[목회서신] 바다가 가르쳐 준 지혜 | Wisdom Taught by the Ocean

저희 가정의 가족 휴가는 일 년에 한번 오션사이드(Oceanside)에서 갖습니다. 거의 같은 장소로 갑니다. 그 이유는 같은 사람, 같은 장소에 싫증을 잘 느끼지 않는 저의 기질 때문인 것 같습니다. 또한 같은 사람과 같은 장소에서 늘 새로움을 발견하게 하시는 하나님의 은혜 때문인 것 같습니다. 오션사이드에 가면 끝이 보이지 않는 바다를 만납니다. 끝이 보이지 않는 바다를 보면서 하나님의 크심을 생각합니다. 바다를 만나면 바다가 제게 말을 걸어오는 것을 느낍니다. 바다는 해마다 훌륭한 스승이 되어 제게 깊은 가르침을 줍니다. 저는 조용히 귀를 기울이고 받아 적습니다. 반복해서 가르쳐 주는 내용이 제게 더욱 소중합니다.

바다에게 겸손을 배웁니다. 바다는 가장 낮은 곳에 임합니다. 중국의 현인은 “강과 바다가 온갖 시냇물의 왕이 될 수 있는 것은 자기를 잘 낮추기 때문이다. 그러므로 능히 온갖 시냇물의 왕이 될 수 있는 것이다.”라고 말했습니다. 바다는 가장 낮은 곳에서 모든 것을 품습니다. 바다의 품은 크고 넓습니다. 모든 것을 품어 살리고 모든 것을 품어 정결케 합니다. 우리는 높은 곳에 올라서기를 원합니다. 하지만 높은 곳은 위험합니다. 교만은 위험합니다. 우리가 늘 경계해야 할 것이 교만입니다. 우리는 겸손의 덕을 날마다 쌓도록 해야 합니다. 겸손은 하나님의 복을 담고 키우고 나누는 그릇입니다. 바다는 가장 낮은 곳에서 우리에게 겸손의 덕을 가르쳐 줍니다.

바다에게 침묵을 배웁니다. 깊은 바다는 말이 없습니다. 침묵이 침묵을 부르듯이 깊은 바다는 말이 없습니다. 깊은 바다 속은 고요합니다. 저는 바다의 침묵을 통해 바다의 무게를 느낍니다. 큰 바다는 가볍지 않습니다. 경박하지 않습니다. 바다보다 크신 하나님의 언어는 침묵입니다. 고요함입니다. 하나님은 필요할 때 말씀하십니다. 하지만 침묵으로 말씀하실 때가 더욱 많습니다. 바다의 무게는 신중함을 의미합니다. 지혜는 신중함에 있습니다. 신중한 분별, 신중한 선택, 신중한 결정은 우리 미래를 안전하게 이끌어 줍니다. 저는 한 때 큰 어려움을 겪은 적이 있습니다. 큰 어려움을 통과한 후에 제가 깨달은 지혜는 신중함이었습니다.

바다에게 경계의 중요성을 배웁니다. 바닷가에서 며칠을 머무는 동안, 썰물과 밀물을 만났습니다. 놀라운 것은 밀물이 밀려오지만 일정한 경계를 넘지 않는다는 것입니다. 바다가 경계를 넘는 순간 엄청난 결과를 낳게 됩니다. 바다는 쓰나미가 아니면 경계를 넘지 않습니다. 문제는 지구온난화로 바다의 경계가 서서히 무너지고 있다는 것입니다. 인간의 탐욕이 만들어낸 결과입니다. 일정한 선을 지킬 줄 아는 것이 지혜입니다. 지켜야 할 선은 지켜야 합니다. 지켜야 할 선을 지키지를 않을 때 탈선하게 됩니다. 기차는 철로 위로 달려야 안전합니다. 기차가 철로를 벗어나는 순간 전복됩니다. 하나님은 우리 각자에게 일정한 구역을 허락해 주셨습니다. 그 구역을 소중히 여길 줄 알아야 합니다. 또한 다른 사람의 구역을 침범하지 않도록 해야 합니다. 그때 이 세상은 평화로운 세상이 됩니다.

바다에게 순응해야 할 대상과 정복해야 할 대상의 차이를 배웁니다. 큰 바다에 도전하는 것은 어리석은 일입니다. 어느 정도 풍랑은 통제가 가능합니다. 하지만 정말 큰 풍랑이 찾아오면 아무 것도 할 수 없습니다. 큰 풍랑이 지나가길 기다려야 합니다. 높은 산을 정복하는 산악인들이 있습니다. 그 도전과 그 용기에 박수를 보내긴 하지만, 높은 산을 정복하기 위해 도전하는 산악인의 가족들은 불안해합니다. 높은 산을 정복하는 희열 때문에 계속 높은 산을 정복하다 화를 당하는 산악인들을 가끔 만납니다. 큰 바다와 높은 산은 정복의 대상이 아니라 순응해야 할 대상입니다. 하나님은 큰 바다 보다 크신 분입니다. 높은 산보다 높으신 분입니다. 하나님은 우리가 정복해야 할 대상이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리가 의지하고 순종해야 할 대상입니다. 하나님은 그를 신뢰하고 순종하는 사람에게 큰 복을 주시는 것을 봅니다.

