[목회서신] 거룩한 기대를 갖고 새롭게 시작하십시오. | Start Anew With Holy Expectations

하나님은 새해를 선물로 주셨습니다. 하나님은 새해를 통해 우리를 새롭게 하십니다. 하나님은 새롭게 하시는 하나님이십니다. “좋은 것으로 네 소원을 만족하게 하사 네 청춘을 독수리 같이 새롭게 하시는도다”(시 103:5). “보좌에 앉으신 이가 이르시되 보라 내가 만물을 새롭게 하노라”(계 21:5상). 하나님은 성령님을 보내 주셔서 우리를 늘 새롭게 하십니다. “오직 그의 긍휼하심을 따라 중생의 씻음과 성령의 새롭게 하심으로 하셨나니”(딛 3:5하). 하나님은 새 일을 행하시는 하나님이십니다. “보라 내가 새 일을 행하리니 이제 나타낼 것이라(사 43:19상).

새해를 선물로 주신 하나님은 우리가 거룩한 기대를 갖고 새롭게 시작하길 원하십니다. 믿음이란 거룩한 기대를 품는 것입니다. 믿음은 바라는 것입니다. “믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거니”(히 11:1). 바란다는 것은 거룩한 기대를 품는 것입니다. 믿음이란 과거를 떠나 미래를 향해 전진하는 것입니다. 믿음으로 산다는 것은 뒤로 물러가는 것이 아닙니다. “나의 의인은 믿음으로 말미암아 살리라 또한 뒤로 물러가면 내 마음이 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리라 하셨느니라”(히 10:38). 바울은 뒤에 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 푯대를 향해 달려간다고 말했습니다. “형제들아 나는 아직 내가 잡은 줄로 여기지 아니하고 오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가노라”(빌 3:13-14).

거룩한 기대는 하나님의 이름 속에 담겨 있습니다. 하나님은 “여호와 이레” 하나님이십니다. “여호와 이레”는 “여호와께서 준비하셨다”는 뜻입니다. “이레”라는 단어는 “보다, 살피다, 관찰하다”라는 뜻을 내포하고 있습니다. 하나님은 아브라함을 살피시고 그에게 가장 필요한 것을 준비해 주셨습니다. 가장 좋은 것을 예비해 주셨습니다. 하나님은 늘 좋은 것을 예비하신 후에 우리를 기다리시는 하나님이십니다. 아브라함이 이삭을 바치기 위해 모리아 산에 올라갈 때 하나님은 미리 숫양을 예비하고 기다리셨습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 광야에 들어갈 때 하나님은 불기둥과 구름기둥을 예비하셨습니다. 만나와 메추라기와 반석에서 생수를 예비하셨습니다. 하나님은 우리 각 사람을 감찰하십니다. 그리고 가장 필요한 것, 가장 좋은 것을 예비해 주시는 분입니다.

거룩한 기대는 좋은 만남 속에 담겨 있습니다. 인생은 만남입니다. 좋은 만남을 위해 기도하십시오. 좋은 만남을 기대하십시오. 무엇보다 복된 말씀과의 만남을 기대하십시오. 변화와 성숙을 위한 좋은 배움의 기회와의 만남을 기대하십시오. 인간의 행복은 아름답게 변화하고 성숙하는 데 있습니다. 또한 새로운 만남 속에 담긴 축복을 기대하십시오. 새로운 만남이 새로운 배움을 낳습니다. 새로운 만남이 새로운 깨달음을 선물해 줍니다. 새로운 만남이 새로운 기회를 제공해 줍니다. 새로운 만남이 새로운 역사를 창조합니다. 새로운 만남이 새로운 길을 열어주고 새로운 문을 열어줍니다. 늘 만나는 사람들과 지속적으로 아름다운 우정을 가꾸시는 것은 중요합니다. 하지만 새로운 변화를 원한다면 새로운 만남을 시도해 보십시오. 새로운 만남 뒤에 수많은 새로운 만남이 감추어져 있습니다. 우리를 아름답게 만들어가는 것은 좋은 만남임을 거듭 기억하십시오.

거룩한 기대는 하나님의 섭리 속에 담겨 있습니다. 하나님의 섭리는 하나님의 붙드심입니다. 하나님의 섭리는 모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루시는 능력입니다. 제가 늘 붙잡고 사는 말씀은 로마서 8장 28절의 말씀입니다. “우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라”(롬 8:28). 제 인생 여정에서 여러 가지 사건들을 만났습니다. 고난과 역경과 시련을 만났습니다. 상처를 받기도 했습니다. 험담을 듣기도 했습니다. 그런데 제가 하나님을 의지했을 때 하나님은 모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루어 주셨습니다. 하나님이 합력하여 선을 이루심으로 벼랑 끝에서 비상하게 하셨습니다. 벼랑 끝에서 웃게 하셨습니다. 하나님은 절망을 희망으로, 고난을 축복으로 바꾸어 주셨습니다. 상처를 영광으로 바꾸어 주셨습니다.

