[목회서신] 멋진 삶은 멋진 곳에 있지 않습니다. | A Wonderful Life Is not Found In Wonderful Places

예수님이 태어나신 곳은 구유입니다. 멋진 곳이 아닙니다. 가장 아름다우신 예수님이 태어나신 곳은 결코 멋진 곳이 아닙니다. “첫아들을 낳아 강보로 싸서 구유에 뉘었으니 이는 여관에 있을 곳이 없음이러라”(눅 2:7). 우리는 멋진 곳을 좋아하고, 멋진 삶을 꿈꾸며 삽니다. 그런데 멋진 삶을 위해서는 먼저 초라한 곳을 선택할 줄 알아야 합니다. 하나님은 흑암 속에 보화를 감추어 두시는 분입니다. “네게 흑암 중의 보화와 은밀한 곳에 숨은 재물을 주어 네 이름을 부르는 자가 나 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님인 줄을 네가 알게 하리라”(사 45:3).

우리가 추구하는 멋진 삶은 어떤 삶을 의미하는 것일까요? 어려운 질문입니다. 우리가 꿈꾸는 멋진 삶에 대한 이미지는 어떤 이미지일까요? 사람마다 다를 것입니다. 예수님은 정말 멋진 삶을 사셨습니다. 천국 복음을 전하시고, 소외된 사람들을 돌보아 주셨습니다. 많은 병자를 고쳐주셨습니다. 귀신 들린 사람을 고쳐 주셨습니다. 예수님은 마귀에 눌린 자를 자유케 해 주셨고, 고통 중에 있는 자를 치유해 주셨습니다.

예수님이 돌보아 주신 사람들이 살던 곳은 멋진 곳이 아니었습니다. 나병환자들은 격리되어 살았습니다. 건강한 사람들이 사는 경계선에 살았습니다. 그 당시 구걸하던 사람들 중에는 장애인이 많았습니다. 그들은 가족들에게까지 버림받았습니다. 그런데 예수님은 버림받은 그들이 사는 곳에 찾아가셔서 멋진 일을 행하셨습니다. 그들을 고쳐주시고, 그들 안에 있는 무한한 잠재력을 회복시켜 주셨습니다. 그들이 멋진 삶을 살도록 도와주셨습니다.

우리는 젊은 시절부터 멋진 일을 갈망합니다. 멋진 삶을 살기 위해 멋진 곳을 동경합니다. 하지만 정말 멋진 삶은 멋진 곳에서 발견할 수 없습니다. 요셉의 멋진 삶은 그의 형제들이 집어넣은 구덩이에서 시작되었습니다. 그가 종살이하던 보디발의 집은 결코 멋진 곳이 아니었습니다. 보디발의 아내의 유혹을 물리친 대가로 들어간 감옥은 결코 멋진 곳이 아니었습니다. 그런데 바로 그곳에 하나님이 함께하셨습니다. 하나님이 요셉을 위해 예비한 사람들이 있었습니다.

저는 대학 3학년을 마치고 군대에 입대하면서 멋진 일을 꿈꾸었습니다. 그런데 제가 군대에 입대해서 처음 일을 시작한 곳은 취사장이었습니다. 저는 취사병으로 군대 생활을 시작했습니다. 하얀 모자를 쓰고, 동태를 다듬고, 약간 이상한 냄새가 나는 생선묵을 요리했습니다. 오해하지 마십시오. 제가 결코 취사병을 폄하하는 것이 아닙니다. 요리하는 것을 폄하하는 것이 아닙니다. 요리하는 것은 정말 소중한 일입니다. 제가 군대에 들어갔을 때 하나님이 저를 훈련시키신 곳이 군인들의 음식을 준비하는 곳이었습니다. 그곳에서 저는 생명의 양식을 준비하는 것을 배웠습니다.

제가 미국에 처음 왔을 때 저는 멋진 삶을 동경했습니다. 하지만 제일 먼저 일을 시작한 곳은 주유소였습니다. 청바지를 입고 주유소에서 손님들이 타고 온 차의 오일을 점검해 드렸습니다. 개스를 주유하는 일을 했습니다. 구멍 난 타이어를 고쳐 드리는 일을 했습니다. 저는 주유소에서 인생을 배웠습니다. 인생 수업을 받았습니다.

젊은이들의 로망은 너무 일찍 멋진 곳에서 멋진 삶을 살기 원하는 것입니다. 하지만 진정한 멋진 삶을 위해서는 멋진 곳이 아닌 곳에서 훈련을 받아야 합니다. 알렉시스 오헤니언은 “젊은 시절엔 멋진 일을 하고 싶어 한다. 하지만 그 멋진 일은 돼지우리 속에 숨겨져 있을 가능성이 크다. 그 숨겨진 멋진 삶을 발견하려면 시간이 오래 걸린다.”라고 말합니다. 다윗이 멋진 삶을 살기 위해 들어간 곳은 아둘람 굴입니다. 유대 광야입니다. 그곳은 결코 멋진 곳이 아니었습니다. 삭막한 곳이었습니다. 가난과 고난이 함께한 곳이었습니다. 죽음의 위협이 계속되는 곳이었습니다. 그런데 하나님은 다윗을 그곳에서 키우셨습니다. 멋지지 않은 곳에서 왕의 수업을 받게 하셨습니다.

