[목회서신] 기다리면 알게 됩니다! | Wait and You Will Find Out

인생은 기다림입니다. 신앙생활도 기다림입니다. 기다린다는 것은 인내한다는 것입니다. 오래 참는 것입니다. 기다린다는 것은 끝까지 견딘다는 것입니다. 그래서 기다리는 것이 쉽지 않습니다. 기다리는 것이 쉽지 않기 때문에 기다리는 사람은 복을 받게 됩니다(사 30:18). 예수님이 부활 승천하실 때 제자들에게 아버지의 약속하신 것을 기다리라고 말씀하셨습니다. “예루살렘을 떠나지 말고 내게서 들은 바 아버지께서 약속하신 것을 기다리라”(행 1:4하). 부활하신 예수님을 만난 사람은 500명이 넘었습니다(고전 15:6). 하지만 예수님의 말씀을 따라 예루살렘을 떠나지 않고 기다리던 사람은 120명뿐이었습니다(행 1:15).

예수님의 말씀을 따라 기다리던 사람들은 성령님의 능력을 받았습니다. “기다리면 받게 됩니다.” 그들은 하나님의 약속이 성취되는 것을 보았습니다. “기다리면 보게 됩니다.” 그들은 성령님이 어떤 분인가를 알게 되었습니다. 하나님의 구속의 드라마가 어떻게 전개 되는가를 알게 되었습니다. “기다리면 알게 됩니다.” 우리는 예수님의 제자들을 통해 기다림의 지혜를 배웁니다.

첫째, 약속을 붙잡고 기도하며 기다리십시오. 제가 기다림을 강조할 때, 가끔 제게 묻는 분들이 있습니다. “기다리기만 하면 됩니까?” 그냥 기다리기만 해서는 안 됩니다. 기다림에도 원리가 있고 기다림에도 지혜가 필요합니다. 가장 먼저 약속의 말씀을 붙잡고 기도하며 기다려야 합니다. 하나님은 우리가 소원하는 것들을 기도를 통해 허락해 주십니다. 구하면 주십니다(마 7:7; 요 14;13). 반면에 구하지 않으면 얻지 못합니다(약 4:2).

둘째, 기대하며 기다리십시오. 믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상입니다(히 11:1). 믿음은 바라는 것입니다. 바란다는 것은 기대한다는 것입니다. 기대한다는 것은 소원을 품는 것입니다(빌 2:13). 기대한다는 것은 우리가 기도하는 것이 응답될 것을 믿는 것입니다. 예수님께 나아 와서 기적을 경험한 사람들은 한결같이 기대하는 마음을 품었습니다. 예수님은 기대하는 마음을 품고 나온 사람들에게 “네 믿은 대로 될지어다”라고 말씀하셨습니다(마 8:13). 하나님은 우리의 기대를 따라 역사하십니다. 그래서 우리는 날마다 거룩한 기대를 품고 기도하고 기다려야 합니다.

셋째, 하나님을 바라보며 기다리십시오. 어려운 환경을 바라보면 조급해집니다. 우리의 생각과 감정은 우리 시선과 밀접한 관계가 있습니다. 우리가 직면한 문제를 바라보게 되면 문제가 점점 더 크게 느껴집니다. 하지만 우리가 문제에서 눈을 떼어 하나님을 바라볼 때 하나님의 크심을 깨닫게 됩니다. 크신 하나님과 함께 문제를 바라볼 때 문제는 작게 느껴집니다. 아브라함은 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었습니다(롬 4:18). 우리 신앙은 환경적으로 바랄 수 없는 중에 하나님을 바라고 믿을 때 빛을 발하게 됩니다. 아브라함의 몸은 노쇠했고, 사라의 몸에 경수는 끊어졌습니다. 하지만 그들은 하나님의 약속하신 말씀을 믿었습니다. 결국 이삭을 낳게 되었습니다.

넷째, 하나님이 일하실 수 있는 시간을 내어 드리며 기다리십시오. 헨리 나우웬의 말처럼 기도한다는 것은 하나님이 개입하실 수 있는 공간을 내어 드리는 것입니다. 요셉이 감옥에서 기다릴 때 술맡은 관원장과의 만남을 예비하셨습니다. 요셉이 감옥에서 기다릴 때 하나님은 요셉을 위해 바로와의 만남을 예비하셨습니다. 또한 요셉을 위해 바로의 꿈을 예비하셨습니다. 요셉을 위해 7년 풍년과 7년 흉년을 예비하셨습니다. 기도한 후에 너무 서둘러 기도 응답을 기대하지 마십시오. 때로는 하나님이 급히 응답하실 때도 있습니다. 하지만 대부분 하나님은 서서히 우리 기도에 응답하시는 것을 보게 됩니다.

