[목회서신] 사건보다 중요한 것은 해석입니다! | Interpretation is More Important than the Event!

제 생애를 변화시킨 짧은 글들이 있습니다. 짧지만 좋은 문장은 쉽고 깊이가 있습니다. 어두운 눈을 밝혀주고, 깊은 깨달음을 선물해 줍니다. 제가 침체의 늪에서 힘들어할 때 읽었던 짧은 글 중에 칼 메닝거의 글이 있습니다. 그는 “사건보다 중요한 것은 해석이다.”라고 말했습니다. 짧은 문장이지만 제게 큰 울림으로 다가왔습니다. 사건은 이미 일어난 일입니다. 사건은 바꿀 수가 없습니다. 사건은 사실입니다. 사실을 바꿀 수는 없습니다. 하지만 사건을 어떻게 해석하느냐에 따라 많은 차이를 만들어 냅니다. 꿈보다 중요한 것은 해몽입니다.

사건은 중립입니다. 하지만 우리는 사건에 여러 가지 이름을 붙일 수 있습니다. 실패, 실연, 실수, 고난, 고통, 역경, 시련, 거절당함, 버림받음 등이라는 이름을 붙일 수 있습니다. 우리가 붙이는 이름이 우리가 사건을 해석하는 방식입니다. 또한 우리가 붙인 이름을 어떻게 해석하느냐에 따라 많은 것이 달라집니다. 우리가 직면한 사건이 우리를 무너뜨릴 수도 있고, 우리를 더욱 성장시킬 수도 있습니다. 그 차이는 사건을 어떻게 해석하고, 어떤 태도로 사건을 대하느냐에 따라 결정됩니다.

인생의 문제는 해석의 문제입니다. 똑같은 글도 어떻게 해석하느냐에 따라 큰 차이를 만듭니다. 성경 말씀도 어떻게 해석하느냐에 따라 큰 차이를 만듭니다. 해석을 잘한다는 것은 뜻을 잘 풀어 주는 것입니다. 해석을 잘한다는 것은 관점을 새롭게 해 주는 것입니다. 해석을 잘한다는 것은 긍정적인 눈으로 사건을 보게 만들어 주는 것입니다. 해석을 잘한다는 것은 소망을 주는 것입니다. 해석을 잘한다는 것은 깨닫도록 도와주는 것입니다. 해석을 잘해 주면 몰랐던 것을 알게 됩니다. 이미 알고 있었던 것은 더욱 잘 알게 됩니다. 이미 알고 있었던 것을 새로운 차원에서 이해하게 됩니다. 해석을 잘해주면 들리지 않는 것을 듣게 됩니다. 보지 못했던 것을 보게 됩니다.

며칠 전 마에스트로 금난새와 함께하는 한미동맹 70주년 기념 평화음악회에 참석했습니다. 월트 디즈니 콘서트홀에서 있었던 음악회는 정말 많은 사람들이 모여서 큰 기쁨을 누렸습니다. 콘서트를 들으면서 함께 기뻐할 수 있었던 이유 중의 하나는 금난새 지휘자의 음악에 대한 해석 때문이었습니다. 저는 음악을 소중히 여기고 좋아하지만 음악을 잘 모릅니다. 그런데 그날 금난새 지휘자의 음악 해설을 들은 후에 그분이 지휘하는 오케스트라의 연주를 들을 때 클래식 음악이 새롭게 다가왔습니다. 감동과 울림과 기쁨을 선물해 주었습니다. 아는 것만큼 들립니다. 아는 것만큼 보입니다. 아는 것만큼 사랑하게 됩니다. 아는 것만큼 누리게 됩니다. 해석은 알게 해 주는 것입니다. 같은 음악도 그 음악을 잘 이해하고 들을 때 그 맛이 달랐습니다. 다시 한번 해석의 중요성을 깨닫는 밤이었습니다.

모든 좋은 문장이 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 좋은 문장이 성경과 연결될 때 좋은 문장이라고 할 수 있습니다. 사건보다 해석을 잘한 사람이 있습니다. 그는 요셉입니다. 그는 형제들에게 미움을 받아 애굽에 팔려 갔습니다. 그는 상처를 받았습니다. 그는 버림을 받았습니다. 그는 고난의 수레를 타고 애굽에 들어갔습니다. 하지만 그는 나중에 고난 속에 하나님의 섭리가 있음을 깨닫습니다. 해석 중에 가장 탁월한 해석은 성경적으로 해석하는 것입니다. 하나님의 섭리의 관점에서 해석하는 것입니다. 그때 고난의 의미를 부여할 수 있습니다. 그때 고통스럽던 과거가 새롭게 태어납니다. 요셉이 어떻게 그의 고난을 해석했는지 들어보십시오.

