[목회서신] 선인장의 가시 속에 담긴 하나님의 지혜 | God’s Wisdom Hidden in the Thorns of a Cactus

   하나님의 지혜는 성경뿐 아니라 자연 속에도 고스란히 담겨 있습니다. 하나님의 창조의 손길은 크고 위대한 것뿐 아니라, 아주 작고 세미한 것에도 또렷이 드러납니다. 씨앗 하나, 가시 하나에도 하나님의 영광이 숨어 있습니다. 특히 사와로 선인장의 가시와 꽃, 그리고 열매는 하나님의 섬세한 지혜와 풍성하신 은혜를 깊이 묵상하게 합니다.

사와로 선인장에는 가시가 있습니다. 가시만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 가시 사이에 핀 아름다운 꽃이 있습니다. 또한 꽃이 지고 나면 열매를 맺습니다. 열매 안에는 약 2,000개의 작은 씨앗이 담겨 있습니다. 작은 씨앗을 묵상할 때마다 씨앗 속에 담아두신 하나님의 풍부하심과 관대하심에 감탄하게 됩니다. 씨앗이 씨앗을 낳고, 또 다른 씨앗을 낳는 그 신비를 묵상하면 가슴이 뜁니다.

결핍의 그림자가 드리울 때, 저는 씨앗을 묵상하며 마음의 창을 엽니다. 씨앗을 묵상하면 결핍 의식을 풍부 의식으로 바꿀 수 있습니다. 하나님의 풍부하심을 가슴에 품을 수 있습니다. 그 순간 마음이 부요해지고, 존재마저 넉넉해집니다. 풍성하신 하나님 앞에 나아가 저의 필요한 것을 구합니다. “나의 하나님이 그리스도 예수 안에서 영광 가운데 그 풍성한 대로 너희 모든 쓸 것을 채우시리라”(빌 4:19). 저는 빌립보서 4장 19절을 붙잡고 기도하는 중에 어려운 목회와 이민 생활에서 승리할 수 있었습니다.

하나님의 영광은 작은 씨앗뿐만 아니라 작은 가시 속에도 담겨 있습니다. 사와로 선인장 글을 읽으신 분이 “선인장에는 가시가 있어요.”라는 답신을 주셨습니다. 그래서 가시를 묵상했습니다. 가시를 공부했습니다. 선인장뿐 아니라, 아름다운 장미에도, 고슴도치에게도 가시가 있습니다. 바울은 육체의 가시를 안고 살았습니다. 왜 하나님이 창조하신 선인장에는 가시가 있을까요? 왜 아름다운 장미에 가시가 있을까요? 왜 하나님은 사도 바울에게 육체의 가시를 허락하셨을까요? 가시를 통해 배울 수 있는 하나님의 지혜는 무엇일까요?

첫째, 가시는 자신을 보호하는 경계입니다. 사막의 뜨거운 태양 아래 선인장은 가시를 세워 자신의 수분을 지킵니다. 가시는 단순한 방어 기제가 아니라 생존의 지혜입니다. 적은 이슬을 간직하기 위해, 강한 햇살로부터 자신의 몸을 보호하기 위해 가시를 세웁니다. 선인장에게 있어 가시는 경계와 같습니다. 경계를 침범하지 못하게 만들기 위해 선인장은 가시를 세웁니다. ‘가시’는 자신을 보호하는 경계입니다. 사람과 사람 사이에도 경계가 필요합니다. 가까운 부부 사이에도 경계가 필요합니다. 경계를 통해 서로를 존중합니다. 경계를 통해 무례한 행동을 조심하게 됩니다. 서로의 경계를 인정하고 존중할 때 관계는 오랫동안 유지되고 발전하고 성숙합니다.

둘째, 가시는 꽃을 보호해 주기 위해 존재합니다. 사와로 선인장의 꽃은 가시 사이에서 피어납니다. 가시 사이에 피어나는 꽃은 선인장의 줄기 꼭대기나 팔처럼 생긴 가지의 끝부분에 피어납니다. 가시는 꽃봉오리를 초기 단계에 보호해 주는 역할을 합니다. 꽃봉오리가 잘 보호되어야 나중에 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다. 가시 사이에 피는 꽃은 고통 중에 피어나는 은혜의 상징입니다. 가시가 없으면 꽃도 없습니다. 가시의 신비요, 가시의 역설입니다. 사도 바울에게 있었던 육체의 가시는 그가 자만하지 않도록 보호해 주었습니다. 그를 겸손하게 만들어 그리스도의 향기를 풍기도록 만들어 주었습니다. 성령의 열매가 맺히도록 이끄셨습니다(갈 5:22-23).

셋째, 가시는 열매를 맺기 위해 존재합니다. 사와로 선인장의 줄기와 가지는 열매가 맺히는 곳입니다. 이 줄기 전체가 가시로 덮여 있습니다. 가시는 선인장이 자라고, 꽃이 피고, 열매가 맺히기까지의 전 과정을 외부로부터 보호합니다. 가시는 초식동물, 새, 곤충이 자라지 않은 꽃봉오리와 어린 열매를 해치지 않도록 막아주는 울타리입니다. 모든 것이 연결되어 있습니다. 가시와 꽃이 연결되어 있고, 꽃과 열매가 연결되어 있습니다. 가시가 없으면 꽃도 없습니다. 꽃이 없으면 열매도 없습니다.

