[목회서신] 예수님의 “끝까지”의 사랑 | Jesus' Love of “Till the End”

고난주간을 맞이하면서 예수님의 사랑을 묵상했습니다. 예수님의 사랑을 묵상하는 중에 예수님의 사랑은 “끝까지”의 사랑이라는 진리를 깨달았습니다.

첫째, 예수님은 자기 사람들을 “끝까지” 사랑하셨습니다. “유월절 전에 예수께서 자기가 세상을 떠나 아버지께로 돌아가실 때가 이른 줄 아시고 세상에 있는 자기 사람들을 사랑하시되 끝까지 사랑하시니라”(요 13:1). 예수님은 유월절 전에 세상을 떠나 아버지께로 돌아가실 때가 이른 줄 아시고 자기 사람들을 끝까지 사랑하셨습니다. 예수님의 자기 사람들은 예수님의 제자들이었습니다. 예수님은 3년 동안 키우신 제자들을 끝까지 사랑하셔서 그들의 발을 씻어 주셨습니다.

예수님이 그들의 발을 씻어 주신 사랑 속에는 그들의 죄를 용서해 주시는 것이 포함되어 있습니다. 예수님이 십자가를 지실 때 제자들은 스승 되시는 예수님을 팔고, 부인하고, 버렸습니다. 예수님은 그들을 미리 용서하시기 위해 그들의 발을 씻어 주신 것입니다. 씻음은 용서입니다. 씻음은 정결케 함입니다. 그릇이 더러워지면 그릇이 스스로 자신을 깨끗케 할 수 없습니다. 누군가가 그 그릇을 씻어 주어야 합니다. 그릇과 같은 우리가 더러워질 때 우리 스스로 더러운 것을 씻을 수 없습니다. 더러워진 우리를 정결케 해 주실 분이 필요합니다. 그 분은 예수님이십니다. 무릎을 꿇고 용서를 빌어야 할 제자들에게 오히려 예수님이 무릎을 꿇고 그들의 죄를 용서해 주셨습니다. 정말 놀라운 사랑입니다.

둘째, 예수님의 사랑은 “끝까지” 참으시는 사랑입니다. 예수님은 십자가를 지실 때 끝까지 참으셨습니다. 예수님의 사랑은 끝까지 참으시는 사랑입니다. 사랑은 오래 참고, 모든 것을 견디는 것입니다(고전 13:4, 7). 사랑하면 오래 참습니다. 엄밀한 의미에서 사랑하는 것만큼 오래 참고, 사랑하는 것만큼 견딥니다. 엄마는 자녀를 잉태하면 오래 참고, 끝까지 견딥니다. 사랑 때문입니다. 예수님이 십자가를 지시는 중에 견디기 힘든 순간이 여러번 있었습니다. 하지만 주님은 끝까지 참으셨습니다. 예수님을 잡으러 온 사람 가운데 대제사장의 종이 있었습니다. 제자 중 한 사람이 칼로 종의 오른 쪽 귀를 떨어뜨렸습니다. 그때 예수님께서 이것까지 참으라 하시고 그 귀를 만져 낫게 해 주셨습니다(눅 22:51). “이것까지 참으라”는 말씀은 “끝까지 참으라”는 말씀입니다.

예수님이 끝까지 참으신 이유는 우리를 구원하시기 위해서입니다. 예수님이 십자가에 못 박히셨을 때 사람들은 예수님께 십자가에서 내려오라고 조롱했습니다(막 15:30, 32). 예수님은 얼마든지 십자가에서 내려오실 수 있는 전능하신 하나님의 아들이십니다. 하지만 내려오지 않으시고 끝까지 참으셨습니다. 만약 예수님이 십자가에서 끝까지 참지 않으시고 내려오셨다면 인류 구원은 없습니다. 십자가에서 끝까지 참으신 까닭에 예수님의 피가 쏟아졌습니다. 그 피가 우리를 구속하고, 우리 죄를 정결케 했습니다. 그 피를 통해 우리가 하나님의 은혜의 보좌에 나아갈 수 있게 되었습니다(히 4:16, 10:19-20).

셋째, 예수님의 사랑은 하나님 아버지께 “끝까지” 순종하는 사랑입니다. 예수님의 사랑은 하나님 아버지에 대한 사랑에서 나왔습니다. 예수님의 사랑은 순종하는 사랑입니다. 사랑하면 순종하게 됩니다. 억지로 순종하는 것이 아니라 자원해서 순종하게 됩니다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 이루기 위해 죽기까지 순종하셨습니다. “자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으심이라”(빌 2:8하). 예수님이 죽기까지 복종하셨다는 말씀은 예수님이 끝까지 순종하셨다는 뜻입니다. 한 번 두 번 순종하는 것은 누구에게나 가능합니다. 하지만 끝까지 순종하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께 십자가에서 죽기까지, 곧 끝까지 순종하셨습니다.