“당신들이 나를 이 곳에 팔았다고 해서 근심하지 마소서 한탄하지 마소서 하나님이 생명을 구원하시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 보내셨나이다”(창 45:5). “하나님이 큰 구원으로 당신들의 생명을 보존하고 당신들의 후손을 세상에 두시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 보내셨나니 그런즉 나를 이리로 보낸 이는 당신들이 아니요 하나님이시라 하나님이 나를 바로에게 아버지로 삼으시고 그 온 집의 주로 삼으시며 애굽 온 땅의 통치자로 삼으셨나이다”(창 45:7-8). “당신들은 나를 해하려 하였으나 하나님은 그것을 선으로 바꾸사 오늘과 같이 많은 백성의 생명을 구원하게 하시려 하셨나니”(창 50:20). 그는 고난을 만민의 생명을 살리는 하나님의 섭리로 해석했습니다. 그는 하나님이 그에게 베풀어 주신 축복을 만민의 생명을 살리는 하나님의 섭리로 해석했습니다.

사건에 대한 해석을 잘할 때 우리는 용서할 수 있습니다. 상처를 준 사람들을 용서할 뿐만 아니라 그들을 축복할 수 있습니다. 요셉은 그의 형제들을 용서했고, 풍성한 축복을 베풀어 주었습니다. “해석(解釋)”이란 한문 속에 “용서하다, 화목케하다”라는 뜻이 내포되어 있습니다. 해석을 잘할 때 용서할 수 있고 화목할 수 있습니다. “사건보다 중요한 것은 해석이다”라는 문장과 함께 제가 만난 문장이 있습니다. “사건보다 중요한 것은 사건에 대한 반응이다.” “사건에 반응만 하지 말고 창조하라.” 곧 사건을 통해 새 역사를 창조하라는 것입니다. 사건에 대한 지혜로운 해석과 반응을 통해 풍성한 복을 누리시길 빕니다.

Interpretation is More Important than the Event!

There are short writings that have changed my life. Although they were short, they contained simple yet profound sentences. They enlightened dark eyes and granted deep insights. Among the short writings I read when I was struggling in the abyss of stagnation was a quote by Karl Menninger. He said, “Its interpretation is more important than the event.” Although it was a short sentence, it resonated deeply with me. The incident is what already happened. It cannot be changed. It is a fact. Facts cannot be changed. However, how we interpret the event can make a significant difference. What is more important than the dream itself is its interpretation.

Events are neutral. However, we can assign various names to events. We can name them as failure, disappointment, mistake, hardship, pain, adversity, trial, rejection, abandonment, and so on. The names we can give to these events determine how we interpret them. Moreover, much can change depending on how we interpret the names we assign. The event we face can either shatter us or further our growth. The difference lies in how we interpret the event and how we approach it.

The problems of life is a matter of interpretation. The same text makes a big difference depending on how you interpret it. The words of the Bible also make a big difference depending on how you interpret them. To be good at interpretation is to be good at unfolding its meaning. To be good at interpretation is to refresh your perspective. Being good at interpreting means seeing events with positive eyes. To be good at interpretation is to give hope. To be good at interpretation is to help realize. If you interpret well, you will learn something you didn't know before. You will even know better things than what you already knew. You will understand what you already knew but on a new level. If you interpret well, you will hear what you couldn’t hear and you will see things you didn't see before.

A few days ago, I attended a peace concert with Maestro Gum Nanse to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. Alliance. The concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall was a joy to be attended by so many people. One of the reasons we were able to rejoice together while listening to the concert was because of the interpretation of the music by Gum Nanse, the conductor. I value and love music, but I don't know much about it. But that day, after listening to the conductor's commentary on the music, classical music came to me anew as I listened to his orchestra play. It touched, resonated, and brought joy to me. We can hear as much as we know. We can see as much as we know. We can love as much as we know. We can enjoy as much as we know. Interpretation is allowing us to know. Even the same music tasted different when we understand and listen to it. Once again, it was a night of realizing the importance of interpretation.

Not all good sentences are good. They can become good when sentences are connected to the Bible. There is a person who is better at focusing on interpreting than on the event. He is Joseph. He was hated by his brothers and sold into Egypt. He was hurt. He was abandoned. He rode on a chariot of suffering into Egypt. Later, however, he realized that God's providence was in his suffering. The best interpretation of all is the biblical interpretation. It is to interpret it from the perspective of God's providence. That's when you can give meaning to suffering. That's when the painful past is reborn. Listen to how Joseph interpreted his suffering.

“And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Genesis 45:5). “But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt” (Genesis 45:7–8). “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20). He interpreted suffering as God's providence to save the lives of all people. He interpreted the blessings God bestowed upon him as God's providence to save the lives of all people.

When we interpret events well, we can forgive. Not only can we forgive those who have hurt us, but we can also bless them. Joseph forgave his brothers and bestowed abundant blessings upon them. The term "interpretation” in Chinese characters contains the meaning of "to forgive" and "to reconcile.” When we interpret well, we can forgive and reconcile. Along with the sentence, " Its interpretation is more important than the vent," there is another sentence I encountered: "What is more important than the event itself is the reaction to the event." “Do not only react to the event but create it.” It suggests creating a new history through events.
