[목회서신] 충성은 아름다운 성품입니다! | Loyalty is a Beautiful Characteristic!

제가 예수님을 믿고 읽은 성경 말씀 가운데 제 영혼에 새겨진 말씀이 있습니다. 그 말씀은 예수님이 서머나 교회에 주신 말씀입니다. “네가 죽도록 충성하라 그리하면 내가 생명의 면류관을 네게 주리라”(계 2:10, 개역한글). 이유는 알 수 없지만 이 말씀이 제 영혼에 새겨졌습니다. 예수님은 죽도록 충성하면 생명의 면류관을 상으로 주시겠다고 약속하십니다. 저는 이 말씀을 제 영혼에 새기면서 충성된 목회자가 되고 싶었습니다. 충성된 일꾼이 되고 싶었습니다. “충성”이란 말은 언제부터인가 잊혀진 말이 된 것 같습니다. 목회자의 일은 잊혀진 단어를 다시 회복시키는 것입니다.

충성이란 아주 소중한 말입니다. “충성(忠誠)”이란 한문은 “충성” 충(忠)에 “정성” 성(誠)이란 두 단어의 합성어입니다. 충(忠)이란 단어는 “마음” 심(心)과 “가운데” 중(中)의 합성어입니다. 성(誠)이란 단어는 “말씀” 언(言)과 “이룰” 성(成)의 합성어입니다. “충성이란 말씀을 마음에 품고 그 말씀을 이루는 것입니다.” 충성(忠誠)은 마음에서 시작됩니다. 그래서 충성이 소중한 것입니다. 하나님은 충성된 일꾼을 찾으십니다. 충성된 일꾼을 신뢰하십니다. 충성된 일꾼에게 점점 더 소중한 일을 맡기십니다. 우리는 성경을 통해 충성된 일꾼의 지혜를 배우게 됩니다.

첫째, 작은 일에 충성하는 것이 지혜입니다. 예수님은 작은 일에 충성하는 것의 소중함을 거듭 가르치셨습니다. “그 주인이 이르되 잘하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아 네가 적은 일에 충성하였으매 내가 많은 것을 네게 맡기리니 네 주인의 즐거움에 참여할지어다”(마 25:21). “지극히 작은 것에 충성된 자는 큰 것에도 충성되고 지극히 작은 것에 불의한 자는 큰 것에도 불의하니라”(눅 16:10). 다윗은 충성된 사람이었습니다. 그의 충성은 그가 아버지의 양을 칠 때 작은 양 새끼 한 마리를 위해 헌신한 것에서 시작되었습니다. 그는 작은 일에 충성된 사람이었습니다.

둘째, 맡겨진 일에 충성하는 것이 지혜입니다. 맡겨진 일이 작아 보이고 하찮아 보여도 맡겨진 일에 충성하는 것이 지혜입니다. 요셉은 아버지의 심부름을 하는 중에 애굽에 팔려 갔습니다. 다윗도 아버지의 심부름을 하는 중에 골리앗 장군과 싸워 승리하게 됩니다. 하나님은 처음부터 거대한 일을 맡기지 않습니다. 하나님은 처음에는 작은 일, 하찮게 보이는 일을 맡기심으로 우리의 충성을 시험하십니다. 하나님이 우리에게 어떤 일을 맡기실 때 순종하는 것이 지혜입니다. 우리 삶의 진보는 내가 원치 않은 일이 맡겨졌음에도 불구하고, 그 일에 기쁨으로 헌신할 때 경험할 수 있습니다. 바울도 맡겨진 일에 충성할 것을 권면합니다. “그리고 맡은 자들에게 구할 것은 충성이니라”(고전 4:2).

셋째, 머무는 곳에서 충성하는 것이 지혜입니다. 우리는 현재 머무는 곳을 폄하하는 경향이 있습니다. 자꾸 다른 곳을 두리번거리는 경향이 있습니다. 하나님의 역사는 우리가 머무는 곳에서 시작됩니다. 요셉의 지혜는 그가 머무는 곳에서 최선을 다한 것입니다. 보디발의 집에 머물 때 요셉은 그의 주인 보디발에게 충성했습니다. 그가 감옥에 머물 때 간수장에게 충성했습니다. 마더 테레사는 “머무는 곳에서 꽃피우라”고 말했습니다. 저는 “머무는 곳에서 풍성한 열매를 맺으십시오.”라고 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 머무는 곳에서 충성할 때 그다음 차원으로 들어가게 됩니다.

넷째, 지혜롭게 충성하는 것이 지혜입니다. 충성이란 이미지 속에는 우직함이 담겨 있습니다. 성실함이 담겨 있습니다. 한결같음이 담겨 있습니다. 배신하지 않는다는 이미지가 담겨 있습니다. 아주 좋은 이미지입니다. 충성된 사람을 싫어할 사람은 없습니다. 충성이란 다른 말로 신실하다는 뜻입니다. 신실한 남편과 아내를 싫어할 사람은 없습니다. 신실한 리더와 목회자를 싫어할 사람은 없습니다. 그러나 충성스럽지만 열매를 맺지 못한다면 문제가 있습니다. 충성스러우면서 풍성한 열매를 맺기 위해서는 지혜가 필요합니다. 예수님은 충성되고 지혜로운 종이 되라고 말씀합니다. “충성되고 지혜 있는 종이 되어 주인에게 그 집 사람들을 맡아 때를 따라 양식을 나눠 줄 자가 누구냐 주인이 올 때에 그 종이 이렇게 하는 것을 보면 그 종이 복이 있으리로다”(마 24:45-46).

