[목회서신] 잠재력을 발견하고 개발하는 지혜 | Wisdom of Finding and Developing Potential

하나님은 우리 안에 엄청난 잠재력을 불어 넣어 주셨습니다. 잠재력이란 소유하고 있지만 아직 드러나지 않은 능력을 의미합니다. 소유하고 있지만 인식하지 못하고 있는 재능과 은사를 의미합니다. 잠재력이란 무한한 가능성이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 잠재력을 인식하고, 그 잠재력을 개발하길 원하십니다. 중요한 것은 자신 안에 있는 잠재력을 인식하는 것입니다. 가장 안타까운 일은 자신 안에 감추인 보배를 인식하지 못하는 것입니다. 바울은 고린도교회 성도들이 소유한 보배를 일깨워주기 원했습니다. “우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라”(고후 4:7).

잠재력을 개발하기 위해서는 먼저 자신 안에 있는 잠재력을 인식하는 것입니다. 예수님을 영접한 사람들이 소유한 가장 큰 잠재력은 하나님이십니다. 하나님이 우리 안에 거하시고, 하나님이 우리와 함께하실 때 우리는 최상의 잠재력을 소유한 사람들이 됩니다. 하나님은 전능하십니다. 전지하십니다. 하나님은 무에서 유를 창조하시는 분입니다. 하나님은 상처를 영광으로, 저주를 축복으로, 사망을 영생으로 바꿀 수 있는 분입니다. 하나님이 역사하시면 모든 것이 역전될 수 있습니다.

저는 하나님을 만나면서 제가 죄인이라는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 제가 얼마나 악한 존재인가를 깨달았습니다. 동시에 저는 하나님을 만나면서 제 안에 무한한 잠재력이 숨어 있다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 예수님을 믿고 영접하는 순간, 저는 칭의의 축복을 받았습니다. 저는 죄인이지만 예수님이 저의 죄를 담당하시고, 예수님의 의를 전수해 주심으로 저는 믿음으로 의롭다하심을 받게 되었습니다. 예수님을 영접하는 순간, 성령님이 제 안에 들어오심으로 저는 놀라운 능력을 경험하게 되었습니다. 성령님은 십자가에 죽으신 예수님을 다시 부활시키신 능력의 하나님이십니다. 성령님은 지혜와 총명의 영이십니다. 모략과 재능의 영이십니다. 지식과 여호와를 경외하는 영이십니다(사 11:2). 우리가 할 일은 우리 안에 살아 역사하시는 성령님의 능력을 인식하는 것입니다.

우리가 소유한 것을 인식하지 못하면 그 가치를 알 수 없습니다. 우리가 소유한 것을 인식하지 못하면 소유한 것을 활용할 수 없습니다. 우리가 소유한 것을 인식하지 못하면 소유한 것을 나눌 수 없습니다. 최근, 《요셉의 원리들(The Joseph Principles by Steven K. Scott)》이라는 책을 읽다가 자신이 소유한 것을 인식하는 것이 얼마나 중요한가를 새롭게 배웠습니다.

어떤 90세가 되신 노부인께서 프랑스에 있는 작은 집을 팔고 작은 아파트로 이사하기를 원해 소유한 물건을 매각하게 되었습니다. 그 일을 도와주시는 분이 집 안에 있는 가구들을 경매에 내놓았습니다. 그렇게 매각한 돈이 6천불 정도 되었습니다. 사람들이 사가지 않은 물건은 모두 내다 버릴 생각이었습니다. 그런데 집 안 정리를 도와주는 분이 부엌 위쪽에 걸려 있는 아주 오래된 그림을 자세히 살펴보았습니다. 그 그림은 아주 오랫동안 여주인의 관심에도 없었던 그림이었습니다. 그림을 살펴보신 분이 그림이 조금 특별하다면서 전문가에게 그 가치를 알아보자고 제안했습니다. 그림을 평가하는 전문가는 그 그림이 4백만 달러에서 7백만 달러 정도의 가치가 있다고 알려 주었습니다. 결국 그 그림은 경매를 통해 2천 7백만 달러에 팔렸습니다. 안타깝게도 91세가 된 노부인은 그림이 팔린 지 몇 개월 후에 생애를 마감했습니다.

만약 이 노부인이 자신이 소유한 이 그림의 가치를 알았더라면 가난하게 살지 않아도 되었습니다. 그뿐만 아니라 많은 사람을 도우면서 살 수도 있었습니다. 그런데 자신이 소유한 가치를 인식하지 못함으로 가난하게 살다가 생을 마감한 것입니다. 우리가 소유한 잠재력을 어떻게 알아볼 수 있을까요?

