[목회서신] 서두르지 않고 살아가는 지혜 | The Wisdom of Living Without Haste

우리의 가장 큰 고민은 조급함에 있습니다. 특별히 현대인들의 심각한 문제는 빨리 돈을 벌려고 하는 것입니다. 쉽게 돈을 벌려고 하는 것입니다. 쉬운 방법으로 성공하려고 하는 것입니다. 그래서 서두릅니다. 조급합니다. 잠언이 가르쳐 주는 지혜는 조급함에 대한 경계입니다. “부지런한 자의 경영은 풍부함에 이를 것이나 조급한 자는 궁핍함에 이를 따름이니라”(잠 21:5). “노하기를 더디 하는 자는 크게 명철하여도 마음이 조급한 자는 어리석음을 나타내느니라”(잠 14:29).

어느 정도 서두르는 것은 이해가 됩니다. 하지만 지나치게 서두르는 것이 문제입니다. 교부 포이맨은 “모든 지나침은 사탄에게서 온다.”라고 말했습니다. 지나침은 과속(過速)을 의미합니다. 지나친 속도는 탈선의 원인이 됩니다. 지나친 속도는 정로를 벗어나게 만듭니다. 지나친 속도는 영혼의 눈을 어둡게 만듭니다. 지나친 속도는 귀를 멀게 만듭니다. 지나친 속도는 멈출 수 없는 속도입니다. 멈출 수 없을 정도로 빠른 속도는 죽음을 초래합니다. 가장 좋은 차는 브레이크가 좋은 차입니다. 위험하거나 방향을 전환할 때, 안전하게 멈출 수 있는 차가 좋은 차입니다.

예수님이 마귀에게 받은 세 가지 유혹은 모두 가속(加速)과 과속(過速)에 대한 유혹이었습니다. 돌로 떡을 만들라는 것입니다. 한순간에 유명해지라는 것입니다. 한순간에 세상 모든 영광을 취하라는 것입니다. 떡은 하루아침에 만들 수 없습니다. 농부가 씨를 뿌리고, 씨를 뿌린 후에는 인내함으로 오랫동안 가꾸어야 합니다. 잡초를 뽑아주고, 적절하게 물을 주어야 합니다. 무더운 여름과 태풍과 폭풍을 잘 견뎌내야 합니다. 그래야 가을에 추수할 수가 있습니다. 그런데 마귀는 그런 과정을 무시하고 가속으로 떡을 만들라는 것입니다.

목회자인 제게도 같은 유혹이 반복됩니다. 목회자는 누구나 속히 교회가 성장하고, 속히 사람들이 변화되기를 원합니다. 하지만 목회자가 원하는 대로 되는 것이 아닙니다. 만사에 때가 있습니다. 하나님은 오래 기다리게 하신 후에 계획하신 일들을 이루실 때가 많습니다. 하나님이 어떤 일을 속히 이루신다면 그것은 오랜 기다림 후에, 때가 찼을 때 그리하십니다(사 60:22).

서두르면 깨닫지 못합니다. 깨달음은 멈출 때 임합니다. 명철이란 말은 이해한다는 뜻입니다. 명철은 보는 것과 관련되어 있습니다. 멈추어야 볼 수 있습니다. 멈추면 관찰할 수 있습니다. 멈추어야 들을 수 있습니다. “이해하다.”는 말의 영어는 “understand”입니다. “이해하다”는 아래(under)와 서다(stand)의 합성어입니다. 이해하기 위해서는 멈추어 서야 합니다. 그리고 낮은 자세로 살펴보아야 합니다. 나무의 뿌리부터 살피듯이 문제의 원인부터 살펴야 합니다. 자세를 낮추면 잘 보입니다. 자세를 낮추면 깊은 깨달음을 얻게 됩니다.

사람은 불안하면 더욱 속도를 냅니다. 불안은 가속의 태엽입니다. 불안한 사람은 멈추지 못합니다. 그래서 더욱 나쁜 방향으로 속도를 내게 됩니다. 삶의 지혜는 인내에 있습니다. 기다림에 있습니다. 기다리면서 하루하루 준비하는 것입니다. 기다리면서 배우고, 좋은 관계를 맺는 것입니다. 기다리면서 기도하는 것입니다. 기다리면서 하나님이 일하실 수 있는 시간을 드리는 것입니다. 깊은 깨달음은 고요함 중에 탄생합니다. 기다리면 고요해집니다. 고요하면 맑아집니다. 고요하면 밝아집니다. 고요하면 집중하게 됩니다. 집중이 풍성한 열매를 맺는 비결입니다(요 15:2). 집중하면 많은 일을 하지 않고도 풍성한 열매가 자라는 것을 보게 됩니다.

아프리카 격언에 “인내하는 사람만이 익은 곡식을 수확한다.”라는 말이 있습니다. 인내는 아무것도 하지 않는 것 같지만 사실은 인내하는 동안에 곡식은 자랍니다. 서두르면 초조해집니다. 서두르면 일을 그르치게 됩니다. 안셀름 그륀은 “우리는 미친 듯이 서두르면서 우리의 삶을 망쳐놓고 있다. 서두름은 우리를 아프게 한다. 서두름은 늘 영혼을 텅 비게 한다.”라고 말합니다.

