대림절(待臨節)이 지난 주일에 시작되었습니다. 대림절은 크리스마스로부터 4주 전, 첫 주일에 시작되어 12월 24일에 끝납니다. 대림절은 영어로 “Advent(도래, 출현)”입니다. 이 말은 “오다(Adventus)”라는 뜻의 라틴어에서 유래되었습니다. 대림절은 예수님이 이 땅에 오심을 기다리는 절기입니다. 교회력이 대림절로부터 시작되기 때문에, 교회력 상으로는 한 해의 시작을 알리는 뜻도 포함되어 있습니다. 대림절이란 말 대신에 강림절(降臨節)로 표현하기도 합니다.

대림(待臨)은 “기다릴” 대(待)와 “임할” 림(臨)의 합성어입니다. 대림이란 예수님의 강림하심을 기다리는 것을 의미합니다. 강림(降臨)은 “내릴” 강(降)에 “임할” 림(臨)의 합성어입니다. 하나님이 인간 세계에 내려오심을 의미합니다. 우리 구주 예수님이 높은 곳에서 낮은 데로 내려오심을 의미합니다. 대림절이라는 말이 예수님의 오심을 “기다림”에 초점을 맞춘다면, 강림절은 예수님이 육신의 몸을 입고 이 땅에 “내려오심”에 초점을 맞춘다고 이해하면 좋겠습니다.

대림절은 기대하며 기다리는 절기입니다. 2020년 전에 이 땅에 오신 예수님의 성탄을 기다리는 절기입니다. 영성 훈련에서 아주 중요한 것이 기다림입니다. 기다림은 동경(憧憬)입니다. 동경이란 어떤 대상을 그리워하며 간절히 그를 생각하는 것을 의미합니다. 인생은 동경입니다. 동경은 그리움입니다. 갈망입니다. 기다림입니다. 우리만 기다리는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님도 기다리십니다(사 30:18). 하나님은 예수님을 이 땅에 보내시기 위해 오랫동안 기다리셨습니다. 하나님은 서두르지 않으십니다. 때가 찼을 때 예수님을 이 땅에 보내셨습니다(갈 4:4). 우리는 성탄을 기다리며, 기다림의 중요성과 기다리는 법을 배워야 합니다.

때로는 빠른 속도가 필요합니다. 위급한 환자를 돌볼 때는 속도가 중요합니다. 위기 상황에 대처할 때도 속도가 중요합니다. 속도 경쟁 속에 살아가는 이 세상에서 속도를 무시할 수 없습니다. 하지만 여전히 우리는 기다림의 중요성을 깊이 깨달아야 합니다. 성경은 오래 기다리며 인내하는 성품을 높이 평가합니다. 야고보는 “인내를 온전히 이루라 이는 너희로 온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라”(약 1:4)라고 말씀합니다. 바울은 사랑이란 “오래 참고”, “모든 것을 참으며”, “모든 것을 믿으며”, “모든 것을 바라며”, 그리고 “모든 것을 견디는 것”(고전 13:4, 7)이라고 정의합니다. 어떤 면에서 기다림은 고통입니다. 하지만 기다림의 고통은 기대에 찬 고통입니다. 소망에 찬 고통입니다. 아름다운 결과와 풍성한 열매를 기대하며 기다리는 고통입니다.

우리는 누가복음 1장과 2장에서 기다리는 사람들을 만납니다. 사가랴와 엘리사벳은 기도하며 기다리는 중에 예수님의 길을 예비할 세례 요한을 낳습니다. 마리아는 가브리엘 천사가 전해준 말씀을 듣고 기다리는 중에 예수님을 낳습니다. 시므온은 이스라엘의 위로를 기다렸던 사람입니다(눅 2:25). 그는 기다리는 중에 이스라엘의 위로가 되시는 예수님을 만나게 됩니다. 안나는 일찍 과부가 되어 84세가 되기까지 성전에 머물며 기도하며 그리스도를 기다렸습니다(눅 2:36-38). 안나는 기다리는 중에 예수님을 만났습니다. 기다리면 만나게 됩니다. 기다리면 보게 됩니다. 그렇다면 어떻게 기다리는 것이 좋을까요? 기다림은 영적 훈련이며 삶의 예술입니다.

첫째, 하나님의 약속을 붙잡고 기다리십시오. 아브라함은 하나님의 약속을 붙잡고 오래 참고 기다리는 중에 이삭을 얻게 됩니다(히 6:13-15). 둘째, 기도하며 기다리십시오. 하나님은 우리가 기도하면서 기다리길 원하십니다. 우리가 기도하며 기다릴 때 하나님이 우리를 대신해서 일하십니다. 셋째, 하나님을 전적으로 신뢰하며 기다리십시오. 기다리는 중에 찾아오는 의심을 물리치고 하나님을 온전히 신뢰하는 중에 기다리십시오. 넷째, 준비하며 기다리십시오. 아이를 잉태하고 기다리는 부모는 아이가 태어나면 필요한 것들을 미리 준비합니다. 하나님의 지혜는 다가올 미래를 준비하는 것입니다. 기회는 준비된 사람에게 먼저 찾아옵니다.