다섯째, 미래를 준비하며 기다리십시오. 그냥 기다리면 안 됩니다. 그냥 기다리면 예수님의 달란트의 비유에 나오는 한 달란트 받은 사람이 됩니다. 그는 아무것도 하지 않았습니다. 예수님은 그에게 “악하고 게으른 종”이라고 책망하셨습니다(마 25:26). 그 책망과 함께 아주 중요한 말씀을 하십니다. “나는 심지 않은 데서 거두고 헤치지 않은데서 모으는 줄로 네가 알았느냐”(마 25:26). 하나님은 심은 것을 거두십니다. 야고보는 인내에 대해 이야기할 때 농부를 예로 듭니다. “농부가 땅에서 나는 귀한 열매를 바라고 길이 참아 이른 비와 늦은 비를 기다리나니”(약 5:7). 농부는 씨앗을 심고 가꾸고 기다리는 중에 풍성한 열매를 거두게 됩니다.

기다림은 수동태처럼 느껴집니다. 하지만 기다리는 동안 많은 일들이 전개되는 것을 알아야 합니다. 엄마의 자궁에 잉태해 있는 어린아이는 기다리는 중에 자랍니다. 농부가 심은 씨앗은 기다리는 중에 자랍니다. 아픈 상처는 기다리는 중에 치유되고 회복됩니다. 우리가 하나님께 드리는 기도는 기다리는 중에 응답됩니다. 진정한 기다림은 농부처럼 일상에 충실한 삶을 사는 것입니다. 성실하게 사는 것입니다. 무엇보다 기도하며 기다리십시오. 하나님은 때가 되면 반드시 응답하실 것입니다.

Wait and You Will Find Out

Life is waiting. The life of faith is also waiting. To wait is to be patient. It is enduring long. To wait is to endure to the end. So waiting is not easy. Because waiting is not easy, those who wait will be blessed (Isaiah 30:18). When Jesus ascended to heaven, he told his disciples to wait for what the Father had promised. "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about." (Acts 1:4b). More than 500 people met the resurrected Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:6). However, there were only 120 people who listened to Jesus' word of waiting without leaving Jerusalem (Acts 1:15).

Those who waited according to the words of Jesus received the power of the Holy Spirit. "Wait, and you will receive it." They saw God's promises fulfilled. "Wait, and you will see." They knew who the Holy Spirit was. I learned how the drama of God's redemption is unfolding. "Wait, and you will find out." We learn the wisdom of waiting through the disciples of Jesus.

First, wait as you pray and hold on to the promise. When I emphasize waiting, sometimes people ask me. "Do I just wait?" It requires more than just waiting. There is a principle in waiting, and wisdom is also required in waiting. First, pray as you hold on to the promise and wait. God grants us what we want through prayer. If you ask, it will be given to you (Matthew 7:7; John 14:13). On the other hand, if you do not ask, you will not find (James 4:2).

Second, wait in expectation. Faith is the confidence in what we hope for (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is wanting. To want is to expect. To expect is to hope (Philippians 2:13). To expect is to believe that our prayers will be answered. Those who came to Jesus and experienced miracles had the same expectation. Jesus said to those who came out with a hopeful heart, "Let it be done just as you believed it would" (Matthew 8:13). God works according to our expectations. That is why we should daily pray and wait with holy expectations.

Third, wait as you look to God. Looking at a challenging environment makes you impatient. Our thoughts and emotions are closely related to our gaze. When we look at our problems, they feel bigger and bigger. However, when we take our eyes off our problems and look at God, we realize the greatness of God. When we look at problems with our great God, the problems seem small. Abraham believed in hope amid hopelessness (Romans 4:18). Our faith shines amid our helpless environment when we hope and believe in God. Abraham’s body was feeble, while Sarah’s body was fertile. Yet, the two continued to hope and were confident in the promise of God and able to conceive Isaac.

Fourth, wait as you make time for God to work. As Henri Nouwen put it, to pray is to make room for God to intervene. While Joseph was waiting in prison, he arranged a meeting with the chief cupbearer. While Joseph was waiting in prison, God prepared a meeting with Pharaoh for Joseph. He also prepared Pharaoh's dream for Joseph. He prepared seven years of plenty and seven years of famine for Joseph. After praying, do not expect an answer to your prayer too hastily. Sometimes God responds hastily. But most of the time, we see God slowly answering our prayers.

Fifth, wait as you prepare for the future. Don't just wait. If you just wait, you will become like the one who received the one talent in Jesus' parable of the talents. He didn't do anything. Jesus rebuked him as a "wicked, lazy servant" (Matthew 25:26). Along with that rebuke, He makes a significant statement. "So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?" (Matthew 25:26). God reaps what you sow. When James speaks of patience, he uses the peasant as an example. "See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains" (James 5:7). A farmer reaps abundant fruit while planting, cultivating, and waiting for seed.

Waiting feels passive. But while you wait, you should know that many things unfold. A young child, conceived in the mother's womb, grows while waiting. The seeds planted by the farmer grow while they wait. Sick wounds heal and recover while waiting. Our prayers to God are answered while we wait. True waiting is to give your best every day as a farmer. It is to live faithfully. Above all else, pray and wait. God will surely answer when the time is right.