속도를 조금 늦추십시오. 조용한 시간을 만들어 성경을 읽으십시오. 좋은 책을 읽으십시오. 책을 읽으라고 권면하면 바빠서 책 읽을 시간이 없다고 말하는 분들을 만납니다. 사실은 책을 읽지 않기 때문에 정신없이 바쁜 것입니다. 성경을 읽고, 책을 읽는 사람들에게는 축적된 지혜가 있습니다. 그들은 분별력과 통찰력과 판단력이 탁월합니다. 예견력이 탁월합니다. 문제해결 능력이 탁월합니다. 위기관리 능력이 탁월합니다. 그래서 어떤 문제에 직면하더라도 당황하지 않고 고요하게 일을 처리합니다. 또한 자신의 한계를 넘어선 일들은 하나님께 맡기고 내려놓을 줄 압니다.

몸이 너무 아파 응급실에 가야 할 상황이라면 서둘러 응급실로 가십시오. 그런 상황이 아니라면 조금 속도를 늦추십시오. 소중한 것은 모두 시간이 필요합니다. 인내가 필요합니다. 이탈리아 격언에 “인내심이 없는 사람은 사랑을 하지 못한다.”라고 말합니다. 사랑한다는 것은 오래 참는 것입니다(고전 13:4). 서둘러 먹으면 체한다는 말이 있습니다. 조금씩 속도를 줄이십시오. 맛을 음미하듯이 삶을 음미하십시오. 사랑하기 위해 속도를 늦추십시오. 서두르지 마시고 하나님이 열어 주시는 길들을 따라가십시오. 서두르지 않는 지혜로 풍성한 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom of Living Without Haste

Our lives are shaped by what we cherish. I hold books dear. The reason is that through books, God has made my lifOur greatest concern is of impatience. A serious issue among modern people is the rush to make money quickly. It's about seeking easy ways to earn money, trying to achieve success through shortcuts. Therefore, they hurry, they become impatient. The wisdom taught by proverbs is a warning against impatience. “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5). “A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly” (Proverbs 14:29).

Some level of haste is understandable. However, excessive haste is the problem. Abba Poemen the Great once said, “Everything that goes to excess comes from the demons” Excess leads to speeding. Excessive speed is the cause of derailment. It diverts one from the right path. Excessive speed darkens the eyes of the soul. Excessive speed deafens the ears. It’s a speed that cannot be halted. Speed that is too fast to halt leads to death. The best car is the one with good brakes. In dangerous situations or when you need to change direction, a good car is one that can come to a stop safely.

The three temptations that Jesus received from the devil were all temptations related to acceleration and speeding. The first was to turn stones into bread. The second was to become famous in an instant. The third was to gain all the glory of the world in an instant. Bread cannot be made in a day. A farmer must sow the seeds and patiently cultivate them for a long time. Weeds need to be pulled out, and the crops need to be watered appropriately. One must endure the scorching summer and withstand typhoons and storms. Only then can there be a harvest in the autumn. However, the devil tempted him to bypass this process and seek instant results through acceleration.

As a pastor, I also face the same temptation repeatedly. Every pastor desires the church to grow quickly and for people to change rapidly. However, it doesn't always happen as pastors wish. There is a time for everything. Often, God accomplishes his plans after making us wait for a long time. When God brings something to pass quickly, it is often after a prolonged period of waiting, when the time is right (Isaiah 60:22).

If you are in a hurry, you cannot truly comprehend. Enlightenment comes when you pause. The term “sagacity” means to understand. Understanding is closely linked to perception. To perceive, you must pause. When you halt, you can observe. You also need to pause to listen. The word “understand” is a compound of “under” and “stand.” To understand, you must halt and examine with a lower posture. Furthermore, you must delve into the root of the issue, much like inspecting the roots of a tree. Lowering your posture allows you to see better. Lowering your posture leads to deep enlightenment.

When people are anxious, they tend to accelerate even more. Anxiety is like a spring of acceleration. An anxious person cannot stop, often leading to a worse direction in their haste. The wisdom of life lies in patience, in waiting, and in preparing day by day while waiting. It's about learning and building good relationships during the waiting period. It's about praying while waiting. It's about giving time for God to work while waiting. Deep enlightenment is born in tranquility. Waiting brings tranquility. Tranquility brings clarity. Tranquility brings brightness. Tranquility leads to focus. Concentration is the key to bearing abundant fruit (John 15:2). Through concentration, you witness abundant fruit growing without the need for excessive effort.

There is an African proverb that says, “A patient man will eat ripe fruit.” Patience may seem like doing nothing, but in reality, it's during moments of patience that crops grow. Hurrying makes us anxious and prone to mistakes. Anselm Grün once said, “We are ruining our lives by rushing madly. Haste makes us sick. Haste always empties our soul.”

Please slow down a little. Create some quiet time to read the Bible and good books. When I recommend reading books, I often encounter people who say they're too busy to read. In reality, their busyness comes from not reading books. Those who regularly read the Bible and books accumulate wisdom. They have excellent discernment, insight, and judgment. Their foresight is remarkable, and they excel at problem-solving. Their crisis management skills are exceptional. As a result, when they face challenges, they handle them calmly without panic. Additionally, they know how to entrust tasks that go beyond their capabilities to God.

If your body is in severe pain and requires a visit to the emergency room, please go to the emergency room promptly. However, if it's not an urgent situation, consider slowing down a bit. Precious things often require time, and patience is needed. An Italian proverb states, “Those without patience cannot love.” Love often means enduring for a long time (1 Corinthians 13:4). There's a saying that rushing through meals can lead to illness. So, take small steps to slow down and savor life as if you were savoring a delicate flavor. Slow down to cultivate love. Don't rush; instead, follow the paths that God opens for you. My hope is for you to live an abundant life guided by the wisdom of not hurrying.
