[목회서신] 거룩한 기대를 품고 살아가는 지혜 | Wisdom of Living with the Holy Expectations

거룩한 기대를 품고 살아가는 것은 지혜입니다. 헨리 데이비드 소로는 “사람들은 대부분 조용한 절망 속에 살아간다.”라고 말했습니다. 조용한 절망이란 기대를 저버린 삶을 의미합니다. 가장 위험한 것은 냉소주의입니다. 무엇이든 해 보아도 소용이 없다는 것입니다. 열심히 노력해도, 열심히 기도해도, 열심히 봉사해도 별 도움이 안 된다는 것입니다. 그래서 더 이상 아무 시도도 하지 않겠다고 생각하는 것이 냉소주의입니다. 우리는 냉소주의를 극복하고 거룩한 기대를 품고 살아가야 합니다. 우리가 세상을 향해 큰 기대를 걸 수 없습니다. 하지만 우리는 하나님을 향해서는 날마다 거룩한 기대를 품고 살아야 합니다. 성경에서 하나님의 능력으로 병 고침을 경험하고, 문제를 통해 기적을 경험한 사람들에게는 몇 가지 공통점이 있습니다.

첫째, 자신의 문제를 먼저 인정했습니다. 예수님께 나아갔던 가나안 여인은 자기 딸이 흉악한 귀신 들린 것을 인정했습니다(마 15:22). 아무 문제가 없는 것처럼 문제를 부인하거나 감춤으로 문제가 해결되는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 문제를 인정하고 직면함으로 문제는 해결될 수 있습니다. 문제를 가지고 있는 것을 부끄러워하지 마십시오. 성경에 나오는 모든 기적은 문제와 함께 시작되었습니다. 문제는 기적의 시작입니다. 문제를 만나면 문제를 가지고 하나님께 나아가십시오.

둘째, 거룩한 기대를 갖고 하나님께 나아갔습니다. 믿음이란 거룩한 기대를 품는 것입니다. 믿음이란 자기 확신이 아니라 전능하신 하나님을 믿는 것입니다. 우리는 무력하지만 하나님은 전능하십니다. 우리는 지혜가 부족하지만 하나님은 지혜가 충만하십니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도에 귀를 기울이시는 분입니다. 하나님은 우리 문제에 관심을 갖고 문제를 해결해 주시기 원하는 분입니다. 하나님은 우리의 믿음, 즉 우리의 기대를 따라 역사하십니다. 믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없습니다(히 11:6). 하나님은 우리의 믿음을 따라 상을 주시고, 믿음을 따라 기적을 베풀어 주십니다. 하나님의 기적을 믿는 사람에게는 지금도 기적이 계속됩니다.

셋째, 작은 은혜를 소중히 여길 줄 알았습니다. 지혜는 작은 은혜를 소중히 여기고, 그 작은 은혜를 키우는 것입니다. 작은 은혜를 키우기 위해서는 태도가 좋아야 합니다. 좋은 태도는 열린 마음입니다. 축복의 비가 아무리 쏟아져도 그릇이 열려 있지 않으면 축복의 비를 담을 수 없습니다. 우리가 하나님의 풍성한 은혜를 받기 위해서는 작은 은혜를 소중히 여겨야 합니다. 모든 큰 은혜는 작은 은혜로부터 시작됩니다. 작은 은혜, 작은 것을 소홀히 여기는 사람에게는 큰 은혜가 임하지 않습니다. 가나안 여인이 딸을 고쳐 달라고 예수님께 간구했을 때 예수님의 첫 반응은 침묵이었습니다. 그다음 반응은 거절이었습니다. 그때 가나안 여인은 개가 주인의 상에 떨어지는 빵 부스러기를 먹는 것처럼 자기에게 부스러기 은혜를 달라고 간구했습니다(마 15:27). 예수님은 가나안 여인의 말을 들으시고 감동하셨습니다. 그녀의 믿음이 크다고 칭찬해 주셨습니다. 그녀의 소원을 들어주셨습니다(마 15:28). 예수님은 부스러기와 같은 작은 은혜를 소중히 여길 줄 알았던 가나안 여인에게 큰 은혜를 베풀어 주셨습니다.

넷째, 지칠 줄 모르는 끈기를 가지고 기도했습니다. 가나안 여인은 예수님의 은혜를 받기 전까지 물러서지 않았습니다. 지칠 줄 모르는 끈기로 거듭 간구했습니다. 하나님은 가끔 우리 간구에 응답하기를 지체하십니다. 때로는 거절하실 때도 있습니다. 하지만 하나님의 거절은 우리 기도가 얼마나 간절한가를 보기 원하시는 반응일 수 있습니다. 우리는 너무 쉽게 물러섭니다. 너무 쉽게 포기합니다. 너무 쉽게 의심합니다. 성경에서 하나님의 은혜를 체험한 사람들의 특징은 거룩한 기대를 가지고 끈기 있게 기도했다는 것입니다. 엘리야가 갈멜 산상에서 비 오기를 기도했을 때 7번 기도했습니다. 야곱이 얍복강에서 하나님의 천사와 씨름할 때 축복을 받기 전까지 천사를 놓지 않았습니다. 야곱은 끈질긴 기도의 사람이었습니다.

