[목회서신] 집중된 관심이 우리 인생을 만듭니다. | Focused Attention Shapes Our Life

며칠 전에 선인장에 핀 꽃을 관심을 가지고 살펴본 적이 있습니다. 여러 종류의 선인장을 집에서 키우지만 이번에 핀 선인장 꽃은 제 생애 처음 본 것이었습니다. 놀랍고 신비로웠습니다. 제 시선이 한참을 머물렀습니다. 그리고 보고 또 보았습니다. 그날 밤 잠들기 전, 문득 저녁 무렵에 관심을 기울여 보았던 선인장 꽃이 떠올랐습니다. 제가 관심을 갖지 않았다면 결코 떠오르지 않았을 신비로운 선인장 꽃이 떠오른 것입니다. 관심의 힘이었습니다. 우리 인생을 만들어 가는 것은 관심입니다. 관심(關心)이란 어떤 것에 마음이 끌려 주의를 기울이는 것입니다. 관심(關心)이란 단어 속에는 마음 “심(心)”이 담겨 있습니다. 관심은 우리 마음과 깊은 관련이 있습니다.

모든 관심이 우리 인생을 만들어가는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 관심은 스쳐가는 관심이 있습니다. 어떤 관심은 우리 인생을 망가뜨리는 잘못된 관심이 있습니다. 그런 관심을 우리는 유혹이라고 부릅니다. 아담과 하와는 생명나무가 아닌 선악과에 관심을 가짐으로 에덴동산에서 추방되었습니다. 만약 아담과 하와가 생명나무에 관심을 가졌다면 인류 역사는 달라졌을 것입니다. 그런 까닭에 누구에게 관심을 기울이며, 무엇에 관심을 기울이며, 어디에 관심을 기울여야 할 것인가를 잘 분별해야 합니다. 성경에 나오는 12명의 정탐꾼 중에 10명의 정탐꾼은 가나안 땅을 싫어했습니다. 떠나온 애굽에 관심을 가졌습니다. 온 이스라엘 백성들의 눈길을 애굽으로 돌이키게 만들었습니다. 하지만 여호수아와 갈렙은 하나님이 약속한 가나안 땅에 관심을 가졌습니다. 가나안 땅에 초점을 맞추었습니다. 결국 출애굽 1세대 가운데 가나안 땅에 들어간 사람은 여호수아와 갈렙뿐이었습니다. 어떤 면에서 관심도 선택입니다. 그리고 선택은 결과를 낳습니다. 제가 묵상하며 깨달은 관심에 대한 통찰을 몇 가지 나누고 싶습니다.

관심은 사랑입니다. 관심을 갖는다는 것은 사랑을 시작하는 것입니다. 사랑의 반대는 미움이 아니라 무관심입니다. 미움은 아직 관심이 남아 있는 것입니다. 어떤 면에서 타락한 관심입니다. 비뚤어진 관심입니다. 하지만 무관심은 전혀 관심을 기울이지 않는 것입니다. 그런 까닭에 사랑해야 하는 사람들에게 미움보다 더 무서운 것은 무관심입니다. 관심을 갖고 사랑하는 것이 중요한 까닭은 인간은 사랑하는 것에 의해 변화되기 때문입니다. 사랑하는 것을 닮게 되기 때문입니다. 사랑하는 것에 우리 마음의 색깔이 결정되고, 우리 영혼이 물들여지기 때문입니다.

관심은 초점 맞추기입니다. 초점을 맞추면 놀라운 일들이 전개 됩니다. 어릴 적에 돋보기를 가지고 종이에 초점을 맞추어 본 적이 있습니다. 태양 빛을 받아 돋보기로 초점을 맞추면 종이에 불이 붙습니다. 관심이란 돋보기로 햇볕을 모으듯 집중하는 것입니다. 초점 맞추기는 집중적인 관심을 의미합니다. 지속적인 관심을 의미합니다. 우리 인생을 만드는 것은 스쳐가는 관심이 아닙니다. 한두 번 관심을 기울인다고 해서 우리 인생이 변화되지 않습니다. 집중적인 관심, 지속적인 관심, 그리고 끈질긴 관심이 우리 인생을 만듭니다. 우리가 어떤 주제에 관심을 갖고 초점을 맞추게 되면 그 주제를 깊이 연구하게 됩니다. 어떤 분은 한 주제에 초점을 맞추어 깊이 연구하는 중에 그 분야에 박사가 됩니다. 교수가 됩니다.

저는 목회자의 길을 걸으면서 영성(靈性)에 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 말씀 묵상으로 시작된 영성에 대한 관심은 오랫동안 지속되었습니다. 영성에 관심을 가지면서 영성에 관한 책들을 깊이 읽게 되었습니다. 훌륭한 영성가들을 만나는 은혜를 누렸습니다. 영성에 대한 지속적인 관심은 《뿌리 깊은 영성》이란 책을 쓰게 만들었습니다.

