[목회서신] 십자가의 길 | The Way of the Cross

십자가는 길입니다. 하나님께 나아가는 길이며, 사람들을 서로 연결시켜 주는 길입니다. 길이란 도(道)를 의미합니다. 바울은 십자가의 도에 대해 말합니다. “십자가의 도가 멸망하는 자들에게는 미련한 것이요 구원을 받는 우리에게는 하나님의 능력이라”(고전 1:18). 십자가의 길은 우리를 구원하는 길입니다. 십자가의 길은 하나님의 능력이 임하는 길입니다. 고난 주간을 맞이해서 예수님이 걸어가신 십자가의 길을 깊이 묵상하길 원합니다.

첫째, 십자가의 길은 고난의 길입니다. 고난에는 뜻이 있습니다. 십자가의 고난을 통해 보혈이 흘러 나왔습니다(요 19:34). 보혈은 우리 죄를 정결케 합니다. 보혈은 사단을 이기는 능력입니다(계 12:11). 보혈은 하나님께 담대히 나아갈 수 있는 능력입니다(히 10:19). 보혈은 우리를 대속하는 능력입니다(벧전 1:18-19). 보혈은 우리 상처를 치유하는 능력입니다. 우리 상처를 진주로 만드는 능력입니다. 상처가 없으면 진주도 없습니다. 상처가 없으면 새로운 생명의 탄생도 없습니다. 어머니가 자녀를 낳을 때 자궁은 상처를 받습니다. 자궁의 상처를 통해 아이는 태어납니다. 고난은 하나님의 신비입니다. 하나님은 고난을 통해 놀라운 일을 이루십니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 고난을 성경적으로 해석하고, 긍정적으로 해석해야 합니다. 또한 고난을 잘 수용하고, 잘 반응할 줄 알아야 합니다. 고난 속에는 하나님이 감춰놓으신 변장 된 축복이 담겨 있습니다.

둘째, 십자가의 길은 고독한 길입니다. 외로운 길입니다. 아무도 함께 갈 수 없는 길입니다. 예수님이 십자가를 지실 때 예수님의 제자들은 모두 다 예수님을 버렸습니다(막 14:27). 예수님을 파는 제자도 있었고, 예수님을 세 번이나 부인한 제자도 있었습니다. 예수님을 따라가는 그리스도의 제자들은 예수님처럼 고독한 길을 걸어갈 수 있어야 합니다. A. W. 토저는 “역사상 위대한 사람들은 대부분 외로웠다. 고독은 성도가 성도로 살아가기 위해 지불해야 할 한 가지 대가인 것 같다.”고 말했습니다. 또한 그는 “예수 그리스도가 십자가를 향해 고독한 발걸음을 옮기실 때 그분의 주변을 따르던 무수한 군중은 그분의 고독을 조금도 덜어 드리지 못했다.”고 말했습니다.

셋째, 십자가의 길은 사랑의 길입니다. 사랑은 희생입니다. 누군가를 사랑한다는 것은 사랑하는 대상을 위해 희생한다는 것을 의미합니다. 억지로 희생하는 것이 아니라 자원해서 희생하는 것입니다. 기쁨으로 희생하는 것입니다. 예수님은 억지로 십자가를 지신 것이 아닙니다. 자원해서 스스로 십자가를 지신 것입니다(요 10:18). 예수님은 죄인을 위한 사랑 때문에 십자가를 지신 것입니다. 하나님의 사랑은 예수님의 십자가에서 절정을 이루었습니다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라”(롬 5:8). 예수님의 사랑은 동사입니다. 예수님의 사랑은 자신의 몸을 희생제물로 내어주신 사랑입니다. “그리스도께서 너희를 사랑하신 것 같이 너희도 사랑 가운데서 행하라 그는 우리를 위하여 자신을 버리사 향기로운 제물과 희생제물로 하나님께 드리셨느니라”(엡 5:2).

예수님의 십자가가 우리를 변화시킬 수 있는 것은 사랑 때문입니다. 예수님의 고난은 인간이 경험할 수 있는 모든 고난의 총체입니다. 예수님의 고난은 우리에게 보배와 같습니다. 하지만 예수님의 고난이 우리를 변화시킨 것이 아니라 고난 속에 담긴 예수님의 사랑이 우리를 변화시킨 것입니다. 사랑 없는 고난도 있습니다. 사랑 없이도 십자가를 진 사람들이 있습니다. 예수님의 십자가의 좌우편에 못박힌 강도들은 사랑 때문에 십자가를 진 것이 아닙니다. 예수님의 십자가가 큰 능력이 있는 것은 예수님의 사랑 때문입니다.