넷째, 예수님의 “끝까지”의 사랑은 부활의 소망을 바라보는 사랑이었습니다. 예수님이 십자가에서 자신을 거역하는 사람들을 참으실 때 이를 악물고 참으신 것이 아닙니다. 예수님은 앞에 있는 즐거움을 바라보며 참으셨습니다. 소망 중에 참으셨습니다. 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위해 참으셨습니다. “믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자 그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사 부끄러움을 개의치 아니하시더니 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으셨느니라”(히 12:2). 예수님의 부활의 기쁨은 예수님 자신만을 위한 것이 아니었습니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리 모두에게 부활의 선물을 나누어 주시는 기쁨이었습니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람은 부활의 첫 열매되시는 예수님을 따라 부활하게 됩니다(고전 15:20). 그런 까닭에 고난 주간은 예수님의 고난에 감사하는 주간이 되어야 합니다. 또한 예수님처럼 앞에 있는 부활의 즐거움을 바라보는 기쁨의 주간, 소망의 주간이 되어야 합니다. 다른 것은 잊어도 됩니다. 하지만 예수님이 우리를 끝까지 사랑하신다는 사실만은 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 끝까지 사랑하시는 예수님의 사랑 속에 사시길 빕니다.

Jesus' Love of “Till the End”

As we are going into Passion Week, I meditated on the love of Jesus. While meditating on the love of Jesus, I realized the truth of how Jesus’ love is “till the end”.

First, Jesus loved his people "till the end." “It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end” (John 13:1). Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father, and he loved his people to the end. The people Jesus called his own were his disciples. Jesus loved his disciples whom he had raised up for three years and whom he washed their feet.

In the love that Jesus showed as he washed their feet included the forgiveness of their sins. When Jesus bore the cross, the disciples sold, denied, and abandoned their teacher, Jesus. Jesus washed their feet to forgive them in advance. Washing means forgiveness. Washing is a cleansing. When a vessel gets dirty, it cannot clean itself. Someone has to wash the vessel. When we, like vessels, get dirty, we cannot wash off the dirt by ourselves. We need someone who will cleanse us from the filth. That person is Jesus. Rather than the disciples kneeling before Jesus to ask for forgiveness, Jesus knelt down and forgave the sins of his disciples. It's an amazing love.

Second, the love of Jesus is a love that endures “till the end”. When Jesus carried the cross, he endured till the end. Jesus' love is a love that endures to the end. Love is patient, and it endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7). If you love, you will be patient. In a strict sense, we are patient as long as we love and endure as much as we love. When a mother conceives her child, she is patient and endures to the end. It is because of love. There were several difficult moments while Jesus carried the cross. But Jesus endured till the end. Among those who came to capture Jesus, there was a servant of the high priest. One of his disciples cut off the servant's right ear with his knife. At that time, Jesus told him to be patient with this, and he touched the servant’s ear to heal his ear (Luke 22:51). “Be patient with this” means “to be patient to the end”.

The reason Jesus endured till the end was to save us. When Jesus was crucified, people mocked him to come down from the cross (Mark 15:30, 32). Jesus is the Son of Almighty God who could have come down from the cross, anytime. But he didn't come down and endured till the end. If Jesus came down from the cross without enduring to the end, there would be no salvation for mankind. Jesus' blood poured out because he endured till the end, on the cross. His blood saved us and made our sins clean. Through his blood, we could go before the throne of God's grace (Hebrews 4:16, 10:19-20).

Third, the love of Jesus is the love of obeying the Heavenly Father “till the end”. Jesus' love came from his love for his Heavenly Father. Jesus' love is an obedient love. If you love, you will obey. Instead of being compelled to obey, you voluntarily obey. Jesus obeyed even to death to fulfill the will of his Heavenly Father. It says, “… he humbled himself and became obedient to death--even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:8b). When it says that Jesus obeyed to death, it means that Jesus obeyed to the end. Obeying once or twice is possible for anyone. But obeying to the end is not easy. Jesus obeyed his Heavenly Father till death on a cross, which is till the end.

Fourth, the love of Jesus “till the end” was the love that looked upon the hope of resurrection. When Jesus endured through those who mocked him on the cross, he did not endure with his teeth clenched. Jesus patiently looked upon the joy ahead. He was patient, in hope. He was patient for the joy ahead. “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:3). The joy of Jesus' resurrection was not just for Jesus himself. It was the joy of giving the gift of resurrection to all of us who believe in Jesus. Those who believe in Jesus will be resurrected in Jesus, who is the first fruit of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20). Therefore, Passion Week should be a week of thanksgiving for the suffering of Jesus Christ. Also, like Jesus, it should be a week of joy and a week of hope to look upon what’s ahead, the joy of resurrection. We can forget anything else. But we must not forget that Jesus loves us till the very end. May you live in the love of Jesus, who loves you till the very end.