다섯째, 하나님께 끝까지 충성하는 것이 지혜입니다. 급변하는 시대 속에서 한 사람이나 한 조직이나 한 교회에 끝까지 충성하기 어렵습니다. 그래서 한 사람에게 끝까지 충성하라는 말은 현실적이지 않습니다. 한 교회에 끝까지 충성하라는 말도 현실적이지 않습니다. 물론 우리가 존경하는 분, 우리가 사랑하는 교회에 끝까지 충성하는 것은 아름다운 일입니다. 하지만 지금처럼 변화하는 세상에서 그것을 기대하는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 그래서 우리는 하나님께 끝까지 충성하는 것을 선택해야 합니다. 하나님께 죽기까지 충성하는 것을 선택해야 합니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 죽기까지 하나님 아버지께 충성하셨습니다. 충성은 아름다운 성품입니다. 충성에는 칭찬이 따라옵니다. 충성된 일꾼이 되어 하나님께 칭찬과 면류관을 받으시길 빕니다.

Loyalty is a Beautiful Characteristic!

Among the Bible verses I have read since accepting Christ, there is a Word that has been engraved in my soul. Those are the words that Jesus gave to the Church of Smyrna. "Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Revelation 2:10b, ESV). I don't know why but these words were engraved in my soul. Jesus promises to reward us with the crown of life if we are faithful to death. I want to engrave this Word into my heart and become a loyal (faithful) pastor. I wanted to be a loyal worker. But unfortunately, the word "loyal" (faithful) has become a forgotten word for some time. A pastor's job is to restore forgotten words.

Loyalty is a very precious word. The Chinese character for "loyalty" (忠誠) is a compound word of the two words "loyal" (忠) and "sincerity" (誠). The word "loyal" (忠) is a compound word from "heart" (心) and "middle" (中). The word "sincerity" (誠) is a compound word from "word" (言) and "to achieve" (成). "Loyalty is having the word in your heart and fulfilling it." Loyalty begins in the heart. So, loyalty is precious. God is looking for loyal workers. He trusts loyal workers. He entrusts more and more precious tasks to loyal workers. We learn the wisdom of loyal workers through the Bible.

First, being loyal (faithful) to small things is wisdom. Jesus repeatedly taught the value of being loyal to the little things. "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" (Matthew 25:21). "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much" (Luke 16:10). David was a loyal man. His loyalty began with his dedication to one little lamb when he tended his father's sheep. He was loyal to little things.

Second, being loyal to the task entrusted is wisdom. Wisdom is being loyal to the task entrusted, even if it seems small and insignificant. Joseph was sold to Egypt while he was running his father's errand. David was also victorious when he fought General Goliath while doing his father's chores. God does not entrust us with a massive task from the beginning. God tests our loyalty by giving us small, seemingly insignificant tasks at first. Wisdom is obedience when God entrusts us with a task. Progress in our lives can be experienced when we joyfully commit to a task we do not want. Paul also exhorts us to be faithful in the work entrusted to us. "Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful." (1 Corinthians 4:2).

Third, being loyal where you are is wisdom. We tend to downplay our current situation. We tend to keep looking elsewhere. God's work begins where we are. Joseph's wisdom was to do his best in his current situation. While at Potiphar's house, Joseph was loyal to his master Potiphar. He was loyal to the prison guard while he was in prison. Mother Teresa said, "bloom where you are planted." I want to say, "Wherever you planted, bear abundant fruit." When you are loyal to where you are, you enter the next dimension.

Fourth, being loyal wisely is wisdom. The image of loyalty contains honesty. There is sincerity. Consistency is included. It includes the image of not betraying. It is a very good image. No one dislikes a loyal person. Loyalty, in other words, means to be faithful. No one dislikes a faithful husband and wife. No one hates faithful leaders and pastors. But if you are loyal but not fruitful, then you have a problem. It takes wisdom to be loyal and to bear abundant fruit. Jesus tells us to be faithful and wise servants. "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns" (Matthew 24:45-46).

Fifth, being loyal to God to the end is wisdom. It is difficult to remain loyal to one person, one organization, or one church until the end of a rapidly changing era. So, it is not realistic to say that you should be loyal to one person to the end. Likewise, it is not realistic to say that we should be loyal to one church to the end. Of course, it is a beautiful thing to be loyal to the one we admire and the church we love to the end. However, it is not easy to expect that in today's changing world. So, we must choose to be loyal to God to the end. You must choose to be loyal to God until death. Jesus was loyal to God the Father until He died on the cross. Loyalty is a beautiful character. Loyalty comes with praise. May you be a loyal worker and receive God's praise and crown.
