[목회서신] 내어 맡김의 기도 | The Prayer of Entrusting

     기도 가운데 “내어 맡김의 기도”가 있습니다. 내어 맡김의 기도는 하나님께 우리의 무거운 짐을 맡기는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리의 무거운 짐을 대신 담당해 주시길 원하십니다. 우리가 해야 할 일은 무거운 짐을 하나님께 가지고 나아가 맡기는 것입니다. 기도는 맡김입니다. 하나님은 우리가 맡긴 것만 책임져 주십니다. 우리가 맡기지 않은 것은 우리가 책임져야 합니다. 제가 배우고 깨닫고 경험한 “내어 맡김의 기도”에 대해 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 내어 맡김의 기도는 안식에 이르는 길입니다. 안식하기 위해서는 우리가 짊어진 무거운 짐을 내려놓을 수 있어야 합니다. 내어 맡김의 기도를 드리려면 먼저 내가 붙잡고 있는 무거운 짐이 무엇인지 인식해야 합니다. 인식하지 못하는 짐은 하나님께 맡길 수 없습니다. 가장 힘든 것은, 무거운 짐에 눌려 살면서도 정작 그 짐을 깨닫지 못하는 것입니다. 무거운 짐을 깨닫고 인정하는 순간, 우리는 비로소 하나님께 맡길 수 있게 됩니다. 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라”(마 11:28).

문제는 자신의 무거운 짐을 인정하는 것이 생각보다 쉽지 않다는 것입니다. 우리는 종종 문제를 감추고, 아무 문제가 없는 것처럼 살아갑니다. 그러다 어느 날, 우리가 감춘 그 문제가 곧 우리 자신이 되어 버립니다. 인정하지 않는 상처는 치유 받을 수 없고, 인정하지 않는 병은 고침 받을 수 없습니다. 낙타는 무거운 짐을 지고 걸어가지만, 저녁이 되면 짐을 내려놓고 안식합니다. 우리도 정기적으로 짐을 내려놓아야 안식이 가능합니다. 그래야 재충전할 수 있고, 심신이 회복됩니다. 하지만 총명하다는 인간은 오히려 짐을 내려놓지 못해 억눌린 채 살아갑니다. 날마다 예수님께 나아가 무거운 짐을 맡기십시오.

둘째, 내어 맡김의 기도는 신뢰입니다. 내어 맡김은 자포자기가 아닙니다. 내어 맡김은 하나님을 향한 전적인 신뢰입니다. 하나님이 약속하신 말씀에 대한 전적인 신뢰입니다. 가브리엘 천사는 마리아에게 놀라운 소식을 전했습니다. “보라 네가 잉태하여 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 예수라 하라”(눅 1:31). 마리아는 이해할 수 없었습니다. 처녀의 잉태는 불가능한 일이며, 율법적으로는 돌에 맞아 죽을 수도 있는 위험한 일이었습니다. 그러나 마리아는 자신의 생명을 하나님께 맡겼습니다. 하나님의 말씀에 자신을 내어 드렸습니다. “대저 하나님의 모든 말씀은 능하지 못하심이 없느니라 마리아가 이르되 주의 여종이오니 말씀대로 내게 이루어지이다”(눅 1:37–38). 마리아의 신뢰와 순종을 통해 구원의 역사가 성취되었습니다.

셋째, 내어 맡김의 기도는 자유에 이르는 길입니다. 집착은 우리를 노예로 만듭니다. 집착하면 반드시 염려가 따라옵니다. 물질이든 사람이든, 집착하면 염려하게 되고 결국 그 대상에게 소유당하는 슬픔을 경험합니다. 아브라함과 사라는 노년에 이삭을 얻었습니다. 그 아들은 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않을 만큼 귀한 아들이었습니다. 그러나 지나친 애착이 아브라함의 시야를 흐리게 만들었습니다. 하나님을 바라보지 못하고, 하나님과의 친밀한 교제를 상실했습니다. 그래서 하나님은 아브라함을 자유롭게 하시기 위해 그가 가장 사랑하는 이삭을 바치라고 명하셨습니다.

아브라함은 생애 가장 어려운 결단 앞에 서게 되었습니다. 성경에 기록되어 있지 않지만, 그는 분명 고뇌의 시간을 보냈을 것입니다. 사라와 함께 눈물로 밤을 지새웠을 것입니다. 기도로 씨름했을 것입니다. 그러나 결국 그는 이삭을 하나님께 내어 맡겼습니다. 그 순간 하나님은 이삭을 돌려주셨고, 그날 이후 아브라함은 자유인이 되었습니다. 그는 더 이상 이삭에 집착하지 않았습니다. 이삭의 안전을 두려워하지 않았습니다. 하나님께 이삭을 맡긴 순간, 아브라함은 참된 자유를 누리게 되었습니다.

넷째, 내어 맡김의 기도는 거룩한 기대입니다. 하나님께 내어 맡긴다는 것은 하나님이 개입할 수 있는 여백을 드리는 것입니다. 우리가 붙잡고 있던 것을 하나님께 맡기는 순간, 하나님이 일하기 시작합니다. 기도는 바통을 넘기는 것과 같습니다. 릴레이 경주에서 바통을 가진 사람은 뛰어야 하지만, 바통을 넘긴 후에는 받은 사람이 뛰기 시작합니다. 마찬가지로 바통을 쥐고 있을 때는 우리가 뛰어야 하지만, 바통을 하나님께 넘기는 순간 뛰시는 분은 하나님이십니다. 우리가 무엇이든 기도를 통해 하나님께 맡기면 하나님이 일하기 시작하십니다. 우리가 해야 할 일은 단 하나입니다. 하나님께 맡긴 기도 제목을 하나님께서 어떻게 이루어 가시는지 인내하며 바라보는 것입니다. 거룩한 기대를 품고 기다리는 것입니다.

