[목회서신] 비전은 초월하는 능력입니다. | Vision is the Power to Surpass.

저는 날마다 꿈을 꿉니다. 나이가 제법 들었지만 여전히 꿈을 꿉니다. 그 이유는 꿈꾸는 사람은 영원한 청춘으로 살 수 있기 때문입니다. 꿈을 다른 말로 표현하면 비전입니다. 비전은 보는 것입니다. 비전은 미래를 선명하게 바라보는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 비전을 품고 살기를 원하십니다. 하나님은 비전의 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 천지를 창조하실 때 먼저 비전을 품으셨습니다. 어머니가 아이를 잉태한 후에 출산하는 것처럼 하나님은 먼저 비전을 통해 천지창조를 잉태하셨습니다. 그리고 말씀을 통해 천지를 창조하셨습니다. 비전은 창조의 능력이며, 새 역사를 창조하는 능력입니다. 하나님의 백성에게 비전을 품고 사는 것은 선택이 아니라 필수입니다.

성경은 비전이 없는 사람은 방자히 행한다고 말씀합니다. “묵시가 없으면 백성이 방자히 행하거니와...”(잠 29:18상). 킹 제임스 영어 성경에는 “비전이 없으면 백성이 패망한다.”고 번역했습니다. 방자히 행한다는 뜻은 무례하게 행한다는 뜻이며, 무질서하게 행한다는 뜻입니다. 비전이 없으면 사람이 방탕하게 됩니다. 쉽게 유혹에 빠집니다. 반면에 비전이 있으면 유혹을 물리치고 장애물을 극복하게 됩니다. 한 기자가 헬렌 켈러에게 시각 장애인으로 태어나는 것보다 더 불행한 것이 무엇이냐고 물었습니다. 그녀는 “시력은 있되 비전이 없는 것이다.”고 대답했습니다. 제가 비전에 특별히 관심을 갖게 된 까닭은 비전은 초월하는 능력이기 때문입니다.

첫째, 비전은 나이를 초월하는 능력입니다. 비전에 대해 이야기할 때 나이가 지긋한 분들은 나이 핑계를 하십니다. 어떤 청년들은 나이가 어리다는 핑계를 합니다. 하지만 비전은 나이를 초월합니다. 갈렙이 여호수아에게 “이 산지를 지금 내게 주소서”라고 외쳤을 때가 그의 나이 85세였습니다. “오늘 내가 팔십오 세로되”(수 14:10). 아브라함이 하나님의 부르심을 받았을 때 그의 나이가 75세였습니다. 하나님이 아브라함에게 아들을 주시겠다는 비전을 심어주실 때 그의 나이는 99세였습니다. 비전은 나이를 초월하는 강력한 능력입니다.

둘째, 비전은 한계를 초월하는 능력입니다. 비전을 가진 사람은 자신의 한계를 알고 인정하면서 동시에 그 한계를 초월할 줄 압니다. 아브라함이 99세의 나이에 하나님이 주신 꿈을 꾸게 됩니다. 그것은 아들을 낳는 꿈이었습니다. 그는 자신의 몸이 죽은 것 같고 사라의 태가 죽은 것 같음을 알았습니다(롬 4:19). 아브라함과 사라는 자신들의 한계를 알고 인정했습니다. 하지만 거기에 머물지 않았습니다. 하나님이 주신 비전을 따라 그들은 새롭게 생각했습니다. 새로운 꿈을 꾸었습니다. 그때 아브라함과 사라는 육체의 한계를 초월해서 아들을 낳을 수 있었습니다.

셋째, 비전은 과거를 초월하는 능력입니다. 비전은 미래지향적입니다. 비전을 반드시 소유해야 하는 이유는 비전을 소유할 때 과거를 초월할 수 있기 때문입니다. 과거에 매이게 되면 잠재력을 발휘할 수 없습니다. 인간은 열린 존재입니다. 지혜롭게 선택하면 얼마든지 과거를 떠나 희망찬 미래를 향해 나아갈 수 있습니다. 모세는 히브리 노예 출신이었습니다. 그에게는 애굽 사람을 죽인 과거가 있었습니다. 하지만 하나님이 주신 비전으로 과거를 초월했습니다. 하나님이 그에게 맡기신 출애굽의 과업을 성취했습니다.

넷째, 비전은 환경을 초월하는 능력입니다. 우리는 환경을 탓할 때가 많습니다. 물론 환경을 무시할 수는 없습니다. 우리 인생에서 환경은 중요한 역할을 합니다. 하지만 비전을 가진 사람들은 환경을 초월했습니다. 요셉이 애굽에 끌려갔을 때 그는 보디발의 종이었습니다. 그의 환경은 결코 좋지 않았습니다. 바울이 로마 옥중에 갇혔을 때 그는 죄수의 몸이었습니다. 그의 환경은 결코 좋지 않았습니다. 하지만 요셉과 바울은 하나님이 주신 비전을 통해 환경을 초월했습니다. 환경을 초월해서 하나님이 주신 사명을 완수했습니다.