첫째, 하나님을 만날 때 자신이 소유한 잠재력을 깨달을 수 있습니다. 둘째, 좋은 만남을 통해 자신이 소유한 잠재력을 깨달을 수 있습니다. 좋은 만남이란 우리 안에 있는 잠재력을 보고 그 잠재력을 말해주는 만남입니다. 셋째, 좋은 책을 읽는 중에 자신 안에 있는 잠재력을 인식할 수 있습니다. 넷째, 여러 가지 일을 시도해 보는 가운데 자신 안에 있는 잠재력을 인식할 수 있습니다. 다섯째, 고난을 통해 자신의 잠재력을 인식할 수 있습니다. 신비롭게도 우리는 실패와 역경과 시련을 통과하는 중에 이전에 전혀 인식하지 못했던 잠재력을 발견하게 됩니다.

자신 안의 잠재력을 인식하는 것만으로 충분하지 않습니다. 자신 안에 잠재력을 개발할 수 있어야 합니다. 아무리 좋은 재능을 가지고 있어도 그것을 개발하지 않으면 거의 쓸모가 없습니다. 잠재력을 잘 개발하기 위해서는 좋은 멘토를 만나야 합니다. 그런데 자신 안의 잠재력을 개발하는 것만으로 충분하지 않습니다. 자신의 잠재력을 개발했다면 자신의 잠재력을 발휘할 수 있는 기회가 주어져야 합니다. 기회는 좋은 성품과 좋은 관계를 가꾸는 것과 연결되어 있습니다. 또한 기도할 때 하나님이 좋은 기회를 주십니다. 부디 여러분 안에 숨겨진 잠재력을 인식하고 개발해서 하나님의 영광을 위해 사용하시길 빕니다.

Wisdom of Finding and Developing Potential

God has instilled tremendous potential in us. Potential refers to abilities that you possess but have not yet manifested. It refers to talents and gifts that you possess but are unaware of. Potential can be said to be infinite possibilities. God wants us to recognize our potential and develop it. The important thing is to recognize the potential within yourself. The saddest thing is not to recognize the treasure hidden within you. Paul wanted to remind the Corinthians of the treasures they possessed. “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Corinthians 4:7).

To develop your potential, you must first recognize the potential within yourself. The greatest potential possessed by those who accept Jesus is God. We possess the highest potential when God dwells in us and God is with us. God is all-mighty. He is omniscient. God is the one who creates things out of nothing. God is the one who can turn wounds into glory, curses into blessings, and death into eternal life. When God works, everything can be reversed.

As I encountered God, I realized that I am a sinner. I realized how evil I am. At the same time, as I encountered God, I realized that there is an infinite potential hidden within me. The moment I believed in and accepted Jesus, I received the blessing of justification. I am a sinner, but I was justified by faith because Jesus took on my sins and passed on His righteousness. The moment I accepted Jesus, the Holy Spirit came into me, and I experienced wonderful power. The Holy Spirit is the God of power who resurrected Jesus who died on the cross. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom and understanding. He is the spirit of counsel and power. He is the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2). Our job is to recognize the power of the Holy Spirit living and working in us.

We cannot know the value of what we possess unless we recognize it. We cannot use what we have if we do not recognize what we possess. We cannot share what we have unless we recognize what we possess. Recently, while reading “The Joseph Principles” by Steven K. Scott, I learned anew how important it is to be aware of what you own.

A ninety-year-old woman sold her tiny home in France so she could move into an assisted-living apartment. She asked an auction company to sell any furniture and other items in her house that might be of worth. The company sold her furniture and about a hundred other items for a total of $6,000. The items that weren’t sold were to be taken to a dump at the end of the week. But a housekeeper took a closer look at a very old painting hanging above the kitchen. The painting hadn't even interested the owner for a very long time. The person who looked at the painting suggested that the painting be a little special and find out its value to an expert. An expert appraising the painting told them it was worth between $4 and $7 million. Eventually, the painting sold for $27 million at auction. Sadly, the ninety-year-old old lady ended her life a few months after the painting was sold.

If this old lady had known the value of this painting she owned, she would not have lived in poverty. Not only that, she could have lived by helping many people. However, she did not recognize the value she possessed, so she lived in poverty and ended her life. How can we recognize the potential we possess?

First, we can realize our potential when we encounter God. Second, we can realize our potential through good encounters. A good encounter is where the person sees the potential within us and tells us about that potential. Third, while reading a good book, we can recognize the potential within ourselves. Fourth, while trying out various things, we can recognize the potential within ourselves. Fifth, we can recognize our potential through hardship. Mysteriously, as we pass through failures, adversities, and trials, we discover potentials we never recognized before.

Recognizing the potential within yourself is not enough. You must be able to develop the potential within yourself. No matter how good a talent you have, it is of little use if you don't develop it. In order to develop your potential well, you need to meet a good mentor. However, developing the potential within yourself is not enough. Once you have developed your potential, you should be given the opportunity to display your potential. Opportunities are linked to cultivating good character and good relationships. Also, when you pray, God gives you good opportunities. Please recognize and develop the hidden potential within you and use it for the glory of God.
