[목회서신] 마음을 지키고 가꿀 줄 아는 지혜 | The Wisdom of Keeping and Cultivating the Heart

마음은 보이지 않지만 보이는 것보다 소중합니다. 소중한 것은 겉으로 드러나지 않고 감추어져 있습니다. 모든 것은 보이지 않는 마음에서 시작됩니다. 그래서 마음을 지키고 가꾸는 것이 지혜입니다. 잠언은 “모든 지킬 만한 것 중에 더욱 네 마음을 지키라 생명의 근원이 이에서 남이니라”(잠 4:23)고 말씀합니다. 마음을 지켜야 하는 이유는 마음속에 생명의 샘이 흘러나오기 때문입니다. 현대인의 성경은 “생명의 근원”을 “생명의 샘”이라고 번역했습니다. 마음속에는 생명의 샘이 감추어져 있습니다. 마음속에 감추인 생명의 샘을 모르는 사람은 생명의 샘을 마실 수가 없습니다.

마음을 지키기 위해서는 마음의 소중함을 알아야 합니다. 우리는 아무것이나 지키지 않습니다. 쓸모없는 것은 지키지 않습니다. 쓰레기를 지키는 사람은 어리석은 사람입니다. 우리는 소중하다고 여기는 것을 지킵니다. 가치있는 것을 지킵니다. 지킨다는 것은 관심을 갖는 것입니다. 주의를 기울이는 것입니다. 함부로 다루지 않는 것입니다. 우리는 자녀를 지킵니다. 가정을 지킵니다. 우정을 지킵니다. 건강을 지킵니다. 그리스도인들은 교회를 지킵니다. 나라와 민족을 사랑하는 사람들은 나라와 민족을 지키기 위해 헌신합니다. 바울은 일평생 동안 믿음을 지켰습니다. “나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니”(딤후 4:7). 무엇을 소중히 여기는 가를 보면 그 사람의 가치관을 알 수 있습니다.

눈으로 볼 수 없는 것을 마음으로 볼 때 잘 볼 수 있습니다. 생텍쥐베리의 《어린 왕자》에 나오는 글입니다. “그럼 비밀을 가르쳐줄게. 아주 간단한 거야. 오직 마음으로 보아야 잘 보인다는 거야. 가장 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않아.” 마음에 눈이 있습니다. 마음의 눈으로 잘 보기 위해서는 마음을 정결케 해야 합니다. 마음의 눈은 창과 같아서 더러워지면 잘 볼 수 없습니다. 마음의 눈을 닦는 것이 회개의 눈물입니다. 눈물은 천상에서 흘러 내려오는 하늘의 생수입니다. 우리가 눈물을 흘릴 때 우리 마음의 창이 깨끗해집니다. 우리에게 필요한 것은 눈물입니다. 눈물이 마음을 적실 때 우리 마음은 정결케 됩니다.

마음은 정원처럼 가꾸어야 합니다. 마음은 잘 지킬 뿐만 아니라 정원처럼 잘 가꾸어야 합니다. 스티븐 코비는 “정원사가 없는 정원은 없다.”라고 말했습니다. 정원사가 없는 정원은 잡초로 무성하게 됩니다. 잡초는 가꾸지 않아도 잘 자랍니다. 하지만 화초는 잘 가꾸어야 아름답게 자랍니다. 마음은 정원과 같아서 어떤 씨앗을 심느냐에 따라 달라집니다. 우리는 나쁜 씨앗을 심지 않도록 주의해야 합니다. 나쁜 씨앗을 심으면 나쁜 열매를 맺게 되고, 좋은 씨앗을 심으면 좋은 열매를 맺게 됩니다. 마음은 땅처럼 정직합니다. 심은 씨앗의 종류와 씨앗의 양을 따라 열매를 맺도록 도와줍니다. 우리 마음에 심어야 할 씨앗은 말씀의 씨앗입니다.

말씀의 씨앗을 마음에 심고 기도와 묵상으로 말씀의 씨앗을 잘 가꾸도록 하십시오. 말씀의 씨앗을 마음의 정원에 심을 때 좋은 생각으로 충만하게 됩니다. 좋은 언어로 충만하게 됩니다. 예수님은 우리 마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말한다고 말씀하십니다. “선한 사람은 마음에 쌓은 선에서 선을 내고 악한 자는 그 쌓은 악에서 악을 내나니 이는 마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말함이니라”(눅 6:45). 말씀의 씨앗을 심기 위해서는 날마다 성경을 읽어야 합니다. 성경을 읽는 중에 깨달은 말씀을 붙잡고 하루 종일 그 말씀을 묵상하며 기도하십시오. 그때 말씀은 머리에서 가슴으로 내려오게 됩니다. 가슴으로 내려온 말씀은 마음에 깊이 새겨지게 됩니다. 마음에 새겨진 말씀은 우리 영혼을 지켜줍니다. 우리 영혼을 부요케 합니다. 진정한 부요는 영혼의 부요입니다.