가시를 묵상하다가 가시 면류관을 쓰신 예수님을 묵상하게 되었습니다. 아담의 죄와 함께 등장하는 것이 “가시덤불”(창 3:18)입니다. 가시는 상처를 줍니다. 고통을 줍니다. 그런데 마지막 아담이신 예수님이 가시 면류관을 쓰시고 십자가에서 못 박혀 죽으시고 부활하십니다. 예수님은 아담으로 인해 임한 죄와 저주, 가시덤불을 해결하시기 위해 오셨습니다. 한 알의 밀이 되어 죽으시고, 부활을 통해 풍성한 생명의 열매를 맺으셨습니다.

가시 면류관이 없으면 영광의 면류관도 없습니다. 가시 면류관이 없으면 그리스도의 향기도 없습니다. 부활의 열매도 없습니다. 가시 면류관을 쓰신 예수님을 떠올리며, 우리는 고난과 수치 속에 숨겨진 하나님의 구속의 능력을 바라보게 됩니다. 가시 없는 꽃은 없고, 꽃 없이 맺히는 열매도 없습니다. 가시 속에 감추어진 하나님의 지혜와 역설의 은혜를 배워, 우리의 삶에도 고난 중에 피는 꽃과 생명의 열매가 맺히기를 간절히 소망합니다.

God’s Wisdom Hidden in the Thorns of a Cactus

  God’s wisdom is revealed not only in the Scriptures but also intricately embedded in nature. His creative hand is evident not only in grand and majestic things but also in the smallest and most delicate details. The glory of God is hidden even in a single seed or a solitary thorn. In particular, the thorns, flowers, and fruit of the saguaro cactus offer a deep reflection on God’s delicate wisdom and abundant grace.

The saguaro cactus has thorns. But not only thorns—it also bears beautiful flowers between them. When the flowers fall, fruit is formed. Inside the fruit are about 2,000 tiny seeds. Every time I meditate on these seeds, I am awed by the abundance and generosity God has hidden within them. Seeds beget seeds, which in turn beget more seeds—and this mystery makes my heart leap.

When the shadow of lack falls upon me, I turn to the seeds and open the window of my heart. Through meditating on seeds, I am able to replace a mindset of scarcity with one of abundance. I can embrace the fullness of God in my heart. In that moment, my heart becomes rich, and my entire being is saturated with contentment. I come before our abundant God and ask for what I need: "And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). Holding onto Philippians 4:19 in prayer has helped me overcome many challenges in both ministry and immigrant life.

God’s glory is not only hidden in small seeds but also in small thorns. After reading my reflection on the saguaro cactus, someone replied, “But the cactus has thorns.” So I began to meditate on thorns. I studied them. Not only cacti, but even beautiful roses and hedgehogs have thorns. The apostle Paul lived with a thorn in his flesh. Why did God create cacti with thorns? Why do beautiful roses bear thorns? Why did God allow Paul to have a thorn in his flesh? What wisdom can we learn from these thorns?

First, thorns serve as boundaries for protection. Under the scorching desert sun, the cactus raises its thorns to preserve its moisture. These thorns are not merely a defense mechanism—they are a wisdom of survival. To retain the scarce dew and shield itself from intense sunlight, the cactus grows thorns. For the cactus, thorns are like boundaries. They keep others from crossing into vital territory. Thorns serve as boundaries of self-protection. Even in close relationships—such as between couples—boundaries are necessary. Boundaries help us honor each other. Boundaries remind us to be mindful of our actions. When we acknowledge and honor one another’s boundaries, relationships last, grow, and mature.

Second, thorns exist to protect the flower. The flowers of the saguaro cactus bloom among the thorns. These blossoms appear at the top of the main stem or at the ends of the arm-like branches. The thorns play a protective role during the flower bud’s early stages. Without such protection, there can be no fruit. Flowers blooming among thorns are symbols of grace blossoming amid pain. Without thorns, there are no flowers. This is the mystery and paradox of thorns. The thorn in Paul’s flesh kept him from becoming conceited. It humbled him and enabled him to carry the fragrance of Christ. It led him to bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23).

Third, thorns exist for the sake of fruit-bearing. The stem and arms of the saguaro cactus are the places where fruit is formed. These structures are entirely covered in thorns. Thorns protect the cactus throughout its growth, blooming, and fruit-bearing processes. They serve as a fence that guards the undeveloped buds and young fruit from herbivores, birds, and insects. Everything is connected: thorns are connected to flowers, and flowers are connected to fruit. Without thorns, there are no flowers. Without flowers, there is no fruit.

As I meditated on thorns, I was led to meditate on Jesus, who wore a crown of thorns. When Adam sinned, “thorns and thistles” appeared (Genesis 3:18). Thorns bring wounds. They bring pain. But the last Adam, Jesus, wore a crown of thorns, was crucified, and rose again. Jesus came to redeem the sin, curse, and thorns that entered through Adam. He became a grain of wheat that fell and died, and through His resurrection, bore the abundant fruit of life.

Without the crown of thorns, there is no crown of glory. Without the crown of thorns, there is no fragrance of Christ. There is no fruit of resurrection. As we remember Jesus who wore the crown of thorns, we glimpse God’s redemptive power hidden in suffering and shame. There is no flower without thorns, and no fruit without flowers. May we learn the wisdom of God and the grace of paradox hidden in thorns. And may our lives, too, blossom with flowers in the midst of suffering and bear the fruit of life.