기다림은 낭비가 아닙니다. 기다림이 수동태 같아 보이지만 수동태처럼 보이는 능동태입니다. 왜냐하면 기다리는 동안에 씨앗이 자라고 꽃이 피고 열매를 맺기 때문입니다. 산모가 기다리는 동안에 아이가 자라기 때문입니다. 하나님의 기다리심은 우리에게 은혜를 베풀어 주시기 위함입니다. 복을 주시기 위함입니다. 이사야는 “그를 기다리는 자마다 복이 있도다”(사 30:18)라고 말씀합니다. 기다리면 복을 받습니다. 기다리면 길이 열립니다. 기다리면 성령님의 능력을 받게 됩니다(행 1:4).

거룩한 기대를 가지고 기다림의 시간을 갖도록 합시다. 예수님이 태어나실 때 세상은 혼돈과 흑암과 공허 속에 있었습니다. 하지만 예수님이 이 땅에 오심으로 혼돈은 질서로 흑암은 빛으로 공허는 충만으로 변했습니다. 하나님을 신뢰하며 기다리는 중에 하나님이 예비하신 풍성한 복을 받아 누리시길 빕니다.

The Blessings of Those Who Are Waiting

Advent (待臨節) began last Sunday. Advent starts four weeks before Christmas. It begins on the first Sunday of December and ends on 24th. The word ‘advent’ comes from the Latin word for “coming(adventus)”. Advent is the feast of waiting for Jesus to come to earth. Since the ecclesial calendar begins with Advent, it is also seen as a sign to be the beginning of the ecclesial year. Advent is also sometimes referred to as the Day of Coming.

The Chinese characters for the word Advent (待臨) is composed with “to wait” (待) and “to present” (臨). Advent means to wait for the coming of Jesus. Another formation of Chinese characters for Advent (降臨) is composed with “downward” (降) and “to have presence” (臨). It means that God came down to the human world. It means that our Savior Jesus came down, from the high place to a low place. One focuses on the “waiting” of Jesus' coming, and the other focuses on the “coming down” of Jesus to this earth in a physical body.

Advent is a season of anticipation and waiting. It is the season to wait for the Christmas of Jesus, who came to this earth 2020 years ago. Waiting is a very important thing in spiritual discipline. Waiting is longing. Longing means longing for someone and thinking about him earnestly. Life is longing. Longing is yearning. It is desiring. It is waiting. We are not only those who are waiting. God is also waiting (Isaiah 30:18). God has been waiting for a long time to send Jesus down to this earth. God is not in a hurry. When the time had fully come, God sent Jesus to this earth (Galatians 4:4). While waiting for Christmas, we must learn the importance of waiting and how to wait.

Sometimes we need speed. When caring for an emergency patient, speed is important. Speed ​​is also important when dealing with crisis situations. In this world of speed competitions, speed cannot be ignored. But we still have to deeply realize the importance of waiting. The Bible values ​​the nature of waiting and patience. James says, “Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:4). Paul defines love as “to be patient”, “to bear all things”, “to believe all things”, “to hope all things”, and “to endure all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7). In some ways, waiting is painful. But the pain of waiting is the pain of full anticipation. It is hopeful pain. It is the pain that waits in anticipation of beautiful results and abundant fruit.

We meet those who are waiting in Luke chapters 1 and 2. Zechariah and Elizabeth, while praying and waiting, gave birth to John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus. Mary gave birth to Jesus while waiting after hearing the words given to her by the angel Gabriel. Simeon was the person who waited for Israel's consolation (Luke 2:25). While he was waiting, he met Jesus, the consolation of Israel. Anna became a widow early in her life and stayed in the temple until she turned 84, praying and waiting for Christ Jesus (Luke 2:36-38). Anna met Jesus while she waited. If you wait you will have encounters. When you wait, you will see. If so, what is a good way to wait? Waiting is a spiritual discipline and an art of life.

First, hold on to God's promise and wait. Abraham held on to God's promise and waited patiently to have Isaac (Hebrews 6:13-15). Second, pray and wait. God wants us to wait as we pray. When we pray and wait, God works on our behalf. Third, wait with full trust in God. Resist the doubts that come while you wait, and wait while you trust God completely. Fourth, be prepared and wait. Parents who conceive and wait for their child’s birth prepare the necessary things in advance. God's wisdom is to prepare for the future to come. Opportunities come first to those who are prepared.

Waiting is not a waste. Waiting looks passive, but it is an active action that only looks passive. This is because the seeds grow, bloom, and bear fruits as we wait. This is because the child grows in the womb while the mother waits. God's waiting to show us grace. He waits to give blessings. Isaiah says, “Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18). If you wait, you will be blessed. If you wait, the path will open. If you wait, you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4).

Let's take this time of waiting with holy expectations. When Jesus was born, the world was in chaos, in darkness, and in emptiness. But when Jesus came to this earth, chaos turned into order, darkness turned into light, and emptiness turned into fullness. I pray that you will receive and enjoy the abundant blessings that God has prepared for you while you trust in God and wait.