예수님은 구유에서 태어나셔서 십자가에서 죽으셨습니다. 십자가는 결코 멋진 곳이 아닙니다. 정말 무서운 처형대입니다. 로마 황제 중의 한 사람은 십자가라는 말도 꺼내지 못하게 했다고 합니다. 예수님은 멋진 곳에서 죽지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가를 지시기 전에 채찍으로 온몸이 피투성이가 되셨습니다. 머리에는 가시 면류관을 쓰셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 두 손과 두 발에 못 박혀 죽으셨습니다. 그런데 가장 흉측한 십자가에서 멋진 삶이 전개되었습니다. 인류를 구원하는 아름다운 일이 성취되었습니다. 가장 멋지지 않은 곳에서 가장 멋진 삶의 열매가 맺힌 것입니다. 이것이 하나님의 역설입니다. 고난의 신비입니다.

물론 예수님의 생애가 십자가에서 끝난 것이 아닙니다. 예수님은 사흘 만에 부활하셨습니다. 하늘로 승천하셨습니다. 모든 이름에 뛰어난 이름을 받으셨습니다. 영화로우신 주님으로 존귀케 되셨습니다. 지금도 수많은 선교사님들이 흑암처럼 어두운 곳을 찾아가 멋진 삶을 살고 계십니다. 가장 아름답고 멋진 삶에는 고난이 따릅니다. 헌신이 따릅니다. 깨어지고 망가지는 경험을 하게 됩니다. 하지만 그 결과는 아름답습니다. 이번 성탄에 제가 깨달은 메시지입니다. 복된 성탄과 새해가 되시길 빕니다.

A Wonderful Life Is not Found In Wonderful Places

The place where Jesus was born is a manger, not a magnificent place. The most beautiful Jesus was born in a place that was not magnificent. "She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them." (Luke 2:7). We like wonderful places and dream of living a wonderful life. But to live a wonderful life, we must first be able to choose a humble place. God hides treasures in the darkness. "I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name." (Isaiah 45:3).

What does the wonderful life we pursue mean? It's a difficult question. What image does the wonderful life we dream of have? It will be different for everyone. Jesus truly lived a wonderful life. He preached the gospel of the kingdom and took care of the marginalized. He healed many sick people. He cured those possessed by demons. Jesus set free those oppressed by the devil and healed those in pain.

The places where the people Jesus cared for lived were not wonderful. Lepers lived in isolation. They lived on the boundaries where healthy people lived. Many beggars at that time were disabled. They were even abandoned by their families. But Jesus went to the places where these rejected people lived and did wonderful things. He healed them and restored their infinite potential. He helped them live wonderful lives.

From our youth, we long for wonderful things. We long for wonderful places to live a wonderful life. But the truly wonderful life cannot be found in wonderful places. Joseph's wonderful life began in the pit his brothers threw him into. The house of Potiphar, where he was a slave, was not a magnificent place. The prison he entered as a result of resisting Potiphar's wife's temptation was not a magnificent place. But it was there that God was with him. God had prepared people for Joseph.

When I finished my junior year of college and joined the military, I dreamed of doing something wonderful. But the first place I started working in the military was the kitchen. I started my military life as a cook. Wearing a white hat, trimming pollack, and cooking fish cakes with a slightly strange smell. Don't get me wrong. I'm not belittling cooks at all. Cooking is really important. When I entered the military, the place where God trained me was where I prepared food for the soldiers. There I learned to prepare the bread of life.

When I first came to America, I longed for a wonderful life. But the first place I started working was at a gas station. Wearing jeans, I checked the oil of the cars that customers drove in at the gas station. I fueled the gas. I repaired punctured tires. I learned about life at the gas station. I received life lessons.

Young people's dream is to live a wonderful life in a wonderful place too early. But to live a truly wonderful life, you must be trained in not-so-wonderful places. Alexis Ohanian says, "In your youth, you want to do something wonderful. But that wonderful thing is likely hidden in a pigsty. It takes a long time to discover that hidden wonderful life." David went into the cave of Adullam for a wonderful life. The wilderness of Judea. It was not a magnificent place. It was a barren place. It was a place where poverty and hardship coexisted. It was a place where the threat of death continued. But God raised David in that place. He received the lesson of a king in a not-so-wonderful place.

Jesus was born in a manger and died on the cross. The cross is not a wonderful place. It's a really scary place of execution. One of the Roman emperors even forbade the word cross to be mentioned. Jesus did not die in a wonderful place. Before carrying the cross, Jesus was flogged until his body was covered in blood. He wore a crown of thorns on his head. Jesus died on the cross, nailed through both hands and feet. But from the most hideous cross, a wonderful life unfolded. The beautiful work of saving humanity was accomplished. The most wonderful fruits of life were borne in the most unwonderful place. This is the paradox of God. The mystery of suffering.

Of course, Jesus' life did not end on the cross. He rose from the dead on the third day. He ascended into heaven. He received the name above all names. He was exalted as the Lord of glory. Even now, numerous missionaries go to dark places like darkness to live wonderful lives. The most beautiful and wonderful life comes with suffering. It comes with dedication. You will experience being broken and destroyed. But the result is beautiful. This is the message I realized this Christmas. I wish you a blessed Christmas and New Year.
