저는 뿌리에 관심이 많습니다. 그래서 《뿌리 깊은 영성》이란 책을 쓴 것 같습니다. 뿌리는 보이지 않습니다. 하지만 나무의 뿌리는 나무의 미래를 결정합니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무는 흔들리지 않습니다. 반면에 뿌리가 얕은 나무는 폭풍우가 불어오면 쉽게 쓰러집니다.

뿌리는 지탱하는 역할을 합니다. 뿌리가 견고할 때 나무는 어떤 상황에서도 잘 지탱합니다. 뿌리는 보존하고 저장하는 역할을 합니다. 뿌리는 생수를 흡수해서 보존하고 영양분을 저장합니다. 뿌리는 생수를 찾기 위해 땅속을 깊이 파고 들어갑니다. 뿌리는 땅속을 향해 뻗어가는 성질을 가지고 있습니다. 이와 같은 성질을 “굴지성(屈地性)”이라고 합니다. 반면에 식물의 잎과 가지는 빛을 향해 뻗어갑니다. 이와 같은 성질을 “굴광성(屈光性)”이라고 합니다. 뿌리는 자신을 감춥니다. 뿌리는 자신을 과시하지 않습니다. 식물의 뿌리가 자신을 과시하게 되면 태양과 맞서게 됩니다. 그 결과 식물은 순식간에 말라버리고 맙니다. 뿌리의 지혜는 자신을 감추는데 있습니다. 뿌리의 지혜는 대지의 밑바닥을 향해 깊이깊이 뻗어 내려가는데 있습니다. 뿌리의 지혜는 어두운 데서 성장하는 데 있습니다. 나무를 위로 성장시키기 위해 먼저 아래로 자라는 데 있습니다. 뿌리의 지혜는 서서히 뿌리를 확장하는 데 있습니다.

중국의 대나무 가운데 모소라는 대나무가 있습니다. 모소대나무는 씨앗을 심으면 사 년 동안 뿌리만 내립니다. 뿌리를 땅 사방으로 확장시킵니다. 그리고 오 년째 되었을 때 땅 밖으로 자신의 정체를 드러내어 순식간에 자라기 시작합니다. 6주 만에 15m 이상 성장하게 됩니다. 대나무의 지혜는 자신을 감추고 뿌리를 키우는 데 있습니다.

뿌리는 공급하는 역할을 합니다. 겨울나무는 잎사귀를 떨어뜨린 후에 나목(裸木)이 되어 오직 뿌리만을 돌봅니다. 겨울 동안 나무가 아무것도 하지 않는 것 같아 보이지만 실상은 뿌리를 돌보는 것입니다. 겨울 동안에 뿌리는 충분히 영양분을 섭취한 다음에 봄이 되면 나무 전체에 영양분을 공급합니다. 나무는 봄이 되면 싹을 틔우고 아름다운 꽃을 선물해 줍니다. 꽃이 떨어진 자리에 풍성한 열매를 맺게 됩니다. 그 모든 것의 시작은 뿌리에 있습니다.

뿌리가 허약하면 나무는 높이 자랄 수 없습니다. 옆으로 뻗어나갈 수도 없습니다. 또한 풍성한 열매를 맺을 수 없습니다. 그래서 우리는 뿌리에 관심을 가져야 합니다. 벼과 잡초에 속하는 메귀리는 키가 1m 밖에 되지 않습니다. 하지만 그 뿌리를 모두 이어 붙이면 550km나 된다는 연구 결과가 있습니다. 550km면 서울에서 제주도까지의 거리와 맞먹는 길이입니다(이나카키 히데히로, 『잡초의 성공전략』, 한국방송출판, 70쪽). 잡초의 뿌리를 통해 잡초가 왜 그토록 강력한 생존력을 가졌는지를 알 수 있습니다.

지혜로운 사람은 나무의 뿌리를 가꾸듯이 보이지 않는 것을 잘 가꾸는 사람입니다. 하나님은 보이지 않는 숨은 사람을 잘 가꾸라고 말씀합니다. “오직 마음에 숨은 사람을 온유하고 안정한 심령의 썩지 아니할 것으로 하라 이는 하나님 앞에 값진 것이니라”(벧전 3:4). 하나님은 우리 속사람을 강건케 하라고 말씀합니다. “그의 영광의 풍성함을 따라 그의 성령으로 말미암아 너희 속사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하시오며”(엡 3:16). 바울은 성도들의 내면에 그리스도의 형상이 이루어지도록 해산하는 수고를 했습니다. “나의 자녀들아 너희 속에 그리스도의 형상을 이루기까지 다시 너희를 위하여 해산하는 수고를 하노니”(갈 4:19)

가장 강력한 힘은 우리 내면에서 나옵니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 마음의 근육을 잘 키우도록 해야 합니다. 마음이 흔들리면 우리 인생이 흔들립니다. 하지만 마음이 견고하면 환경을 초월해서 견고히 설 수 있습니다. 마음을 가꾸는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 마치 정원을 가꾸듯이 날마다 정성을 다해 가꾸어야 합니다. 마음을 가꾸어야 하는 이유는 마음은 존재의 뿌리이기 때문입니다.

