[목회서신] 기도가 답입니다 | Prayer Is the Answer

   어머니날이 찾아오면 어머니의 기도하시던 모습이 떠오릅니다. 어머니는 미국에 오셔서 저와 함께 사시는 동안, 하루에 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도하셨습니다. 다니엘이 하루에 세 번 무릎을 꿇고 기도한 것처럼 어머니도 하루 세 번씩 기도하셨습니다. 어머니는 기도가 답인 것을 아셨습니다. 그래서 늘 기도하셨습니다. 어려운 문제에 직면할 때마다 기도하셨습니다. 저는 어머니가 뿌린 기도의 씨앗의 풍성한 열매를 받아 누리고 있습니다. 부모의 기도는 자녀의 미래를 위한 복된 씨앗입니다. 제가 모국에 와서 전한 두 번째 설교는 “기도가 답이다.”였습니다. 저는 늘 기도가 부족한 사람입니다. 그래서 기도에 관한 글을 쓸 때마다 부끄럽습니다. 하지만 저는 기도의 능력을 잘 알고 있습니다. “기도가 답이다.”라는 사실을 가르쳐 주신 분은 예수님이십니다.

하루는 귀신 들린 아들을 둔 아버지가, 제자들을 찾아와서 아들을 고쳐 달라고 부탁했습니다. 하지만 제자들은 귀신을 쫓아내지 못했습니다. 예수님이 변화산에서 내려오셔서 귀신들린 아이를 고쳐 주십니다. 나중에 제자들이 예수님께 조용히 묻습니다. “우리는 어찌하여 능히 그 귀신을 좇아내지 못하였나이까”(막 9:28하). 예수님의 답은 기도였습니다. “이르시되 기도 외에 다른 것으로는 이런 종류가 나갈 수 없느니라”(막 9:29). 영적 전쟁에서 승리하는 비결은 기도에 있습니다.

왜 기도가 답일까요? 기도할 때 하나님의 지혜를 얻을 수 있기 때문입니다. 지혜는 분별력이며, 문제 해결 능력입니다. 지혜는 통찰력이며, 예견력입니다. 기도하면 하나님이 지혜를 주십니다. “너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라”(약 1:5). 성령님은 지혜의 영이십니다(사 11:2). 우리가 기도할 때 성령님은 우리에게 지혜를 선물해 주십니다.

왜 기도가 답일까요? 기도하게 되면 은밀한 것을 깨달을 수 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 우리가 기도할 때 남이 알지 못하는 것을 알게 하십니다. 남이 볼 수 없는 것을 보게 하십니다. 하나님은 다니엘이 기도할 때 바벨론의 술객들이 밝힐 수 없는 은밀한 것을 계시해 주셨습니다. “이에 은밀한 것이 밤에 환상으로 다니엘에게 나타나 보이매 다니엘이 하늘에 계신 하나님을 찬송하니라. ... 그는 깊고 은밀한 일을 나타내시고 어두운 데 있는 것을 아시며 또 빛이 그와 함께 있도다”(단 2:19, 22). 하나님은 우리가 기도할 때 은밀한 일을 보여 주십니다. “너는 내게 부르짖으라 내가 네게 응답하겠고 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라”(렘 33:3).

왜 기도가 답일까요? 기도할 때 매인 것이 풀리고, 닫힌 문이 열리기 때문입니다. 예수님은 기도를 천국 열쇠라고 말씀하십니다. “내가 천국 열쇠를 네게 주리니 네가 땅에서 무엇이든지 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이요 네가 땅에서 무엇이든지 풀면 하늘에서도 풀리리라”(마 16:19). 베드로가 옥에 갇혔을 때 교회는 그를 위해 간절히 하나님께 기도했습니다(행 12:5). 하나님이 성도들의 간구를 들으시고 천사를 옥중에 보내 주셨습니다. 천사가 옥 안에 임하는 순간 베드로를 매고 있던 쇠사슬이 벗어졌습니다(행 12:7). 매닫혔던 쇠문이 저절로 열렸습니다(행 12:10). 기도할 때 매인 것이 풀리고 닫힌 문이 열립니다. 한나가 기도할 때 닫혔던 그녀의 태 문이 열려 아들을 낳았습니다(삼상 1:20, 27).

왜 기도가 답일까요? 기도할 때 성령님의 능력을 받을 수 있기 때문입니다. 위로부터 임하는 능력을 받게 됩니다. 모세가 육신의 힘으로 할 수 있었던 것은 애굽인 한 사람을 쳐 죽인 것입니다. 하지만 그가 성령님의 능력을 받았을 때 히브리 민족을 바로의 손에서 건져내어 해방시킬 수 있었습니다. 모세는 기도를 통해 위로부터 임하는 능력을 받았습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 그의 능력과 그의 얼굴을 항상 구하라고 명하십니다. “여호와와 그의 능력을 구할지어다 그의 얼굴을 항상 구할지어다”(시 105:4). 하나님은 우리가 기도할 때 그분의 능력을 부어주십니다.