바다에게 다양성의 아름다움을 배웁니다. 바다 안에는 크고 작은 다양한 종류의 물고기가 삽니다. 큰 바다에는 큰 고래가 삽니다. 큰 것을 품기 위해서는 큰 그릇이 되어야 합니다. 옹달샘에는 고래가 살 수 없습니다. 강과 호수와 바다의 크기가, 품을 수 있는 고기의 크기를 결정합니다. 또한 큰 바다에는 아주 작은 물고기도 삽니다. 큰 바다에는 다양한 종류의 물고기가 삽니다. 우리는 바다에서 하나님의 창조 솜씨를 배웁니다. 하나님은 75억의 인구를 모두 다르게 만드셨습니다. 바닷가의 모래도, 겨울에 내리는 눈도 현미경으로 보면 모두 다르다고 합니다. 다른 것은 틀린 것이 아닙니다. 다른 것은 독특한 것이며, 서로 다른 것이 조화를 이룰 때 아름다움이 드러납니다. 우리 교회가 낮은 곳에서 모든 것을 품는 큰 바다와 같으면 좋겠습니다. 주님의 평강을 빕니다.

Wisdom Taught by the Ocean

Our family spends vacation once a year in Oceanside. We mostly go to the same place. The reason seems to be because of my temperament, which is why I don't get tired of the same people and the same places. Also, it seems to be because of God's grace to always discover new things in the same places with the same people. If you go to Oceanside, you will find an endless ocean. Looking at the endless ocean, I think of the greatness of God. When I look out to the ocean, I feel as if the ocean is talking to me. The ocean is a great teacher as it teaches me every year. I listen quietly and take notes. What it teaches me over and over is most important to me.

Humility can be learned from the ocean. The ocean is present in the lowest places. A sage in China said, “The reason why the river and the sea can be kings of all kind of streams is because they are lower. Therefore, they can be kings of all kinds of streams.” The ocean holds everything in its lowest place. The embrace of the ocean is large and wide. It saves and purifies by embracing everything. We want to rise high. But high places are dangerous. Pride is dangerous. Pride is something we should always be on guard against. We must build up the virtue of humility every day. Humility is a vessel that contains, nurtures, and shares God's blessings. The ocean teaches us the virtue of humility in the lowest places.

We can also learn silence from the ocean. The deep ocean is silent. As silence draws silence, the deep ocean is silent. It is quiet inside the deep ocean. I feel the weight of the ocean through the silence of the ocean. The great ocean is not light. It's not frivolous. The language of our God who is greater than the ocean is silence. It is stillness. God speaks when we need it. But more often than not, he speaks in silence. The weight of the ocean means prudence. Wisdom is in prudence. Careful discernment, careful choices, and careful decisions make our future safe. I once had a lot of trouble. The wisdom I learned after going through great difficulties was prudence.

We learn the importance of boundaries from the ocean. During a few days at the beach, we encountered low and high tides. The surprising thing is that when the tides come in it doesn't cross certain boundaries. At the moment the ocean crosses its boundaries, the consequences are staggering. The ocean does not cross its boundaries unless it becomes a tsunami. The problem is that the boundaries of the ocean are slowly collapsing due to global warming. It is the result of human greed. Knowing how to keep a certain boundary is wisdom. The boundary to be kept must be kept. If you do not follow the line you are supposed to follow, you will be derailed. Trains are safe when they run on railroad tracks. The moment the train leaves the track, it overturns. God has given each of us a certain territory. You have to learn how to cherish that territory. You must also ensure that you do not invade other people's territory. Then the world will become a peaceful place.

We learn the difference between what to surrender and what to conquer from the ocean. It is foolish to challenge the great sea. To some extent, storms are controllable. But when a really big storm comes, nothing can be done. You have to wait for the big storm to pass. There are climbers who conquer high mountains. Although we applaud the challenge and their courage, the family of the climber who takes on the challenge to conquer the high mountains is uneasy. Because of the joy of conquering a high mountain, I sometimes meet mountaineers who suffer disaster while conquering a high mountain. The great seas and high mountains are objects to surrender, not to conquer. God is greater than the great sea. He is higher than the high mountains. God is not something we have to conquer. God is the one who we depend on and obey. We see that God gives great blessings to those who trust and obey him.

We learn the beauty of diversity from the ocean. A wide variety of large and small fish live in the ocean. Big whales live in the big ocean. To hold a big thing, it must be a big vessel. Whales cannot live in a spring. The size of rivers, lakes and seas determines the size of the fish they can hold. Also in the big seas live very small fish. A wide variety of fish live in the great ocean. We learn God's creative craft from the ocean. God made all 7.5 billion people different. It is said that the sand on the beach and the snowflakes in winter are all different when viewed through a microscope. Being different is not wrong. Different is unique, and beauty is revealed when different things are in harmony. I wish our church will be like a great ocean that embraces everything in a low place. I wish you the peace of the Lord.
