[목회서신] 깊은 상처가 생수의 우물이 됩니다. | Deep Wounds Become Wells of Living Water

     어버이 주일을 맞이하면 부모님의 사랑을 깊이 생각하게 됩니다. 우리를 낳으시고 길러주신 부모님의 삶에는 깊은 상처들이 담겨 있습니다. 자녀를 위해 흘린 눈물, 어려움을 홀로 견뎌낸 밤의 고독, 자녀를 위해 삼켜야 했던 수많은 감정들이 바로 그 상처 속에 담겨 있습니다. 상처를 좋아할 사람은 없습니다. 하지만 상처는 신비입니다. 우리가 그토록 싫어하는 상처가 생수의 우물이 될 수 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 종종 깊은 상처를 통해 깊은 우물을 파십니다.

우물은 아무 데서나 생기지 않습니다. 우물은 깊이 파인 자리에 생깁니다. 맑은 생수를 얻기 위해서는 땅속 깊이 들어가야 합니다. 제가 아는 한 선교사님의 사역은 선교지를 방문하여 우물을 파 주는 일입니다. 지역마다 다르지만, 맑은 생수를 얻기 위해서는 80m에서 150m까지 깊이 땅을 파야 합니다. 깊은 땅 속에서 맑은 생수를 얻게 됩니다. 깊이 땅을 판다는 것은, 깊은 상처를 감당하는 일과도 같습니다. 생수를 제공해 주는 우물이 되기 위해서는 몇 가지 조건이 필요합니다.

첫째, 우물은 깊이를 요구합니다. 생수는 얕은 곳에서 얻을 수 없습니다. 깊이 내려갈수록 더 맑은 생수를 얻게 됩니다. 깊은 상처를 통해 깊은 생수를 얻게 됩니다. 하나님은 생수의 근원이십니다. 하나님은 얕은 만남이 아니라 깊은 만남을 원하십니다.

둘째, 우물은 기다림을 필요로 합니다. 우물은 하루 아침에 만들어지지 않습니다. 깊은 곳에 있는 우물을 파기 위해서는 인내가 필요합니다. 또한 생수를 담는 우물을 만드는 일에도 시간이 필요합니다. 이 세상에 값없이 깊어지는 것은 없습니다. 무엇이든지 고귀한 것은 시간을 요구 합니다. 신앙의 깊이는 오랜 시간 속에서 형성됩니다.

셋째, 우물은 나눔을 전제로 합니다. 우물은 혼자 사용하기 위한 것이 아닙니다. 우물이 생기면 동네 전체가 함께 사용합니다. 학교에 우물을 파면 모든 학생이 생수를 마시게 됩니다. 그런 의미에서 우물은 만남의 장소이기도 합니다. 아브라함의 종 엘리에셀은 우물에서 리브가를 만났고, 야곱은 우물에서 라헬을 만났습니다. 예수님은 우물에서 사마리아 여인을 만나셨습니다.

넷째, 우물은 보이지 않는 곳에 있습니다. 우물은 깊은 땅속에 숨겨져 있습니다. 그래서 우물을 얻기 위해서는 깊이 땅을 파야 합니다. 가장 소중한 것은 깊은 곳에 있습니다. 그리고 대개 어둠 속에 감추어져 있습니다. 하나님은 보이지 않는 곳에서 일하십니다. 흑암 중에 보화를 감추어 두십니다(사 45:3).

남미에 있는 이과수 폭포는 세계에서 가장 웅장한 폭포 중 하나입니다. 이과수 폭포를 안내해 주신 분의 말이 제 가슴에 깊은 울림으로 남아 있습니다. “이과수 폭포는 지진 때문에 생긴 땅의 균열이 만들어 낸 작품입니다. 곧 깊은 상처로 인해 만들어진 것입니다.” 지각이 갈라지고, 땅이 내려앉고, 오랜 시간 물이 틈을 따라 흐르면서 오늘의 거대한 폭포가 되었습니다. 우리가 눈으로 보는 것은 물의 낙하입니다. 그러나 보이지 않는 곳에는 깊이 파인 상처의 지형이 있습니다. 지진은 땅을 무너뜨렸습니다. 동시에 새로운 물길을 열었습니다.

상처의 깊이가 아름다운 폭포를 만들어 냅니다. 상처가 깊을수록 물의 낙차는 커집니다. 낙차가 없는 곳에는 폭포가 없습니다. 깊이 패인 자리에서만 물은 떨어지고, 소리는 울리며, 생명은 퍼집니다. 깊은 상처가 은혜의 높이를 만듭니다. 폭포에서 물이 떨어지려면 높이와 깊이 사이의 차이가 필요합니다. 상처는 그 차이를 만들어 냅니다. 상처가 깊을수록, 하나님이 부어주시는 은혜의 낙차도 커집니다.

