Rest for a While at the Oasis of Your Soul

Rest for a While at the Oasis of Your Soul

We are afraid to stop. We fear that if we pause, we will fall behind, and if we rest, we will become lazy. So we keep running. But no one can run far without rest. A machine that never stops eventually overheats, and a battery that is never recharged will run out of power. The same is true of our souls. When our strength is depleted, we become exhausted, and prolonged exhaustion leads to burnout. A burned-out person loses vitality. Motivation fades, concentration weakens, and the joy of life begins to disappear. That is why we must pause from time to time for spiritual renewal.

Time spent recharging is never wasted. It is absolutely essential. Pausing is not giving up. It is preparing to go further. Stopping is not retreating. It is entering more deeply into the presence of God so that we may receive fresh strength. Jesus said to His disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31). Jesus teaches us that there are times when we need to stop, even if only for a little while. A brief pause can renew us. Looking up to heaven for a moment, closing our eyes and taking a deep breath, meditating on God's Word, and resting quietly in His presence—these simple moments bring life back to our souls. Why is it so important to pause?

First, when we pause, we experience stillness. Stopping is the doorway to stillness. When our bodies become still, we begin to hear the voice of our hearts. As the noise around us quiets and even the noise within us settles, we become able to hear the gentle whisper of God. We live surrounded by countless voices. Our bodies may be in one place, but our minds wander to dozens of others. What we need is more than physical rest—we need stillness. God says, “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength” (Isaiah 30:15).

Stillness is not a time of doing nothing. It is a time of trusting God. Stillness is not emptiness but a space filled with His presence. In silence we encounter ourselves, we encounter God, and we rediscover the direction of our lives. Many people are afraid of silence because it confronts them with their emptiness and hidden wounds. But stillness in the presence of God does not crush us. Instead, it heals us and makes us new.

Second, when we pause, our souls are renewed. A time of renewal is like resting at an oasis in the desert. For a traveler crossing the wilderness, an oasis is not a luxury but a necessity for survival. There the traveler drinks water, rests beneath the shade, and restores strength before continuing the journey. Our lives also need such oases. Worship is an oasis for the soul. Meditating on God's Word is an oasis for the soul. Prayer, praise, silence, and good books can also become oases for the soul. Even a walk in nature or a warm conversation with someone you love can refresh the spirit.

As we remain at the oasis, weary bodies recover, clouded minds become clear, and dry emotions come alive again. Above all, our love for God and our passion for His calling are renewed. Spiritual renewal comes as we rest in God. He is the Creator of our souls and the source of life itself. Just as an electronic device is recharged when connected to a power source, our souls are renewed when they remain connected to God. “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). As we wait upon the Lord, He gives us new strength. True rest is remaining before Him so that His power may flow into our lives.

Third, those who have been renewed become a source of life for others. We are naturally drawn to people who are full of life. Being with them gives us fresh courage and hope. But when our own energy has been exhausted, it is difficult to encourage and strengthen others. An empty cup cannot fill another cup. A dry well cannot provide water. Therefore, if we are to serve others well, we must first care for our own souls.

If we want to share the life of Christ with those we love, we must first be regularly renewed by God. The heart of spiritual renewal is remaining in Jesus. He said, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Time spent recharging is never wasted. It is time that enables us to love more deeply, serve more faithfully, walk further, and bear more abundant fruit. When you find an oasis, do not hurry away. Remain there for a while. Drink the living water. Rest in the shade. Let your soul be renewed. Fellowship with those who are resting there as well, and gain the wisdom needed for the journey ahead.

Stopping is not the end. It is a new beginning. Rest is God's gracious gift that enables us to fulfill our calling more beautifully. Make it a regular practice to pause for spiritual renewal. Then experience the true rest that is found in the embrace of Jesus. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
