왜 예수님께서는 하늘에서 이 땅으로 내려오셨을까요? 세상 사람들은 위로 올라가는 것을 좋아합니다. 정상을 정복하는 것을 좋아합니다. 마귀가 예수님을 유혹할 때 거룩한 성으로 데려다가 성전 꼭대기에 세웠습니다(마 4:5). 또한 마귀는 예수님을 지극히 높은 산으로 가서 천하만국과 그 영광을 보여주었습니다(마 4:8). 그리고 만일 자기에게 엎드려 경배하면 천하만국의 모든 것을 주겠다고 유혹했습니다. 사람들은 높은 곳을, 세상 영광을 갈망합니다. 하지만 예수님은 하늘에서 땅으로 내려오셨습니다. 말구유에서 태어나셨습니다. 십자가까지 내려가셨습니다. 하늘에서 내려오신 예수님의 생애는 계속 낮은 곳으로 내려가는 생애였습니다. 예수님은 왜 내려오셨을까요?

첫째, 예수님은 사랑 때문에 하늘에서 내려오셨습니다. 비천한 죄인들을 사랑하셔서 하늘에서 낮은 곳으로 임하신 것입니다. 사랑은 사색이 아닙니다. 사랑은 동사입니다. 사랑은 능동태입니다. 예수님은 사랑 때문에 하늘 영광을 버리고 내려오셨습니다. 높은 보좌를 버리시고 말구유에 태어나셨습니다. 예수님은 사랑 때문에 찾아오셨습니다. 예수님을 움직이는 가장 강력한 힘은 사랑입니다. 사랑은 거대한 에너지입니다. 사랑은 멈추어 있지 않습니다. 사랑은 움직입니다. 사랑은 큰 능력으로 역사합니다. 사랑은 찾아가는 것입니다. 사랑하면 먼저 찾아갑니다. 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니라 하나님이 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨습니다(요일 4:19).

둘째, 예수님은 용서 때문에 하늘에서 내려오셨습니다. 예수님이 오신 것은 우리를 죄로부터 구원하시기 위해서입니다(마 1:21). 인간의 비극은 죄 때문에 시작되었습니다. 죄는 인간의 행복을 파괴하는 원수입니다. 죄 때문에 사망이 임했습니다. 죄 때문에 심판과 저주와 정죄가 임했습니다. 죄 때문에 하나님과 단절되고 사람과 사람사이에도 벽을 쌓게 되었습니다. 성경에 피는 죄 문제를 해결할 수 있는 유일한 은혜의 도구라고 증거합니다. “생명이 피에 있으므로 피가 죄를 속하느니라”(레 17:11).

피흘림 없이는 사함이 없습니다(히 9:22). 예수님이 육신을 입고 이 땅에 오신 이유는 바로 우리 죄를 용서하시기 위해 피를 흘려주시기 위해서입니다. 우리 죄는 오직 피로만이 용서받을 수 있습니다. 구약에는 양과 염소와 소의 피로 죄가 사함을 받았습니다. 구약에는 짐승의 피가 죄를 덮어 주었습니다. 하지만 그들의 죄를 없이하지는 못했습니다. 예수님의 피는 하나님의 아들의 피입니다. 곧 하나님의 피입니다. 그런 까닭에 예수님의 피는 정말 고귀한 피입니다. 우리 죄를 능히 용서하고, 우리 죄를 도말할 수 있는 피입니다. 사도 베드로는 예수님의 피를 보배로운 피라고 찬양했습니다. “너희가 ... 대속함을 받은 것은 ... 오직 흠 없고 점 없는 어린 양 같은 그리스도의 보배로운 피로 된 것이니라”(벧전 1:18-19). 우리는 오직 예수님의 피를 힘입어 용서를 받았습니다. 우리는 오직 예수님의 피를 힘입어 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 수 있습니다. “그러므로 형제들아 우리가 예수의 피를 힘입어 성소에 들어갈 담력을 얻었나니”(히 10:19). 그리스도인의 담대함은 자신의 선행에 있지 않습니다. 자신의 수양과 도덕에도 있지 않습니다. 오직 예수 그리스도의 피에 있습니다.

셋째, 예수님은 겸손한 성품 때문에 하늘에서 내려오셨습니다. 성탄의 주님을 통해 우리가 배우는 것은 예수님의 겸손한 성품입니다. 예수님은 마음이 온유하고 겸손한 분입니다(마 11:29). 왜 예수님은 우리가 낮은 곳에 임하길 원하실까요? 왜 예수님은 우리가 겸손하길 원하실까요? 낮은 곳이 가장 안전하기 때문입니다. 낮은 곳에 평강이 깃듭니다. 높은 정상은 위험합니다. 높은 정상은 산소가 희박합니다. 오래 머물 수 없습니다. 하지만 낮은 곳은 안전합니다. 낮은 곳에서는 떨어질 염려가 없습니다. 우리가 어느 위치에 있든지 하나님은 우리가 겸손하길 원하십니다. 하나님은 교만한 자를 대적하십니다. 교만은 패망의 선봉입니다. “교만은 패망의 선봉이요 거만한 마음은 넘어짐의 앞잡이니라”(잠 16:18). 하나님은 겸손한 자에게 더욱 큰 은혜를 베풀어 주십니다. “그러나 더욱 큰 은혜를 주시나니 그러므로 일렀으되 하나님이 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 주신다 하였느니라”(약 4:6). 교만한 사람은 오래가지 못합니다. 하지만 겸손한 사람에게는 하나님의 은혜가 늘 따라다닙니다.