관심은 열림입니다. 관심을 갖게 되면 눈이 열립니다. 관심을 갖게 되면 깨달음이 열립니다. 관심을 갖게 되면 이전에 보지 못했던 것을 보게 됩니다. 이전에 깨닫지 못했던 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 관심을 갖게 되면 새로운 길이 열립니다. 하나님의 은혜로 예수님께 관심을 갖고 예수님을 믿으면 구원의 문이 열립니다. 관심은 놀라운 결과를 만들어냅니다. 우리가 한 분야를 집중해서 깊이 연구하게 되면 그 분야가 열리게 됩니다. 그 분야를 통달하게 됩니다. 한 분야를 깊이 통달하게 되면 다른 분야도 통달할 수 있는 길이 열립니다. 이나모리 가즈오는 “넓고 얕게 아는 것은 아예 모르는 것과 같다. 그러나 한 가지 일을 오래 깊이 몰두해 통달하면 결국 모든 것으로 통하기 마련이다.”라고 말합니다. 한 주제를 깊이 통달하는 경험은 다른 주제도 관심만 가지면 깊이 통달할 수 있다는 확신을 갖게 만듭니다.

좋은 관심은 좋은 만남처럼 하나님의 은총의 사건입니다. 하나님의 선물입니다. 좋은 관심은 좋은 결과를 낳습니다. 그래서 우리 가족과 우리 자녀들이 좋은 것에 관심을 갖도록 기도해야 합니다. 좋은 것에 집중된 관심을 가짐으로 아름다운 미래를 만들어 가시길 기도드립니다.

Focused Attention Shapes Our Life

A few days ago, I looked at the flowers on a cactus with interest. I grow several types of cacti at home, but this was the first cactus flower I've ever seen in my life. It was amazing and mysterious. My eyes stayed on it for a while. And I continued to look upon it again and again. That night, before I went to sleep, I suddenly remembered the cactus flower I had been paying close attention to in the evening. A mysterious cactus flower that I would never have thought of if I hadn't paid attention was on my mind before I fell asleep. It was the power of interest. It is our interests that shape our lives. Attention is being drawn to and paying attention to something. The word interest (關心) contains the Chinese letter heart “heart(心)” in the word. Interest is deeply connected with our hearts.

Not all interests shape our lives. Some interests just passes us by. And some interests are wrong interests that ruin our lives. Such interest is what we call temptation. Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden because they were interested in the tree of knowledge and not in the tree of life. If Adam and Eve had been interested in the tree of life, the history of mankind would have been different. That is why you need to know whom to pay attention to, what to pay attention to, and where to pay attention. Of the 12 spies in the Bible, 10 spies hated the land of Canaan. They were more interested in Egypt, which they had left. They made all the people of Israel turn to Egypt. However, Joshua and Caleb were interested in the land of Canaan, which God had promised. They focused on the land of Canaan. After all, among the first generation of Exodus, only Joshua and Caleb entered the land of Canaan. In a way, interest is a choice. And choices have consequences. I would like to share with you some insights regarding interests that I have come to realize as I meditated on it.

Interest is love. To be interested is to begin to love. The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Hatred is something that remains of interest. In a way, it's a corrupted interest. It is a perverse interest. But indifference is not paying any attention at all. That is why, for those who should love, indifference is more terrifying than hate. The reason for the importance of care and love is because humans are changed by what they love. It is because it makes you resemble what you love. It is because what we love determines the color of our hearts and dyes our souls.

The interest is focused. When you focus, amazing things happen. As a child, I used a magnifying glass to focus sunlight on paper. The paper catches fire when the sunlight is focused with a magnifying glass. Attention is to focus as if you were gathering sunlight with a magnifying glass. Focusing means focused interest. It means constant attention. It is not a passing interest that shapes our lives. Paying attention once or twice won't change our lives. Focused attention, constant attention, and persistent attention shape our lives. When we become interested and focused on a subject, we study it deeply. Some people focus on one topic and do in-depth research while becoming a Ph.D. in that field. And then becoming a professor.

As I walked the path of pastoring, I became interested in spirituality. The interest in spirituality, which started with a meditation on the Word, continued for a long time. As I became interested in spirituality, I began to deeply read books on spirituality. I had the privilege of meeting great mystics. My continued interest in spirituality led me to the writing of the book, “Deep-Rooted in Christ: The Way of Transformation.”

Interest is an opening. When you pay attention, your eyes will be opened. When you pay attention, there will be enlightenment. When you show interest, you will see things you've never seen before. You become aware of things you did not realize before. Interest opens up new paths. If you are interested in Jesus, with the grace of God and believe in Him, the door of salvation will open. Attention produces amazing results. When we focus on a field and study it deeply, that field opens up. You will master the field. Deep mastery in one field opens the way to mastery in another. Kazuo Inamori said, “Knowing broadly and shallowly is like not knowing at all. But if you master one thing for a long time and deeply immerse yourself in it, it will eventually lead to everything.” The experience of mastering one subject deeply gives you the confidence to master another subject as long as you have an interest.

A good interest is an event of God's grace, like a good encounter. It is a gift from God. Good attention leads to good results. So, let us pray for our families and our children to take interest in good things. I pray that you will create a beautiful future by focusing your attention on good things.
