 회복하게 됩니다. 욥은 고난의 끝자락에 상실했던 것보다 갑절의 복을 받았습니다. “여호와께서 욥의 곤경을 돌이키시고 여호와께서 욥에게 이전 모든 소유보다 갑절이나 주신지라... 여호와께서 욥의 말년에 욥에게 처음보다 더 복을 주시니”(욥 42:10,12). 욥의 말년에 누렸던 그의 기쁨을 상상해 보십시오. 사람은 소중한 것을 잃기 전까지는 그것에 대해 감사할 줄 모를 때가 많습니다. 안타깝게도 잃었던 것을 다시 회복할 때에야 비로소 크게 기뻐하며 감사하게 됩니다.

건강을 잃었다가 회복할 때, 직장을 잃었다가 다시 취업할 때, 실연의 아픔 뒤에 새로운 사랑을 시작할 때 우리는 큰 기쁨을 경험합니다. 이스라엘 백성이 포로 생활에서 돌아올 때 그들의 기쁨은 충만했습니다. 그것은 회복의 기쁨이었습니다. “여호와께서 시온의 포로를 돌려 보내실 때에 우리는 꿈꾸는 것 같았도다 그 때에 우리 입에는 웃음이 가득하고 우리 혀에는 찬양이 찼었도다”(시 126:1-2상). 예수님이 십자가에서 돌아가셨을 때 제자들과 여인들은 깊은 슬픔 속에서 며칠을 보냈습니다. 그러나 주님은 사흘 만에 부활하셨고, 제자들이 부활하신 주님을 다시 만났을 때 말로 다할 수 없는 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다. “이 말씀을 하시고 손과 옆구리를 보이시니 제자들이 주를 보고 기뻐하더라”(요 20:20).

셋째, 상실한 것보다 더 좋은 것으로 다시 시작하게 하시는 은혜입니다. 요한복음 2장에는 가나 혼인잔치의 기적이 기록되어 있습니다. 기쁨으로 가득해야 할 혼인잔치에서 포도주가 떨어졌습니다. 혼인잔치에서 포도주가 떨어진 것은 큰 수치였습니다. 왜냐하면 포도주는 잔치의 기쁨과 즐거움을 상징하기 때문입니다. 그러나 예수님께서 물로 포도주를 만들어 주셨을 때, 잔치는 이전보다 더 큰 기쁨으로 채워졌습니다. 예수님이 만드신 포도주는 양적으로도 풍성했고, 질적으로도 최상이었습니다. 연회장은 포도주를 맛본 후 신랑을 불러 이렇게 극찬했습니다. “그대는 지금까지 좋은 포도주를 두었도다”(요 2:10).

하나님이 우리 교회에 베풀어 주신 은혜는 바로 상실한 것보다 더 좋은 것으로 다시 시작하게 하시는 은혜입니다. 실패와 질병과 시련 중에 있는 분들에게 권면합니다. 끝나기 전까지 끝난 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 쉼표를 찍은 자리에 마침표를 찍지 마십시오. 거듭 다시 시작하게 하시는 하나님의 은혜를 구하십시오. 상실한 것보다 더 좋은 것으로 회복시켜 주시는 은혜를 사모하십시오. 거듭 넘어질 때마다 거듭 다시 일어서십시오. 하나님이 이전보다 더 큰 은혜와 더 큰 능력을 부어 주실 것입니다. 지난 16년 동안 새생명비전교회를 지켜 주시고 축복해 주신 하나님께 모든 영광을 돌립니다. 아낌없이 헌신하고 수고하신 성도님들에게 깊은 감사를 드립니다.

The Grace That Lets Us Begin Again

   New Life Vision Church has reached its 16th anniversary. Sixteen years ago, when I left the church I had faithfully served for eight years, my hands were empty. It was a moment when I tasted the bitterness of immigrant ministry. I fell into the valley of failure and tears—a valley deeper than I had imagined, and the pain was severe. Yet in that deep valley, I found the spring of grace. “As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools” (Psalm 84:6). “He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains” (Psalm 104:10). By God’s grace and through the help of those who loved me, New Life Vision Church was born out of that deep valley. The grace I experienced then is what I now call “the grace that lets us begin again.”

Falling down is not the problem; refusing to rise again is the problem. Failure itself is not the issue; the issue is not starting over. On our journey through life, we often stumble and fail. Yet God continually lifts us up. He makes us rise again, like a roly-poly that never stays down. Scripture says, “For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again” (Proverbs 24:16a). Trials come to everyone without warning—even to the righteous. In fact, Scripture tells us that the righteous may suffer even more. But God delivers the righteous from all their troubles. “A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all” (Psalm 34:19). The grace God gives to help us begin again has several characteristics.

First, it is the grace that brings greater blessing after humbling us. God despises pride but delights in humility. We learn humility through hardship, adversity, trials, and failure. To be humble is to lower oneself. God’s grace does not flow to the heights but to the low places. His greater grace rests on a humble heart. “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble’” (James 4:6). Through forty years in the wilderness, God humbled Israel and finally blessed them. “He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you” (Deuteronomy 8:16).

Second, it is the grace that restores what was lost. The pain of loss is one of the deepest pains in life. When something precious is taken from us, sorrow floods our hearts. Yet through loss, we gain profound understanding. Out of brokenness comes understanding. Loss teaches us the true worth of what we once had—the grace and blessings we took for granted. When illness strikes, we realize the value of health. When a loved one departs, we feel the depth of their absence.

When God’s grace accompanies us, He restores what has been lost. At the end of his trials, Job received twice as much as he had before. “After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before... The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first” (Job 42:10,12). Imagine the joy Job must have felt in his later years. Often, we do not appreciate what we have until it is gone. But when it is restored, our gratitude and joy overflow.

When health is regained, when a job is recovered, when new love begins after heartbreak—we experience deep joy. When the Israelites returned from exile, their joy was full; it was the joy of restoration. “When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy” (Psalm 126:1–2a). When Jesus died on the cross, His disciples and the women who followed Him grieved deeply for days. But on the third day, the Lord rose again, and when they saw the risen Christ, their joy was indescribable. “After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord”

(John 20:20).

Third, it is the grace that lets us begin again with something better than before. In John chapter 2, we read of the miracle at the wedding in Cana. At a wedding, where joy should abound, the wine ran out. It was a moment of great shame, for wine symbolized joy and celebration. But when Jesus turned water into wine, the feast was filled with even greater joy. The wine He made was not only abundant but of the highest quality. After tasting it, the master of the banquet praised the groom: “You have saved the best till now” (John 2:10).

The grace God has poured out on our church is to begin again with something better than before. To those facing failure, illness, or hardship, I offer this encouragement: it is not over until God says it is over. Do not place a period where God has placed only a comma. Seek the grace of God that allows you to begin again. Long for the grace that restores you with something even better than what was lost. Rise again each time you fall, for God will pour out greater grace and greater power than before. All glory to God, who has protected and blessed New Life Vision Church through the past sixteen years. And my heartfelt gratitude to every member who has faithfully served and sacrificed without reservation.