다섯째, 내어 맡김의 기도는 비움과 채움의 기도입니다. 하나님께 내어 맡긴 손은 빈손이 됩니다. 하나님은 그 빈손에 큰 복을 부어 주십니다. 사르밧 과부는 아들과 함께 먹고 죽으려고 했던, 마지막 떡을 엘리야의 손에 내어 맡겼습니다. 그때 하나님은 그녀의 빈손에 3년 6개월 동안 떨어지지 않는 음식을 공급해 주셨습니다. 저는 2009년에 제가 섬기던 교회를 내려놓고 빈손으로 떠났습니다. 어떤 조건도 없이 모든 것을 맡기고 떠났습니다. 그런데 하나님은 제 빈손에 새생명비전교회 성도님들을 맡겨 주셨습니다. 큰 은혜와 큰 복을 부어 주셨습니다. 비움이 있을 때 채움이 있습니다. 내어 맡김의 기도는 씨앗을 심는 기도입니다. 기도로 심은 씨앗은 때가 되면 반드시 결실합니다. 내어 맡김의 기도를 통해 하나님의 풍성한 은혜를 경험하시길 빕니다.

The Prayer of Entrusting

   Among the many forms of prayer, there is what I call “the prayer of entrusting.” This is the prayer in which we place our heavy burdens into God’s hands. God desires to bear our burdens for us. Our part is simple: we bring our burdens before Him and entrust them to Him. Prayer is entrusting. God takes responsibility only for what we entrust to Him; what we do not entrust remains ours to carry. I would like to share what I have learned, discovered, and experienced about this “prayer of entrusting.”

First, the prayer of entrusting is the pathway to rest. To enter God’s rest, we must be willing to lay down the heavy loads we carry. To pray a prayer of entrusting, we must first recognize the burdens we are holding onto. We cannot entrust a burden we do not recognize. The most difficult situation is when we live under the weight of burdens yet fail to discern what they are. The moment we acknowledge our heavy burdens, we are finally able to entrust them to God. Jesus invites us, saying, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

The challenge is that acknowledging our burdens is often harder than we think. We frequently hide our struggles and live as though everything is fine. Over time, the very issues we hide become woven into our identity. Wounds we refuse to acknowledge cannot be healed. Illnesses we do not admit cannot be treated. A camel carries heavy loads throughout the day, yet when evening comes, it lays them down and rests. In the same way, we must regularly lay down our burdens to experience rest, renewal, and restoration. Yet human beings—who pride themselves on wisdom—often continue to carry their loads and live under oppression. Go to Jesus daily and entrust your burdens to Him.

Second, the prayer of entrusting is an expression of trust. Entrusting is not self-abandonment. Entrusting is complete trust in God—complete trust in the promises He has given. The angel Gabriel delivered astonishing news to Mary: “You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus” (Luke 1:31). Mary could not fully understand. The virgin conception was impossible by human reason and dangerous according to the Law—she could even be stoned. Yet Mary entrusted her very life to God. She surrendered herself to God’s word. Gabriel declared, “For nothing is impossible with God.” Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said” (Luke 1:37–38). Through Mary’s trust and obedience, God’s saving work unfolded.

Third, the prayer of entrusting is the pathway to freedom. Over-attachment enslaves us. Wherever there is over-attachment, anxiety inevitably follows. Whether toward possessions or people, excessive attachment leads us to worry, and eventually we feel owned by the very thing we cling to. Abraham and Sarah received Isaac in their old age—a precious gift beyond measure. Yet their deep attachment began to cloud Abraham’s sight. He no longer looked to God or enjoyed intimate fellowship with Him. So God commanded Abraham to offer Isaac—not to harm him but to set Abraham free.

Scripture does not describe Abraham’s emotional turmoil, but surely he must have endured sleepless nights, tears, and wrestling prayer. Eventually, Abraham entrusted Isaac fully to God. At that moment, God returned Isaac to him, and Abraham became a free man. He no longer clung to Isaac. He no longer feared losing him. When Abraham entrusted Isaac to God, he found true freedom.

Fourth, the prayer of entrusting is a holy expectation. To entrust something to God is to give Him space to intervene. The moment we release what we have been holding, God begins to work. Prayer is like passing a baton. In a relay race, the one holding the baton must run—but once he passes it, the runner who receives it begins to run. Likewise, while the baton is in our hands, we bear the burden, but once we hand it to God, God Himself begins to act. Whatever we entrust to God in prayer becomes something God takes into His hands. Our task then is simple: to watch patiently and expectantly for how God will fulfill what we entrusted to Him. We wait with holy anticipation.

Fifth, the prayer of entrusting is the prayer of emptying and filling. The hands that entrust become empty hands. And it is into empty hands that God pours great blessing. The widow of Zarephath entrusted her last bit of flour and oil—the food she and her son planned to eat before dying—into Elijah’s hands. And God filled her emptiness with unceasing provision for three and a half years. In 2009, I left the church I had been serving and walked away with empty hands—entrusting everything without conditions. Yet God placed the beloved members of New Life Vision Church into my empty hands. He poured out abundant grace and blessing. Where there is emptying, there can be filling. The prayer of entrusting is like sowing seeds. Seeds sown in prayer will, in God’s appointed time, surely bear fruit. May you experience the abundant grace of God through the prayer of entrusting.
