[목회서신] 온유한 사람이 누리는 복 | The Blessing Which the Meek Enjoys

저는 고요함을 좋아하고 온유함을 갈망합니다. 제가 온유함을 갈망하는 까닭은 온유함이 예수님의 마음이기 때문입니다. 예수님은 “나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니”(마 11:29상)라고 말씀하십니다. 예수님은 “온유한 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 땅을 기업으로 받을 것임이요”(마 5:5)라고 말씀하십니다. 온유한 사람은 땅을 기업으로 받게 됩니다. 땅을 기업으로 받는다는 것은 땅을 다스리는 것을 의미합니다. 곧 온유한 사람은 다스리는 복을 누리게 됩니다. 성경에서 다스림은 세도를 부림이 아닙니다. 섬세한 돌봄을 의미합니다. 온유한 사람은 잘 돌볼 줄 압니다. 온유한 사람은 사람도, 동물도, 생물도 잘 돌볼 줄 압니다.

하나님은 온유를 좋아하시고 폭력을 싫어하십니다. 하나님은 폭력적인 사람에게 귀한 것을 맡기지 않으십니다. 그 이유는 폭력은 파괴적이기 때문입니다. 세우기보다 무너뜨리는 경향이 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 온유한 사람에게 소중한 것을 맡기십니다. 온유는 비폭력입니다. 온유는 세우고 일으키는 힘이 있습니다. 폭력은 강해보이지만 사람의 마음을 얻지 못합니다. 우리는 강함을 원하지만 강함은 오래가지 못합니다. 반면에 따뜻하고 부드러운 것은 오래갑니다. 하나님의 마음과 사람의 마음을 얻는 길은 온유에 있습니다.

제가 온유를 동경(憧憬)하는 까닭은 제 안에 거침이 있음을 알기 때문입니다. 제 안에 폭력이 있음을 알기 때문입니다. 제 안에 짜증을 내고 싶고, 화를 내고 싶은 마음이 있음을 알기 때문입니다. 온유는 자신을 다스리는 것입니다. 자신의 마음을 다스리는 것입니다. 자신의 감정을 인식하고 다스리는 것입니다. 온유는 자신 안에 있는 분노하는 마음, 거친 마음을 다스리는 것입니다. 정말 강한 자는 자기를 이길 줄 아는 사람입니다. 자기를 정복할 줄 아는 사람입니다. 자기를 다스릴 줄 아는 사람입니다. 거칠고 강한 자의 결말이 좋지 못한 이유는 자신의 강함을 이기지 못하고 괴물이 되어 버린 까닭입니다. 온유한 자의 결말이 좋은 이유는 자신의 강함을 잘 다스려 천사 같은 인물로 변화된 까닭입니다.

온유란 말의 어원은 “길들인 야생마”에서 나왔습니다. 야생마는 거칩니다. 거칠다는 것은 에너지가 차고 넘친다는 것을 의미합니다. 에너지는 좋은 것입니다. 하지만 통제되지 않은 에너지는 위험합니다. 거친 야생마는 위험합니다. 하지만 거친 야생마를 길들이면 온유해집니다. 온유함을 통해 거친 야생마는 준마(駿馬)가 됩니다. 준마는 뛰어난 말을 의미합니다. 준마는 전쟁에서 승리를 선물해 줍니다. 준마는 주인과 한 몸이 되어, 주인을 보호해 줍니다. 온유한 성품은 거친 야생마와 같은 우리 마음을 준마로 만드는 것입니다. 온유란 거대한 에너지를 통제해서 선한 일에 사용하는 것입니다. 분노는 거대한 에너지입니다. 분노가 모두 나쁜 것이 아닙니다. 의분은 좋은 것입니다. 의분을 통해 잘못된 것을 바로 잡을 수 있습니다. 의분을 통해 정의를 실현할 수 있습니다. 온유란 좋은 의분을 다스려 좋은 결과를 만들어 내는 성품입니다.

온유한 성품은 극단을 피하는 성품입니다. 좌우로 치우치지 않는 성품입니다. 하나님은 여호수아에게 “우로나 좌로나 치우치지 말라 그리하면 어디로 가든지 형통하리니”(수 1:7하)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 온유한 성품은 지나치지 않는 성품입니다. 온유한 성품은 중용(中庸)과 중도(中道)를 좋아하는 성품입니다. 정로(正路)를 걷는 성품입니다. 지혜는 정로를 걷는 데 있습니다. “내 아들아 너는 듣고 지혜를 얻어 네 마음을 정로로 인도할지니라”(잠 23:19).

