새롭게 시작하는 것은 좋은 것입니다. 하나님이 새해를 주신 것은 새롭게 시작하라고 주신 것입니다. 그런 면에서 새해는 선물입니다. 저는 시간을 소중히 여기는 사람입니다. 지식, 지혜, 물질, 그리고 관계는 축적이 가능하지만 시간만큼은 축적이 가능하지 않습니다. 결국 인생은 주어진 시간을 어떻게 사용하느냐에 따라 결정됩니다. 하나님은 모든 사람에게 하루 24시간을 공평하게 선물로 주셨습니다. 우리 인생은 주어진 시간을 낭비하지 않고 잘 활용하느냐에 따라 결정됩니다. 시간을 낭비하지 않는다는 것은 시간을 잘 사용함으로 좋은 결과를 만들어 내는 것입니다. 풍성한 열매를 맺는 것입니다.

열심히 일하는 것은 중요합니다. 하지만 더 중요한 것이 있습니다. 그것은 지혜롭게 일하는 것입니다. 지혜롭게 일한다는 것은 좋은 결과를 만들어 내는 것을 의미합니다. 중요하지 않은 일에 열심을 내는 것은 정말 어리석습니다. 김난도 교수는 “걸레가 더러우면 청소를 열심히 할수록 집은 더 더러워지는 법이다.”라고 말합니다. 어떻게 하면 우리에게 주어진 시간을 낭비하지 않고 지혜롭게 사용할 수 있을까요? 그 비밀은 의미 있는 목표를 설정하고 달성하는 데 있습니다.

목표를 설정하고 성취할 때 시간을 지혜롭게 사용할 수 있습니다. 목표를 설정하기 위해서는 먼저 목표의 중요성을 절실하게 깨달아야 합니다. 목표를 설정하는 것은 의도적입니다. 아무도 우리를 대신해서 목표를 세워줄 수 없습니다. 우리가 달성할 목표는 우리 스스로가 세워야 합니다. 인간은 성장할 때 가장 큰 기쁨을 누리게 됩니다. 하나님은 우리 안에 성장 본능을 넣어 주셨습니다. 그래서 우리 인간은 성장하길 원하고, 성장할 때 기쁨을 누리게 됩니다. 그런데 성장은 저절로 이루어지지 않습니다. 의도적인 목표를 세우고 노력할 때 가능하게 됩니다. 아무 것도 하지 않고 성장할 수는 없습니다. 아무 것도 하지 않으면 아무 일도 일어나지 않습니다. 씨앗을 심지 않고 어떻게 꽃이 피고 열매를 맺을 수가 있겠습니까? 성장을 위한 목표를 세우고, 그 목표를 성취하기 위해 계획을 세워야 합니다. 또한 그 계획을 실천에 옮길 때 우리는 성장하게 됩니다. 목표가 없이 산다는 것은 마치 바다에서 어디로 갈지를 몰라 표류하는 배와 같습니다.

하나님은 인간을 목표 지향적으로 만드셨습니다. 인간은 목표를 갖고 살 때 가장 건강하게 살 수 있습니다. 역동적으로 살아갈 수 있습니다. 하나님은 목표를 통해 우리를 탁월하게 만드십니다. 목표를 통해 우리 안에 있는 재능과 은사를 발견하도록 도와주십니다. 목표를 통해 우리 안에 있는 무한한 잠재력을 발휘하도록 도와주십니다. 하나님은 목표를 통해 우리와 함께 일하시고, 목표를 달성케 하심으로 우리를 더욱 아름답게 만들어 가십니다. 바울은 목표가 선명하고 분명했습니다. “오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가노라”(빌 3:13하-14).

바울은 목표를 푯대라는 말로 표현했습니다. 푯대란 분명한 목표를 의미합니다. 바울은 목표를 갖고 살아가는 삶을, 경주자가 결승점을 향해 뛰는 것에 비유합니다. “그러므로 나는 달음질하기를 향방 없는 것 같이 아니하고 싸우기를 허공을 치는 것 같이 아니하며”(고전 9:26). 바울은 분명한 방향을 정했습니다. 향방 없는 것처럼 달려가지 않았습니다. 허공을 치는 것처럼 살지 않았습니다. 그는 의미 있는 목표를 설정하고 그 목표를 향해 전진했습니다.