다섯째, 비전은 산만함을 초월해서 목표에 집중하는 능력입니다. 산만하면 아무것도 이룰 수 없습니다. 두 마음을 품으면 어떤 것도 성취할 수 없습니다. 우리를 산만하게 만드는 것이 많습니다. 산만함을 정복하는 길은 목표에 집중하는 것입니다. 가장 강력한 힘은 집중하는 힘입니다. 비전은 뚜렷한 목표에 집중하게 만드는 능력입니다. 하나님은 인간을 만드실 때, 목표에 집중해서 살 때 가장 강력한 힘을 발휘하도록 만드셨습니다. 목표에 집중하는 것이 성공의 비결입니다. 영국의 정치가 벤저민 디즈레일리는 “성공의 비결은 그 목표가 뚜렷하고 변하지 않는 데에 있다. 사람이 성공하지 못하는 것은 처음부터 끝까지 한 길을 가지 않았기 때문이지 성공의 길이 험악해서가 아니다. 한마음 한뜻은 쇠를 뚫고 만물을 굴복시킬 수 있다”고 말했습니다. 하나님은 우리가 비전의 사람이 되길 원하십니다. 비전의 능력을 통해 하나님의 과업을 성취하길 원하십니다. 새해를 맞이해서 새로운 비전을 품고 전진하시길 빕니다.

Vision is the Power to Surpass

I dream every day. I'm pretty old, but I still dream dreams. The reason is because dreamers can live with eternal youth. In other words, a dream is a vision. Vision is to see. A vision is to see the future clearly. God wants us to live with a vision. God is a God of vision. When God created the heavens and the earth, he first had a vision. Just as a mother gives birth after having conceived a child, God first conceived the vision of the creation of the heavens and the earth. And He created the heavens and the earth through his words. Vision is the power of creation, and the power to create new history. For God's people, living with a vision is not an option, but a necessity.

The Bible tells us that those who do not have a vision act in vain. “Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint” (Proverbs 29:18a). The King James Version translates it as, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” To act in vain means to behave rudely and to behave disorderly. Without a vision, a person becomes debauched. He easily falls into temptation. On the other hand, having a vision allows us to resist temptation and to overcome obstacles. A reporter asked Helen Keller what could be worse than being born blind. “It is having sight but no vision,” she replied. The reason I'm particularly interested in vision is because having a vision holds the power to surpass.

First, a vision has the power to surpass age. When talking about having a vision, older people use their age as an excuse. Some young people make excuses for being young. But vision surpasses age. Caleb was 85 years old when he cried out to Joshua, “Now give me this hill country.” “Today I am eighty-five years old!” (Joshua 14:10). Abraham was 75 years old when God called him. He was 99 years old when God planted a vision for Abraham to have a son. Vision is a mighty power that surpasses age.

Second, a vision has the power to surpass limits. A person with a vision knows and acknowledges his or her limitations while at the same time surpassing them. When Abraham was 99 years old, he had a dream that God had given him. It was a dream to have a son. He knew that his body was dead and that Sarah's womb was dead (Romans 4:19). Abraham and Sarah knew and acknowledged their limitations. But they didn't stay there. Following the vision God gave them, they thought in a new way. They had a new dream. At that time, Abraham and Sarah were able to surpass their physical limitations to have a son.

Third, a vision has the power to surpass the past. Visions are future oriented. The reason you must have a vision is because when you have a vision, you can surpass the past. If you are stuck in the past, you will never reach your potential. Humans are open beings. If you choose wisely, you can leave the past and move forward - towards a promising future. Moses was a Hebrew slave. He had a past which included the killing of an Egyptian. But he transcended the past with a vision given by God. Moses accomplished the task of exodus from Egypt that God had entrusted to him.

Fourth, a vision has the power to surpass one’s environment. We often blame the environment we are in. Of course, you cannot ignore the environment. Our environment plays an important role in our lives. But people with visions surpass their environment. When Joseph was taken to Egypt, he was a servant of Potiphar. His circumstances were never good. When Paul was imprisoned in Rome, he was a prisoner. His circumstances were never good. However, Joseph and Paul surpassed their environment through a God-given vision. They accomplished the mission God had given them by surpassing their circumstances.

Fifth, a vision has the power to focus on goals beyond distractions. If you are distracted, nothing will be achieved. You can't achieve anything if you are double-minded. There are many things that distract us. The way to conquer distraction is to focus on your goal. The most powerful force is the power to focus. Visionaries have the ability to focus on a clear goal. When God created human beings, He created them to be the most powerful when they live focused on their goals. Focusing on your goals is the key to success. British politician Benjamin Disraeli said, “The secret of success is constancy to purpose. People don't succeed because they haven't taken a single path from start to finish, not because the road to success is rough. One mind and one goal will pierce iron and subdue all things.” God wants us to be a people of vision. He wants us to accomplish His task through the power of vision. I wish you all, that we move forward into the new year with a new vision.
