[목회서신] 아름다운 성품 속에 담긴 하나님의 지혜 | The Wisdom of God Contained in a Beautiful Character

저는 새해를 맞이할 때마다 새 목표를 설정합니다. 제가 설정한 목표를 다 이루지 못할 때도 있습니다. 그래도 낙심하지 않습니다. 다시 목표를 세우고 다시 도전합니다. 그렇게 반복하다 보면 어느 날 제가 집중한 목표 몇 가지를 성취하게 됩니다. 인생이란 완벽하지 않습니다. 마음먹은 대로 모두 되는 것이 아닙니다. 인생이란 씨앗을 뿌리는 것과 같습니다. 농부가 씨앗을 뿌릴 때는 많이 뿌리는 것이 좋습니다. 하지만 농부가 뿌린 씨앗을 다 거둘 수는 없습니다.

연어 한 마리가 3천 개의 정도의 알을 낳습니다. 3천 개 정도의 알 중에서 살아남아 모천(母川)으로 다시 돌아오는 연어는 3마리에서 4마리 정도라고 합니다. 하지만 연어는 낙심하지 않고 여전히 알을 낳고 재생산을 반복합니다. 중요한 것은 포기하지 않는 것입니다. 중요한 것은 반복하는 것입니다. 계속해서 횟수를 늘여가는 것입니다.

우리 교회가 새해에 집중해서 갖게 된 목표는 아름다운 성품을 배우고 익히는 것입니다. “아름다운 성품으로 섬기는 축복공동체”가 되는 것입니다. 제가 성품에 관심을 더욱 갖게 된 이유가 있습니다. 아름다운 성품이 주는 유익 때문입니다. 행복 때문입니다. 저는 한때 성공에 관심이 많았습니다. 젊은 때는 성공적인 목회자가 되고 싶었습니다. 성공적인 목회자가 되는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 물으신다면 대답할 말이 없습니다. 왜냐하면 사람마다 성공에 대한 정의가 다르기 때문입니다. 대답하긴 어렵지만 제게는 성공에 대한 갈망이 있었습니다. 그것은 제 어린 시절이 가난했던 까닭입니다.

제가 철이 들면서 성공이란 것이 얼마나 그 무게가 무거운지를 깨닫게 되었습니다. 성공이 얼마나 위험한지도 깨닫게 되었습니다. 수많은 사람들이 성공 때문에, 또한 성공 후에 무너져가는 것을 보았습니다. 성공을 잘 지킬 수 있는 사람은 많지 않습니다. 성공은 달콤합니다. 매력적입니다. 화려합니다. 하지만 성공의 달콤한 만큼 감당해야 할 삶의 무게는 무겁습니다. 성품이 성공을 받쳐주지 않으면 성공은 축복이 아니라 저주가 될 수도 있습니다. 성품이 결여된 사람도 성공하는 것을 봅니다. 나쁜 사람도 부자가 되고, 권세를 누리는 것을 봅니다. 하지만 그들의 마지막은 비참합니다. 나쁜 사람의 소유를 부러워할 사람은 있을지 몰라도 그의 삶을 부러워할 사람은 없습니다.

성공의 무게가 무겁다고 성공을 폄하해서는 안 됩니다. 성공에 도전하는 것을 너무 일찍 포기해서도 안 됩니다. 성공도 하나님의 아이디어입니다. 하나님은 우리가 성공적인 삶을 살기를 원하십니다. 하나님이 원하시는 성공은 성품을 겸비한 성공입니다. 만민의 생명을 살리는 성공입니다. 섬김을 위한 성공입니다. 성공과 성품이 조화를 이루면 정말 아름다운 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 성공을 섬김의 도구로 사용할 수 있다면 성공은 정말 멋있는 일입니다.

하나님의 관심은 성공보다 성품에 있습니다. 하나님이 우리 인생을 평가하는 것은 성공이 아니라 성품입니다. 특별히 신약 성경에서는 성공에 대한 언급은 없지만 성품을 거듭 강조합니다. 그 이유가 무엇일까요? 하나님의 지혜가 바로 아름다운 성품 속에 담겨 있기 때문입니다. 아름다운 성품은 역경을 역전시킬 수 있는 능력입니다. 아름다운 성품은 위기를 기회로 만들 수 있는 능력입니다. 아름다운 성품은 실패를 통해 배우고, 실패를 딛고 재기할 수 있는 능력입니다.

제가 경험한 것은 아름다운 성품이 결국 성공을 낳는다는 것입니다. 하나님을 통해 배우는 가장 소중한 성품 중의 하나는 성실입니다. 하나님은 성실하십니다. 또한 우리도 성실하길 원하십니다. 성실이란 성품을 한마디로 정의하기 어렵습니다. 성경은 다윗의 마음을 성실하다고 표현합니다. “이에 저가 그 마음의 성실함으로 기르고 그 손의 공교함으로 지도하였도다”(시 78:72, 개역한글). 갈렙의 성품도 성실했습니다. “내 나이 사십 세에 여호와의 종 모세가 가데스 바네아에서 나를 보내어 이 땅을 정탐하게 하였으므로 내가 성실한 마음으로 그에게 보고하였고”(수 14:7).

