[목회서신] 어머니의 기도에 감사드립니다! | I Give Thanks to My Mother’s Prayer!

안식월은 길고도 짧은 느낌입니다. 안식월을 시작할 때 저는 시간적인 여유가 많으리라 생각했습니다. 하지만 시간은 아주 빠르게 흘렀습니다. 이제 제2의 고향이 된 로스앤젤레스로 돌아가기 위해 준비하고 있습니다. 모국은 아름답습니다. 어느 지역을 가든지 다 아름답습니다. 모국은 아주 역동적입니다. 재미있습니다. 화려합니다. 정말 빠르게 움직입니다. 6년 만에 모국을 방문한 저희 부부는 문화충격을 경험했습니다. 그 이유는 짧은 시간에 모국이 많이 변하고 많이 발전한 까닭입니다. 힘들고 어려운 분들도 많이 있는 반면에 잘 사는 분들도 많습니다. 한국은 이제 여유 있는 나라가 되었습니다. 어떤 물건을 놓아도 가져가는 사람이 없습니다.

가난했을 때 비행기에서 덮으라고 나누어 주는 담요를 집으로 가져간 사람들의 이야기는 아주 오래된 전설이 되었습니다. 모국에 가서 방문한 모든 식당이 맛집입니다. 값이 싸고 맛이 있습니다. 배달해 주는 음식도 맛이 있습니다. 우리 민족은 배달의 민족입니다. 6.25전쟁 이후로 도움을 받았던 우리나라가 이제는 수많은 나라를 도와주는 나라가 되었습니다. 펜데믹 이후에 수많은 사람들이 한국을 방문하고 있습니다. 가는 곳마다 외국인들이 눈에 띕니다. 제주도만 일 년에 천이백만 명의 관광객이 방문한다는 말을 들었습니다.

모국 방문 중에 여러 번 설교할 기회가 주어졌습니다. 그때마다 어머니의 기도가 생각났습니다. 저는 어머니의 기도를 먹고 삽니다. 어머니는 저와 가족들과 교회를 위해 날마다 새벽 기도를 드렸습니다. 제가 목회자가 되겠다고 말씀드렸을 때 어머니는 저를 위해 평생 새벽 기도를 드리겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 어머니는 신실하게 약속을 지키셨습니다. 제가 군복무를 하는 동안 3분의 2를 교회에서 철야기도를 드리셨습니다. 기회가 있으면 산 기도를 드리셨습니다. 미국에 오실 때 어머니는 하나님으로부터 미국에 가면 교회를 개척하라는 음성을 들으셨습니다. 어머니는 교회 개척을 위해 기도하셨습니다. 그리고 저는 어머니의 기도를 따라 로고스교회와 새생명비전교회를 개척한 목회자가 되었습니다.

어머니는 제가 목회자들을 섬기는 목회자가 되길 간절히 기도하셨습니다. 목회자로 살아가는 것도 힘든 일인데 목회자들의 목회자가 되는 것은 더욱 어려운 일입니다. 어머니가 처음에 그 기도를 드릴 때 저는 당황했습니다. 하지만 어머니는 한번 기도를 시작하면 끈질기게 기도하는 분이셨습니다. 어머니의 기도는 계속되었고, 어느 날 저는 목회자들을 섬기는 목회자가 되었습니다. 어머니는 어느 날부터 하루에 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도하는 다니엘 기도를 드리셨습니다.

어머니의 기도는 간절한 기도입니다. 애절한 기도입니다. 물론 아버지의 기도도 중요합니다. 하지만 어머니의 기도가 간절한 것은 어머니는 자녀를 잉태하고 산통을 통해 출산한 까닭입니다. 또한 자녀를 젖먹이고 키우면서 자녀와 가장 많은 시간을 보내는 것이 어머니이기 때문입니다. “어머니”라는 이름은 예수님 이름 다음으로 세상에서 가장 아름답고 고귀한 이름입니다.

어머니의 기도는 사랑의 기도입니다. 사랑은 희생하는 것입니다. 사랑은 돌보는 것입니다. 사랑은 아끼는 것입니다. 아끼는 것은 키우는 것입니다. 어머니는 기도를 통해 자녀를 사랑하고, 기도를 통해 자녀를 돌봅니다. 지혜로운 어머니는 잔소리가 아닌 기도로 자녀를 키웁니다. 어머니가 기도할 때 하나님은 그 자녀를 돌보아 주십니다. 축복해 주십니다. 형통케 해 주십니다. 어머니의 기도는 자녀의 어려움을 멈추게 해 줍니다. 지혜로운 어머니는 자녀를 위해 염려할 시간에 기도합니다. 염려하면 아무 일도 일어나지 않지만 기도하면 하나님이 역사하십니다.

어머니의 기도는 맡기는 기도입니다. 어머니의 기도는 자녀를 하나님의 손에 맡기는 기도입니다. 자녀는 어머니의 손보다 하나님의 손에 있을 때 더욱 안전합니다. 하나님은 지혜로우십니다. 언제 개입하고, 언제 기다려야 하는가를 아시는 분입니다. 부모가 할 수 없는 것을 하나님은 하실 수 있습니다. 자녀들의 실수마저도 역전시킬 수 있는 분이 하나님이십니다. 그런 까닭에 자녀를 기도를 통해 하나님께 맡길 줄 아는 어머니는 지혜로운 어머니입니다.

