[목회서신] 어떤 것은 시간을 통과해야만 아름다워집니다 | Some Things Take Time to Become Beautiful

    우리는 아름다운 것을 좋아합니다. 아름다운 꽃을 좋아하고, 아름다운 음악을 좋아합니다. 아름다운 사람을 만나면 마음이 따뜻해집니다. 그런데 참으로 아름다운 것은 하루아침에 만들어지지 않습니다. 어떤 것은 반드시 시간을 통과해야만 아름다워집니다. 오래된 나무가 아름다운 것은 오랜 세월 비바람을 견뎌냈기 때문입니다. 진주는 하루아침에 만들어지지 않습니다. 한 사람의 깊은 성품도 하루아침에 만들어지지 않습니다. 아름다움 속에는 시간과 기다림과 인내가 담겨 있습니다.

우리는 아름다움을 흔히 겉모습에서 찾습니다. 하지만 성경이 소중히 여기는 아름다움은 성품의 아름다움입니다. 겉모습의 아름다움은 세월과 함께 변하지만 성품의 아름다움은 세월과 함께 깊어질 수 있습니다. 젊었을 때보다 나이가 들수록 더 온유해지고, 더 너그러워지고, 더 따뜻해지는 사람이 있습니다. 상처를 받았지만 쓴 뿌리가 없고 다른 사람의 상처를 치유해 주는 사람이 있습니다. 고난을 많이 겪었지만 다른 사람의 아픔을 품어 주는 사람이 있습니다. 저는 그런 사람을 아름다운 사람이라고 생각합니다.

하나님이 원하시는 모습으로 성숙해 가는 것이 아름다움입니다. 그래서 아름다운 성품에는 온유가 있고 겸손이 있습니다. 절제가 있고 배려가 있습니다. 용서가 있고 사랑이 있습니다. 그리고 그 모든 성품의 밑바닥에는 인내가 있습니다. 아름다운 성품과 인내 사이에는 깊은 관계가 있습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 좋은 성품을 즉시 주시기보다 때로 시간을 통해 빚어 가십니다.

야고보도 말씀합니다. “인내를 온전히 이루라 이는 너희로 온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라”(약 1:4). 인내가 우리를 온전하게 만듭니다. 여기서 중요한 것은 “온전히 이루라”는 말씀입니다. 성숙에는 시간이 필요합니다. 하나님은 우리를 하루아침에 성숙한 사람으로 만들지 않으십니다. 하나님의 사랑은 오래 참으시는 사랑입니다. 기다리시는 사랑입니다. 기다림은 사랑이며, 지혜입니다.

어떤 것들은 기다릴 만한 가치가 있습니다. 씨앗을 심은 뒤 매일 땅을 파헤쳐 보면 열매를 얻을 수 없습니다. 씨앗을 심었으면 기다려야 합니다. 뿌리가 내리는 시간을 기다려야 합니다. 햇빛과 비를 통과하도록 기다려야 합니다. 계절을 통과하도록 기다려야 합니다.

우리의 문제는 기다리지 못하는 데 있습니다. 현대 사회는 속도를 숭배합니다. 빨리 성공하고 싶고, 빨리 응답받고 싶고, 빨리 문제가 해결되기를 원합니다. 심지어 사람도 빨리 변화하기를 원합니다. 자녀가 빨리 성숙하기를 원하고, 배우자가 빨리 달라지기를 원합니다. 교회도 빨리 성장하기를 원합니다. 하지만 속도가 언제나 성숙을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다.

빨리 자라는 것보다 깊이 뿌리내리는 것이 중요합니다. 조급함은 우리로 하여금 아직 익지 않은 열매를 따게 합니다. 서두름은 하나님의 때보다 앞서가게 만듭니다. 아브라함은 조급함 때문에 이스마엘을 얻었습니다. 반면 요셉은 오랜 시간을 기다렸습니다. 감옥에서도 기다렸습니다. 다윗도 기름부음을 받은 날 곧바로 왕이 되지 않았습니다. 광야를 통과했습니다. 사울의 추격을 받으며 인고의 세월을 견뎠습니다. 돌이켜 보면 바로 그 기다림의 시간이 그들을 하나님의 사람으로 빚었습니다.

인내란 우리가 머무는 자리에서 하나님이 이루실 일을 믿으며 현재를 충실하게 살아가는 것입니다. 그런 면에서 기다림은 수동적인 것이 아니라 현재를 충실하게 살아내는 능동적인 삶입니다. 기다림은 낭비가 아닙니다. 아기가 어머니의 태중에서 자라는 데 시간이 필요합니다. 계절이 바뀌는 데 시간이 필요합니다. 상처가 아물기까지 시간이 필요합니다. 관계가 깊어지는 데 시간이 필요합니다. 신뢰가 쌓이는 데 시간이 필요합니다. 그리고 사람이 하나님의 사람으로 빚어지는 데에도 시간이 필요합니다.