뿌리를 돌본다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 근본(根本)에 집중하는 것입니다. 기본(基本)에 충실하는 것입니다. 거듭 기본으로 돌아가고 본질(本質)로 돌아가는 것입니다. 기본에 충실한 사람은 그 성장의 끝을 알 수 없습니다. 하지만 기본에 충실하지 않은 사람은 모래 위에 집을 지은 사람과 같습니다. 어느 순간 쉽게 무너집니다. 뿌리를 돌본다는 것은 거듭 원천(原泉)으로 돌아가는 것입니다. 거듭 원천에 머무는 것입니다. 우리 영혼의 원천은 그리스도의 사랑입니다.

사도 바울은 그리스도의 사랑에 뿌리를 깊이 내리라고 권면합니다. “너희가 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서 능히 모든 성도와 함께 지식에 넘치는 그리스도의 사랑을 알고 그 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠함을 깨달아 하나님의 모든 충만하신 것으로 너희에게 충만하게 하시기를 구하노라”(엡 3:17하-19). 우리 영혼은 그리스도의 사랑을 먹고 마시며 삽니다. 그리스도의 사랑을 공급받을 때 안전합니다. 행복합니다. 충만합니다. 풍성한 삶을 살게 됩니다. 부디 그리스도의 사랑에 깊이 뿌리를 내림으로 풍성한 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

Wisdom of Deeply Rooting Yourself in Love

I am very interested in roots. I think that is why I wrote a book called “Deep-Rooted in Christ.” Roots are not visible. But the roots of a tree determine its future. A tree with deep roots does not sway. On the other hand, trees with shallow roots are easily toppled by storms.

Roots serve as supporters. When the roots are strong, the tree will stand up well in any situation. The root serves to preserve and store. Roots absorb and conserve living water and store nutrients. Roots dig deep into the ground to find living water. Roots have the property of extending toward the ground. This phenomenon is called “geotropism”. On the other hand, the leaves and branches of plants stretch towards the light. This phenomenon is called “phototropism”. The root hides itself. Roots don't show off. When the plant's roots show off, they face the sun. As a result, the plant quickly withers. The wisdom of the root lies in hiding oneself. The wisdom of the root lies in reaching down deep into the bottom of the earth. The wisdom of roots lies in growing in darkness. To grow a tree upwards, it is in growing downwards first. The wisdom of roots lies in gradually expanding them.

Among the Chinese bamboos, there is a bamboo called Moso. Once the seed is planted, Moso bamboo only grows its roots down for the next four years. It spreads its roots all over the ground. And when it is 5 years old, it reveals its identity outside the earth and starts to grow in an instant. In 6 weeks it will grow over 15m. The bamboo's wisdom lies in concealing itself and growing its roots.

Roots serve as suppliers. After the winter tree sheds its leaves, it becomes a bare tree and cares only for its roots. During the winter, the trees seem to do nothing, but in reality they are taking care of their roots. During the winter the roots get enough nutrients and then in the spring they supply nutrients to the entire tree. Trees sprout in spring and present beautiful flowers. In the place where the flower has fallen, it will bear abundant fruit. It all starts at the root.

A tree cannot grow tall if its roots are weak. It can't even move sideways. Also, it cannot bear abundant fruit. So, we must pay attention to the root. The wild oat, which belongs to the gramineous weed, is only 1 m tall. However, there was a research done that showed that if you connect all the roots, it will measure up to be 550 km. 550 km is equivalent to the distance from Seoul to Jeju Island (Hidehiro Inagaki, Successful Strategy for Weeds, Korea Broadcasting Press, p. 70). A weed's roots help explain why weeds have such a strong viability.

A wise person is one who takes good care of the invisible, just as one takes care of the roots of a tree. God tells us to take good care of the invisible and hidden. “Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (1 Peter 3:4). God tells us to strengthen our inner being. “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,” (Ephesians 3:16). Paul was in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in the saints. “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you” (Galatians 4:19).

Our greatest strength comes from within. For that reason, we must train the muscles of our hearts well. When our hearts are shaken, our lives are shaken. However, if your heart is firm, you can transcend your environment and stand firm. Taking care of your heart is not an easy task. Just like gardening, you must cultivate it with sincerity every day. The reason why you must cultivate your heart is because it is the root of existence.

What does it mean to take care of one’s roots? It is to focus on one’s basis. It is to stick to the basics. It is to go back to the basics and return to one’s essence. Those who are faithful to the basics cannot know the end of their growth. But a person who doesn't stick to the basics is like a person who builds his house on sand. At some point, he will break easily. To take care of one’s root is to go back to the fountain, again and again. It is to stay at the fountain, again and again. The fountain of our souls is the love of Christ.

The apostle Paul exhorts us to be deeply rooted in the love of Christ. “Being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17b–19). Our souls live by eating and drinking the love of Christ. We are safe when we are supplied with the love of Christ. We are happy and full. We will live an abundant life. May you live an abundant life by being deeply rooted in the love of Christ.
