     새해가 되었다고 너무 서두르지 마십시오. 헨리 데이비드 소로는 스물다섯 살 때 “서두르지 않겠다는 결심보다 더 유익한 것은 인간에게 있을 수 없다”고 말했습니다. 조급해하지 마십시오. 오히려 속도를 조금 늦추십시오. 지혜로운 사람은 기본에 충실하며 본질에 집중합니다. 우리는 거듭 하나님께로, 말씀으로, 기도로 돌아가야 합니다. 날마다 하나님을 기다리며 기도하십시오.

하나님을 기다리는 것은 영적 생활의 기초입니다. 시몬 베유는 “인내하며 기대 속에서 기다리는 것은 영적 삶의 기초이다”라고 말했습니다. 우리는 가속화된 시대에 살고 있습니다. 기다림의 미학을 상실한 지 오래입니다. 조금만 늦어져도 견디지 못하고, 불안해하고, 혼란스러워하고, 심지어 분노합니다. 속도가 우상이 되었습니다. 기다림은 잃어버린 언어가 되어가고 있습니다. 우리는 기다림이라는 언어를 회복해야 합니다. 기다림의 미학, 기다림의 예술을 다시 배워야 합니다.

하나님은 기다리시는 하나님이십니다. 하나님이 기다리시는 이유는 은혜를 베푸시기 위해서입니다. 우리가 하나님이 예비하신 풍성한 은혜를 받아 누리지 못하는 이유는 하나님을 기다리지 않기 때문입니다. 우리가 하나님을 기다릴 때, 하나님이 예비하신 복을 받게 됩니다. 이사야는 하나님을 기다리는 사람이 복이 있다고 말씀합니다. “그러나 여호와께서 기다리시나니 이는 너희에게 은혜를 베풀려 하심이요 일어나시리니 이는 너희를 긍휼히 여기려 하심이라 대저 여호와는 정의의 하나님이심이라 그를 기다리는 자마다 복이 있도다”(사 30:18).

하나님은 좋으신 아버지이십니다. 아버지는 자녀에게 필요한 것을 공급하시는 분입니다. 우리가 하나님 아버지를 기다릴 때, 하나님의 공급을 받습니다. 저는 새벽을 기다립니다. 새벽에 일어나 기도하기 위해서입니다. 새벽에 말씀을 통해 하나님의 음성을 듣기 위해서입니다. 새벽에 하나님의 도우심을 받기 위해서입니다. 하나님은 새벽에 도우신다고 약속하셨습니다. “하나님이 그 성 중에 계시매 성이 흔들리지 아니할 것이라 새벽에 하나님이 도우시리로다”(시 46:5).

요즈음은 새벽에 일어나는 또 하나의 이유가 있습니다. 3년 가까이, 새벽과 저녁에 저를 찾아오는 고양이에게 먹이를 주고 있기 때문입니다. 제가 ‘블루’라고 이름 지어준 고양이는 새벽 4시쯤 와서 기다립니다. 제가 불을 켜면, 블루는 밖에서 기다리고 있습니다. 고양이는 기다리고, 저는 밥을 줍니다. 고양이가 좋아하는 건식과 습식을 섞어 깨끗한 물과 함께 줍니다.

저는 고양이에게 아무 것도 요구하지 않습니다. 고양이는 저에게 애교를 부리거나 몸을 비비지도 않습니다. 하지만 저는 꾸준히 밥을 줍니다. 고양이는 저를 신뢰하며 같은 시간에 기다립니다. 저녁에 늦어져도 기다립니다. 저는 고양이에게서 기다림과 신뢰, 조용히 기다리는 법을 배웁니다. 고양이를 키울 생각을 한 번도 해 본 적이 없었습니다. 고양이를 조금 무서워했기 때문입니다. 그런데 3년 가까이 제가 고양이에게 밥을 주고 있습니다. 인생은 정말 신비롭습니다. 제가 고양이 밥을 주게 될 줄 누가 알았겠습니까?

기다림은 풍성한 복을 줍니다. 기다리면 마음이 고요해 집니다. 마음이 맑아집니다. 마음이 밝아집니다. 기다릴 때 하나님의 음성을 듣게 됩니다. 기다림은 하나님의 인도하심을 받는 자리입니다. 기다리는 중에 지혜와 명철, 통찰력과 분별력을 얻게 됩니다. 전쟁터에 나간 군인은 기다리는 중에 보급과 지원, 지시와 훈련을 받습니다. 새로운 장비도 익힙니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도의 군사입니다(딤후 2:3). 그러므로 주님의 공급과 인도를 받기 위해 기다려야 합니다.

기다림은 결코 낭비가 아닙니다. 저는 한때 기다림을 수동적으로만 생각했습니다. 그러나 이제 깨닫습니다. 기다림은 수동태처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 매우 능동적인 행위입니다. 농부는 씨앗을 심고 기다립니다. 여인은 태중에 생명을 품고 10개월을 기다립니다. 기다리는 동안 생명이 자라납니다. 기다림은 성장의 시간입니다. 기다린다고 모든 문제가 해결되는 것은 아닙니다. 씨앗을 심고 기다리십시오. 학습하고 훈련을 받으며 기다리십시오. 하나님 앞에 간절히 기도하며 기다리십시오. 저는 기다리면서 기도합니다. 기다리면서 말씀을 읽고 찬송합니다. 기다리면서 학습합니다. 기다리면서 좋은 만남을 가꿉니다.

