[목회서신] 큰 새는 바람을 거슬러 난다. | Great Birds Fly Against the Wind

     저는 성경에 나오는 두 종류의 새를 참 좋아합니다. 하나는 비둘기이고, 또 하나는 독수리입니다. 비둘기는 평화와 순결과 성령님의 상징입니다. 예수님께서 세례를 받으시고 물에서 올라오실 때 성령님이 비둘기처럼 임하셨습니다. “예수께서 세례를 받으시고 곧 물에서 올라오실새 하늘이 열리고 하나님의 성령이 비둘기 같이 내려 자기 위에 임하심을 보시더니”(마 3:16). 비둘기는 부드러움의 영성을 보여 줍니다. 온유함의 아름다움과 사랑의 깊이를 가르쳐 줍니다. 하지만 하나님은 비둘기만 사용하지 않으셨습니다.

하나님은 독수리의 이미지도 사용하셨습니다. 그 이유는 독수리는 높은 곳을 바라보는 새이기 때문입니다. 독수리는 폭풍을 두려워하기보다, 오히려 폭풍을 타고 더 높이 오르는 새이기 때문입니다. 출애굽기에서 하나님은 자신을 독수리의 이미지로 설명하십니다. “내가 애굽 사람에게 어떻게 행하였음과 내가 어떻게 독수리 날개로 너희를 업어 내게로 인도하였음을 너희가 보았느니라”(출 19:4). 또한 하나님은 자기 백성을 독수리가 자기 새끼를 훈련하는 것처럼 훈련하신다고 말씀합니다. “마치 독수리가 자기의 보금자리를 어지럽게 하며 자기의 새끼 위에 너풀거리며 그의 날개를 펴서 새끼를 받으며 그의 날개 위에 그것을 업는 것 같이”(신 32:11).

독수리는 새끼를 강하게 키웁니다. 둥지를 흔듭니다. 편안함에만 머물지 않게 합니다. 그리고 새끼가 떨어질 때 날개로 받아 올립니다. 하나님도 때때로 우리의 둥지를 흔드십니다. 편안함에 머물지 말고 더 높은 믿음으로 올라오라고 부르십니다. “오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개치며 올라감 같을 것이요”(사 40:31상). 하나님은 왜 우리가 독수리처럼 살기를 원하실까요?

첫째, 독수리는 높은 곳에서 멀리 바라보기 때문입니다. 인생에서 시야가 중요합니다. 좁은 시야로는 멀리 볼 수 없습니다. 넓은 시야를 가질 때 인생 전체의 안목과 영원의 안목으로 삶을 바라볼 수 있습니다. 독수리는 높은 곳을 향해 올라갑니다. 독수리는 놀라운 시력을 가지고 있습니다. 시야가 넓습니다. 눈앞의 현실만 보지 않고 먼 곳을 바라봅니다.

둘째, 독수리는 고독을 친구로 삼을 줄 알기 때문입니다. 독수리는 작은 새처럼 떼를 지어 날지 않습니다. 높은 기류를 타기 위해 홀로 침묵 속에 비상합니다. 깊은 영성은 홀로 하나님 앞에 머무는 시간 속에서 자랍니다. A. W. 토저는 “큰 독수리는 홀로 날고, 큰 사자는 홀로 사냥하며, 위대한 영혼은 홀로 걷는다. 하나님과 함께 홀로 걷는다.”라고 말했습니다. 또한 그는 “성도는 거룩함의 대가로 외로움이란 값을 지불해야 한다.”라고 말했습니다. 저는 글을 쓸 때 홀로 씁니다. 말씀을 묵상하고, 설교를 준비할 때 성령님을 의지하며 고독한 시간을 갖습니다.

제가 독수리를 좋아한다고 해서 공동체를 결코 무시하는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 공동체를 소중히 여기십니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리가 때로 하나님 앞에 홀로 머물기를 원하십니다. 우리가 하나님 앞에 홀로 머물 때 우리는 하나님과 친밀한 교제를 나눌 수 있습니다. 깊은 영성을 추구하는 성도는 공동체 안에 살지만 하나님 앞에서 홀로 서는 법을 배워야 합니다.

셋째, 독수리는 역풍을 타고 높이 오릅니다. 독수리는 폭풍이 오면 숨지 않습니다. 오히려 바람을 향해 날개를 펼칩니다. 강한 바람 속에서 상승기류를 발견하기 때문입니다. 작은 새들은 바람을 피해 숨습니다. 그러나 큰 새는 바람을 거슬러 오릅니다. 거센 바람은 독수리를 떨어뜨리는 힘이 아니라 더 높이 올리는 힘이 됩니다. 고난이 반드시 우리를 무너뜨리는 것은 아닙니다. 하나님의 손 안에서는 고난조차 우리를 더 높이 올리는 바람이 될 수 있습니다. 윈스턴 처칠은 “연은 바람을 등지고 날지 않는다. 바람을 거슬러 올라간다.”라고 말했습니다.