성실은 영어로 integrity(인테그리티)입니다. “인테그리티”는 나뉘지 않고 잘 조화를 이룬 성품을 의미합니다. 진정성이라고 표현할 수 있습니다. 성실은 진실한 성품입니다. 신실한 성품입니다. 한결같은 성품입니다. 꾸준한 성품입니다. 끈기 있는 성품입니다. 감정에 쉽게 요동치지 않는 성품입니다. 작은 것에 충성된 성품입니다. 작은 것을 폄하하지 않고, 작은 것을 소중히 여기는 성품입니다. 성실한 사람은 반복을 소중히 여깁니다. 물론 실수를 반복하는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 성실한 사람은 창조적인 반복을 합니다. 피드백을 들어가며 더 나은 쪽으로 반복합니다. 그러는 과정에서 탁월함에 이르게 됩니다. 자신의 분야에 어느 경지에 이르게 됩니다. 득도(得道)와 득음(得音)의 경지에 이르게 됩니다. 고수(高手)의 경지에 이르게 됩니다. 새해를 맞이하는 우리가 성실한 성품을 형성했으면 좋겠습니다. 성실한 성품은 태도와 같아서 우리가 선택할 수 있습니다. 또한 성령님의 도움을 받아 꾸준히 성실한 성품을 개발할 수 있습니다. 성실한 성품을 통해 하나님의 기쁘신 뜻을 이루시길 빕니다. 성실한 성품을 통해 수많은 사람을 섬기는 형통하는 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom of God Contained in a Beautiful Character

Every new year, I set new goals. Sometimes, I don't achieve all of them. But I do not get discouraged. When the new year arrives, I set new goals and challenge myself again. Through repetition, I eventually achieved some of the focused goals. Life is not perfect. It doesn't always go as planned. It is like a farmer sowing seeds; not all seeds sown will be harvested.

A single salmon lays about three thousand eggs. Of those, only three or four return to their spawning ground. Yet, the salmon does not despair; it continues to spawn and reproduce. What matters is not giving up. What matters is perseverance. With a faithful heart, one should not become preoccupied with results but rather keep increasing the attempts.

Our church has set the new year's goal to be "A Blessed Community Serving with Beautiful Character." There's a reason I became more interested in character. The reason is because of the diverse benefits and happiness that a beautiful character provides. I used to be very interested in success. I wanted to be a successful pastor. If you ask me what it means to be a successful pastor, I have no answer. This is because each pastor has a different definition of success. It's hard to answer, but I had a thirst for success. This desire stemmed from poverty in my childhood.

As I matured, I realized the heavy burden of success. I also realized the dangers of success. I have seen countless people fall apart because of or after achieving success. Not many can handle success well. Success is sweet, attractive, and glamorous, but it comes with a heavy life burden. Success can be a curse rather than a blessing if your character does not support it. I've seen people who lack good character achieve worldly success. Bad people become rich and powerful, but their ends are often miserable. While some might envy the possessions of the bad, no one envies their lives.

The weight of success should not lead us to belittle success. Nor should we give up on striving for success too soon. Most parents desire their children to be successful. Success is also an idea from God. God wants us to live successful lives. The success that God desires is success accompanied by character. It is a success that saves lives. It is success for the purpose of service. It is success that makes us the light and salt of the world. When success and character are in harmony, one can truly live a beautiful life. If success can be used as a tool for service, then it is a truly splendid thing.

God is more interested in character than success. In evaluating our lives, God looks at character, not success. Particularly in the New Testament, there is no mention of success, but character is repeatedly emphasized. Why is that? Because God's wisdom is contained within a beautiful character. A beautiful character has the power to turn adversity into opportunity. It has the power to transform crises into opportunities. It has the power to learn from failure and to rise again after falling.

What I have experienced is that a beautiful character ultimately leads to success. One of the most precious characteristics we learn through God is integrity (성실). God has integrity. He also wants us to have integrity. Integrity, defined in a word, is difficult. The Bible describes David as having an integrity of heart: "And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them." (Psalm 78:72). Caleb's heart was also described as such: "I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly." (Joshua 14:8b).

"성실" in English is integrity. "Integrity" means a character that is undivided and well-balanced. It can be expressed as authenticity. Integrity is a truthful character. A faithful character. A consistent character. A steadfast character. A persistent character. A character not easily swayed by emotions. A character that is faithful in small things. A character that does not belittle small things but treasures them. A person of integrity values repetition. This does not mean repeating mistakes, of course. A person of integrity repeats creatively. They repeat towards improvement while receiving feedback. In this process, they achieve excellence. They reach a level in their field. They reach the level of true understanding (得道) and mastery of their craft (得音). They reach the status of a master (高手). As we welcome the New Year, I hope we can form a sincere character. Integrity, like attitude, is a choice we can make. Also, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can continually develop integrity of character. I pray that through integrity, we may fulfill God's delightful will. I pray that through an integrity of character, may you live a prosperous life, serving many people.