목표를 정할 때 가장 중요한 일은 가지치기를 잘하는 것입니다. 나무는 가지치기를 통해 풍성한 열매를 맺습니다. 가지치기를 통해 나무의 잠재력은 극대화됩니다. 우리 인생도 마찬가지입니다. 가지치기를 통해 중요한 목표에 집중할 수 있습니다. 한 사람이 모든 것을 잘할 수 없습니다. 하지만 한두 가지는 탁월하게 잘할 수 있습니다. 중요한 원리는 한 가지를 정말 잘할 수 있는 사람은 다른 일도 잘할 수 있는 능력을 갖추게 된다는 사실입니다.

목표를 달성하는 지혜는 하나님과 함께 시작하는 것입니다. 혼자서는 중요한 목표를 달성할 수 없습니다. 하나님의 도우심이 필요합니다. 목표를 달성하는 지혜는 작게 시작하는 것입니다. 작게 시작해서 꾸준히 하는 것입니다. 하고 싶은 일은 어느 날 갑자기 잘할 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 매일 조금씩 시도할 때 비로소 잘할 수 있게 됩니다. 그렇게 평생 노력하고 훈련하게 되면 어느 날 탁월함의 경지에 이르게 됩니다. 코로나 19의 등장으로 미래가 불확실하고 불안합니다. 그렇다고 해서 아무 목표도 없이 지내는 것은 정말 시간을 낭비하는 것입니다. 미래가 불안하다는 것은 역설적으로 새로운 가능성이 열려 있다고 볼 수 있습니다. 새로운 성장을 위해 새 목표를 설정하십시오. 새 가능성에 도전하십시오. 하나님의 도우심을 받아 아름다운 목표를 성취하는 한 해가 되시길 빕니다.

Start Anew by Setting Goals!

It is good to start over. God gave the New Year to start anew. In that sense, the New Year is a gift. I am a person who values time. Knowledge, wisdom, material, and relationships can accumulate, but not time. After all, life is determined by how you use your time. God gave everyone 24 hours a day as a fair gift. Our life is determined by not wasting our time and making good use of it. Not wasting time means making good use of our time and producing good results. It is to produce abundant fruit.

It is important to work hard. But there is something more important. It is to work wisely. Working wisely means producing good results. It's really foolish to be zealous about things that don't matter. Professor Kim Nan-do says, “If the mops are dirty, the more you clean the house, the more dirty it becomes.” How can we use our time wisely without wasting our time? The secret lies in setting and achieving meaningful goals.

You can use your time wisely when you set and achieve goals. To set a goal, you must first realize the importance of the goal. Setting goals is intentional. No one can set goals for us. The goals we will achieve must be set by ourselves. We enjoy the greatest joy when we grow. God has put the instinct for growth in us. So we humans want to grow, and we enjoy when we are growing. But growth doesn't happen by itself. It becomes possible when you set intentional goals and work hard. You can't grow without doing anything. If you do nothing, nothing happens. How can flowers bloom and bear fruit without planting seeds? You must set goals for growth, and you have to plan to achieve them. And when we put that plan into action, we grow. Living without a goal is like a boat drifting in the sea without knowing where to go.

God made humans to be goal-oriented. Humans live healthiest when they live with goals. They can live dynamically. God makes us excellent through goals. Through goals, He helps us discover the talents and gifts within us. Through goals, He helps us unlock the infinite potential within us. God works with us through goals and makes us more beautiful by helping us achieve them. Paul had a clear goal. “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13b-14).

Paul expressed the goal as a mark. A mark means a clear goal. Paul compares the life of living with a goal to a racer running towards the finish line. “Therefore, I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air” (1 Corinthians 9:26). Paul has set a clear direction. He did not run aimlessly. He didn't live like he was beating the air. He set meaningful goals and moved on toward them.

The most important thing when setting goals is pruning them well. Trees produce abundant fruit through pruning. Through pruning, the tree's potential is maximized. The same goes for our lives. Pruning helps you focus on your important goals. One person can't do everything well. But you can do one or two excellently. An important principle is that those who can do one thing really well have the ability to do other things.

Wisdom to achieve your goals is to start with God. You cannot achieve important goals alone. We need God's help. The wisdom to achieve your goals is to start small. Start small and do it consistently. What you want to do is not something you can suddenly do well one day. It is only when you try a little every day that you can do well. If you work hard and train like that, one day you will reach the level of excellence. The future is uncertain and uneasy with the emergence of COVID-19. Still, staying without any goals is really a waste of time. Paradoxically, the uncertainty of the future opens up new possibilities. Set new goals for new growth. Challenge new possibilities. May God help us achieve our beautiful goals in the New Year.