다섯 번째, “한 번 더” 시도해 볼 줄 아는 사람들이었습니다. 가끔 우리는 문을 열 때, 열쇠꾸러미를 가지고 하나씩 시도해 볼 때가 있습니다. 항상 그런 것은 아니지만 때로는 열쇠꾸러미의 마지막 열쇠로 문이 열리는 것을 경험하게 됩니다. 한 번 더 기도하고, 한 번 더 기적을 기대하고, 한 번 더 노력하는 것이 지혜입니다. 저는 초심과 함께 뒷심의 중요성을 믿습니다. 많은 사람들이 시작은 잘하지만 뒷심이 약해 중요한 과업을 성취하지 못하는 것을 봅니다. 뒷심은 한 번 더 시도해 보는 것입니다. 한 걸음을 더 내딛는 것입니다. 한 번 더 기도하는 것입니다. 한 번 더 부탁해 보는 것입니다.

Wisdom of Living with the Holy Expectations

Living with holy expectations is wisdom. Henry David Thoreau said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and die with their song still inside them.” Quiet desperation means living a life of disappointment. The most dangerous is cynicism. No matter what you try, it's no use. It won’t be helpful no matter how hard you work, no matter how hard you pray, and no matter how hard you serve. So, it's cynicism to think you're not going to try anymore. We must overcome cynicism and live with holy expectations. We cannot have high expectations for the world. But we must live with holy expectations toward God every day. In the Bible, those who experienced healing by the power of God and experienced miracles through problems have some things in common.

First, they acknowledged their problem first. The Canaanite woman who came to Jesus admitted that her own daughter was possessed by a vicious demon (Matthew 15:22). Denying or hiding the problem, as if there were no problems, does not solve the problem. Rather, problems can be solved by acknowledging and facing them. Don't be shy about having problems. Every miracle in the Bible started with a problem. The problem is the beginning of a miracle. When you encounter a problem, go to God with it.

Second, they came to God with holy expectations. Faith is having holy expectations. Faith is not self-confidence, but belief in Almighty God. We are powerless, but God is almighty. We lack wisdom, but God is full of wisdom. God hears our prayers. God is interested in our problems and wants to solve them. God works according to our faith, that is, our expectations. Without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). God rewards us according to our faith and works miracles according to our faith. For those who believe in God's miracles, miracles continue even now.

Third, they knew how to cherish small graces. Wisdom is cherishing the small graces we have experienced and nurturing those little touches of grace. In order to nurture a small grace, you must have a good attitude. A good attitude is an open mind. No matter how much the rain of blessing pours, if the vessel is not open, it cannot contain the rain of blessing. In order to receive God's abundant grace, we must cherish small graces. All great blessings start with small ones. Great grace does not come to those who neglect little grace and little things. When the Canaanite woman asked Jesus to heal her daughter, Jesus' first response was silence. The next reaction was refusal. Then the Canaanite woman pleaded with him for the favor of the crumbs, as a dog eats the crumbs that fall from themaster's table (Matthew 15:27). Jesus listened to the Canaanite woman and was moved by her. He praised her for her great faith. He granted her wish (Matthew 15:28). Jesus bestowed his great grace on a Canaanite woman who knew how to cherish the small crumbs.

Fourth, they prayed with tireless persistence. The Canaanite woman did not back down until she received the grace of Jesus. With her tireless persistence, she pleaded again and again. God sometimes delays in answering our petitions. Sometimes he refuses. But God's refusal may be a response he wants to see how earnest our prayers are. We back off too easily. We give up too easily. we doubt too easily. The characteristic of those who experienced God's grace in the Bible was that they prayed persistently with holy expectations. When Elijah prayed for rain on Mount Carmel, he prayed seven times. When Jacob wrestled with the angel of God at the Jabbok River, he did not let go of the angel until he received a blessing. Jacob was a man of persistent prayer.

Fifth, they were able to try “one more time”. Sometimes when we open a door, we take a pack of keys and try them one by one. Sometimes, but not always, you will experience the door being opened with the last key in your keychain. It is wise to pray one more time, expect miracles one more time, and try one more time. I believe in the importance of the end-strength as well as the initial mind. We see many people starting well but failing to accomplish important tasks because of a weak end-strength. The end-strength is to try one more time. It's to step on one more time. It’s to pray one more time. It’s to ask one more time.