우리에게 깊은 생수를 선물해 주시는 분은 예수님이십니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 깊은 상처를 받으셨습니다. 그 상처에서 생수의 강이 흘러나왔습니다. 예수님은 구원의 우물이 되십니다. “그러므로 너희가 기쁨으로 구원의 우물들에서 물을 길으리로다”(사 12:3). 예수님께서 십자가에서 못박히셨을 때 로마 군인이 창으로 그분의 옆구리를 찔렀습니다. 예수님의 옆구리에서 흘러나온 것이 피와 물입니다(요 19:34). 그 생수는 말씀으로 우리를 새롭게 하시는 생수이며, 보혈로 우리를 대속하시는 생수이며, 성령으로 우리 영혼을 소생시키는 생수입니다. 예수님의 십자가는 인류 역사상 가장 깊은 상처였습니다. 그러나 그 상처에서 가장 큰 은혜가 흘러나왔습니다.

부모님의 눈물의 기도는 사라진 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 삶 깊은 곳에 우물이 되어 남아 있습니다. 우리가 누리는 사랑, 우리가 받은 풍성한 은혜, 우리가 살아가는 힘은 누군가의 상처에서 흘러나온 것입니다.

십자가는 가장 깊은 상처가 영광이 되는 자리입니다. 죽음이 생명이 되는 자리입니다. 저주가 축복이 되는 자리입니다. 가난이 부요가 되는 자리입니다. 절망이 소망이 되는 자리입니다. 우리는 십자가에서 흘러 나오는 생수를 마시는 사람입니다. 그러므로 감사하십시오. 그리고 기억하십시오. 당신의 상처도 누군가를 살리는 생수의 우물이 될 것입니다.

Deep Wounds Become Wells of Living Water

   As Parents’ Sunday approaches, I find myself reflecting deeply on the love of our parents. Hidden within the lives of those who gave us birth and raised us are profound wounds—tears shed for their children, lonely nights spent enduring hardships alone, and countless emotions silently swallowed for the sake of their family. No one welcomes wounds. Yet wounds are mysterious. The very wounds we wish to avoid can become wells of living water. God often digs deep wells through deep wounds.

A well does not appear just anywhere. A well is formed where the ground has been deeply pierced. To reach pure living water, one must go far beneath the surface. A missionary I know serves by traveling to mission fields to dig wells. Depending on the region, they must drill 80 to 150 meters deep to find clean water. Only in the depths of the earth can pure water be found. In many ways, digging deep into the ground resembles bearing deep wounds. There are several conditions required to become a well that provides living water.

First, a well requires depth. Living water cannot be found in shallow places. The deeper one goes, the purer the water becomes. Through deep wounds, we encounter deep living water. God is the source of living water. He desires not shallow encounters, but deep communion with us.

Second, a well requires waiting. A well is not formed overnight. Digging deep enough to reach water demands patience. Building a well capable of holding living water also takes time. Nothing precious in this world becomes deep without cost. Everything noble requires the passage of time. The depth of faith is formed over long seasons.

Third, a well is meant for sharing. A well is never meant for one person alone. Once a well is dug, the entire village drinks from it. If a well is built at a school, every student receives water from it. In that sense, a well is also a place of encounter. Abraham’s servant Eliezer met Rebekah at a well. Jacob met Rachel at a well. Jesus met the Samaritan woman at a well.

Fourth, a well exists in unseen places. Wells are hidden deep underground. Therefore, one must dig deeply to obtain them. The most precious things are found in hidden depths, often concealed in darkness. God works in unseen places. He hides treasures in darkness (Isaiah 45:3).

Iguazu Falls in South America is one of the most magnificent waterfalls in the world. Something a guide once told me there still echoes deeply in my heart: “Iguazu Falls is the result of cracks in the earth caused by earthquakes. In other words, it was born through deep wounds.” The earth’s crust split apart, the ground sank, and over long ages, water flowed through the fractures until it became the vast waterfall we see today. What we see with our eyes is water cascading downward. But hidden beneath it lies the geography of deep wounds. The earthquake shattered the land, yet at the same time it opened a new pathway for water.

The depth of a wound creates the beauty of a waterfall. The deeper the wound, the greater the drop of the water. Without a drop, there can be no waterfall. Only where the ground sinks deep does water fall, sound resound, and life spread. Deep wounds create the height of grace. For water to cascade, there must be a difference between height and depth. Wounds create that difference. The deeper the wound, the greater the outpouring of God’s grace.

The One who gives us deep living water is Jesus Christ. Jesus received deep wounds on the cross, and from those wounds flowed rivers of living water. Jesus became the well of salvation. “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation” (Isaiah 12:3). When Jesus was nailed to the cross, a Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear. From His side flowed blood and water (John 19:34). That living water renews us through His Word, redeems us through His precious blood, and revives our souls through the Holy Spirit. The cross of Jesus was the deepest wound in human history. Yet from that wound flowed the greatest grace.

The tearful prayers of our parents have not disappeared. They remain as wells deep within our lives. The love we enjoy, the abundant grace we have received, and the strength by which we live have all flowed from someone’s wounds.

The cross is the place where the deepest wound becomes glory. It is the place where death becomes life, where curse becomes blessing, where poverty becomes riches, and where despair becomes hope. We are people who drink from the living water flowing from the cross. Therefore, give thanks. And remember this: your wounds, too, can become wells of living water that bring life to others.