날마다 하나님 앞에 나아가 잠잠히 하나님을 기다리십시오. 하나님을 기다린다는 것은 잠잠히 하나님만 바라보는 것입니다. “나의 영혼이 잠잠히 하나님만 바람이여 나의 구원이 그에게서 나오는도다”(시 62:1). 다윗은 전적으로 하나님만을 신뢰하고 기다렸습니다. 오직 하나님의 구원만을 조용히 기다렸습니다. 그는 하나님의 말씀을 기다렸습니다. “나 곧 내 영혼은 여호와를 기다리며 나는 주의 말씀을 바라는도다”(시 130:5). 하나님은 기다리고 기다렸던 다윗을 존귀하게 세우셨습니다.

하나님은 그를 기다리는 사람에게 복을 주십니다. “주님께서는, 주님을 기다리는 사람이나 주님을 찾는 사람에게 복을 주신다.”(애 3:25, 새번역). 아침에 일찍 일어나 하나님을 바라보며 기도하며 기다리십시오. 말씀을 읽고 묵상하는 중에 하나님의 인도를 받으십시오. 기도하는 중에 하나님의 지혜와 아이디어와 통찰력과 분별력을 공급받으십시오. 아침에 가꾼 고요한 마음으로 하루를 고요하게 살아가십시오. 기다림을 통해 더욱 풍성한 복을 누리며, 그 복을 이웃과 나누시길 빕니다.

Learning the Mystery of Waiting with Blue

   Do not rush simply because a new year has begun. Henry David Thoreau, when he was twenty-five, said, "Few resolutions are more beneficial to a person than the decision not to hurry." Do not be impatient. Instead, slow your pace just a little. A wise person is faithful to the basics and attentive to what truly matters. Again and again, we must return to God-to the Word and to prayer. Each day, wait for God in prayer.

Waiting for God is the foundation of the spiritual life. Simone Weil wrote, "Waiting patiently in expectation is the foundation of the spiritual life." We live in an accelerated age. Long ago, we lost the beauty of waiting. Even the slightest delay unsettles us-we grow anxious, confused, and at times even angry. Speed has become an idol. Waiting is becoming a forgotten language. We must recover this language. We must relearn the beauty and the art of waiting.

God is a God who waits. And the reason God waits is to show grace. We often fail to enjoy the abundant grace God has prepared for us because we do not wait for Him. When we wait for God, we receive the blessings He has prepared. Isaiah declares that those who wait for the LORD are blessed: "Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!" (Isaiah 30:18)

God is a good Father. A father provides what his children need. When we wait for God our Father, we receive His provision. I wait for the early morning-to rise and pray, to listen to God's voice through His Word, and to receive His help. God has promised to help us at daybreak: "God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day." (Psalm 46:5)

These days, I have another reason for rising early. For nearly three years now, I have been feeding a cat that comes to me each morning and evening. I named the cat Blue. Around four o'clock each morning, Blue comes and waits. When I turn on the light, Blue is already waiting outside. The cat waits, and I bring the food. I prepare a mix of dry and wet food with fresh water.

I ask nothing from the cat. Blue does not try to charm me or rub against me. And yet, I feed him faithfully. The cat trusts me and waits at the same time each day-even when I am late in the evening. From this cat, I am learning waiting, trust, and the quiet discipline of patient expectation. I never imagined I would feed a cat. In fact, I used to be afraid of them. And yet, here I am-feeding one for nearly three years. Life is truly mysterious. Who could have imagined this?

Waiting brings abundant blessings. When we wait, our hearts grow calm. Our minds become clear. Our spirits become bright. In waiting, we hear the voice of God. Waiting is the place where we receive God's guidance. As we wait, we gain wisdom and understanding, insight and discernment. A soldier on the battlefield receives supplies, support, instructions, and training while waiting. He even learns how to use new equipment. We are soldiers of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 2:3). Therefore, in order to receive the Lord's provision and guidance, we must wait.

Waiting is never a waste. There was a time when I thought of waiting as something passive. But now I understand: though it appears passive, waiting is in fact a deeply active act. A farmer plants seeds and waits. A mother carries life in her womb and waits for ten months. During that waiting, life grows. Waiting is the time of growth. Not every problem is solved simply by waiting. But plant the seed and wait. Study and train while waiting. Pray earnestly before God while waiting. As I wait, I pray. As I wait, I read Scripture and sing praises. As I wait, I learn. As I wait, I cultivate good relationships.

Each day, come before God and wait for Him in stillness. To wait for God means to look to Him alone in silence: "My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him." (Psalm 62:1) David waited for God alone. He quietly waited for God's salvation. He waited for God's Word: "I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I put my hope." (Psalm 130:5) God honored David, who waited and waited for Him.

God blesses those who wait for Him: "The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him." (Lamentations 3:25) Rise early in the morning. Look to God, pray, and wait. As you read and meditate on His Word, receive His guidance. As you pray, receive His wisdom, ideas, insight, and discernment. Live out your day with the quiet heart cultivated in the morning. May you enjoy more abundant blessings through waiting-and may you share those blessings with others.
