| Start Over for a Better Future!

Start Over for a Better Future!

It's a beautiful thing to start over. But starting over is not necessarily a good thing. Some people who start over make mistakes or repeat their failures. If you have the same thoughts, the same attitude, and the same words as before, you will end up with the same results. If you anticipate different results from before, you must live differently than before. I am longing for a life different from the past. I live desiring not to repeat the same mistakes. There is something to pray for, for a better future. Praying doesn't end with prayer, it involves seeking and taking action for what you prayed for.

First, pray for more wisdom for a better future. The Bible says that those who find wisdom are blessed. It teaches that wisdom is more precious than pearls. “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her” (Proverbs 3:13–15). As Jesus grew, he grew in wisdom and he was full of wisdom (Luke 2:40, 52). The way to gain wisdom is to realize its importance. The way to gain wisdom is to ask God, who is the source of wisdom (James 1:5). It is to read the Bible, the textbook of wisdom, and putting into practice what you have understood (Matthew 7:24). You can also gain wisdom by walking with a wise person (Proverbs 13:20).

Second, pray for more good encounters for a better future. Life is full of encounters. Good encounters lead to good results, and bad encounters to bad results. Many of our problems start with bad encounters. It is not reasonable to anticipate a good future while continuing bad encounters. Wisdom is in discernment. Wisdom is in the discernment between those with whom to have fellowship with and those with whom to avoid. Encounters with those who respect us and acknowledge the value of our existence are good encounters. Encounters with those who acknowledge the potential within us and help develop it are good encounters. Encounters with those who help you do better when things go well and help you overcome difficulties when things are difficult are good encounters. Encounters with those who comfort you and hold your hands in difficult times are good encounters. On the other hand, encounters with those who ridicule us and ruin our lives are bad encounters. You can live a better life when you avoid bad encounters and cultivate good ones.

Third, pray for a better attitude for a better future. The attitude you have towards work is more important than the actual work. A person with a good attitude appreciates the work entrusted to him. He loves the work entrusted to him. He finds treasures in the work entrusted to him. A negative attitude will not help you have a better future. On the other hand, a positive attitude will help you have a better future. Attitude is expressed in how we interpret and respond to hardship or adversity. Gordon Livingston said, "You cannot choose the pain that will come, but you can choose the attitudes toward it." Viktor Frankl said, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedom to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” A valued attitude we must cultivate is an attitude of gratitude. Daphne Rose Kingma said, “In relation to others, gratitude is good manners: in relation to ourselves, it is a habit of the heart and a spiritual discipline.”

Fourth, pray for a better character for a better future. People are like icebergs. There's more to them than it seems on the outside. Only about 15% of an iceberg is visible above water. One thing that is similar to an iceberg is one’s talent. On the other hand, what is hidden is character. When you meet someone for the first time, their talent catches your eyes rather than their character. However, over time, their character, not their talent, becomes visible. Just like attitudes, there are good characters and there are bad characters.

Talent and competence are important, but it is good character that sustains them. God wants us to form good character like Jesus. The reason is that good character is essential for a better future. No matter how excellent someone’s talent is, if their character does not follow, their talent cannot shine. Quite a few of the troublemakers in this world are exceptionally gifted. Unfortunately, they became troublemakers by not cultivating good character. Good character protects our talents, our successes and achievements. Especially a humble character is like a safe vessel for God's blessings. John Maxwell says, “Character protects talent and prevents regret.” Character must be continuously developed. Character is formed through good habits. That is why we must cultivate good habits for a better future. God wants us not just to start over but start over for a better future. May you create a better future through better wisdom, better encounters, better attitudes and better character.
