[목회서신] 지속적으로 성장하십시오! | Continue to Grow!

성장은 모든 사람이 추구하는 목표입니다. 부모는 자녀가 성장하길 원합니다. 키도 자라고, 지성도 자라고, 아름다운 성품도 자라기를 원합니다. 며칠 전 제 둘째 딸 에스더가 낳은 아들이 “엄마 예뻐!”라고 말했습니다. 이제 막 말을 배우기 시작한 아들입니다. 집에서 가르쳐 주지 않았습니다. 어린이집에서 배운 것 같습니다. 어린 아들의 “엄마 예뻐”라는 한마디에 둘째 딸이 기뻐했습니다. 그 이유는 아들이 성장하고 있음을 경험한 까닭입니다. “예뻐”가 “기뻐”를 낳았습니다.

사람의 모든 활동은 성장과 관련되어 있습니다. 성장에 대한 갈망은 우리 모두의 갈망입니다. 성장은 자라는 것입니다. 성장은 뻗어나가는 것을 의미합니다. 성장은 발전을 의미합니다. 성장은 질적으로, 양적으로 변화하는 것을 의미합니다. 성장은 점점 더 무르익는 것을 의미합니다. 모든 생명은 살아 있는 한 지속적으로 발전해야 합니다. 모든 생명은 성장이 멈추면 그때부터 퇴보하게 됩니다. 쇠퇴하게 됩니다. 어느 시점에서 소멸됩니다. 나이가 들었다고 성장을 멈추면 안 됩니다. 외적인 성장은 어느 정도에서 멈출 수 있습니다. 하지만 내면의 성장은 얼마든지 지속될 수 있습니다.

저는 제 자신의 성장이 곧 제가 섬기는 교회의 성장이라고 믿고 성장에 힘쓰고 있습니다. 그런 까닭에 저는 날마다 배웁니다. 성장은 영향력입니다. 성장하는 사람을 가까이하면 성장에 자극을 받습니다. 성장에 관한 글과 책을 읽으면 성장을 갈망하게 됩니다. 성장하는 사업가를 만나면 성장에 대한 도전을 받습니다. 성장하는 목회자를 만나면 성장의 불씨를 받게 됩니다.

모든 사람에게는 하나님이 심어주신 성장 본능이 있습니다. 중요한 것은 그 본능을 지속적으로 자극하는 것입니다. 성장은 선택이 아니라 필수입니다. 왜냐하면 성장하지 않으면 쇠퇴하기 때문입니다. 그렇다고 성장에 대해 지나친 압박감을 가질 필요는 없습니다. 성장은 노력만 가지고 되는 것이 아니라 하나님의 은혜가 함께해야 되기 때문입니다. 사도 베드로는 “오직 우리 주 곧 구주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 그를 아는 지식에서 자라 가라”(벧후 3:18상)고 말씀합니다. 제가 그동안 깨달은 성장의 원리를 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 성장의 중요성을 절실하게 깨달아야 합니다. 성장의 중요성과 가치를 깨달을 때 성장에 대한 갈망을 갖게 됩니다. 성장에 대한 갈망이 중요한 까닭은 성장은 의도적이기 때문입니다. 성장은 의도적으로 목표를 세우고, 그 목표에 집중할 때 그 열매를 맺습니다. 목표를 달성하기 위해 계획을 세우고 실행에 옮겨야 합니다. 가만히 있으면 아무 일도 나지 않습니다. 어떻게 씨앗을 심지 않고 풍성한 열매를 기대할 수 있겠습니까? 씨앗은 하나님이 주시지만 그 씨앗을 심는 것은 우리가 해야 합니다. 우리가 심은 씨앗이 자라도록 도와주시는 분은 하나님이십니다. 하지만 하나님이 우리 대신 씨앗을 심어주지 않으십니다.

둘째, 성장을 위한 선한 동기를 갖도록 하십시오. 누구를 위한 성장이며, 무엇을 위한 성장인가가 중요합니다. 남을 힘들게 하는 성장은 좋지 않습니다. 자신의 이익만을 추구하는 성장은 아름답지 않습니다. 남을 무너뜨리고 복수하기 위한 성장은 위험합니다. 성장의 동기가 순수할수록 좋습니다. 다른 사람들의 삶을 풍요롭게 만드는 성장이 좋습니다. 더 나은 세상을 만드는 성장이 좋습니다. 다른 사람의 성장을 돕기 위한 성장이 좋습니다. 예수님은 우리가 풍성한 생명을 누리기를 원하십니다(요 10:10). 하나님은 우리가 복의 통로가 되길 원하십니다. 다른 사람의 성장의 채널이 되길 원하십니다.

