[목회서신] 변화와 성숙의 아름다움 | The Beauty of Change and Maturity

저는 변화와 성숙을 추구하며 살고 있습니다. 그 이유는 변화와 성숙 속에 아름다움이 깃들어 있기 때문입니다. 변화는 아름다운 것입니다. 하지만 변질은 추한 것입니다. 변화는 성장과 성숙 그리고 원숙을 의미합니다. 변화하고 있다는 것은 살아 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 죽은 것은 변화하지 않습니다. 무덤에는 변화가 없습니다. 살아 약동(躍動)하는 어린 생명들을 보십시오. 날마다 변하고 성장하는 것을 느낍니다. 변화와 성숙을 위해서는 변화와 성숙에 관심을 가져야 합니다.

어릴 적 아이들은 미숙합니다. 미숙한 아이들은 감정 조절을 잘 못합니다. 미숙한 아이들은 쉽게 흔들립니다. 하지만 미숙한 아이들은 성숙을 향해 나아갑니다. 미숙한 아이들이 성숙해 가는 것을 볼 때 부모는 기쁩니다. 유영만 교수님은 성숙을 아름다움이라고 말합니다. “아름다울 ‘미(美)’는 ‘양(羊)’이 무럭무럭 ‘커가는(大)’ 모습을 보는 주인의 흐뭇한 마음에서 비롯되었다. 양을 바라보는 주인의 마음은 매일 매일이 다르다. 똑같은 양도 짧았던 털도 길어지고, 덩치도 커지면서 매일 성장하는 모습을 보이기 때문이다.” 우리는 하나님 앞에서 어린 양입니다. 하나님의 즐거움은 우리가 무럭무럭 성장하는 것을 바라보시는데 있습니다. 변화와 성숙은 어떻게 이루어지는 것일까요?

첫째, 하나님의 은혜로 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 하나님의 은혜가 없이는 변화하고 성숙할 수 없습니다. 하나님의 한량없는 은혜 속에 무조건적인 사랑이 담겨 있습니다. 사람은 은혜를 경험하고 깨달을 때 변화됩니다(골 1:6). 무조건적인 사랑을 받을 때 성장합니다. 바울은 은혜의 비밀을 경험한 사람입니다. 그래서 바울은 “내가 나 된 것은 하나님의 은혜로 된 것이니”(고전 15:10)라고 고백합니다. 그는 영의 아들 디모데에게 “너는 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 은혜 가운데서 강하고”(딤후 2:1)라고 권면합니다. 사도 베드로도 “오직 우리 주 곧 구주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 그를 아는 지식에서 자라 가라”(벧후 3:18)고 말씀합니다.

둘째, 하나님의 말씀을 통해 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 하나님의 말씀은 살아 역사하는 능력입니다(히 4:12). 우리가 말씀과 접촉할 때 말씀이 우리를 변화시킵니다. 우리가 말씀을 읽을 때 말씀이 우리를 읽어줍니다. 우리가 누구이며 우리가 무엇을 회개해야 할지 알려 줍니다. 무엇을 바로 잡아야 할지를 알려 줍니다(딤후 3:16). 우리가 말씀을 붙잡을 때 말씀이 우리를 붙잡아줍니다. 성경은 하나님의 거룩한 말씀입니다. 원리는 간단합니다. 거룩한 것과 접촉할 때 우리는 거룩해집니다. 거룩하신 하나님의 말씀과 접촉할 때 변화와 성숙을 경험하게 됩니다.

셋째, 성령님을 통해 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 성령님은 거룩한 영이십니다. 성령님은 은혜의 영이십니다(히 10:29). 성령님은 진리의 영이십니다(요 15:26). 성령님은 하나님의 깊은 것을 깨닫도록 도와주십니다(고전 2:10). 성령님은 하나님이 우리에게 은혜로 주신 것들을 알려 주십니다(고전 2:12). 성령님은 우리가 예수님의 영광을 바라보는 중에 예수님의 형상으로 변화하도록 도와주십니다(고후 3:18). 성령님의 도움 없이 육적인 노력으로 예수님을 닮을 수가 없습니다. 예수님을 닮아가는 변화와 성숙은 성령님의 도움으로 이루어지는 초자연적인 역사입니다.

넷째, 좋은 만남을 통해 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 가장 좋은 만남은 하나님과의 만남입니다. 하나님을 만나면 변화됩니다. 우리는 훌륭한 스승과의 만남을 통해 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 좋은 친구와 좋은 책과의 만남을 통해 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 좋은 교회 공동체와의 만남을 통해 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 만남은 결과를 낳습니다. 만남을 통해 우리 의식이 변화됩니다. 새로운 안목을 갖게 됩니다. 새로운 지식의 지평이 넓어집니다. 좋은 만남의 모범을 통해 우리의 성품은 아름답게 변화됩니다.