독수리는 바람이 불 때 날개를 접지 않습니다. 오히려 더 크게 펼칩니다. 우리가 펼쳐야 할 날개가 있습니다. 기도와 말씀의 날개입니다. 찬양과 경배의 날개입니다. 살다 보면 예고도 없이 거센 바람이 찾아옵니다. 상실의 바람, 실패의 바람, 실직의 바람, 갈등의 바람, 질병의 바람, 오해의 바람, 외로움의 바람, 그리고 절망의 바람이 불어옵니다. 그때 우리는 바람 앞에서 숨고 싶습니다. 상처받지 않기 위해 마음을 닫고, 실망하지 않기 위해 기대를 포기하려고 합니다. 하지만 우리는 독수리처럼 바람을 피하지 말고 역풍을 타고 비상해야 합니다.

인생은 역설입니다. 상처를 피할 때보다 상처를 통과할 때 더욱 깊어집니다. 씨앗은 깨질 때 싹이 틉니다. 향기는 꽃이 뭉개질 때 퍼집니다. 십자가를 통과한 생명이 부활에 이르듯, 영혼도 고난을 통과할 때 깊어집니다. 지금 거센 역풍 앞에 서 계십니까? 낙심하지 마십시오. 하나님은 역풍조차 은혜의 상승기류로 사용하십니다. 작은 새는 바람을 피해 숨지만, 독수리는 바람을 타고 더 높이 오릅니다. 하나님께서 성도님 모두에게 독수리의 날개를 주셔서 역풍 속에서도 믿음으로 비상하게 하시길 축복합니다.

Great Birds Fly Against the Wind

   There are two kinds of birds in the Bible that I deeply love. One is the dove, and the other is the eagle. The dove symbolizes peace, purity, and the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was baptized and came up out of the water, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him like a dove. “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him” (Matthew 3:16). The dove reveals the spirituality of gentleness. It teaches us the beauty of meekness and the depth of love. Yet God did not use only the image of the dove.

God also used the image of the eagle because the eagle is a bird that looks toward the heights. Rather than fearing storms, the eagle rides the storm and rises even higher. In Exodus, God describes Himself with the image of an eagle: “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself” (Exodus 19:4). God also says that He disciplines His people the way an eagle trains its young: “Like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions” (Deuteronomy 32:11).

Eagles raise their young to become strong. They stir the nest. They do not allow their eaglets to remain only in comfort. And when the young fall, the eagle catches them with its wings. In the same way, God sometimes shakes our nests. He calls us not to remain in comfort but to rise to a higher faith. “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31a). Why does God desire us to live like eagles?

First, eagles see far from high places. In life, vision is essential. With a narrow view, we cannot see far. When we gain a broader vision, we can see life through the perspective of eternity. Eagles rise toward the heights. They possess extraordinary eyesight. Their vision is wide. They do not focus only on the immediate reality before them but look far ahead.

Second, eagles know how to make solitude their friend. Eagles do not fly in flocks like small birds. To ride the high currents, they soar alone in silence. Deep spirituality grows in moments of being alone before God. A. W. Tozer once said, “The great eagle flies alone; the great lion hunts alone; the great soul walks alone—with God.” He also said, “The man who would be holy must pay the price of loneliness.” When I write, I write alone. When I meditate on God’s Word and prepare sermons, I depend on the Holy Spirit and spend quiet, solitary hours with God.

My love for eagles does not mean I disregard community. God treasures community. Yet God also desires that we sometimes remain alone before Him. When we stand alone before God, we experience intimate fellowship with Him. Believers who pursue deep spirituality live within community, but they must also learn how to stand alone before God.

Third, eagles rise higher by riding against the wind. When storms come, eagles do not hide. Instead, they spread their wings toward the wind because they discover rising currents within the strong winds. Small birds hide from the wind, but great birds rise against it. Fierce winds are not forces that bring eagles down; they become forces that lift them higher. Hardships do not necessarily destroy us. In God’s hands, even suffering can become the wind that lifts us higher. Winston Churchill once said, “Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it.”

When the wind blows, eagles do not fold their wings. They spread them even wider. We also have wings we must spread—the wings of prayer and the Word, the wings of praise and worship. As we live, fierce winds often come without warning: the winds of loss, failure, unemployment, conflict, illness, misunderstanding, loneliness, and despair. In those moments, we want to hide from the wind. To avoid being hurt, we close our hearts. To avoid disappointment, we give up hope. But like eagles, we must not avoid the wind. We must soar against it.

Life is full of paradoxes. We grow deeper not by avoiding wounds but by passing through them. Seeds sprout when they break open. Fragrance spreads when flowers are crushed. Just as life passed through the cross before reaching resurrection, our souls also deepen through suffering. Are you standing before fierce headwinds today? Do not be discouraged. God uses even the contrary winds as currents of grace that lift us upward. Small birds hide from the wind, but eagles ride the wind and soar higher. May God give each of you the wings of an eagle so that even in the midst of headwinds, you may rise in faith.