어머니의 기도는 눈물의 기도입니다. 하나님의 마음을 움직이는 기도 중의 하나는 눈물의 기도입니다. 어머니는 자녀를 위해 눈물을 흘리며 기도합니다. 눈물은 하나님의 선물입니다. 눈물은 하나님의 보좌에서 흘러나와 하나님께로 돌아갑니다. 하나님은 어머니가 자녀를 위해 흘린 눈물을 닦아 주시는 분입니다. 어머니의 눈물의 기도는 자녀를 복되게 하는 기도입니다. 어거스틴을 변화시킨 것은 어머니 모니카의 눈물의 기도입니다. 아들이 방황하던 시절, 모니카는 암브로시우스 감독으로부터 “눈물로 기도한 자녀는 결코 망하지 않는다”라는 말을 들었습니다. 모니카는 눈물의 기도, 끈질긴 기도로 아들을 위해 기도했습니다. 방탕했던 어거스틴은 어머니의 기도를 통해 성자라고 불리우는 하나님의 사람이 되었습니다. 어머니의 기도와 함께 아버지의 기도도 중요합니다. 우리 모두 기도하는 부모가 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 안식월 동안 저희 부부를 위해 중보해 주신 성도님들에게 진심으로 감사드립니다.

I Give Thanks to My Mother’s Prayer!

This sabbatical month felt both long and short. When I started my sabbatical month, I thought I would have plenty of time. But time passed by very quickly. Now, I am preparing to return to Los Angeles, which has become my second hometown. Motherland is beautiful. No matter where you go, they are all beautiful. My home country is very dynamic. It's fun. It's gorgeous. Everything moves fast in my home country. My wife and I experienced culture shock visiting our motherland after six years. The reason is because our motherland has changed and developed a lot in such a short period of time. There are many people who are struggling and facing difficulty, but there are also many people who are living well. Korea has now become a relaxed country. No one takes anything that is left alone.

Stories of people taking the blankets that are given to use on planes are a very old legend. All the restaurants we visited in our motherland were our favorite places to eat. The food is cheap and it tastes good. The food delivered is also delicious. Our nation is a nation of delivery. Our country, which received help after the Korean War, has now become a country that helps countless countries. A lot of people are visiting Korea after the pandemic. Foreigners stand out everywhere we go. I heard that Jeju Island alone has 12 million tourists a year.

I was given several opportunities to preach during my visit to our motherland. Whenever I preached, I remembered my mother’s prayers. I live on my mother's prayers. My mother prayed every morning for me, my family, and the church. When I told her that I would become a pastor, she promised me that she would pray for me at dawn for the rest of her life. My mother faithfully kept her promise. During my military service, she prayed all night at church two-thirds of the time. When given the opportunity, she prayed in the mountains. When she came to the United States, my mother heard a voice from God to plant a church. So, my mother prayed for church planting. Then I followed my mother's prayer and planted Logos Church and New Life Vision Church.

My mother earnestly prayed that I would become a pastor who serves pastors. Living as a pastor is hard, but being a pastor of pastors is even more difficult. When my mother first prayed that, I was perplexed. But my mother, she was a persistent person once she started praying. Her prayers continued, and one day I became a pastor who serves pastors. One day my mother started praying the Daniel prayer on her knees three times a day.

A mother's prayer is an earnest prayer. It is a mournful prayer. Of course, the father's prayer is also important. But the mother's prayers were earnest because she conceived her child and gave birth through birth pain. It is also because it is the mother who spends the most time with her children, breastfeeding and raising them. The name “Mother” is the most beautiful and noble name in the world after the name of Jesus.

A mother's prayer is a prayer of love. Love is sacrificial. Love is caring. Love is to cherish. To cherish is to grow. A mother loves her children through her prayers, and cares for her children through her prayers. A wise mother raises her children in prayer, and not with nagging. When a mother prays, God takes care of her child. He blesses them. He makes them prosperous. A mother's prayers stop her child's troubles. A wise mother prays in times of worry, for her children. If you worry, nothing happens, but if you pray, God works.

A mother's prayer is an entrusting prayer. A mother's prayer is a prayer that entrusts her children into God's hands. Children are safer in God's hands than in their mother's. God is wise. He knows when to intervene and when to wait. God can do what parents cannot. God is the one who can reverse even the mistakes of our children. For this reason, a mother who knows how to entrust her children to God through prayer is wise.

A mother's prayer is a prayer of tears. One of the prayers that moves God's heart is the prayer of tears. A mother prays with tears for her child. Tears are a gift from God. Tears flow from God's throne and return to God. God is the one who wipes away the tears that a mother sheds for her children. A mother's prayer of tears is a prayer to bless her children. What changed Augustine was the tearful prayer of his mother, Monica. During her son's wanderings, Monica was told by Bishop Ambrosius, "It is impossible that the child of so many tears should perish." Monica prayed for her son with her tearful prayers and her persistent prayers. The prodigal Augustine, through the prayers of her mother, became a man of God and was called a saint. Along with the mother's prayers, the father's prayers are also important. I hope we all become praying parents. I sincerely thank the saints who interceded for us during our sabbatical month.