셋째, 지속적인 학습을 통해 성장하십시오. 우리는 주입식 교육에 익숙해 있습니다. 그래서 대학 졸업과 함께 책도 졸업하는 분이 많습니다. 주입식 교육에 익숙한 사람은 주도적으로 학습하는 것에 서투릅니다. 가장 소중한 것은 배우는 법을 배우는 것입니다. 주도적으로 학습하는 법을 터득하면 놀라운 성장을 지속할 수 있습니다. 가장 좋은 학습법은 성장에 도움이 되는 책을 읽는 것입니다. 책을 읽을 시간이 없다는 분이 있습니다. 물론 이해가 됩니다. 또는 책 읽는 것이 힘들다는 분도 있습니다. 세상에 쉬운 일은 없습니다. 쉬운 일은 내려가는 것뿐입니다. 성장이나 발전이 아닌 몰락하는 길은 어렵지 않습니다. 하지만 위로 올라가는 길, 앞으로 뻗어 나가는 길은 어렵습니다. 등산도 공부도 사업도 직장 생활도 인생도 목회도 마찬가지입니다.

넷째, 작은 변화를 소중히 여김으로 꾸준히 성장하십시오. 처음 독서에 도전하는 분들은 변화를 잘 느끼지 못합니다. 독서를 하지 않아도 세상을 살아가는 데 당장은 별 문제가 없어 보입니다. 그래서 책을 가까이하지 않습니다. 하지만 기간이 길어질수록 보이지 않는 차이가 발생합니다. 시간이 지나면 작은 차이가 점점 큰 차이를 만들어 냅니다. 독서와 함께 중요한 것이 있습니다. 배운 것을 실천하는 것입니다. 그것이 진정한 독서의 길이며, 학습의 길입니다. 우리 교회가 계획하고 있는 평생학습을 위한 도서관 건립을 위해 계속 기도해 주십시오. 성경과 좋은 책을 읽으십시오. 지속적으로 성장하는 길은 꾸준한 학습에 있음을 기억하십시오.

Continue to Grow!

Growth is a goal that everyone strives for. Parents want their children to grow not only in height and intellect but also in beautiful character. A few days ago, my second daughter Esther's son said, "Mom is pretty!" He is just beginning to learn to speak. It wasn't taught at home; it seems he learned it at daycare. My daughter was delighted by her son's words because she felt the experience of her son growing. "Pretty" (예뻐 yep-peo) gave birth to "joy" (기뻐 gip-peo).

All human activity is related to growth. The desire for growth is universal among us all. Growth means to grow, stretch out, develop, change both qualitatively and quantitatively, and ripen more and more. All living things must continue to develop as long as they are alive. When growth stops, the decline begins. At some point, there will be extinction. We should not stop growing just because we are aging. External growth can stop at a certain point, but internal growth can continue indefinitely.

I believe my own growth is the growth of the church I serve, and I strive for growth. For this reason, I learn every day. Growth is influence. Being close to a person who is growing stimulates growth. Reading about growth makes you yearn for it. Meeting a growing business person challenges you about growth. Meeting a growing pastor ignites the spark of growth.

Everyone has a growth instinct planted by God. The important thing is to stimulate that instinct continuously. Growth is not an option but a necessity because you will decline if you do not grow. However, you don't need to feel undue pressure about growth because it cannot happen through effort alone. It requires God's grace. The Apostle Peter says, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18a). I want to share the principles of growth that I have realized.

First, we must earnestly realize the importance of growth. When we understand the importance and value of growth, we develop a longing for it. The reason this longing is important is that growth is intentional. Growth happens when we set intentional goals, focus on those goals, and bear fruit. We must plan and act to achieve our goals. Nothing happens by standing still. How can we expect abundant fruit without planting seeds? God gives the seeds, but we must plant them. God helps our planted seeds to grow, but He does not plant them for us.

Second, have good motives for growth. It is important to know whom and what the growth is for. Growth that troubles others is not good. The growth that pursues only self-interest is not beautiful. Growth for the sake of bringing down others and for revenge is dangerous. The purer the motive for growth, the better. Growth that enriches the lives of others is good. The growth that creates a better world is good. Growth that helps others grow is good. Jesus wants us to enjoy abundant life (John 10:10). God wants us to be a channel of blessings, a channel for the growth of others.

Third, grow through continuous learning. We are accustomed to rote learning. Therefore, many people stop reading books after graduating from college. Those accustomed to rote learning are clumsy at learning proactively. The most valuable thing is learning how to learn. If you master proactive learning, you can continue remarkable growth. The best way to learn is to read books that help you grow. Some say they do not have time to read books. Of course, I understand. Or reading is challenging. There is no easy task in the world. The only easy thing is going downhill. The path to decline and downfall is not difficult. But the path going upward and forward is challenging. This applies to hiking, studying, business, work, life, and ministry.

Fourth, cherish small changes and grow steadily. Those new to reading do not feel the change immediately. It seems that there is no immediate problem living in the world without reading. Therefore, they do not engage with books. However, as time goes by, an invisible difference occurs. Over time, a small difference creates a big difference. Along with reading, it is important to practice what you learn. This is the true path of reading and learning. Please continue to pray for the construction of a library for lifelong learning that our church is planning. Read the Bible and good books. Remember that the path to continuous growth is in consistent learning.
