[목회서신] 기회는 준비된 사람에게 찾아옵니다! | Opportunities Come to Those Who Are Prepared!

작은 기회는 자주 찾아옵니다. 하지만 정말 좋은 기회는 드물게 찾아옵니다. 정말 좋은 기회란 인생을 역전시킬 수 있는 기회입니다. 변곡점(變曲點)을 만들어 내는 기회입니다. 변곡점이란 큰 변화를 일으킬 수 있는 전환점을 의미합니다. 그렇다면 기회는 어떻게 찾아올까요? 제가 경험한 기회는 좋은 만남을 통해 찾아옵니다. 만남이 좋은 기회를 제공해줍니다. 그래서 우리는 좋은 만남에 깨어 있어야 합니다. 좋은 만남을 소중히 여길 줄 알아야 합니다. 좋은 만남이 찾아왔을 때 정원을 가꾸듯 잘 가꾸어야 합니다. 또한 기회는 역경과 시련과 고난을 통해 찾아옵니다. 이것이 기회의 신비입니다. 고난 속에 기회가 담겨 있습니다. 고난 속에 기회가 담겨 있는 것을 볼 수 있는 능력이 통찰력입니다.

우리는 고난이 찾아오면 괴로워합니다. 그 이유는 고난이 고통을 주기 때문입니다. 하지만 고난을 통해 배우는 것은 고난이 고통만 주는 것이 아니라 축복도 선물해 준다는 사실입니다. 고난에 잘 반응하면 고난을 통해 더욱 성장하고 발전하게 됩니다. 그러므로 고난이 찾아올 때 고난을 너무 두려워하지 마십시오. 고난으로부터 도망가려고 하지 마십시오. 오히려 고난을 선물로 여기고, 고난을 수용하십시오. 고난을 잘 견디십시오. 그때 고난은 우리에게 좋은 기회를 선물해 줍니다. 고난은 우리에게 보배로운 지혜를 선물해 줍니다.

아주 소중한 기회는 잘 준비된 사람만 알아볼 수 있습니다. 잘 준비된 사람만 붙잡을 수 있습니다. 어떻게 하면 잘 준비할 수 있을까요? 무엇을 준비하고 어떻게 준비해야 할까요? 제가 그동안 배우고 경험한 준비에 대한 지혜를 네 가지로 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 기도를 통해 준비하십시오. 정말 좋은 기회는 하나님이 주십니다. 위로부터 임합니다. 그래서 우리는 기도해야 합니다. 기도하면서 꿈을 꾸십시오. 기도하면서 목표를 세우십시오. 기도하면서 목표를 달성하기 위한 계획을 세우십시오. 기도하면서 하나님께 지혜를 구하십시오. 분별력을 구하십시오. 기회를 분별하고 포착할 수 있는 능력을 구하십시오. 바울은 가는 곳마다 기도처를 찾아 기도합니다(행 16:13, 16). 기도하는 중에 하나님이 예비해 둔 사람을 만나게 됩니다(행 16:14-15). 그 만남이 선교와 교회 개척의 기회가 됩니다.

둘째, 학습을 통해 준비하십시오. 학습(學習)이란 배우고 익히는 것을 의미합니다. 학습(學習)이란 한문은 “배울” 학(學)과 “익힐” 습(習)이란 단어가 합성된 것입니다. 우리는 학습을 통해 지식과 정보를 습득할 수 있습니다. 학습하는 길은 다양합니다. 그중의 하나는 책을 읽는 것입니다. 책 속에 우리가 필요한 지식과 정보가 담겨 있습니다. 책 속에 미래의 흐름을 파악할 수 있는 통찰이 담겨 있습니다. 책은 우리의 지성을 자극해 줍니다. 감성을 풍부하게 해 줍니다. 영성에 깊이를 더해 줍니다. 책을 가까이하십시오. 책 중의 책인 성경을 읽고 묵상하십시오. 읽는 것에서 멈추면 안 됩니다. 읽고 묵상할 때 깨달음이 임합니다. 지혜가 임합니다. 저는 평생 학습의 길을 걷고 있습니다. 배움의 즐거움 속에 살고 있습니다. 책 속에 길이 있습니다.

셋째, 훈련을 통해 준비하십시오. 어느 분야이든지 탁월함에 이르는 길은 훈련에 있습니다. 탁월한 운동선수, 탁월한 예술가, 탁월한 디자이너, 탁월한 지도자가 되는 길은 훈련에 있습니다. 훈련은 미래를 위한 것입니다. 훈련이란 밝은 미래를 위해 고통을 먼저 선택하는 것입니다. 스캇 펙은 “훈련이란 고통을 먼저 선택하고 즐거움을 나중에 누리는 것이다”고 말했습니다. 그는 “훈련이란 즐거움을 지연시키는 능력이다.”고 말했습니다. 훈련의 비밀은 지속과 반복에 있습니다. 무조건 반복하는 것이 아니라 창조적으로 반복하는 것입니다. 창조적인 반복이란 기술이 향상되고 발전하는 방향으로 반복하는 것입니다. 잘못된 방법과 잘못된 태도를 반복해서는 결코 탁월함에 이를 수 없습니다. 창조적 반복만이 지속적인 발전을 선물해 줍니다. 더 높은 차원으로 나아가도록 도와줍니다.