마음의 정원을 가꾸기 위해서는 날마다 잠시 멈추는 시간을 가져야 합니다. 분주하고 산만한 사람은 마음의 정원을 잘 가꾸기가 어렵습니다. 반면에 잠시 멈출 줄 알고 집중할 줄 아는 사람은 마음의 정원을 잘 가꿀 수 있습니다. 마음의 정원을 잘 가꾼다는 것은 고요한 마음을 가꾼다는 것을 의미합니다. 고요한 마음은 고요한 행복을 낳습니다. 고요한 마음은 침묵을 통해 가꿀 수 있습니다. 소음으로 가득 찬 세상에서 고요한 마음을 가꾸는 길은 침묵의 시간을 갖는 것입니다. 침묵하면 우리 마음이 고요해집니다. 우리 마음이 고요해지면 고요한 호수처럼 우리 마음은 맑고 밝아집니다. 우리 마음이 고요해지면 하나님의 음성을 잘 들을 수 있습니다. 다른 사람이 볼 수 없는 것을 보게 되고, 느낄 수 없는 것을 느끼게 됩니다. 깨달을 수 없는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

늘 서두르는 사람은 두려움에 쫓기게 됩니다. 속도란 두려움 때문에 생깁니다. 두려움에 사로잡히면 멈출 줄 모릅니다. 두려움 때문에 전쟁을 일으킨 사람은 두려움 때문에 전쟁을 멈추지 못합니다. 잠시 멈추어 말씀을 읽고 묵상하며 기도하십시오. 잠시 멈추어 하나님을 바라보십시오. 잠시 멈추어 마음을 고요한 마음을 가꾸십시오. 고요한 마음을 가꾸어 만나는 사람들에게 고요함을 선물해 주십시오. 시끄러운 세상에서 고요함은 보배로운 선물입니다.

The Wisdom of Keeping and Cultivating the Heart

You cannot see what’s in the heart, but it is more precious than what is visible. Things that are precious are hidden, and not revealed. It all starts with the invisible heart. Therefore, it is wise to keep and cultivate the heart. The proverb says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23). The reason we must keep our hearts is because the fountain of life flows out of our hearts. In the heart the spring of life is hidden. Those who do not know the hidden spring of life cannot drink from it.

To keep your heart, you need to know the value of your heart. We don't keep anything. We don't keep useless things. Anyone who keeps trash is a fool. We keep what we cherish. We keep what is valuable. To keep is to have interests. It's about paying attention. It's not to be taken lightly. We protect our children. We keep our family. We keep our friendship. We keep our health. Christians keep the church. Those who love their country and those who defend their country devote themselves.. Paul kept the faith all his life. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). You can tell a person's values by looking at what they cherish.

When you see invisible things with your heart, you can see rightly. This is from Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince. “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” We have eyes in our hearts. In order to see rightly with the eyes of the heart, the heart must be purified. The eye of the heart is like a window; when it gets dirty, we cannot see rightly. What wipes the eyes of the heart is tears of repentance. Tears are the living water of heaven that flows down from heaven. When we shed tears, the windows of our hearts are cleared. All we need is tears. When tears wet our hearts, our hearts are purified.

We must cultivate our hearts like a garden. Not only must the heart be well kept, but it must also be cultivated like a garden. Stephen Covey said, "If there is no gardener, there is no garden." A garden without a gardener will be filled with weeds. Weeds grow well even without care. But flowers need to be well cared for to grow beautifully. The heart is like a garden, and the garden changes depending on what kind of seeds are planted. We must be careful not to plant bad seeds. If you sow bad seeds, you will produce bad fruit, and if you sow good seeds, you will produce good fruit. The heart is as honest as the earth. It helps to bear fruit according to the type the amount of seed planted are. The seed to be planted in our hearts is the seed of the Word.

Sow the seeds of the Word in your heart and cultivate them through prayer and meditation. When you plant the seeds of the Word in the garden of your heart, you will be filled with good thoughts. You will be filled with good language. Jesus says that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). To plant the seeds of the Word, we must read the Bible every day. Hold on to the word you realized while reading the Bible and meditate on it all day and pray. Then the word will come down from your head to your heart. The words that come down to your heart are deeply engraved in your heart. The words engraved in our hearts protect our souls. It enriches our souls. True wealth is the wealth of the soul.

To cultivate the garden of your heart, you need to take a moment to pause every day. It is difficult for a busy and distracted person to take good care of the garden of the heart. On the other hand, a person who can pause and concentrate can take care of the garden of the heart. Taking good care of the garden of the heart means cultivating a quiet heart. A quiet heart breeds quiet happiness. A quiet heart can be cultivated through silence. In a world full of noise, the way to cultivate a calm heart is to have a time of silence. Silence quiets our hearts. When our heart is calm, our heart becomes clear and bright like a calm lake. When our hearts are calm, we can hear God's voice well. We can see things that no one else can see, and we can feel things that no one else can feel. We realize what we can't understand.

Those who are always in a hurry are driven by fear. Speed comes from fear. When you get caught up in fear, you can't stop. Those who start wars out of fear cannot stop wars because of fear. Pause for a moment to read the Word, meditate on it, and pray. Pause for a moment and look to God. Pause for a moment and cultivate a calm heart. Cultivate a quiet heart and give the gift of stillness to the people you meet. In a noisy world, stillness is a precious gift.