넷째, 십자가의 길은 부활의 길입니다. 십자가 없는 부활은 없습니다. 십자가 없는 부활의 영광은 없습니다. 영광의 면류관은 가시 면류관을 통해 주어집니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 죽으시고 부활하실 것을 아셨습니다(막 8:31). 예수님은 십자가를 지실 때 절망 중에 십자가를 지신 것이 아닙니다. 소망 중에 십자가를 지신 것입니다. 자포자기 하는 마음으로 십자가를 지신 것이 아닙니다. 앞에 있는 즐거움을 바라보시면서 십자가를 참으신 것입니다. “그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사”(히 12:2).

다섯째, 십자가의 길은 천국에 이르는 길입니다. 우리가 예수님을 믿는 순간 우리는 천국을 경험하게 됩니다. 천국은 하나님의 통치를 의미합니다. 하나님이 통치하는 곳이 바로 천국입니다. 우리가 예수님을 영접할 때 하나님이 우리 마음을 통치하시게 됩니다. 하나님께 우리 마음의 보좌를 내어 드릴 때 우리는 천국을 경험하게 됩니다. 또한 우리가 이 땅을 떠날 때 우리는 천국으로 들어가게 됩니다. 예수님은 제자들이 보는 자리에서 하늘로 승천하셨습니다(눅 24:50-51). 우리는 십자가를 통해 부활의 소망과 천국 소망을 갖게 되었습니다. 그래서 예수님의 십자가의 길은 우리에게 복된 길입니다.

The Way of the Cross

The cross is the way. It is a way to God and a way to connect people to each other. The way can mean a message. Paul speaks of the message of the cross. “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18). The way of the cross is the way to salvation. The way of the cross is the way of God's power. For this Passion Week, I want us to meditate deeply on the way of the cross that Jesus walked.

First, the way of the cross is the way of suffering. Suffering has meaning. The blood flowed out through the sufferings of the cross (John 19:34). The blood purifies our sins. The blood is the power to overcome Satan (Revelation 12:11). The blood of Jesus has the power to come to God with boldness (Hebrews 10:19). The blood has the power to redeem us (1 Peter 1:18-19). The blood has the power to heal our wounds. It has the power to turn our wounds into pearls. Without wounds, there are no pearls. Without wounds, there is no birth of new life. When a mother gives birth to a child, her uterus is wounded. Through a wound in the uterus, a child is born. Suffering is a mystery of God. God does amazing things through suffering. For this reason, we must interpret suffering biblically and positively. You also need to be able to accept sufferings and respond well. Suffering contains the blessings God has hidden.

Second, the way of the cross is a way of loneliness. It's a lonely path. It's a path that no one can go together on. When Jesus was crucified, all of Jesus' disciples abandoned him (Mark 14:27). There was a disciple who sold Jesus, and there was a disciple who denied Jesus three times. The disciples of Christ who follow him must be able to walk the lonely path like Jesus. A. W. Tozer said, “Most of the world’s great souls have been lonely. Loneliness seems to be one price the saint must pay for his saintliness.” He also said, “When Jesus Christ was treading his lonely way to the cross, his deep loneliness unrelieved by the presence of the multitudes.”

Third, the way of the cross is the way of love. Love is sacrifice. To love someone means to sacrifice for the one you love. It is not a forced sacrifice, but a voluntary sacrifice. It is sacrificing with joy. Jesus did not force himself to be crucified. He himself voluntarily took up the cross (John 10:18). Jesus died on the cross out of love for sinners. God's love reached its climax at the cross. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Jesus' love is a verb. The love of Jesus is the love in which he offered his own body as a sacrifice. “And live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2).

It is because of love that the cross of Jesus can change us. The sufferings of Jesus are the sum total of all suffering that human beings can experience. Jesus' suffering is like treasure for us. However, the suffering of Jesus did not change us, but the love of Jesus in the suffering changed us. There are hardships without love. There are people who have taken up the cross without love. The robbers who were crucified on the left and right sides of the cross of Jesus did not carry the cross because of love. There is great power on the cross because of the love of Jesus.

Fourth, the way of the cross is the way of resurrection. There is no resurrection without the cross. There is no glory of resurrection without the cross. The crown of glory is given through the crown of thorns. Jesus knew that He would die on the cross and rise again (Mark 8:31). When Jesus took up the cross, he did not carry it out of despair. He bore the cross in hope. He did not carry the cross out of desperation. He endured the cross while looking at the joy ahead. “Who for the joy set before him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2).

Fifth, the way of the cross is the way to heaven. The moment we believe in Jesus, we experience heaven. Heaven means the reign of God. Heaven is the place where God reigns. When we accept Jesus, God will rule our hearts. When we surrender our heart's throne to God, we experience heaven. Also, when we leave this earth, we enter heaven. Jesus ascended to heaven from the sight of his disciples (Luke 24:50-51). Through the cross, we have the hope of resurrection and the hope of heaven. So, the way of the cross of Jesus is a blessed way for us.
