[목회서신] 초심은 첫사랑입니다! | Initial Mind is First Love!

저는 창립기념주일이 되면 거듭 초심(初心)을 생각합니다. 초심을 지속적으로 가꾸는 것은 어려운 일입니다. 초심은 처음 먹은 마음입니다. 그래서 초심은 순수합니다. 초심은 겸손합니다. 그런데 세월이 흐르게 되면 순수한 마음이 변질됩니다. 겸손했던 마음이 교만하게 됩니다. 초심을 잃어버리면 본질을 상실하게 됩니다. 초심을 잃어버리면 긴장감이 사라집니다. 초심을 잃어버리면 방심하게 됩니다. 초심을 잃어버리면 열정이 식게 됩니다. 초심을 잃어버리면 안주하게 됩니다. 초심을 잃어버리면 나태해집니다. 초심을 잃어버리면 더 이상 배우려고 하지 않습니다. 그런 까닭에 초심을 잃어버리는 것은 아주 위험한 것입니다. 우리는 거듭 초심을 가꾸어야 합니다.

결혼한 부부가 결혼기념일을 기억하고 지키는 것은 초심을 회복하기 위해서입니다. 기념한다는 것은 첫사랑을 기억한다는 것입니다. 기념한다는 것은 결혼 언약을 새롭게 한다는 것을 의미합니다. 초심은 첫사랑입니다. 첫사랑은 순수합니다. 첫사랑은 설렘이 있습니다. 열정이 있습니다. 첫사랑은 서로를 어려워합니다. 함부로 대하지 않습니다. 조심스럽게 대합니다. 첫사랑은 서로를 더 알고 싶어 합니다. 서로를 존중합니다. 그런데 세월이 흘러 서로가 익숙해지면 함부로 대합니다. 예의를 지키지 않습니다. 경계선을 넘는 언어를 사용하게 됩니다. 그때 결혼 생활은 위기를 맞이하게 됩니다. 결혼한 부부는 결혼기념일을 지키면서 거듭 초심을 가꾸어야 합니다. 초심을 가꾼다는 것은 두 사람이 만나 나누었던 그 순수한 첫사랑을 회복하는 것입니다.

교회가 창립기념감사예배를 드리는 이유는 초심을 회복하기 위해서입니다. 예수님을 향한 첫사랑을 회복하기 위해서입니다. 요한계시록에서 예수님은 에베소교회가 처음 사랑을 버렸다고 책망하십니다. “그러나 너를 책망할 것이 있나니 너의 처음 사랑을 버렸느니라”(계 2:4). 예수님은 어디서 처음 사랑이 떨어졌는지 생각하고 회개하여 처음 행위를 가지라고 말씀합니다(계 2:5). 에베소 교회는 예수님의 사랑을 풍성하게 경험한 교회였습니다. 예수님을 깊이 사랑한 교회였습니다. 그런데 세월이 흐르면서 예수님을 향한 사랑이 식었던 것입니다.

초심은 “다움”입니다. “인간다움”이란 사람으로서 갖추어야 할 것으로 기대되는 자질이나 덕목입니다. 성도가 추구하는 초심은 “교회다움”을 추구하는 것입니다. “교회다움”이란 교회 본질에 충실한 것입니다. 교회다움이란 구체적으로 무엇을 의미할까요?

“교회다움”이란 예수님이 주인인 교회를 의미합니다. 교회는 예수님의 교회입니다. “내가 이 반석 위에 내 교회를 세우리니 음부의 권세가 이기지 못하리라”(마 16:18하). 교회는 예수님의 몸입니다. 교회의 머리는 예수님이십니다. 교회는 예수님에 의해, 예수님을 위해 존재합니다. 예수님의 복음을 전하고, 예수님의 영광을 드러내기 위해 존재합니다. 예수님의 교회는 만물 위에서 만물을 충만케 하기 위해 존재합니다. “교회는 그의 몸이니 만물 안에서 만물을 충만하게 하시는 이의 충만함이니라”(엡 1:23).

“교회다움”이란 영혼을 구원하는 데 있습니다. 한 영혼을 천하보다 소중히 여기는 데 있습니다. 교회가 영혼을 구원하는 일에 힘쓰지 않는다면 존재 목적을 상실한 것입니다. 교회가 선교에 힘쓰지 않는다면 존재 목적을 상실한 것입니다. 교회가 존재하는 가장 중요한 이유는 영혼을 구원하고 열방을 복음화하기 위해서입니다. 교회의 존재 이유는 예수님의 비전을 성취하는 것입니다. 예수님이 주신 비전은 모든 민족을 제자로 삼는 것입니다(마 28:19-20).

“교회다움”이란 하나님을 예배하는 데 있습니다. 성경의 이야기는 예배의 이야기입니다. 우리가 구원받은 이유는 하나님을 예배하기 위해서입니다. 하나님은 영과 진리로 예배하는 자를 찾으십니다(요 4:23). 선교의 마지막 목표도 예배에 있습니다. 하나님은 각 나라와 족속과 백성과 방언으로 예배하길 원하십니다(계 7:9-10).

