[목회서신] 작고 조용한 순종이 큰 변화를 만듭니다. | Small and Quiet Obedience Brings Great Change.

     하나님이 새해를 선물로 주셨습니다. 새해를 어떻게 시작하면 좋을까요? 새해가 되면 우리는 한 해의 목표를 세우고 큰 기대를 품습니다. 그렇다면 우리가 기대한 목표를 어떻게 이룰 수 있을까요? 제가 배우고 경험한 지혜를 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 작은 순종이 큰 변화를 낳습니다. 저는 작은 것을 소중히 여깁니다. 작은 것은 기본이며, 본질입니다. 모든 위대하고 거대한 일은 작은 것에서 시작되었습니다. 작은 것의 가치를 안다면 정말 소중한 지혜를 소유한 것입니다. 우리는 종종 극적인 변화를 순식간에 경험하길 원합니다. 거대한 도약을 꿈꾸며 살아갑니다. 저 역시 같은 마음입니다. 하지만 극적인 변화와 거대한 도약은 작은 노력과 작은 순종이 차곡차곡 쌓일 때 이루어집니다.

우리가 너무 쉽게 좌절하고 포기하는 이유는 조급함 때문입니다. 서두르기 때문입니다. 제가 좋아하는 단어는 “마침내”입니다. 아브라함이 갈대아 우르를 떠난 것도 작은 순종에서 시작되었습니다. 가나안으로 향한 첫 발걸음이었습니다. “믿음으로 아브라함은 부르심을 받았을 때에 순종하여 장래의 유업으로 받을 땅에 나아갈새 갈 바를 알지 못하고 나아갔으며”(히 11:8).

속도보다 중요한 것은 방향입니다. 하나님은 속도보다 방향을 더 소중히 여기십니다. 큰 걸음보다 중요한 것은 작은 발걸음입니다. 하나님은 거대한 순종보다 작은 순종이 지속되는 것을 기뻐하십니다. 아브라함은 결국 마침내 가나안에 도착했습니다. “아브람이 그의 아내 사래와 조카 롯과 하란에서 모은 모든 소유와 얻은 사람들을 이끌고 가나안 땅으로 가려고 떠나서 마침내 가나안 땅에 들어갔더라”(창 12:5). 아브라함이 갈대아 우르를 떠난 것은 작은 순종이었습니다. 작은 발걸음이었습니다. 그 작은 발걸음이 반복되고 지속되어 마침내 가나안 땅에 들어가게 되었습니다.

하나님은 작은 일을 멸시하는 자를 기뻐하지 않으십니다. “작은 일의 날이라고 멸시하는 자가 누구냐”(슥 4:10상). 또한 적은 일에 충성된 자를 칭찬하십니다. “그 주인이 이르되 잘하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아 네가 적은 일에 충성하였으매 내가 많은 것을 네게 맡기리니”(마 25:21). 작은 것 속에 담긴 무한한 잠재력을 볼 줄 아는 것이 지혜입니다. 작은 씨앗 속에 담긴 거대한 나무와 숲을 볼 줄 아는 것이 지혜입니다. 세상의 모든 것은 작게 시작되었습니다.

작은 순종은 기본에 충실한 삶을 의미합니다. 기본기를 잘 다진 사람에게는 밝은 미래가 기다립니다. 탁월한 인물들은 한결같이 기본에 충실했습니다. 날마다 기본으로 돌아갔습니다. 날마다 본질을 붙들고, 원천 되시는 하나님께 돌아갑니다. 하루아침에 큰일을 이루지 못해도 작은 일은 오늘 시작할 수 있습니다. 인생을 바꾸는 것은 거대한 도약이 아니라 방향을 바꾸는 작은 걸음입니다. 하루하루 쌓인 작은 순종이 아름다운 성품을 빚고, 건강하고 성숙한 공동체를 세웁니다. 가장 놀라운 힘은 작은 반복의 힘입니다. 한 번 더 성경을 읽고 기도하십시오. 한 번 더 찬양을 드리십시오. 한 번 더 용서하십시오. 한 번 더 감사 일기를 쓰십시오. 한 번 더 만나는 사람을 축복해 주십시오.

둘째, 조용한 순종이 큰 변화를 만듭니다. 아브라함의 순종은 조용했습니다. 하나님은 작고 조용하게 일하십니다. 조용함은 고요함을 낳고, 고요함은 깊이를 만듭니다. 조용한 순종은 은밀한 순종을 의미합니다. 생명은 늘 은밀하고 조용하게 자랍니다. 씨앗은 어둠 속에 뿌리를 내립니다. 시간이 지나면 조용히 싹이 트고 자랍니다. 이사야는 이렇게 말합니다. “땅이 싹을 내며 동산이 거기 뿌린 것을 움돋게 함 같이 ... 솟아나게 하시리라”(사 61:11). “움돋다”는 순수한 우리말로, 새순이나 싹이 힘차게 밀고 올라오는 모습을 뜻합니다. 새로운 시작과 생명의 회복을 묘사하는 말입니다. 싹이 트는 것은 조용하지만 결코 약하지 않습니다. 식물의 생명력은 우리 상상을 초월합니다. 생명은 약동하는 힘입니다. 생명은 성장합니다. 생명은 솟구쳐 오릅니다. 생명은 뻗어나갑니다.

