Climb the Mountain of Meditation on God’s Word Each Day

Climb the Mountain of Meditation on God’s Word Each Day
When we climb a mountain, what we see begins to change. Things that seemed large from below appear small when viewed from above. And things that could not be seen from below become visible from higher ground. That is why, from time to time, we need to climb a mountain. There is also a mountain that our souls need to climb. It is the mountain of meditation on God’s Word. Thomas Watson encourages us to “climb the mountain of meditation.” When we climb the mountain of meditation, Christ comes more clearly into view. The promises of God loom larger before us. At the same time, the problems, worries, and fears that have troubled us begin to look smaller.
Meditation is reading God’s Word deeply. It is not rushing through Scripture. It is remaining before the Word long enough for the Word to pass through us. Meditation does not stop at storing the Word in our minds; it brings the Word down into our hearts. Memory is like a vessel that stores truth, while meditation is like the sense of taste that allows us to savor it. Memory is like the ark that held the manna; meditation is like actually eating the manna.
Meditation is eating the Word, the bread of life. No matter how good food may be, simply looking at it will never make it part of our bodies. We must chew it, swallow it, and digest it. The same is true of God’s Word. We need to think about what we have read, turn it over again in our minds, and meditate on it. And when we turn the Word we have meditated on into prayer, it becomes nourishment for our souls. David loved God’s Word. “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (Psalm 119:97). When we love the Word, we give it our deep attention and return to it again and again. When we love the Word, we remember it. We engrave it upon the tablets of our hearts.
David meditated on the Word all day because he loved the Word. Just as we often think about someone we love, when we love God’s Word, we naturally think about it often. There is wisdom in repetition when it comes to meditation. We do not understand everything simply because we have heard it once. Something does not truly become ours simply because we have read it once. The more important a word is, the more we need to read it repeatedly, think about it repeatedly, and speak it quietly to ourselves again and again.
A nail does not sink deeply into wood with a single blow of the hammer. It goes deep when it is struck again and again. Meditating on Scripture is like driving truth deep into our hearts. Memorization and meditation should go together. Memorization stores the Word in our hearts; meditation draws life from the Word we have stored there. The Word we memorize becomes a sword that the Holy Spirit can use when we need it (Ephesians 6:17). When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He overcame the devil’s temptations with the Word He had kept in His heart. The Word stored within us guards us in moments of temptation. It holds us steady in times of suffering. It raises us up again when we are discouraged.
Meditation also warms our emotions. We may know much of the Word and yet have a cold heart. That is why we need meditation. Meditation is like a furnace that sets the heart ablaze. David confessed, “My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned” (Psalm 39:3). Through meditation, the Word becomes a fire. Cold knowledge becomes warm love. The Word becomes praise. God’s promises become hope. Meditation also enriches our prayers. There are times when we kneel to pray and find that we have nothing to say. When that happens, begin by meditating on the Word. Read Scripture slowly. Hold on to a single verse. Then offer that Word back to God. Meditation opens the wellspring of prayer. Meditation is like oil that feeds the lamp of prayer. Meditation fills our hearts with holy thoughts, and prayer lifts those thoughts to God. When meditation goes ahead and opens the way, prayer follows behind.
I treasure my morning meditation. Morning is the firstfruits of the day. Giving the first moments of the day to God is like entrusting the entire day to Him. Morning is the golden hour of meditation. David confessed, “I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word” (Psalm 119:147). What we think about first in the morning matters. If we begin with negative thoughts, negativity can rule the day. If we begin by dwelling on our problems, our problems can rule the day. But when we begin with God’s Word, His Word governs our day.
Therefore, give the first thought of your day to God. Do not begin by trying to meditate on many passages. One verse is enough. Meditate deeply on one truth at a time. The purpose of meditation is not simply to accumulate many good thoughts. Its purpose is a transformed life. If meditation has warmed your heart, then live out that truth with a heart set aflame. Meditation is the life of devotion, and practice is the life of meditation. Climb the mountain of meditation on God’s Word each day. Meet the Lord there on the mountain. And when you come down from the mountain, come down carrying His Word in your heart. Come down carrying the fragrance of His Word. Come down having become a little more like Jesus.