빨리 이루어지지 않는다고 낙심하지 마십시오. 지금 아무 일도 일어나지 않는다고 생각하지 마십시오. 보이지 않는다고 자라지 않는 것이 아닙니다. 씨앗은 땅속에서 먼저 자랍니다. 하나님은 보이지 않는 곳에서 먼저 일하십니다. 때로 하나님은 우리가 원하는 것을 늦추심으로 우리를 깊게 만드십니다. 응답을 기다리게 하심으로 기도를 깊게 하십니다. 사람을 기다리게 하심으로 사랑을 깊게 하십니다. 고난을 통과하게 하심으로 성품을 깊게 하십니다. 그래서 기다림에는 신비가 있습니다.

어떤 것은 시간을 통과해야만 아름다워집니다. 기다림을 견디십시오. 기다림을 사랑하십시오. 기다림 속에서 하나님을 신뢰하십시오. 하나님은 결코 서두르지 않으시지만 결코 늦지도 않으십니다. 하나님은 모든 것을 때를 따라 아름답게 하시는 분입니다(전 3:11). 아름다움에는 시간이 필요합니다. 성숙에는 인내가 필요합니다. 그리고 하나님의 사람은 기다림 속에서 빚어집니다.

Some Things Take Time to Become Beautiful

   We are drawn to beautiful things. We love beautiful flowers and beautiful music. Our hearts are warmed when we meet a beautiful person. Yet things of true beauty are not formed overnight. Some things become beautiful only after passing through time. An old tree is beautiful because it has endured years of wind and rain. A pearl is not formed overnight. Neither is the depth of a person’s character. True beauty carries within it time, waiting, and perseverance.

We often look for beauty in outward appearance. But the beauty the Bible treasures is the beauty of character. Outward beauty changes with the passing years, but the beauty of character can deepen with time. There are people who become gentler, more gracious, and warmer as they grow older. There are people who have been wounded, yet harbor no bitterness and instead bring healing to the wounds of others. There are people who have endured much suffering, yet have learned to embrace the pain of others. To me, these are truly beautiful people.

True beauty is found in becoming the person God desires us to be. That is why beautiful character is marked by gentleness and humility, self-control and thoughtfulness, forgiveness and love. And beneath all these qualities lies perseverance. There is a deep connection between beautiful character and perseverance. Rather than giving us mature character instantly, God often shapes it within us over time.

James tells us, “Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:4). Perseverance brings us to maturity. The important words here are “finish its work.” Maturity takes time. God does not make us mature overnight. God’s love is patient. It is a love that waits. Waiting is both love and wisdom.

Some things are worth waiting for. If you plant a seed and dig up the soil every day to see what is happening, you will never see its fruit. Once you plant a seed, you must wait. You must give it time to take root. You must allow it to pass through sunshine and rain. You must allow it to pass through the seasons.

Our problem is that we do not know how to wait. Modern society worships speed. We want to succeed quickly, receive answers quickly, and have our problems resolved quickly. We even expect people to change quickly. We want our children to mature quickly and our spouses to change quickly. We want our churches to grow quickly. But speed does not always mean maturity.

It is more important to be deeply rooted than to grow quickly. Impatience causes us to pick fruit before it is ripe. Haste causes us to run ahead of God’s timing. Abraham’s impatience led to Ishmael. Joseph, on the other hand, waited for many years. He waited even in prison. David did not become king immediately after he was anointed. He passed through the wilderness. He endured years of hardship while being pursued by Saul. Looking back, it was precisely those years of waiting that shaped them into men of God.

Perseverance means faithfully living in the present while trusting God for what He will accomplish in the place where we are. In that sense, waiting is not passive. It is an active way of faithfully living the life we have been given today. Waiting is not wasted time. A baby needs time to grow in its mother’s womb. Seasons need time to change. Wounds need time to heal. Relationships need time to deepen. Trust needs time to grow. And it takes time for a person to be shaped into a person of God.

Do not be discouraged because things are not happening quickly. Do not assume that nothing is happening simply because you cannot see it. Just because you cannot see growth does not mean that growth is not taking place. A seed first grows beneath the soil. God often begins His work in places we cannot see. Sometimes God deepens us by delaying what we desire. He deepens our prayers by making us wait for an answer. He deepens our love by teaching us to wait for people. He deepens our character by leading us through suffering. This is why there is a mystery in waiting.

Some things become beautiful only with time. Endure the waiting. Learn to love the waiting. Trust God in the waiting. God is never in a hurry, yet He is never late. He is the One who “has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Beauty takes time. Maturity requires perseverance. And a person of God is shaped in the waiting.