온유한 성품은 자족할 줄 아는 성품입니다. 행복은 자족하는 마음에 있습니다. 바울은 자족할 줄 알았기에 행복한 사도였습니다. 바울은 “내가 궁핍하므로 말하는 것이 아니니라 어떠한 형편에든지 나는 자족하기를 배웠노니”(빌 4:11)라고 말합니다. 불행은 자족하지 못하고 탐욕을 부리는데서 시작됩니다. 주어진 것에 자족하지 못하고 불만을 품는 것이 탐욕입니다. 탐욕의 비극은 눈이 어두워 자신이 소유한 것을 보지 못하는 데 있습니다. 또한 남이 소유한 것을 억지로 빼앗아 자기 것으로 만들려는 데 있습니다.

온유한 성품은 성령님의 열매입니다(갈 5:22-23). 또한 온유한 성품은 성령 충만한 가운데 영적 훈련을 통해 형성됩니다. 성품은 습관과 관련되어 있습니다. 탁월한 성품과 습관은 지속하고 반복하는 훈련을 통해 형성됩니다. 모든 탁월함은 지속과 반복을 통해 주어집니다. 탁월함은 의도적이어야 합니다. 또한 탁월함은 지속적인 노력과 헌신의 열매입니다. 온유는 탁월한 성품입니다. 탁월한 성품을 형성하기 위해서는 날마다 온유하기를 힘써야 합니다. 온유한 성품을 형성하기 위해서 온유한 성품이 주는 유익을 늘 기억하십시오. 온유는 좋은 관계를 맺는 성품입니다. 아름다운 성취를 위해 꼭 필요한 성품입니다. 온유는 행복의 비결입니다. 온유한 성품을 개발함으로 하나님이 예비하신 풍성한 복을 누리시길 기도드립니다.

The Blessing Which the Meek Enjoys

I love silence and long for meekness. The reason I long for meekness is that meekness is the heart of Jesus. Jesus says, “I am meek and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29a). Jesus says, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). The meek will inherit the earth. To inherit the earth means to rule the earth. Soon, the meek will enjoy the blessing of ruling. Ruling in the Bible is not exerting power with authority. It means delicate care. A meek person knows how to take good care of things. A meek person knows how to take good care of people, animals, and living beings.

God loves meekness and hates violence. God does not entrust anything valuable to violent people. Because violence is destructive. Because it tends to break down rather than build up. God entrusts precious things to the meek. Meekness is non-violence. Meekness has the power to build up and raise up. Violence seems strong, but it doesn't win people's hearts. We want strength, but strength does not last long. On the other hand, warm and soft ones last longer. The way to win the heart of God and the heart of men lies in meekness.

The reason I long for meekness is because I know that there is harshness within me. Because I know there is violence within me. Because I know that I have a desire to be annoyed and a desire to be angry. Meekness is self-control. It's about taking control of your own mind. It's about recognizing and managing your emotions. Meekness is to control the wrathful and rough heart within yourself. A really strong person is someone who knows how to defeat himself. He is a man who knows how to conquer himself. He is a man who knows how to take care of himself. The reason that the tough and strong man's ending is not good is because he cannot overcome his own strength and ends up becoming a monster. The reason the meek has a good ending is because he controls his strength so well that changes into an angelic character.

The etymology of the word “meek” comes from, “tamed wild horses.” Wild horses are rough. Rough means full of energy. Energy is a good thing. But uncontrolled energy is dangerous. Wild horses are dangerous. However, taming wild horses makes them meek. Through meekness, a wild horse becomes a courser. A courser means an excellent horse. A courser gives you victory in war. A courser becomes one with his master and protects the master. A meek character is what transforms our hearts from a wild horse into a courser. Meekness is to control great energy and use it for good. Anger is a huge energy. Not all anger is bad. Righteous anger is a good thing. Righteous anger allows you to correct the wrong things. Justice can be achieved through righteous anger. Meekness is a character that produces good results by controlling righteous anger.

A meek character is a character that avoids extremes. It is a character that does not turn aside to the right or to the left. God said to Joshua, “Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go” (Joshua 1:7). A meek character does not go too far. A meek character loves the means and the process. It is a character who walks on the right path. Wisdom lies in walking the right path. ““Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.” (Proverbs 23:19)

A meek character is a character that knows how to be content. Happiness lies in being content. Paul was a happy apostle because he knew how to be content. Paul says, “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Philippians 4:11). Unhappiness begins with greed and lack of contentment. Greed is not being content and being dissatisfied with what has been given. The tragedy of greed lies in the blindness of your eyes not to see what you have. Also, they are trying to forcefully take what others have and make it their own.

A meek character is the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Also, a meek character is formed through spiritual discipline in the filling of the Holy Spirit. Character is related to habit. Excellent character and habits are formed through consistent and repeated training. All excellence comes through persistence and repetition. Excellence must be intentional. Excellence is also the fruit of continuous hard work and dedication. Meekness is an excellent characteristic. In order to develop an excellent character, we must strive to be meek every day. To develop a meek character, always remember the benefits of being meek. Meekness is a character that builds good relationships. It is an essential attribute for beautiful achievement. Meekness is the secret to happiness. I pray that you will enjoy the abundant blessings God has prepared for you by developing a meek character.
