[목회서신] 나의 태양은 다시 떠오른다! | My Sun Sets to Rise Again!

로버트 브라우닝은 “나의 태양은 다시 떠오른다.”라고 노래했습니다. 저는 “다시”라는 단어를 좋아합니다. “다시”라는 단어는 아직 끝나지 않았다는 것을 의미합니다. “다시”는 새로운 은혜를 의미합니다. 새로운 축복을 의미합니다. 새로운 미래를 의미합니다. 새로운 만남을 의미합니다. 며칠 전 스가랴서를 읽다가 “다시”라는 단어가 반복되는 것을 발견했습니다. “그가 다시 외쳐 이르기를 만군의 여호와의 말씀에 나의 성읍들이 넘치도록 다시 풍부할 것이라 여호와가 다시 시온을 위로하며 다시 예루살렘을 택하리라 하라 하니라”(슥 1:17). 한 절의 말씀 속에 “다시”라는 말이 네 번이나 나옵니다. 하나님은 한때 멸망했던 예루살렘 성읍을 다시 택하시고, 다시 위로하시고, 다시 번영케 해 주실 것을 약속하십니다. 하나님은 다시 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 분입니다.

다시 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 하나님은 소망의 하나님이십니다. “소망의 하나님이 모든 기쁨과 평강을 믿음 안에서 너희에게 충만하게 하사 성령의 능력으로 소망이 넘치게 하시기를 원하노라”(롬 15:13). 하나님은 우리에게 소망을 주시는 분입니다. 인간은 소망을 품고 살 때 가장 강력한 힘을 발휘할 수 있습니다. 현실이 아무리 어려워도 소망을 품을 때 우리는 아름다운 미래를 꿈꿀 수가 있습니다. 소망을 품을 때 우리는 미래가 들려주는 아름다운 음악을 들을 수 있습니다. 그 가락에 맞추어 춤출 수 있습니다. 루벰 알브즈는 “희망을 품는다는 건 미래가 들려주는 아름다운 선율에 귀 기울이는 것이다. 그리고 믿음을 품는다는 건 그 가락에 맞춰 춤추는 것이다.”라고 말했습니다.

다시 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 하나님은 회복의 하나님이십니다. 회복은 원래의 상태로 돌이키는 것을 의미합니다. 하나님의 은혜가 임할 때 황폐했던 예루살렘 성전과 예루살렘 성읍이 회복됩니다. 회복은 잃어버린 것을 다시 찾는 것을 의미합니다. 건강을 상실했다가 건강을 회복하게 되면 기쁨이 충만하게 됩니다. 실패했다가 다시 일어서서 성공하게 될 때 기쁨이 충만하게 됩니다. 갈등 때문에 결별했던 두 사람이 다시 아름다운 관계를 회복할 때 기쁨이 충만하게 됩니다. 우리는 어려운 일을 만나면 쉽게 낙심하게 됩니다. 좌절하고 절망하게 됩니다. 우리는 쉽게 자포자기하고 모든 것이 끝났다고 “마침표”를 찍어버립니다. 그런데 하나님의 은혜가 역사하면 우리가 찍은 “마침표”가 “쉼표”가 됩니다. 그 “쉼표”로부터 다시 새로운 미래가 전개됩니다. 하나님이 “쉼표”를 찍은 자리에 우리가 “마침표”를 찍지 않도록 조심해야 합니다. 제가 가슴에 품고 사는 명언 중에 유명한 야구 선수 요기 베라가 남긴 명언이 있습니다. “끝나기 전까지 끝난 것이 아니다.”

다시 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 하나님은 용서의 하나님이십니다. 예루살렘의 멸망은 이스라엘 백성의 죄 때문이었습니다. 그들의 음란한 죄와 우상숭배 때문에 예루살렘은 멸망했습니다. 죄는 파멸을 낳습니다. 죄는 우리를 노예로 만듭니다. 그래서 우리는 죄를 경계해야 합니다. 결코 죄를 쉽게 여겨서는 안 됩니다. 죄 때문에 이스라엘 백성은 바벨론에 포로로 끌려가게 되었습니다. 하지만 바벨론 포로 생활 70년이 지났을 때 하나님은 그들에게 긍휼을 베푸셔서 그들의 죄를 용서하십니다. 용서의 은혜는 가장 소중한 은혜입니다. 그 이유는 용서를 통해 우리는 새롭게 시작할 수 있기 때문입니다. 용서는 우리 과거의 죄와 허물을 사해 주는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리 죄를 용서하신 후에는 그 죄를 다시 기억하지 않으십니다. “내가 그들의 악행을 사하고 다시는 그 죄를 기억하지 아니하리라 여호와의 말씀이니라”(렘 31:34하).