하나님은 그를 사랑하는 자가 무슨 일을 만나든지 합력하여 선을 이루시는 놀라운 분입니다. 한 해 동안 무슨 일을 만날지 우리는 모릅니다. 인생은 어렵습니다. 인생은 결코 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 우리가 확실히 아는 것이 있습니다. 그것은 하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 사실입니다. 하나님이 복을 주시고 하나님이 우리를 도와주신다는 사실입니다. 하나님은 인생 역전의 드라마를 쓰시는 분이라는 사실입니다. 우리가 품은 거룩한 기대는 우리 자신이나 환경에 근거한 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 신뢰하는 하나님의 지혜와 능력과 사랑에 근거합니다. 거룩한 기대를 품고 새해를 시작하십시오. 새로운 복과 새로운 만남과 새로운 일을 예비하시는 하나님을 신뢰함으로 새해를 시작하십시오. 새해 복 많이 받으십시오. 복 많이 받아 복 많이 나누어 주십시오. 복음의 복을 통해 수많은 영혼들을 전도하고 선교하는 아름다운 새해가 되시길 빕니다.

Start Anew With Holy Expectations

God has given us the New Year as a gift. God renews us through the New Year. God is a God who renews. “[He] satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Psalm 103:5). “He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”” (Revelation 21:5a). God sends the Holy Spirit to renew us all the time. “But because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5b). God is the God who does new things. “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up” (Isaiah 43:19a).

God, who grants us the New Year as a gift, wants us to start anew with holy expectations. Faith is having holy expectations. Faith is to have hope. “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). To have hope is to have holy expectations. Faith is leaving the past and moving toward the future. Living by faith is not going backward. “But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him” (Hebrews 10:38). Paul said that he forgets things behind and runs toward the goal ahead. “Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13–14).

The holy expectation is contained in the name of God. God is “Jehovah-Jireh”. “Jehovah-Jireh” means “the Lord has prepared.” The word “Jireh” implies “to see, to examine, to observe.” God took care of Abraham and provided him with what he needed most. He has prepared the best for him. God is the God who always waits for us after preparing good things. When Abraham went up to Mount Moriah to sacrifice Isaac, God had prepared a ram in advance and waited. When the Israelites entered the wilderness, God prepared a pillar of fire and cloud. He prepared manna, quail, and living water from a rock. God examines each of us. And he is the one who prepares the most necessary and the best.

Holy expectations are contained in good encounters. Life is an encounter. Pray for a good encounter. Look forward to a good encounter. Above all, expect an encounter with the blessed Word of God. Look forward to meeting with good learning opportunities for change and maturity. Human happiness lies in beautifully changing and maturing. Also, expect blessings from new encounters. New encounters lead to new learning. A new encounter presents a new understanding. New encounters provide new opportunities. New encounters create new history. New encounters open new paths and open new doors. It is important to continue to cultivate beautiful friendships with the people you meet all the time. But if you want a new change, try a new encounter. Many new encounters are hidden behind new encounters. Remember again and again that it is good encounters that form us beautifully.

Holy expectations are contained in God's providence. God's providence is God's holding. God's providence is the power to work all things together for good. The Bible verse I always hold on to is Romans 8:28. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). I have encountered many incidents in my life's journey. I experienced hardships, adversity, and trials. I've been hurt. I also heard gossip. But when I relied on God, God worked everything together for good. When I was on the edge of the cliff, God made me soar by working things together for good. He made me laugh at the edge of the cliff. God has turned my despair into hope and hardships into blessings. He turned wounds into glory.

God is an amazing God who works things together for good in whatever happens to those who love him. We do not know what we will encounter during the new year. Life is hard. Life is never easy. But one thing we know for sure. It is the fact that God is with us. It is true that God blesses us and helps us. It is true that God is the one who writes the drama of reversal in our lives. Our holy expectations are not based on ourselves or our circumstances. It is based on the wisdom, power, and love of God whom we trust. Start the new year with holy expectations. Start the new year by trusting in God who prepares new blessings, new encounters, and new things. Happy New Year. Be blessed with many blessings and share them.