왜 기도가 답일까요? 기도를 통해 하나님의 도움을 받을 수 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 연약합니다. 인간은 유한합니다. 그런 까닭에 하나님의 도움과 다른 사람의 도움 없이는 살아갈 수 없습니다. 기도할 때 우리는 은혜의 보좌에 나아가서 하나님의 도움을 받게 됩니다. “그러므로 우리는 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라”(히 4:16). 하나님이 어떻게 우리를 도와주실까요? 천사를 통해 도와주십니다(단 6:22; 눅 22:43). 좋은 만남을 통해 도와 주십니다. 느헤미야가 기도할 때 아닥사스다 왕이 도와주었습니다. 사도 바울이 기도처를 찾는 중에 자주색 옷감 장사 루디아를 만나 도움을 받았습니다(행 16:13-15).

기도가 답이 되는 경험을 하기 위해서는 어떻게 기도하면 좋을까요? 회개하며 기도하십시오(시 32:5, 66:18). 말씀을 붙잡고 기도하십시오(요 15:7). 믿음으로 기도하십시오(막 11:24; 약 1:6-8). 낙심하지 말고 인내를 갖고 기도하십시오(눅 18:1-7). 기도 응답을 받을 때까지 끈기 있게 기도하십시오(왕상 18:44). 엘리야의 기도 응답의 비결은 간절한 기도, 끈기 있는 기도였습니다(약 5:17). 감사하며 기도하십시오. 감사 기도는 간구 기도보다 더 강력한 기도입니다. 다니엘은 감사하며 기도했습니다(단 6:10). 기도를 통해 기적을 경험하시길 빕니다.

Prayer Is the Answer

  When Mother’s Day comes around, I remember my mother praying. While living with me in the United States, she knelt to pray three times a day. Just as Daniel knelt and prayed three times a day, so did my mother. She knew that prayer was the answer. So she prayed constantly. Whenever she faced a difficult problem, she prayed. I am now reaping the abundant fruit of the seeds of prayer she sowed. A parent's prayer is a blessed seed sown for their child’s future. The second message I delivered after arriving in my motherland was titled “Prayer Is the Answer.” I am someone who is always lacking in prayer. So whenever I write about prayer, I feel unworthy. But I know well the power of prayer. It was Jesus who taught me that “Prayer is the answer.”

One day, a father whose son was possessed by an evil spirit came to the disciples and asked them to heal him. But the disciples could not drive out the demon. Jesus came down from the Mount of Transfiguration and healed the boy. Later, the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” (Mark 9:28b). Jesus’ answer was prayer. “He replied, ‘This kind can come out only by prayer.’” (Mark 9:29). The key to victory in spiritual warfare is prayer.

Why is prayer the answer? Because through prayer, we receive God’s wisdom. Wisdom is discernment and the ability to solve problems. It is insight and foresight. When we pray, God gives us wisdom. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5). The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wisdom (Isaiah 11:2). When we pray, the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of wisdom.

Why is prayer the answer? Because in prayer, we come to understand what is hidden. God reveals to us things others cannot know. He lets us see what others cannot see. When Daniel prayed, God revealed secrets that the Babylonian magicians could not uncover. “During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven... He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.” (Daniel 2:19, 22). When we pray, God shows us hidden things. “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3).

Why is prayer the answer? Because in prayer, what is bound is loosened and what is shut is opened. Jesus called prayer the key to the kingdom of heaven. “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19). When Peter was imprisoned, the church earnestly prayed to God for him (Acts 12:5). God heard their prayers and sent an angel to the prison. As soon as the angel appeared, the chains fell off Peter (Acts 12:7), and the iron gate opened by itself (Acts 12:10). When we pray, chains fall off and closed doors open. When Hannah prayed, her closed womb was opened, and she bore a son (1 Samuel 1:20, 27).

Why is prayer the answer? Because in prayer, we receive the power of the Holy Spirit. We receive power from above. In his own strength, Moses once killed a single Egyptian. But when he received the power of the Holy Spirit, he led the entire nation of Israel out of Pharaoh’s hand. Moses received divine power through prayer. God commands us to seek His strength and His face always. “Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.” (Psalm 105:4). When we pray, God pours out His power upon us.

Why is prayer the answer? Because through prayer, we receive help from God. We are weak. We are finite. That is why we cannot live without God’s help and the help of others. In prayer, we draw near to the throne of grace and receive help from God. “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16). How does God help us? Through angels (Daniel 6:22; Luke 22:43). Through divine appointments. When Nehemiah prayed, King Artaxerxes helped him. While Paul was looking for a place to pray, he met Lydia, a seller of purple cloth, who helped him (Acts 16:13–15).

How should we pray to experience that prayer is truly the answer? Pray with repentance (Psalm 32:5; 66:18). Pray holding on to God’s Word (John 15:7). Pray with faith (Mark 11:24; James 1:6–8). Pray with perseverance, without losing heart (Luke 18:1–7). Pray persistently until the answer comes (1 Kings 18:44). Elijah’s secret to answered prayer was fervent, persistent prayer (James 5:17). Pray with thanksgiving. Thanksgiving prayer is more powerful than petition prayer. Daniel prayed with thanksgiving (Daniel 6:10). May you experience God’s miracles through prayer.