용서한다는 것은 상대방의 죄를 다시 기억하지 않는다는 것입니다. 우리 인간은 전능하지 않기 때문에 상대방의 죄를 온전히 잊을 수는 없습니다. 하지만 전능하신 하나님은 약속하신 것처럼 우리 죄를 용서하시고, 우리 죄를 다시 기억하지 않으십니다. 용서한다는 것은 잊어주는 것입니다. 상대방의 허물을 십자가에 못 박아 버리는 것입니다. 용서가 있을 때 회복이 있습니다. 용서가 있을 때 새 출발이 있습니다. 그래서 용서의 은혜는 고귀한 은혜입니다. 하지만 예수님은 용서의 은혜를 베푸시기 위해 십자가에 못 박혀 돌아가셨습니다. 엄청난 대가를 지불하셨습니다. 용서의 은혜는 결코 값싼 은혜가 아닙니다. 하나님의 독생자를 희생할 만큼 값진 은혜입니다.

다시 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 하나님은 기도에 응답하시는 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 약속하신 것을 반드시 이루시는 신실하신 하나님이십니다. 하지만 그 약속을 우리의 기도를 통해 이루어 주십니다. “주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 그래도 이스라엘 족속이 이같이 자기들에게 이루어 주기를 내게 구하여야 할지라”(겔 36:37상). 하나님은 기도를 통해 은혜를 베풀어 주십니다. 기도는 하나님의 은혜의 보좌 앞에 나가서 하나님의 도움을 받는 것입니다. “그러므로 우리는 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라”(히 4:16). 우리 함께 새벽을 깨우며 은혜의 보좌 앞에 나아가 함께 기도합시다. 하나님은 기도의 사람들에게 다시 풍성한 은혜를 베풀어 주실 것입니다.

My Sun Sets to Rise Again!

"My Sun Sets to Rise Again," is a song that Robert Browning sang. I personally like the word “again”. The reason is because the word “again” means it is not over yet. “Again” means new grace. It means new blessings. It means a new future. It means meeting new people. A few days ago, while reading the book of Zechariah, I found that the word “again” was repeated. “Cry out again, Thus says the Lord of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem” (Zechariah 1:17). In this one verse, the word “again” appears four times. God promises to once again select the once-destroyed city of Jerusalem, once again comfort it, and once again make it prosperous, again. God is the one who grants the grace “again”.

The God who grants grace again is the God of hope. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13). God is the one who gives us hope. Human beings can exert the most powerful power when they live with hope. No matter how difficult the reality is, when we have hope, we can dream of a beautiful future. When we have hope, we can hear the beautiful music of the future. We can dance to that tune. Rubem Alves writes, “Hope is hearing the melody of the future, and faith is to dance to it.”

The God who grants grace again is the God of restoration. Restoration means returning to its original state. When God's grace comes, the ruined temple in Jerusalem and the city of Jerusalem will be restored. Restoration means finding back what was lost. If you lose your health and then recover it, you will be full of joy. When you fail and get back up and succeed, you will be full of joy. When two people who have been separated due to conflict recover their beautiful relationship again, they will be full of joy. We easily get discouraged when we encounter difficult things. We get frustrated and hopeless. We easily give up and place a “period” on it, as everything is over. However, when God's grace works, the “period” we have placed becomes a “comma”. A new future unfolds again from that “comma”. We must be careful not to put a “period” where God puts a “comma”. Among the quotes that live within my heart, there is a quote from the famous baseball player Yogi Berra. “It ain’t over until it’s over.”

The God who gives grace again is the God of forgiveness. The destruction of Jerusalem was because of the sins of the Israelites. Jerusalem was destroyed because of their immorality and idolatry. Sin brings destruction. Sin enslaves us. So we must guard against sin. We should never take sin lightly. Because of their sin, the Israelites were taken captive to Babylon. However, when the 70 years of captivity in Babylon passed, God had mercy on them and forgave their sins. The grace of forgiveness is the most precious grace. The reason is that forgiveness allows us to start anew. Forgiveness is the forgiveness of our past sins and transgressions. After God forgives our sins, he remembers them no more. “For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more” (Jeremiah 31:34b).

Forgiveness means not remembering the other person's sins again. Because we humans are not omnipotent, we cannot completely forget the other person's sins. But Almighty God, as he promised, forgives our sins and remembers them no more. To forgive is to forget. It is to nail the other person's transgressions to the cross. When there is forgiveness there is restoration. When there is forgiveness, there is a fresh start. So, the grace of forgiveness is a noble grace. However, Jesus died on the cross to grant the grace of forgiveness. He paid a heavy price. The grace of forgiveness is never cheap grace. It is such a precious grace to sacrifice the only begotten Son of God.

The God who grants grace again is the God who answers prayer. God is a faithful God who always fulfills what he promises. However, He fulfills that promise through our prayers. “Thus says the Lord God: This also I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them” (Ezekiel 36:37a). God grants grace through his prayers. Prayer is to go before the throne of God's grace and receive God's help. “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Let us awaken the dawn and go before the throne of grace and pray together. God will give abundant grace to those who pray again.