“교회다움”이란 기도하는 데 있습니다. 예수님은 “내 집은 만민이 기도하는 집”이라고 말씀하십니다(막 11:17; 사 56:7). 교회는 만민이 기도하는 집입니다. 만민을 위해 기도하는 집입니다. 교회는 기도를 생명처럼 여겨야 합니다. 기도의 불이 늘 불타야 합니다. 교회에 기도의 불이 꺼지면 교회는 힘을 잃게 됩니다. 하나님은 기도하는 교회와 성도를 통해 세계를 움직이십니다.

“교회다움”은 섬김에 있습니다. 교회의 머리되신 예수님은 섬기기 위해 오셨습니다. “인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라”(막 10:45). 세상은 교회가 섬길 때 감동을 받습니다. 교회가 착한 일을 할 때 감동을 받습니다. 세상은 교회가 “교회다움”에 충실할 때 감동을 받습니다. 우리 함께 거듭 초심을 가꾸도록 합시다. 주님을 향한 처음 사랑, 주님의 교회를 향한 처음 사랑, 그리고 영혼 구원과 세계 선교를 위한 열정을 회복하도록 합시다.

Initial Mind is First Love!

When it comes to the anniversary Sunday, I think of the initial mind again. It isn't easy to cultivate the initial mind continuously. The initial mind is the first intention. So, the initial mind is pure. The initial mind is humble. However, as time goes by, the pure heart changes. A humble heart becomes proud. If you lose your initial mind, you lose your essence. When you lose your initial mind, the tension disappears. If you lose your initial mind, you become careless. If you lose your initial mind, your enthusiasm will cool down. If you lose your initial mind, you will become complacent. If you lose your initial mind, you become lazy. If you lose your initial mind, you won't learn anymore. Therefore, it is very dangerous to lose your initial mind. Therefore, we need to cultivate our initial minds again and again.

Married couples remember and keep their wedding anniversary in order to restore their initial minds. Celebrating means remembering your first love. Celebrating means renewing the marriage covenant. The initial mind is first love. The first love is pure. The first love is romance. There is a passion in the first love. The first love makes each other difficult. We are not rude to each other. We are careful with each other. First, love wants to know each other better. They respect each other. However, as the years pass and the couple gets used to it, they treat them rudely. They are not being polite. They use a language that crosses borders. At that time, the marriage is in crisis. Married couples should keep their wedding anniversary and cultivate their initial mind repeatedly. To nurture the initial mind is to restore the pure first love that the two of them shared.

The reason why our church is holding the Anniversary Thanksgiving Service is to restore the initial mind. It is to restore the first love for Jesus. In the book of Revelation, Jesus rebukes the church in Ephesus for forsaking its first love. "Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love" (Revelation 2:4). Jesus tells them to think about where they lost their first love, repent and do the things they did at first (Revelation 2:5). The church in Ephesus was a church that experienced the love of Jesus abundantly. It was a church that deeply loved Jesus. However, as the years passed, their love for Jesus grew cold.

The initial mind is "likeness." "Human-likeness" is a quality or virtue expected to be possessed as a human being. The initial mind pursued by the saints is to pursue "church-likeness". "Church-likeness" means being faithful to the essence of the church. What does church-likeness mean specifically?

"Church-likeness" means the church where Jesus is the Lord. The Church is the church of Jesus. "On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." (Matthew 16:18b) The church is the body of Jesus. The head of the church is Jesus. The church exists by and for Jesus. It exists to spread the gospel of Jesus and reveal the glory of Jesus. The church of Jesus exists to fill all things above all things. "[Church] is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way." (Ephesians 1:23).

"Church-likeness" lies in saving souls. It consists in valuing one soul more than the world. If the church does not work hard to save souls, it has lost its purpose of existence. If the church does not put effort into missionary work, it has lost its purpose of existence. The most important reason the church exists is to save souls and evangelize the nations. The reason the church exists is to fulfill the vision of Jesus. The vision Jesus gave is to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20).

"Church-likeness" lies in worshiping God. The story of the Bible is the story of worship. The reason we are saved is to worship God. God is looking for those who worship in spirit and truth (John 4:23). The final goal of missions is also worship. God wants us to worship in every nation, tribe, people, and language (Rev 7:9-10).

"Church-likeness" lies in prayer. Jesus said, "My house is the house of prayer for all nations" (Mark 11:17; Isaiah 56:7). The church is the house where all nations pray. It is a house that prays for all people. The church should regard prayer as life. The fire of prayer must always burn. When the fire of prayer in the church goes out, the church loses its power. God moves the world through praying churches and believers.

"Church-likeness" lies in service. Jesus, the head of the church, came to serve. "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45). The world is touched when the church serves. The world is moved when the church does good deeds. The world is touched when the church is faithful to "church-likeness." So let's nurture our initial mind again and again together. Let us restore our first love for the Lord, our first love for His church, and our passion for soul salvation and world mission.