넷째, 예수님은 우리를 하늘로 이끌어 가시기 위해 내려오셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가에 죽으시고 부활하신 후에 하늘로 승천하셨습니다(눅 24:51). 예수님은 하늘에서 내려오셔서 하늘로 승천하셨습니다(요 3:13). 하늘에서 내려오신 예수님 외에는 하늘의 일을 진정으로 아는 분이 없습니다. 또한 오직 예수님만이 우리를 하늘로 인도하실 수 있습니다. 예수님은 “나 있는 곳에 너희도 있게 하리라”(요 14:3)고 말씀하십니다. 우리의 마지막 종착역은 예수님이 승천하신 하늘입니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 성탄은 우리에게 복된 성탄입니다. 성탄을 통해 예수님의 사랑과 용서와 겸손을 배웁니다. 우리를 예수님이 계신 곳으로 결국 인도하시는 하나님의 목적을 깨닫게 됩니다. 성탄의 참된 의미를 깨닫는 복된 성탄이 되시길 빕니다.

Jesus of Christmas, Who Came Down Because of Love

Why did Jesus come down from heaven to earth? Worldly people love to go upward. They like to conquer the top. When the devil tempted Jesus, he took him to the holy city and set him on top of the temple (Matthew 4:5). Also, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory (Matthew 4:8). And he tempted Jesus saying that he would give Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if he would bow down and worship him. People long for high places and worldly glory. But Jesus came down from heaven to earth. He was born in a manger. He went down to the cross. The life of Jesus, who came down from heaven, was a life of constant descent into lowly places. Why did Jesus come down?

First, Jesus came down from heaven because of love. He came down from heaven to a lower place out of love for lowly sinners. Love is not a speculation. Love is a verb. Love is active. Jesus left the glory of heaven and came down because of love. He gave up his high throne and was born in a manger. Jesus came because of love. The most powerful force that moves Jesus is love. Love is a tremendous energy. Love never stops. Love moves. Love works with great power. Love is to find. If you love it, you will visit first. We did not love God, but God first loved us (1 John 4:19).

Second, Jesus came down from heaven because of forgiveness. Jesus came to save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21). Human tragedy began because of sin. Sin is the enemy of human happiness. Death came because of sin. Judgment, curse, and condemnation came because of sin. Because of sin, we were cut off from God and built a wall between people. The Bible testifies that it is only blood that can be the means of grace that can solve the problem of sin. “For the life of a creature is in the blood, … it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life” (Leviticus 17:11).

There, is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood (Hebrews 9:22). The reason Jesus came to this earth in the flesh was to shed His blood to forgive our sins. Our sins can be forgiven only by blood. In the Old Testament, sins were forgiven with the blood of sheep, goats, and oxen. In the Old Testament, the blood of animals covered sins. But it couldn't get rid of their sins. The blood of Jesus is the blood of the Son of God. It is the blood of God. That is why the blood of Jesus is truly noble blood. It is the blood that can forgive our sins and blot out our sins. The apostle Peter praised the blood of Jesus as the precious blood. “For you were redeemed … with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect” (1 Peter 1:18–19). We are forgiven only through the blood of Jesus. Only through the blood of Jesus can we boldly come before the throne of grace. “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus” (Hebrews 10:19). Christians’ boldness does not lie in their good works. It's not even in their own discipline or morality. It lies only in the blood of Jesus Christ.

Third, Jesus came down from heaven because of his humble nature. What we learn through the Lord of Christmas is the humble character of Jesus. Jesus is meek and lowly in heart (Matthew 11:29). Why does Jesus want us to come to a low place? Why would Jesus want us to be humble? Because the lowery places are the safest. Peace dwells in the low places. High summits are dangerous. Higher summits are sparse in oxygen. We can’t stay there long. But the low places are safe. There is no fear of falling from low places. No matter where we are, God wants us to be humble. God opposes the proud. Pride is the precursor to destruction. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). God gives greater grace to the humble. “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble’” (James 4:6). Arrogant people don't last long. But God's grace always follows the humble.

Fourth, Jesus came down to take us to heaven. After Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected, he ascended into heaven (Luke 24:51). Jesus came down from heaven and ascended into heaven (John 3:13). Except for Jesus, who came down from heaven, there is no one who truly knows the things of heaven. Also, only Jesus can lead us to heaven. Jesus said, “you also may be where I am” (John 14:3). Our final destination is heaven, where Jesus ascended to. This Christmas season in which Jesus came to this earth is a blessed Christmas for all of us. Through Christmas, we learn the love, forgiveness, and humility of Jesus. We realize that it is the purpose of God to lead us to the place where Jesus is. I hope you have a blessed Christmas in which you realize the true meaning of Christmas.