넷째, 저축을 통해 준비하십시오. 기회를 포착하기 위해서는 자원이 필요합니다. 지적, 인적, 물질적, 그리고 영적 자원이 필요합니다. 자원은 저축을 통해 축적됩니다. 저축은 축적에 목적이 있는 것이 아닙니다. 저축은 기회를 포착하기 위한 것입니다. 재정을 저축하기 위해서는 근검절약해야 합니다. 수입보다 적게 사용해야 합니다. 저축은 절약만을 의미하지 않습니다. 지혜로운 투자가 저축에 포함되어야 합니다. 하나님은 투기를 싫어하십니다. 하지만 건전한 투자는 좋아하십니다. 건전한 투자를 위해서는 연구해야 합니다. 또한 투자한 후에는 인내를 가지고 기다릴 줄 알아야 합니다. 우리 교회가 성전 건축을 위해 땅을 구입할 수 있었던 것은 매년 교회 재정의 5분의 1씩 저축했기 때문입니다. 하나님의 지혜는 미래를 준비하는 데 있습니다. 지혜를 통해 미래를 잘 준비함으로 풍성한 축복을 누리고 나누시길 빕니다.

Opportunities Come to Those Who Are Prepared!

Small opportunities often come. But the really good opportunities rarely come. A really good opportunity is a life-reversing opportunity. This is an opportunity to create an inflection point. An inflection point is a turning point that can lead to a major change. So how do opportunities come? The opportunities I experienced come through good encounters. Meetings provide great opportunities. So we need to be awakened to good encounters. We must learn how to value good encounters. When a good encounter comes, we should take good care of the relationship as if we were gardening. Opportunities also come through adversity, trials, and hardships. This is the mystery of opportunity. Opportunities are contained in hardships. Insight is the ability to see opportunities in hardships.

When hardships come, we suffer. This is because suffering causes pain. But what we learn from hardship is that hardships do not only bring us pain, but also blessings. If you respond well to hardship, you will grow and make further progress through hardship. So, when hardships come, don't be too afraid of them. Do not try to run away from hardships. Rather, see it as a gift and accept it. Endure hardships well. Then they will present us with good opportunities. Hardships gives us precious wisdom.

A very valuable opportunity can only be recognized by a well-prepared person. Only a well-prepared person can hold onto it. How can we prepare well? What and how should we prepare? I would like to share the wisdom of preparation that I have learned and experienced over the years in four ways.

First, be prepared through prayer. A really good opportunity is given by God. It comes from above. That is why we must pray. Dream as you pray. Set goals as you pray. Make a plan to achieve your goals as you pray. Ask God for wisdom in prayer. Seek discernment. Ask for the power to discern and seize opportunities. Wherever Paul went, he found a place of prayer and prayed (Acts 16:13, 16). While praying, he met the person God has prepared (Acts 16:14-15). That meeting became an opportunity for missionary work and church planting.

Second, be prepared through studying. To study is to learn and to master. The Chinese characters used for the word study(學習) is a compound word of “learning”(學) and “mastering”(習). We can acquire knowledge and information through studying. There are many ways to study. One of them is by reading books. Books contain the knowledge and information we need. Books contain insights that can help us grasp the flow of the future. Books stimulate our intellect. It enriches our emotions. It adds depth to our spirituality. Keep books close to you. Read and meditate on the Bible, the Book of Books. Don't stop reading. Enlightenment comes when you read and meditate. Wisdom comes. I am on a path of a lifelong study. I live in the joy of learning. There is a road in each book.

Third, be prepared through discipline. The path to excellence in any field lies in discipline. The path to being an excellent athlete, an excellent artist, an excellent designer, and an excellent leader lies in discipline. Discipline is for the future. Discipline is choosing pain first for a bright future. As Scott Peck said, “Discipline is choosing pain first and enjoying the pleasure later.” “Discipline is the capacity to delay gratification,” he said. The secret to training lies in continuity and repetition. It's not about repeating unconditionally, it's about repeating creatively. Creative repeating is repeating in the direction in which skills improves and develop. You can never achieve excellence by repeating wrong methods and wrong attitudes. Only creative repetition presents continuous development. It helps you move to a higher level.

Fourth, be prepared through your savings. Seizing opportunities requires resources. It requires intellectual, human, material, and spiritual resources. Resources are accumulated through savings. Saving is not for the purpose of accumulation. Saving is for seizing opportunity. To save money, you need to be thrifty. You should use less than your income. Saving doesn't just mean frugality. A wise investment should be included in your savings. God hates speculation. But He likes sound investing. A sound investment requires research. Also, after investing, you need to be patient and wait. Our church was able to purchase land to build the sanctuary because we saved a fifth of the church's finances each year. God's wisdom lies in preparing for the future. May you enjoy and share abundant blessings by preparing well for the future through wisdom.