하나님은 요란한 순종보다 조용한 순종을 통해 더 깊이 일하십니다. 조용한 순종은 사람들의 시선을 의식하지 않는 순종입니다. 박수와 인정을 기대하지 않는 순종입니다. 우리는 연약한 인간이기에 사람들의 시선을 의식하게 됩니다. 사람들의 칭찬과 인정을 기대할 수밖에 없습니다. 하지만 신앙이 성숙할수록 우리는 사람의 시선보다 하나님의 눈길을 더 의식하게 됩니다. 유일한 청중이신 하나님 앞에서 순종하며, 하나님의 조용한 칭찬에 만족하게 됩니다. 그래서 조용한 순종은 성숙한 순종입니다.

작고 조용한 순종이 오래갑니다. 요란한 순종은 빠르지만 쉽게 지칩니다. 가장 중요한 것은 지속함입니다. 꾸준함입니다. 조용한 순종은 하나님의 은혜를 의지할 때 가능합니다. 하나님의 은혜를 의지할 때 감정과 의지를 넘어 끝까지 순종할 수 있습니다. 조용한 순종은 다른 사람과 비교하지 않습니다. 자기에게 주어진 사명을 따라 묵묵히 그 사명을 성취합니다. 예수님의 순종도 요란하지 않으셨습니다. 군중의 비난과 제자들의 배신 가운데서도 조용히 순종의 길을 걸으셨습니다. 새해에는 작고 조용한 순종의 길을 걸으십시오. 즉각적인 보상과 거대한 도약을 내려놓으십시오. 하루하루 주님이 맡기신 일을 묵묵히 감당하십시오. 때가 되면 놀라운 하나님의 역사를 보게 될 것입니다. 새해 복 많이 받으십시오. 그리고 많은 복을 이웃과 함께 나누십시오.

Small and Quiet Obedience Brings Great Change.

   God has given us the new year as a gift. How should we begin this new year well? When a new year begins, we set goals for the year and hold great expectations in our hearts. Then how can we accomplish the goals we are hoping for? I would like to share the wisdom I have learned and experienced.

First, small obedience brings great change. I value small things. Small things are the foundation and the essence. Every great and monumental work began with something small. When you know the value of small things, you possess a truly precious wisdom. We often want dramatic change to take place instantly. We live dreaming of great leaps forward. I am the same way. However, dramatic change and great leaps are made possible when small efforts and small acts of obedience are steadily stacked up, one by one.

The reason we become easily discouraged and give up is because of impatience—because we rush. One of my favorite words is “finally.” Abraham’s departure from Ur of the Chaldeans began with a small obedience. It was his first step toward Canaan. “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8).

Direction is more important than speed. God values direction more than speed. A small step is more important than a large stride. God delights more in small obedience that continues than in large obedience that happens only once. Abraham finally arrived in Canaan. “He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there” (Genesis 12:5). Abraham’s departure from Ur was a small obedience. It was a small step. That small step was repeated and continued until, finally, he entered the land of Canaan.

God does not delight in those who despise small things. “Who despises the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10a). He also praises those who are faithful in little. “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things’” (Matthew 25:21). Wisdom is being able to see the limitless potential contained within small things. Wisdom is seeing the great tree and the forest contained within a tiny seed. Everything in this world began small.

Small obedience means living a life faithful to the basics. A bright future awaits the person who has built a strong foundation. People of excellence were consistently faithful to the basics. Each day, they returned to the fundamentals. Each day, they held on to the essence and returned to God, the Source. We may not be able to accomplish great things overnight, but we can begin small things today. What changes a life is not a giant leap, but a small step that changes direction. Small obedience, accumulated day by day, shapes beautiful character and builds a healthy and mature community. The most amazing strength is the strength of small repetition. Read the Bible and pray once more. Offer praise once more. Forgive once more. Write in your gratitude journal once more. Bless the person you meet once more.

Second, quiet obedience brings great change. Abraham’s obedience was quiet. God works in small and quiet ways. Quietness gives birth to stillness, and stillness creates depth. Quiet obedience means hidden obedience. Life always grows quietly and secretly. A seed lays down roots in the darkness. After time passes, it quietly sprouts and grows. Isaiah says, “As the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations” (Isaiah 61:11). The Korean word umdodda (come up) describes the powerful upward push of new shoots breaking through the soil. It speaks of new beginnings and the restoration of life. The sprouting is quiet, but it is never weak. The life force of a plant surpasses our imagination. Life pulses with power. Life grows. Life rises. Life spreads.

God often works more deeply through quiet obedience than through loud obedience. Quiet obedience does not seek the attention of people. It does not expect applause or recognition. Because we are weak human beings, we naturally become conscious of people’s eyes. We cannot help but desire people’s praise and recognition. But as our faith matures, we become more aware of God’s gaze than people’s gaze. We obey before the only Audience—God—and we become satisfied with God’s quiet approval. This is why quiet obedience is mature obedience.

Small and quiet obedience lasts long. Loud obedience is fast, but it quickly becomes exhausted. The most important thing is continuation—consistency. Quiet obedience is only possible when we rely on God’s grace. When we rely on His grace, we can obey beyond our emotions and will—until the end. Quiet obedience does not compare itself to others. It simply fulfills the mission given by God, silently and faithfully. Even Jesus’ obedience was not loud. In the criticism of the crowds and the betrayal of His disciples, He quietly walked the path of obedience. In this new year, walk the path of small and quiet obedience. Let go of the need for instant rewards and great leaps. Faithfully carry out the tasks the Lord entrusts to you each day. In due time, you will witness God’s amazing work. Happy New Year.