다섯째, 고난을 통해 변화하고 성숙하게 됩니다. 고난은 우리가 직면해야 할 문제입니다. 하나님은 왜 어려운 문제를 우리에게 허락하시는 것일까요? 그 이유는 문제를 통해 우리 존재가 확장되기 때문입니다. 마음의 그릇이 커지기 때문입니다. 작은 우물에서는 고래가 살 수 없습니다. 고래는 바다에서만 살 수 있습니다. 작은 그릇에는 작은 존재가 삽니다. 큰 그릇에는 큰 존재가 삽니다. 우리 그릇이 커질 때 많은 사람들을 품을 수 있습니다. 우리 자신을 넘어 다른 사람들을 사랑할 수 있게 됩니다. 그릇보다 더 중요한 것은 그릇에 담는 내용입니다. 고난은 우리의 그릇을 키워줍니다. 또한 고난을 통해 우리 그릇에 좋은 내용을 담게 됩니다. 그런 까닭에 고난을 통해 변화하고 성숙한 사람은 깊이가 있습니다. 남다른 지혜와 통찰이 있습니다. 고통 중에 있는 사람들과 함께 눈물을 흘릴 수 있는 공감 능력을 갖게 됩니다. 변화와 성숙은 자신만을 위한 것이 아닙니다. 변화와 성숙은 우리 이웃을 복되게 하기 위한 것입니다. 변화와 성숙을 통해 더욱 아름다운 생애를 사시길 빕니다.

The Beauty of Change and Maturity

I live in pursuit of change and maturity. The reason is because of the beauty that resides in change and maturity. Change is a beautiful thing. But perversion is ugly. Change refers to growth, maturity, and also into full maturity. To be changing means to be alive. Dead things do not change. There is no change in the grave. Look at the young lives that come alive. We feel them changing and growing every day. For change and maturity to happen, you need to take more interest in change and maturity.

Young children are not fully matured. Immature children are not good at controlling their emotions. Immature children are easily shaken. But immature children progress towards maturity. Parents are happy to see their immature children become mature. Professor Youngman Yoo says that maturity is beauty. “Beautiful ‘beauty (美)’ comes from the owner’s blissful heart as one sees the ‘sheep (羊)’ growing ‘bigger (大)’ steadily. The heart of the owner looking at the sheep is different every day. This is because the same sheep shows its hair growing and grows in size every day.” We are lambs before God. God's joy is in watching us grow steadily. How does change and maturity happen?

First, we are changed and matured by the grace of God. You cannot change and mature without God's grace. Unconditional love is contained in God's boundless grace. People are changed when they experience and realize grace (Colossians 1:6). They grow when they receive unconditional love. Paul experienced the mystery of grace. That is why Paul confesses, “By the grace of God I am what I am” (1 Corinthians 15:10). He exhorts his spiritual son Timothy, “Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:1). The apostle Peter also says, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

Second, we are changed and matured through the Word of God. The word of God is a living and active power (Hebrews 4:12). When we come into contact with the Word, the Word transforms us. When we read the Word, the Word reads us. It tells us who we are and what we must repent of. It tells us what to correct (2 Timothy 3:16). When we hold onto the Word, the Word holds on to us. The Bible is the Holy Word of God. The principle is simple. When we come into contact with what is holy, we become holy. When we come into contact with the Holy Word of God, we experience change and maturity.

Third, we are changed and matured through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit that is holy. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of grace (Hebrews 10:29). The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (John 15:26). The Holy Spirit helps us to understand the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit reveals the things that God has given us by grace (1 Corinthians 2:12). The Holy Spirit helps us to be transformed into the image of Jesus as we look upon His glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). Without the help of the Holy Spirit, we cannot become like Jesus through our physical efforts. Change and maturity to become like Jesus is a supernatural work that is accomplished with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Fourth, through good encounters, we are changed and matured. The best encounter is an encounter with God. When we meet God, we will be changed. We will be changed and matured through encounters with great teachers. Through meeting good friends and good books, we will be changed and matured. Through meeting with a good church community, we will be changed and matured. Encounters produce results. Meetings change our consciousness. We will have a new perspective. New horizons of knowledge will be extended. Through the example of good meeting, our character will be changed beautifully.

Fifth, we are changed and matured through suffering. Suffering is a problem we must face. Why does God allow us to face difficult problems? The reason is because our existence is expanded through problems. It is because the vessel of our heart grows. A whale cannot live in a small well. Whales can only live in the sea. Small things live in small bowls. Big things live in big bowls. As our vessel grows, it can hold many people. It allows us to love others beyond ourselves. What is more important than the bowl is the content in the bowl. Suffering nourishes our vessel. Also, through suffering, we can put good things into our vessels. That is why the person who changes and matures through suffering has depth. They have extraordinary wisdom and insight. They have the empathy to shed tears with those who are in pain. Change and maturity are not just for you. Change and maturity are meant to bless our neighbors. I wish you live a more beautiful life through change and maturity.
