Do Not Conclude Your Life from a Single Scene

Do Not Conclude Your Life from a Single Scene
Charlie Chaplin once said, “Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.” Up close, all we may see are tears. A single painful word can fill our entire heart. One closed door can feel like the end of our life. But when we step back and look from a distance, we begin to see the road that stretches before and beyond that moment. We discover the meaning of encounters we could not understand at the time. We begin to notice traces of grace that were invisible through our tears. Faith opens our eyes to see life from a greater distance. It enables us to face today’s pain honestly while waiting for the next chapter God will write. We are living in one scene right now, but God sees the whole of our lives.
When Joseph was sold by his brothers, his life looked like a tragedy. He came out of the pit, but he could not return home. He was taken away from his beloved father and carried off to a foreign land. Even in Egypt, he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. If his story had ended there, what a sorrowful life it would have been. But God was with Joseph even in prison. Years later, Joseph became the one who cared for the very brothers who had wanted to kill him. During the famine, he saved the lives of many people (Genesis 50:20). What his brothers did was truly evil, but God did not allow their evil to write the final chapter of Joseph’s story.
Naomi also experienced profound loss. After leaving Bethlehem for Moab, she lost her husband and then both of her sons. When she returned home, she said that she had come back empty (Ruth 1:21). Yet Ruth was beside her. Through Ruth’s love and Boaz’s care, God brought a remarkable restoration to Naomi’s life. In the final chapter of Ruth, we see Naomi holding the baby Obed in her arms (Ruth 4:14–17). From that child came the family line that would lead to David.
Daniel was taken captive when he was young. He had to leave the land he knew and learn the language and culture of a foreign empire. Day after day, he lived in circumstances he had not chosen for himself. Yet God sustained him even in the land of exile. Kings changed and empires were shaken, but Daniel continued to pray. At the end of the book of Daniel, he is given the promise that he will rest and then, at the end of the days, rise to receive his allotted inheritance (Daniel 12:13).
When Jesus was crucified, everything was over in the eyes of His disciples. His body was laid in a tomb, and a stone sealed its entrance. But beyond that tomb, God was preparing the morning of resurrection. Jesus conquered death and rose again, and He ascended into heaven. The risen Lord, still bearing the wounds of the cross, lives in glory. Again and again, Scripture tells stories that pass through tears and wounds and lead to life and joy.
Therefore, learn to look at your life from a greater distance. Do not conclude your entire life from a single scene today. Do not conclude that something is meaningless simply because you cannot understand it now. On painful days, tell God that you are hurting. When tears come, lament and weep. Yet even then, entrust the next chapter—the one that has not yet been written—into God’s hands.
Paul writes, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). This promise does not call suffering itself good. Rather, it teaches us that even our suffering and failures remain within God’s good hands. The verses that follow show that this good is connected to God’s work of conforming us to the likeness of His Son (Romans 8:29). God cares for our circumstances, and as we pass through trials, He continues to shape us into greater maturity.
Life is like a picture woven with threads of many colors. From the back, the threads appear tangled. Knots protrude, and strands of different colors cross one another in seeming disorder. But from the front, those same threads form a beautiful pattern. Sometimes we see God’s workmanship only from the back. We do not understand why a dark thread is necessary or why a knot had to appear in that particular place. Faith is entrusting today’s single thread to the God who sees the side we cannot see. Even pieces of broken glass can become a mosaic in the hands of a skilled artist. By themselves, they are sharp fragments, but when joined with other pieces, they catch the light and form a beautiful picture. Place the pieces that remain in your hands before God. Entrust to Him the opportunities you have lost, the questions that remain unanswered, and the tears you cannot bring yourself to speak about.
Life is a mystery. We will not come to understand every reason while we are alive. Yet through the cross and the resurrection, we know the heart of God. We know the love of the One who gave His Son for us. Walk through today trusting in that love. Do not judge too soon. Do not rush to a conclusion. God is still at work. Even at this very moment, while our tears are falling, the hand of God that works all things together for good has not stopped.
